China’s consumer market is projected to experience another year of modest growth in 2026, remaining largely steady compared to the previous year. Shoppers are placing greater emphasis on getting value for their money, while demographic changes and shifting retail channels continue to influence the fast-moving consumer goods sector.
The country is entering a more mature stage of development characterized by slower growth following a long period of rapid population and income increases, according to the China Shopper Report 2026. Multiple challenges are impacting the market, including an increasing trend of consumers opting for lower-cost alternatives and adopting more cautious spending habits. Additionally, ongoing changes in demographics and household compositions are expected to significantly shape the industry’s growth drivers and future development trajectory over the next decade.
There are roughly 320 million people aged 60 and older in China, and nearly a quarter of households are single-person units. Driven by these demographic shifts, consumers are becoming more focused on getting better value. These trends are also prompting brands to innovate their products, revise packaging strategies, adjust pricing models, and choose sales channels more carefully.
Promotional events such as the annual 618 Shopping Festival have been attracting less attention each year, and this year’s event was notably quieter. A senior executive from a prominent management consultancy explained that the effectiveness of major sales promotions in driving consumer spending is waning. He noted that this decline is actually beneficial, as it points to a more normalized purchasing behavior among consumers.
Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly vital role where consumers face significant information gaps, particularly in areas like pharmaceuticals. It helps users compare product differences and offers purchasing recommendations. This emerging technology is expected to become even more significant in the future, broadening its influence across various product categories.
