Reform UK leader Nigel Farage secured victory in his self-initiated by-election in Clacton on Friday, but his move to silence critics did not go as planned when his main opponent, Count Binface—a comedian dressed as a garbage can—captured over a quarter of the vote.
Farage, a prominent figure in Britain’s Brexit movement, chose not to attend the vote count at the seaside town of Clacton, citing police advice that there was a campaign to disrupt the results. He also canceled a victory speech scheduled for later that day.
“There’s no way I’m going to stand on stage, having just won a strong victory, and be humiliated by nobodies,” Farage told supporters before the results were announced.
The election was held after Farage resigned from Parliament last month to seek a new mandate, claiming the move was part of his fight against an establishment he accused of trying to discredit him over undeclared gifts from donors.
While Farage’s win was clear, the results highlighted the potential political risks of his approach. With an ongoing parliamentary investigation into his finances, the vote might not have resolved the issues he aimed to sideline.
The momentum for Reform UK appears to be waning. After the main political parties withdrew from the race, calling it a divisive stunt, Count Binface—an amusing creation of comedian Jonathan Harvey—became Farage’s main challenger.
Farage received 62.8% of the vote, whereas Count Binface, who campaigned on quirky policies like capping ice cream prices and drafting people using speakerphones on public transit, garnered 26.7%. Voter turnout was 44%.
Despite leading in national polls for some time, Reform UK’s popularity has declined, partially due to the controversy surrounding Farage’s finances. He is under parliamentary investigation over whether he should have declared a £5 million ($6.75 million) gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire.
Laura Richards-Gray, a political science lecturer at Birkbeck University in London, commented that the absence of major-party opponents weakened Farage’s attempt to frame the race as “people versus the establishment.”
“This strategy backfired, especially nationally, because Farage lost control of the narrative,” she explained.
A rising support for the Labour Party has also challenged Farage. Since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister last month, Labour’s approval ratings have increased, currently leading Reform UK 28% to 25%. Burnham has dominated media appearances and social media, consolidating a left-leaning bloc around Labour ahead of the next general election, expected in three years.
Meanwhile, Reform UK faces competition on the right, struggling to unify the vote among Conservatives and the anti-immigration party Restore Britain, which is gaining ground.
Though Farage was favored to win, his vote share was lower than a Survation poll from last month predicted—which had him at 73% and Count Binface at 20%. The parliamentary watchdog remains focused on investigating his financial disclosures, particularly whether he should have declared a gift from a Thailand-based billionaire before the next national election.
Farage admitted receiving the money but argued he did nothing wrong, claiming it was a personal gift. If authorities determine he violated declaration rules, he could face suspension from Parliament and possibly another vote to confirm his seat, with major parties likely to field candidates again.
