AMD’s New RX 8800 Might Exceed Expectations

The Standard format for Magic: The Gathering hasn’t been in the best shape since the pandemic, leading many players to prefer other formats like Commander, Modern, or Pioneer. Wizard’s recent initiatives have focused on revitalizing Standard, with Foundations as the centerpiece of these efforts.

Being a major set, Aetherdrift will launch with the full complement of Play and Collector boosters, bundles, and Commander decks in February.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm – April 11, 2025

After years of requests from players, Tarkir returns with Dragonstorm. This set aims to blend the elements fans loved from its predecessor sets. While the three-color clans once erased from the lore return in Dragonstorm, the fierce Dragons that made Dragons of Tarkir special are also part of the lineup.

Although no specific cards have been revealed yet, it has been confirmed that Ugin and Sarkhan Vol are making appearances. The reasoning behind Ugin’s absence from overseeing Nicol Bolas remains unclear, but Sarkhan seems to be enjoying himself.

Details about preconstructed decks are still unknown, but the five clans would be a perfect addition for this year’s major Commander release.

Final Fantasy – June 13, 2025

With Final Fantasy, Magic is taking a bold step forward. This will be the second complete Universes Beyond crossover set, following the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. More significantly, Final Fantasy marks the introduction of Universes Beyond cards into Standard, which also makes them legal in both Modern and Pioneer.

This set will feature cards based on all numbered mainline Final Fantasy games, reaching up to Final Fantasy 16. The revealed art includes beloved characters such as Emet, Kefka, Tidus, Yuna, and Sephiroth, alongside series favorites like Moogles.

As with previous releases, there will be Commander decks, bundles, and Play and Collector boosters available. It promises to deliver the most artwork from the Final Fantasy series ever compiled for a single game, making its impact on the Magic community a significant one.

Edge of Eternities – August 1, 2025

Following the sci-fi themes introduced in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Edge of Eternities will take that concept even further into a space-based set replete with dogfighting ships, planets, and cyborgs.

Not much has been disclosed about Edge of Eternities, except that it will introduce Aliens into Standard for the first time and bring back Tezzeret, who was last seen in an ambiguous role during Phyrexia’s multiverse invasion.

With this release, Standard will rotate again, meaning we’ll bid farewell to Dominaria United, The Brothers’ War, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March Of The Machine, and March Of The Machine: The Aftermath.

Note: This will be the final rotating Standard until early 2027, as that cycle will shift to calendar years instead of traditional autumn releases.

Spider-Man – TBA 2025

The second of the three Universes Beyond sets set for 2025 will also mark the initial major crossover with Marvel, which was announced nearly two years ago. With a focus on Spider-Man, his friends, and adversaries, it’s intriguing to see a whole set dedicated to a single part of the Marvel universe.

Like Final Fantasy, the Spider-Man set will be legal in Standard, Modern, and Pioneer. This means it will come complete with the full range of products such as boosters, decks, bundles, and boxes, and it is likely to feature at least a few Secret Lair releases to make the most of this iconic character.

While a specific release date for Spider-Man has yet to be set, estimates suggest it will drop around late September, similar to Duskmourn: House of Horror in 2024.

Unannounced Universes Beyond Set – TBA 2025

The final Standard-legal set set for 2025 is currently shrouded in mystery. Code-named UUB (Unannounced Universes Beyond), this set will be another crossover similar to Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, and Spider-Man, but specific details remain undisclosed.

It has been confirmed that this set will not feature any characters from Marvel and will also be based on a new property not previously featured in Magic. This rules out several franchises like Warhammer, Lord of the Rings, Arcane, Assassin’s Creed, Fallout, Doctor Who, Fortnite, Tomb Raider, Stranger Things, and Street Fighter.

Speculations for what this could be range from Avatar: The Last Airbender to Star Trek, but we’ll have to wait for more information to know for sure.

“Return to Lorwyn” – Q1 2026

The first Standard set of 2026 will mark a journey back to another highly requested plane, the Celtic-inspired Lorwyn. The release of the Unannounced Universes Beyond set during MagicCon: Vegas has delayed the arrival of Lorwyn from late 2025 to early 2026.

Although not well-received initially, Lorwyn’s blend of Celtic motifs, introduction of Kindred themes, and its Fairies, Elves, Kithkin, Goblins, and Merfolk made it a standout. Recent turns in set receptions, like those seen with Kamigawa and Ixalan, suggest that Lorwyn may also enjoy a second chance.

Expect Lorwyn to release with Play and Collector boosters and a series of Commander decks. Given the lengthy timeframe until its launch, there’s always a possibility for changes in the product lineup.

“Return to Arcavios” – Q2 2026

The furthest set on the release calendar is a revisit to Arcavios, the plane introduced in 2021’s Strixhaven: School of Mages. This set will not only continue the exploration of the wider plane but also return to the Strixhaven school and its five colleges.

Strixhaven has made a significant mark on Magic, with many of its characters reappearing in other sets – for example, Quintorius Kand in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Zimone Wola in Duskmourn.

We can anticipate another set that highlights instants and sorceries, likely reintroducing popular mechanics like magecraft. This will probably be the third set to launch in 2026, following an earlier unannounced set and Lorwyn later in the year, and will likely include Play and Collector boosters and Commander decks. However, given the timeline, the landscape of Magic may change significantly by then.
