Octopath Traveler 0: The Complete Money Making and Solving Guide

For a large part of the game, you might find yourself low on leaves in Octopath Traveler 0. Leaves are fairly easy to gather in small amounts, and if this were Octopath Traveler 1 or 2, you’d probably feel like a millionaire just from everyday activities.

However, since this game has over 30 party members to equip and several ways to spend large amounts of leaves quickly—especially if you want Wishvale to look its best—it’s important to keep some strategies in mind to make the most of your earnings.

    ### Sell, Sell, Sell (Within Reason)

It’s common to overlook how much stuff is cluttering your inventory. Early on, I mainly sold only the items that were worth trading for leaves, leaving everything else taking up space. It wasn’t until I cleaned out my items that I realized I had hundreds of thousands of leaves saved up. I kept doing this multiple times and earned roughly the same amount each round. Just be sure to keep some decent armor for each party member, even those you don’t regularly use, because one of the game’s final bosses involves more than just your main eight characters. It’s mostly irrelevant if you choose a different ending route, but it’s frustrating watching under-equipped characters get knocked out instantly, despite being overleveled. Overall, you can safely sell most items, just keep a little armor on hand.

    ### Chase Those Caits and Axe Those Octopuffs

We have guides specifically about finding Caits and Octopuffs, which are rare enemies. The first guide covers how to level up quickly, while the second explains how to increase your chances of encountering these enemies and landing hits before they run away. Both are helpful because each variety can yield a lot of leaves—some Caits, like the Chubby variety, can drop roughly 50,000 leaves per kill. So, hunting these enemies can be a great way to boost your stash.

    ### Haggle for Every Shiny Object

Always buy items if a shop NPC offers them for sale, but only if you can haggle. Buying at regular price won’t be profitable, but haggling ensures you pay less and sell higher, increasing your leaves. Gems, jewelry, or empty coinpurses are all good items to flip. Once you recruit a resident who increases shop profits at Ludo’s shop in Wishvale—something unlocked after completing the “Kindlers of the Flame” arc—you’ll see even larger profits from these sales.

    ### Certain Nifty Abilities

The core of making money is using specific skills that boost leaf gains—either by increasing the amount you get after battles, providing a steady income from Wishvale, or stealing leaves from enemies during fights. Combining these methods can lead to significant wealth. For example, the Collect skill, available on various merchant characters and the protagonist’s merchant class, allows you to take leaves from enemies. Once a certain character returns to Wishvale and maxes out their friendship level at the church (which you unlock later), they can double the leaves you earn post-battle when active.

Some residents will regularly give you leaves once you bring them to Wishvale, and you can increase these amounts by building and upgrading a storage box. The highest-tier version can hold up to 100,000 leaves at once when stocked with town residents focused on money, making it an essential tool for amassing wealth.

  • How to Complete the Salon and Solve in Octopath Traveler 0

How to Complete the Salon and Solve in Octopath Traveler 0

When you start playing Octopath Traveler 0, you get to create your own character who will explore the lands of Osterra and tell your story with friends and party members you meet along the way. This helps you feel connected to the world and lets you customize how your character looks.

Of course, no one wants to keep the same hairstyle or hair color for the entire game. Luckily, the game allows you to change your appearance later on, so you won’t be stuck with your original choices. Here’s how to update your look.

    How to Unlock the Salon

First, you need to unlock the salon to change your appearance. To do this, you must raise your town level to three, which unlocks the salon as a buildable facility.

Follow the “Kindlers of the Flame” questline until it unlocks Rippletide in the Coastlands Region. Follow the quest marker and speak with Illian and Olive across the bridge. Then, go back to Wishvale and build a large house for them.

Once you’ve done that, return to Rippletide and invite both to become residents. Then, go back to Wishvale and assign them to the large house. You also need to invite a total of 15 residents to live in Wishvale if you haven’t already. When these side missions are completed and your town reaches level three, you’ll be able to build a salon in Wishvale.

What You Need to Build the Salon

To construct the salon, gather the following materials:

    • 20 Lumber
    • 20 Stone
    • 20 Cloth

    All Salon Upgrades

The salon isn’t just for changing your appearance. It can be upgraded to give you more options. When first unlocked, you can change your hairstyle and hair color. Upgrades will unlock new features:

    • Rank 2: Allows you to change your character’s motions and voice. It also adds two more resident slots in the salon.
    • Rank 3: Lets you fully customize your character’s look—body shape, face, eye color, and skin tone. You also unlock two new eye colors.

The salon offers a lot of customization options to keep your character looking fresh throughout the game.

  • Battle Strategies for Octopath Traveler 0: Completing and Solving

Battle Strategies for Octopath Traveler 0: Completing and Solving

Getting comfortable with Octopath Traveler 0’s battle system isn’t too difficult, especially if you’re familiar with the other games in the HD-2D series. However, the game has some unique features worth noting, such as the active combat party of eight characters, which can change how battles unfold.

Beginners will find this quick guide especially helpful, but even seasoned players who have already explored Orsterra or enjoyed Partitio’s adventure will find some tips useful.

    Triangle Strategy

Octopath Traveler 0 offers eight character classes—warrior, mage, rogue, and more—each with subtle differences. You’ll easily recognize the main archetypes: fighters (like warriors and hunters), magic users (like mages), and stealthy characters (like rogues). Many characters fall into these broad categories based on their primary roles, whether absorbing damage or dealing physical or elemental attacks.

It’s important to aim for a balanced party that covers all bases—ideally, including a tank, a damage dealer, a scout, and a healer. For example, swords, spears, knives, axes, bows, and staves will be part of your gear, and most elements will be well-covered with the right skills and equipment. Early on, options for light-elemental attacks can feel limited, so be prepared to equip skills that fill those gaps.

A good break makes a great chance to recover

When battling tough enemies, breaking their shield points is crucial. Breaking an enemy’s shield not only deals damage but also stuns or dazes them. Use this moment to your advantage by unleashing your strongest attacks while they’re dazed, and don’t forget to heal your team during these windows. Regular heals ensure your team remains healthy, especially during boss fights where enemies can hit multiple characters with powerful attacks.

Keep in mind that enemies with high attack power often threaten your entire front row. Using shield-breaking techniques disrupts their plans and creates opportunities to heal or perform powerful assaults afterward.

    Maintain vigilance on turn orders

Always watch the turn order bar at the top of the screen, as it dictates when characters act. Skills that delay or cause enemies to act later can be very beneficial. If an enemy’s upcoming action is pushed back by speed-reducing effects, it gives you extra time to react or prepare.

Additionally, some skills can cause enemies to act after their turn, effectively delaying their attacks. Equipping these on key characters can keep dangerous foes—like boss characters or high-speed enemies—at bay longer. Disrupting their actions can buy your team valuable breathing room, especially against tricky opponents who tend to escape or attack en masse.

Keep your best gear in rotation

[Image of Stia casting First Aid]

Gear is limited, and with a large party, it’s essential to manage equipment wisely. Always remember to unequip gear from characters you remove from your active party so someone else can use their equipment. Do not sell gear from characters who aren’t currently in your lineup, as you might need it later, especially in late-game battles where controlling more than eight characters becomes possible. Having proper protection for all party members can make a significant difference.

Stealing can net you double the loot

Many bosses and elite enemies carry valuable items, skills, or gear. If you succeed in stealing from these enemies, you’ll not only get the item but also retain it after battle, along with whatever they would normally drop. Early in the game, stealing techniques are hard to find, but as you progress, you’ll gather more options—so try to keep at least one character skilled in theft.

“Save scumming” can power you up

[Image of nuts in Octopath Traveler]

If you’re willing to reload your game between attempts, you can improve your chances of getting valuable items from NPCs during their Path Actions. Saving before trying a luck-based action gives you another shot without penalty. For higher success rates, wait until your stats favor the attempt to make success more likely. This method can help you acquire rare weapons or items early, but use it judiciously to avoid disrupting your adventure.

    Get Olberic ASAP

Once the quest to recruit Octopath Traveler 1’s warrior Olberic becomes available, pursue it. It typically triggers around the midpoint of the “Bestower of Power” story arc. Olberic’s unique skill, Surpassing Power, allows equipped characters to deal more than 9,999 damage—up to 99,999—that’s essential for defeating bosses with huge health pools, especially in the late game. Securing Olberic early prepares your team for the most challenging fights ahead.

  • Beginner Tips and Tricks for Completing Octopath Traveler 0

Beginner Tips and Tricks for Completing Octopath Traveler 0

In many ways, Octopath Traveler 0 is quite different from its predecessors. While the original Octopath Traveler and its excellent 2023 follow-up told stories centered around eight main characters—with a notable story arc in the latter—this prequel focuses on three villains and the dark forces behind the scenes.

It’s also a new version of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, the popular mobile gacha game where the story of 0 originated. These versions offer a very different gameplay experience, so even if you’re familiar with the series, it’s helpful to keep these tips in mind.

    Know Your Place

You can bring up to eight characters into battles at once. However, most characters behind the front line can’t be commanded directly. This can make them seem like they’re not useful. But you can and should switch your fighters between the front and back rows as needed. Sometimes enemies are better handled when your characters are in the back, but you can call them forward when necessary.

Swapping characters replaces the one whose turn it is, and you have to wait a full turn before you can switch again. Moving a front-line character to safety when they’re low on health is also a good idea. There are healing skills that cover the entire back row, which can make your backups ready to fight again.

There’s a Skill in Selecting Skills

Don’t spend all your JP points on skills listed in the “Learn Skills” menu. Instead, also invest in unlocking Battle and Support Skill slots. Filling these slots with Masteries you find along your journey can significantly boost your party’s strength.

This may cost quite a bit, but it’s usually worth it. Attack Skills and Masteries can give you better elemental coverage for casters and more powerful melee attacks. Support Masteries like Eye for an Eye, for example, deal passive damage by reflecting physical hits at foes, especially when equipped to damage dealers.

    Kill Those Caits

This tip is useful for all Octopath titles, but especially so in Octopath Traveler 0. In many areas, you’ll encounter a monster called a Cait—a small, cat-like creature. While I love cats, these are dangerous because they tend to run away and are hard to hit. They have low health and take little damage from attacks.

Like Metal Slimes in Dragon Quest, it’s best to defeat them before they escape. Caits give the most experience points of any enemy in the area. For example, at levels 12-13, I defeated my first Cait and gained three full levels from just one battle. Although this is an exception—since game levels vary—killing Caits usually results in a lot of experience.

Jump Between Quests—and Keep the Rekindling the Flame Going

This game features a new town-rebuilding questline called “Rekindling The Flame,” which offers many rewards. It’s a full story arc with recommended levels for each section. It’s helpful to progress through these quests alongside your main tasks, but you don’t have to do everything at once.

If you wait to complete a specific quest until you have a higher-level party, you might face battles clearly meant for lower levels. You could demolish enemies now, but the treasures gained won’t be as useful later.

Later in the game, after finishing Master of Power, Wealth, and Fame quests, more storylines open up. Still, the “Rekindling The Flame” quests remain available as side content to enjoy.

Don’t Break the Bank on Path Actions

Path Actions are a major part of the series. Exploring each settlement, talking to NPCs, and engaging in their unique activities—such as Inquire, Invite, Contend, Impress, Purchase—makes the game meaningful and fun.

However, completing some actions, like Purchase or Haggle, costs leaves (money). It can be tempting to buy everything, but be careful with your cash reserves. Sometimes it’s best to ask yourself if a high chance to haggle is worth spending your money on items like healing grapes or gear. Focus on better items or stat boosters when they’re affordable; small purchases add up, and saving money can be more beneficial overall.

Blue Chests Are Not a Bother

Blue chests are scattered across the world, but you don’t need to worry about opening all of them immediately. The game will eventually give you a checklist or map markers showing where they’re located.

Instead of taking screenshots or trying to memorize every spot early on, wait until you unlock the checklist. Then, collecting their rewards will be much easier without guesswork.

Those Elite Enemy Difficulty Levels Are All Relative

When you first face enemies that appear directly on the field, the game introduces “elite enemies,” categorized by color to show their strength—weak (blue), average (yellow), or strong (red).

But these markers aren’t always accurate indicators of difficulty. Sometimes a red enemy is easier than a blue one, depending on your party composition. For example, at level 26, I defeated an elite enemy in less than two turns. The game doesn’t gauge its own content perfectly; experience shows that you shouldn’t judge enemy strength solely by their color.

It’s a Blessing in Disguise, Really

The “Blessing in Disguise” gear removes negative side effects from certain equipment pieces. I haven’t found it yet, but from the description, it’s valuable because it clears curses or detrimental effects that hinder gear’s usefulness.

Always look for potential hidden benefits in gear before selling or discarding it. Some items may have weaker stats but carry perks worth considering—so check thoroughly before making decisions.

    Why Not Wishvale?

In every town, there’s an inn, but in this game, you can skip paying for a rest. Just fast travel back to Wishvale and sleep in your own bed, which is available after completing the early parts of the “Rekindling The Flame” questline.

This saves precious leaves (the game’s currency) and is much cheaper than staying at an inn for full HP and SP restoration. It’s a smart way to conserve resources as you explore.
