  • Naughty Dog Tackles Pacing Issues in The Last of Us Part 2

Naughty Dog Tackles Pacing Issues in The Last of Us Part 2

The Last of Us Part 2 is well-made, but some players find that the game’s use of flashbacks can interrupt moments of high tension. This feedback is subjective, but Naughty Dog has responded by creating a new mode that lets players experience the story in chronological order instead of the original non-linear setup.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog explained their reasoning for this new mode.

    Linear Storytelling

The studio mentioned, “Players who have played the game know it tells its story in a non-linear way, with flashbacks showing Ellie and Abby’s motivations and emotional arcs. While this choice is intentional and reflects our themes, we often thought about what it would be like to play the story straight through. Now we can answer that question.”

They added, “With the new Chronological mode, players will get a closer look at Part II’s story. They will notice how Ellie receiving a guitar connects to her learning to play it, and see the parallels between Ellie and Abby’s adventures in Seattle, including how they influence each other.”

Creating this mode was not as easy as rearranging scenes, especially since gameplay mechanics change in the story. Naughty Dog emphasized that they aimed to provide experienced players with a fresh way to enjoy the narrative.

The studio encourages new players to experience the game in its original format before trying the chronological mode.

This new mode also introduces trophies, which, when completed, will reward players with outfits for Joel inspired by Nathan Drake. Admittedly, Joel may not wear them as well as Nathan does.

The patch that adds chronological mode is available now.

  • Kaitlyn Dever Filmed Abby Scenes With Joel After Mom’s Funeral

Kaitlyn Dever Filmed Abby Scenes With Joel After Mom’s Funeral

Warning: This article contains significant spoilers from The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2.

The pivotal moment that gamers anticipated finally unfolded in Sunday night’s episode of The Last of Us.

In this episode, Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) deceives Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Dina (Isabela Merced) into entering the mansion where her companions are hiding. Once they are inside, they put Dina into a temporary slumber, allowing Abby to reveal her true identity as the daughter of the doctor Joel killed in Salt Lake City.

Eager for vengeance, Abby shoots Joel in the knee with a shotgun and savagely assaults him with a golf club. Although Ellie storms into the room attempting to save Joel, she is captured before she can intervene. In a heartrending moment, despite Ellie’s desperate pleas, Abby fatally stabs Joel with a shard of the broken golf club. The group decides to spare Ellie, who crawls to Joel’s lifeless body and lies next to him.

This emotionally charged scene has become one of the most gut-wrenching moments in the series so far. Dever found it particularly challenging to film, as she had lost her mother to metastatic breast cancer shortly before production began.

“I lost my mom just a few weeks before we filmed this scene, and her funeral was three days before I started working on set,” Dever shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I was sort of in a fog. It was a blur.”

Before Abby ends Joel’s life, she delivers a haunting monologue explaining how her father’s death has led her to this brutal moment. According to Craig Mazin, co-creator of The Last of Us, Abby’s speech conveys her belief that “what he did was wrong” and that “we kill for the people we love.” This speech, which is not found in the game, served as a vital moment for Dever to illustrate Abby’s inner turmoil.

“This part of her is deeply human, struggling for so long, and she’s seeking a way to escape that conflict,” Dever elaborated. “But what connects all these characters, even in that moment, is their inherent flaws.”

The third episode of The Last of Us Season 2 is set to air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, April 27, on HBO and will be available for streaming on Max.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Release Date Is Finally Here

After a two-year break, one of the top video game adaptations is making a comeback this spring.

HBO has announced that The Last of Us season 2 will premiere at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, April 13. The debut episode will air on HBO and will also be available for streaming on Max. This season will feature a total of seven episodes.

Along with the premiere date, HBO has shared three new character posters showcasing Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby.

Season 2 is set five years after the events of the first season. According to HBO, “Joel and Ellie find themselves at odds with each other amid a world that is even more dangerous and unpredictable than before.”

By the conclusion of season 1, Joel successfully rescues Ellie from the Fireflies, who intended to perform a fatal procedure on her in an attempt to develop a cure for the Cordyceps virus. Instead of revealing the truth, Joel deceives Ellie, telling her the Fireflies were unable to create a cure. The first season wraps up with Joel and Ellie returning to the Jackson community.

This season will see the return of Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Joining the cast are new characters portrayed by Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, with guest appearances by Catherine O’Hara.

Inspired by Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game franchise, The Last of Us is penned and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The show’s first season received widespread acclaim, securing eight Emmys out of 24 nominations.

  • The Last of Us Part 3: What We Know So Far

The Last of Us Part 3: What We Know So Far

The conclusion of The Last of Us was left open to interpretation but didn't demand a follow-up. Nevertheless, Neil Druckmann and the Naughty Dog team believed they could explore more narratives within that universe, which led to the remarkable The Last of Us Part 2. In contrast to its predecessor, the sequel raised numerous unresolved questions that hinted at the necessity for another installment.

Originally, the developers were engaged in a multiplayer offshoot titled The Last of Us Online, but that initiative has since been discontinued, allowing the team to refocus on single-player experiences, including the anticipated The Last of Us Part 3. Naughty Dog stands out as one of the premier studios in PlayStation's roster, alongside Insomniac, which is preparing to release Marvel’s Wolverine, and Sucker Punch with Ghost of Yotei. While uncertainty surrounded a potential third chapter, recent developments confirm its creation is underway. What additional details have we uncovered while navigating through Clickers? Time to tune in and absorb everything we know about The Last of Us Part 3.

Although The Last of Us Part 3 is not likely to be featured among forthcoming Xbox Series X or Nintendo Switch titles, it may find a place in the list of upcoming PC releases, particularly if Sony continues its trend of releasing console exclusives on that platform.

    Release Speculation

While it’s confirmed that The Last of Us Part 3 is under development at Naughty Dog, its specific status and anticipated release date remain unknown. Given the studio's reputation for meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, it’s plausible that we may not see The Last of Us Part 3 until 2027 or later.

    Platforms

A house burns in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.
    Naughty Dog

What is certain is that The Last of Us Part 3 will be available exclusively on PlayStation platforms, particularly the PS5. Unless a new console generation is introduced and the development team opts not to make it cross-generational, players can expect to enjoy the game on their PS5.

Given that both earlier titles eventually launched on PC, it’s reasonable to predict The Last of Us Part 3 will also make its way to that platform. Historically, previous installments took over a year to transition to PC, so while circumstances may change by the time it releases, it’s safe to assume PC gamers will experience a wait of at least a year after its initial launch.

    Trailers

At this point, there are no trailers, screenshots, or even concept art for The Last of Us Part 3. Currently, we only have a few high-level statements confirming its existence.

Insights into Naughty Dog's return to single-player games came with its announcement regarding the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, where they stated, “We are currently developing more than one ambitious new single-player game, and we are eager to share more details when the time is right.”

Moreover, following the release of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, a making-of documentary titled Grounded 2 featured Druckmann discussing the potential for a third installment. He noted, “I've been considering whether a new concept exists, and for years I couldn't pin one down. But that's recently changed. While I don't have a complete story, I do have a concept that feels as compelling as I and II. It connects the trilogy, suggesting there is likely one more chapter to explore.”

Although it remains unconfirmed, Troy Baker, who voiced Joel, recently indicated in an interview with GQ that he is involved in whatever project Druckmann is currently working on. While this could pertain to one of the other games Naughty Dog has in development, there are numerous ways in which Joel or a new character portrayed by Troy could reappear in a third installment.

    Gameplay

    Naughty Dog

The gameplay style of The Last of Us series has maintained a combination of stealth action with limited resources and light horror elements. The third installment is expected to retain this foundation, introducing new weapons, adversaries, and gameplay mechanics in the vein of how the sequel built on its predecessor.

    Preorder

With only minimal announcements regarding The Last of Us Part 3, significant development is still on the horizon. Therefore, the opportunity for preorders is likely quite a way off.
