Mastering Custom Spell Crafting in Oblivion Remastered

Sure! Here’s a unique rewrite in American English:

One of the standout features of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is its magical system, particularly the ability for players to create their own spells. This feature becomes accessible after reaching a certain stage in the Mages Guild faction quests. Although customizable magic has been a hallmark of the Elder Scrolls series, it was notably absent in Skyrim. Thankfully, this remastered version of Oblivion brings it back, and many players are eager to explore it once more.

Crafting spells is straightforward once you get the basics down, but you first need to meet specific unlock criteria before you can utilize the Altar of Spellmaking. Once you’ve gained access, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with its mechanics and the different conditions for various spells to optimize your spell creation. Below is a guide on how to unlock and use the Altar of Spellmaking in Oblivion Remastered, along with some effective spells and effects you might want to try.

    Unlocking the Altar of Spellmaking

To begin making spells, you’ll need to unlock the Altar of Spellmaking. This can be done by obtaining recommendations from all seven regional Mages Guilds throughout Cyrodiil. Each guild requires you to converse with its leader and complete a quest, varying in difficulty. Every quest has unique requirements you’ll need to meet to receive a recommendation.

In short, you first have to join the Mages Guild, which you can do by visiting one of the following cities:

    • Anvil
    • Bravil
    • Bruma
    • Cheydinhal
    • Chorrol
    • Leyawiin
    • Skingrad

Complete the initial guild quest and then continue with subsequent ones until you’ve secured all seven recommendations. Afterward, you’ll unlock access to the Arcane University, located in the Imperial City. Inside, head to the Praxographical Center, where you’ll find two Altars of Spellmaking.

Additionally, another Altar can be found in the Arch-Mage’s quarters, accessible only after finishing the Mages Guild questline and becoming the Arch-Mage. There’s also one in Frostcrag Spire, but you’ll need to purchase two Magetallow Candles (2,000 gold each) from Aurelinwae to unlock it.

    Using the Altar of Spellmaking

When you interact with the Altar of Spellmaking, you’ll find a user-friendly crafting menu. On the left, a list of available effects is shown and you can select them to create a custom spell in the area on the right. Keep in mind that you can only use effects from spells you already know and can cast, which means you must meet three crucial conditions:

    1. Learn the spell.
    2. Achieve an appropriate rank in the corresponding skill.
    3. Have enough Magicka to cast it.

For instance, to add a 120-second Invisibility effect from Spectral Form, you’ll need to purchase it from Ita Rienus, attain a Master rank in Illusion, and have a maximum of at least 507 Magicka. If you meet these requirements, you can include the Invisibility effect in your custom spells. Also, remember that magical effects from racial traits and Greater or Lesser Powers can be utilized in spellmaking.

Next, for each spell effect you select, you can choose the target type and range. The options include:

    • Self: Effects only your character
    • Touch: Can be cast on anything within melee range
    • Target: Can be cast from a distance

Some spells may also offer an area of effect.

Calculating Skill, Level, Cost, & Magicka

As you add effects, the Altar of Spellmaking will calculate several stats for your spell: the skill required, the required rank in that skill, the gold cost to create it, and the Magicka cost to cast it. These factors depend on the number, strength, and duration of the selected effects.

You must possess the necessary skill level and gold to create your new spell, but you don’t need to have the maximum Magicka available immediately. It’s important to note that spells become less expensive to craft as your skill level increases. Once you’re set, click “Create,” and the spell will instantly be added to your spellbook for you to equip and use as usual.

Recommended Custom Spells to Craft First

The most effective spells will depend on your character build; for example, a Battlemage may find Destruction spells more beneficial than Illusion ones. Here are some suggested combinations that encourage thinking about how spell effects can work together.

For a Destruction-focused character, consider pairing a damaging spell with a debuff to maximize damage. You might want to blend Corrode Armor or Damage/Drain Endurance with a damage-over-time effect to weaken your foe.

Finally, stealth-oriented characters can benefit from various spells, such as Invisibility and Fortify Sneak, to remain undetected. A clever approach would be to combine these spells into one, allowing you to enter a highly effective stealth mode.

For those who enjoy Conjuration, you can create a spell that summons a complete set of gear at once by combining Bound Blade, Armor, Helmet, and Boots spells.

One of the standout aspects of spell crafting is the possibility of creating spells that can boost your attributes by 100 points at a time. You can use these to enhance your Speed for travel, Strength for carrying capacity, or Charm for better prices. While they may not be the most innovative spells, they can be incredibly useful in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

  • Ultimate Battlemage Guide: Skills, Spells, Gear & More!

Ultimate Battlemage Guide: Skills, Spells, Gear & More!

In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, having a specialized build can be great, but sometimes you just want more flexibility. That’s where the Battlemage class comes in—a versatile option that combines magic and melee skills, allowing you to tackle threats up close or at a distance. Unlike other titles in the series like Skyrim, Oblivion provides the ability to equip items in both hands, along with your chosen spell or magical ability. This gives you the choice to wield either a one-handed weapon with a shield or a two-handed weapon alongside your spells, giving you plenty of options in combat.

Battlemages can become incredibly powerful as you level up, but they do start off a bit weak. You’ll need to focus on leveling them up strategically to get the best results. Thanks to the revamped leveling system in Oblivion Remastered, this is easier than ever. Here’s everything you need to know to craft a formidable Battlemage capable of taking on the toughest challenges in the game.

Choosing Your Race, Class, & Birthsign

    Custom image by Katarina Cimbaljevic

If you’re aiming to become a Battlemage, you can skip creating a custom class—the default Battlemage is the way to go. Just focus on optimizing it for your playstyle.

For race, either the Breton or High Elf offers great advantages for a Battlemage. Bretons receive bonuses in Intelligence and Willpower, both critical for spellcasting, along with a constant Fortify Magicka effect that provides an additional 50 points. High Elves, on the other hand, benefit from boosts in Alteration, Destruction, and Mysticism, as well as a stronger Fortify Magicka effect. Check out the table below for a detailed overview of the bonuses each race offers.

Race Main Skills (+10) Secondary Skills (+5) Origin Attributes
    Breton
    • Conjuration
    • Mysticism
    • Restoration
    • Alchemy
    • Alteration
    • Illusion
    Systres
    • +10 Intelligence
    • +10 Willpower
    • -10 Agility
    • -10 Speed
    • -10 Endurance
    High Rock
    • +10 Intelligence
    • +10 Willpower
    • -10 Strength
    • -10 Agility
    • -10 Endurance
    High Elf
    • Alteration
    • Destruction
    • Mysticism
    • Alchemy
    • Conjuration
    • Illusion
    Auridon
    • +10 Intelligence
    • -10 Strength
    • -10 Speed
    Summerset Isle
    • +10 Intelligence
    • -10 Strength
    • -10 Endurance

Ultimately, you’ll want to decide which spell types suit your Battlemage best. If you prefer dealing damage with Destruction and enhancing yourself with Alteration, pick a High Elf. If you’d rather summon allies and heal yourself through Restoration, Bretons are the way to go.

As for your Birthsign, you can either select one that enhances your natural skills or one that offsets the weaknesses of a Battlemage. Personally, I lean towards maximizing damage output while compensating for their lower defense through gear (discussed in the gear section below). The table below includes some suggested Birthsigns worth considering.

    Birthsign Effects Ideal For…
    The Mage
    • Increases Magicka by 50 points.
    Building a spell-casting powerhouse.
    The Warrior
    • Fortifies Strength by 10 points.
    • Fortifies Endurance by 10 points.
Boosting melee attacks and early-game maximum health.
    The Lord
    • Increases Armor Rating by 15.
    • Boosts Magic resistance by 15%.
Improving your relatively low early-game defenses.
    The Lady
    • Fortifies Willpower by 10 points.
    • Fortifies Endurance by 10 points.
Enhancing maximum Magicka and spellcasting skills while increasing health.

Pick any of the above based on the spells you plan to use most often, along with how you prefer to maintain your survival in harder early-game battles.

    Top Spells for a Battlemage

    Healing/Restoration

Oblivion Remastered Destruction spell school symbols

As a Battlemage, spells are essential. They cover everything from healing to damage dealing. Start with a broad selection of Restoration spells, focusing on those in the Heal line. Initially, you’ll have Heal Minor Wounds, which can be enhanced later at Mages Guilds and the Arcane University.

    Immolating Blast

Throughout Oblivion, you’ll collect many Destruction spells, but perhaps Immolating Blast is the most powerful. It’s a straightforward point-and-shoot spell causing 110 damage instantly to its target.

You can purchase it from Vigge at the Skingrad Mages Guild or from Borissean once you reach the Arcane University, but keep in mind it requires a Master Destruction skill to cast.

    Shield/Fortify Endurance

With a low initial Endurance, you’ll need to find ways to compensate as a Battlemage. Utilizing spells from the Shield line can help boost your defense, or select spells that provide a Fortify Endurance effect to temporarily increase your health.

    Disintegrate

While buffing yourself, it’s also vital to weaken your opponents. You can get Disintegrate from Vigge or Gaspar at the Arcane University to chip away at your enemy’s armor and make them more susceptible to damage.

    Summon Xivilai

Your magical abilities also allow you to summon various creatures to assist you. One of the strongest is the Xivilai, a formidable Daedra. You can obtain Summon Xivilai from Borissean.

    Create Your Own Spells!

While pre-made spells can take you far, the true magic of Oblivion lies in your ability to create your own spells.

You’ll need to gather recommendations from every Mages Guild in the game to unlock the Arcane University for this feature.

Character with a bow in Oblivion Remastered

As a Battlemage, you’ll master various magical disciplines, giving you a wealth of magical effects to mix at the Altar of Spellmaking. This is where you’ll create your most potent spells—don’t hesitate to experiment and let your creativity flow.

Top Weapons & Armor for a Battlemage

    Heavy Armor

An armored Argonian looking out over the Imperial City in Oblivion Remastered.

Starting with relatively low Endurance can complicate things for a Battlemage, so rely on Heavy Armor early on to help keep your character safe. Progress through Steel, Orcish, Dwarven, Ebony, and Daedric armors, swapping unique pieces with useful effects as you go.

    Best Weapons for a Battlemage

As a Battlemage, you gain proficiency with both bladed and blunt weapons (though not shields). I suggest using a high-damage one- or two-handed melee weapon for your main attacks.

Your weapon choice isn’t crucial, as you will often buff your melee skills with spells. Instead of seeking out one exceptionally powerful sword, gather what you find and use enchanting to give your weapons unique magical properties. And remember to upgrade your weapon frequently to keep pace with tougher enemies.

Playing a Battlemage can be challenging, but with the right spells and careful progression, it can lead to an incredibly strong character. Just be aware of the challenges that come with this unique build in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

  • Ultimate Stealth Archer Setup (Skills, Gear, & Weapons)

Ultimate Stealth Archer Setup (Skills, Gear, & Weapons)

There’s absolutely no shame in wanting to play as a stealth archer in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. This build is the quintessential archetype within the Elder Scrolls universe and has even turned into an inside joke among fans. It’s a favorite in both Oblivion and Skyrim, and for good reason. Stealth archers can be remarkably powerful because they receive a significant damage boost when attacking from stealth. When you play as one, your main objective is to stay hidden for as long as possible and then strike invisibly for massive damage.

If you’re like me and have played the original Oblivion several times, you’re likely familiar with the mechanics of the stealth archer style. However, due to the changes in the leveling system between the original and Oblivion Remastered, the optimal build for stealth archers has changed a bit from what you may remember. Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time venturing into stealth archery in an Elder Scrolls title, here’s what you need to know to create the ultimate unseen assassin in Oblivion Remastered.

Best Skills & Attributes for a Stealth Archer Build

Choosing Your Race, Class, & Birthsign

At the start of Oblivion Remastered, you’ll make three choices that will shape your gameplay: your race, class, and birthsign. First up is your race, which you select during character creation. Your choice of race grants inherent bonuses to different skills and attributes.

The Wood Elf is the best choice for a stealth archer build due to their natural enhancements to Speed, Agility, Sneak, and Marksman. They truly embody the “stealth” and “archer” elements of a stealth archer. Alternatively, Dark Elves are also a solid choice, as they receive bonuses to Speed and Agility, plus advantages in Blade and Marksman. Keep in mind that while skill bonuses are based on your race, attribute bonuses vary slightly by origin.

    Race

    Skill Bonuses

    Origins

    Attribute Bonuses

    Wood Elf

    • Marksman +10
    • Sneak +10
    • Alchemy +10
    • Acrobatics +5
    • Light Armor +5
    • Alteration +5

    Grahtwood

    • +10 Agility
    • +10 Speed
    • -10 Strength
    • -10 Willpower
    • -10 Personality

    Reaper’s March

    • +10 Agility
    • +10 Speed
    • -10 Strength
    • -10 Willpower
    • -10 Endurance

    Dark Elf

    • Blade +10
    • Destruction +10
    • Athletics +5
    • Blunt +5
    • Light Armor +5
    • Marksman +5
    • Mysticism +5

    Vvardenfell

    • +10 Speed
    • -10 Willpower
    • -10 Personality

    Mainland

    • +10 Speed
    • -10 Willpower
    • -10 Personality

However, don’t stress too much about which race to choose. You can enhance your skills and attributes as you progress in the game, so feel free to design your character however you prefer.

Your choice of class and birthsign is crucial for customizing your build. Oblivion will suggest a class based on how you perform in the tutorial, but you can opt for one of your own choosing. Your selected class determines Major Skills and Favored Attributes. Major Skills experience levels up faster, while Favored Attributes receive +5 bonuses. Choose a class that grants you Major Skills you’ll actually use for steady leveling.

In Oblivion Remastered, you still gain experience from leveling skills that aren’t part of your class build; they just level up more slowly.

No surprise, the best classes for stealth archers come from the “Stealth” category. Classes like Thief, Agent, Acrobat, and Assassin are ideal. The table below lists their Favored Attributes and Major Skills. All these classes are strong candidates for stealth archer builds, so consider what other abilities you might want when choosing.

    Class

    Favored Attributes

    Major Skills

    Thief

    • Acrobatics
    • Light Armor
    • Marksman
    • Mercantile
    • Security
    • Sneak
    • Speechcraft

    Agent

    • Acrobatics
    • Illusion
    • Marksman
    • Mercantile
    • Security
    • Sneak
    • Speechcraft

    Acrobat

    • Acrobatics
    • Blade
    • Block
    • Marksman
    • Security
    • Sneak
    • Speechcraft

    Assassin

    • Acrobatics
    • Alchemy
    • Blade
    • Light Armor
    • Marksman
    • Security
    • Sneak

For your birthsign, definitely select The Thief. Although The Shadow offers invisibility, there are better methods to achieve it. The Thief is superior for stealth archers and arguably the best choice in Oblivion Remastered. It provides ten-point bonuses to Agility, Luck, and Speed—crucial for effective sneaking.

    Creating Your Own Class

If the preset options don’t appeal to you, consider making your own class in Oblivion Remastered. I recommend selecting Agility and Speed as your Favored Attributes—Agility enhances your bow damage, while Speed helps you evade danger swiftly.

For Major Skills, you should focus on Sneak and Marksman, which directly affect your ability to remain unseen and deal damage with bows. From there, consider adding any of the following:

    • Alchemy: Excellent for potion buffs to your stealth.
    • Blade or Blunt: Useful for close-quarters combat.
    • Illusion: Cast spells like Chameleon and Invisibility.
    • Mercantile: Gain higher prices when selling items, beneficial for Thieves Guild quests.
    • Mysticism: Use spells to detect enemies through walls, great for Mages Guild players.
    • Light Armor: Offers safety without the burden of heavy armor, facilitating movement.
    • Security: Handy for lockpicking, a useful skill for a stealth archer.
    • Speechcraft: Helps in gaining quicker NPC affinity for better prices, good for Thieves Guild endeavors.

As always, think about what additional skills you want your build to master and choose skills that will support your goals.

Best Weapons & Spells for a Stealth Archer Build

    Best Bows

Realistically, you can inflict considerable damage with any bow as a stealth archer. I suggest upgrading to better bows as you find them—starting with a Rusty Iron Bow and working your way to a Daedric Bow by the time you reach endgame. Due to the leveling system in Oblivion, you’ll frequently discover higher-quality bows on your defeated foes, so make sure to loot consistently.

That said, enchanted bows that deal extra damage are always desirable. The Bow of Infernal Frost, which inflicts additional Frost and Fire damage, is a good choice early in the game. You can regularly purchase it from M’raaj-Dar in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. Additionally, you might find Hatred’s Soul at the Chorrol Oblivion gate—this functions as a Daedric Bow, with bonuses for Drain Speed and Fire damage.

    Best Spells

Your spell selection for a stealth archer should include some essential options. The table below highlights the best spells to have in your arsenal for a stealth archer build in Oblivion Remastered. Be mindful of the skill level requirements needed to cast these spells. I’ve provided suggestions for both early-mid-game and late-game versions of each.

    Spell

    School & Level

    Effect

    Source

    Deathly Visage

    Journeyman Illusion

    Invisibility for 35 seconds

    M’raaj-Dar, Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary

    Spectral Form

    Master Illusion

    Invisibility for 120 seconds

    Ita Rienus, Bravil Mages Guild

    Minor Life Detection

    Novice Mysticism

Detect Life within 60 feet for 10 seconds

Start with this spell if Mysticism is one of your Major Skills

    Legendary Life Detection

    Master Mysticism

Detect Life within 120 feet for 120 seconds

    Aurelinwae, Mystic Emporium, Imperial City

    Shroudwalk

    Journeyman Illusion

    Chameleon 15% for 30 seconds

    M’raaj-Dar, Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary

    Cloak

    Master Illusion

    Chameleon 75% for 30 seconds

    Borissean, Arcane University, Imperial City

These spells are all designed to help you stay hidden or better detect enemy locations.

Best Armor for a Stealth Archer Build

    Dressed to Kill

To maintain your stealth, consider two guild questlines that enhance your skills: the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. It’s no surprise that the Dark Brotherhood questline offers the best armor for a stealth archer. The Shrouded Armor and Shrouded Hood you receive upon joining boost your Sneak, Illusion, Marksman, Blade, and Acrobatics skills—all vital for the stealth archer build we’re discussing.

However, you should also opt for Light Armor that allows fluid movement and stealth. Since your goal is to avoid engaging in situations where your armor matters, excellent Sneak and Marksman skills, along with a reliable bow and applicable spells, are your keys to success as a stealth archer in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

Understanding Skills, Traits, and Progression Unveiled

Sure! Here’s the content rewritten in American English:

I’ve been a fan of the Elder Scrolls series since Morrowind, and when Oblivion came out, I jumped right in. However, it wasn’t until I explored The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered that I finally grasped the intricacies of skills and attributes, just as a new leveling system was introduced. With many players experiencing Oblivion for the first time, understanding how skills and attributes work together is more crucial than ever.

There’s no shortage of activities in Oblivion, from closing those troublesome Oblivion gates to embarking on quirky side quests. Revisiting this game has filled me with nostalgia, so much so that I initially missed the significant changes to the game mechanics, particularly regarding leveling in the remaster. Oblivion Remastered has refined its mechanics for skills and their connections to leveling, striking a harmonious balance between the original system and Skyrim.

    Understanding Skills and Attributes

In Oblivion, a character’s abilities are divided into attributes and skills, where each influences the other and contributes to leveling up. This might seem complex for players familiar with Skyrim, as the fifth installment greatly simplified this aspect. In the original Oblivion, attributes directly governed skills; however, this relationship has shifted in Oblivion Remastered. While attributes still enhance some skills, they no longer dictate them entirely.

In the original Oblivion, each attribute influenced three skills, except for Luck, which impacted everything aside from Acrobatics and Athletics.

There are eight attributes in Oblivion, all levelable to a maximum of 100 points, with the exception of Luck. Your character’s starting attributes depend on their race, origin, and class in Oblivion Remastered. These attributes can improve as your character advances in levels.

    Attribute What It Does
Strength Affects damage with longswords, claymores, maces, war axes, battle-axes, and hand-to-hand. Increases carrying capacity and maximum health.
    Intelligence Determines maximum Magicka.
Willpower Influences Magicka regeneration speed and increases maximum fatigue.
Agility Affects damage with daggers, shortswords, and bows. Increases maximum fatigue and fatigue regeneration.
    Speed Determines movement speed.
Endurance Increases maximum health and health regeneration speed.
Personality Affects how favorably others view you, influencing prices at shops.
    Luck Impacts all skills.

Oblivion features 21 skills, categorized into Major and Minor skills based on your class. Each skill has five tiers: Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Master. The mechanics of skills in Oblivion Remastered resemble those in the original game as well as in Skyrim.

    Skill Effect
Acrobatics Determines jumping ability and fall damage.
Alchemy Influences potion creation and their quality.
Alteration Reflects your ability to cast Alteration spells.
Armorer Indicates your skill in repairing weapons and armor.
Athletics Affects running, sprinting, and swimming speed.
Blade Influences damage dealt with bladed weapons.
Block Affects damage mitigated while blocking.
Blunt Determines damage inflicted with blunt weapons.
Conjuration Reflects your ability to cast Conjuration spells.
Destruction Indicates your skill in casting Destruction spells.
Hand-to-Hand Represents damage dealt with unarmed attacks.
Heavy Armor Affects your proficiency in using heavy armor.
Illusion Reflects your capability to cast Illusion spells.
Light Armor Indicates effectiveness in wearing light armor.
Marksman Influences damage dealt with bows.
Mercantile Affects bargaining with merchants for better prices.
Mysticism Represents your ability to cast Mysticism spells.
Restoration Reflects capability in casting Restoration spells.
Security Determines how many lock tumblers stay in place when picks break.
Sneak Affects stealth and your ability to remain undetected.
    Speechcraft Reflects your persuasion capability.

Each skill improves through its use, and as you level up your skills, you unlock perks that enhance them. For example, advancing in Armorer means you use repair hammers less efficiently, while higher levels in Blade mean more damage output. Unlike Skyrim, there’s no option to choose specific perks; the progression from one to the next is straightforward.

    Major and Minor Skills Explained

Major and Minor Skills significantly impact leveling in Oblivion, making it essential to understand each category’s role. Your character’s class defines what skills belong in each category, whether you choose one of the many predefined classes or create your own. Each class has seven designated Major skills, while the rest are classified as Minor skills.

Major skills are the ones you’ll frequently utilize to fit your class and provide a 20-point boost to their base level. They level up faster than Minor skills and contribute more significantly to overall player experience points, helping you advance to the next level.

It’s worth noting that when you create a custom class, choosing a specialization grants a plus-five bonus to related skills, which also applies to predefined classes. This aspect is important for maximizing effectiveness.

Minor skills make up the remaining skills in Oblivion and offer about one-tenth of the potential toward leveling up each time they increase. Though these skills progress more slowly than Major ones, they still hold value and should not be neglected.

    Improvements in Oblivion Remastered Leveling

The leveling system in Oblivion Remastered deviates significantly from the original, and it’s a welcome change. Gone are the days of meticulously balancing skills and focusing on specific ones to raise certain attributes. Now, all skill increases contribute to your overall level, with Major skills giving a greater boost than Minor ones.

If you find yourself over-leveled in a non-combat skill (like lockpicking or acrobatics) and struggle in combat, you can shift your focus to combat skills temporarily. The Arena questline is especially useful for this.

Leveling up feels like a much better balance between the original Oblivion and Skyrim, as skills are no longer intertwined with attributes. Previously, you could only boost attributes based on related skills. Now, you have much greater flexibility in choosing how attributes improve when you level up.

With each level-up in Oblivion Remastered, you receive 12 Virtue Points that can be allocated among three attributes however you like. Even if you only sleep for an hour, you’ll need to rest to level up. Each attribute can be increased by a maximum of five points per level, offering exciting possibilities for creating diverse builds in Oblivion Remastered, with better health gains that apply retroactively, making higher levels less daunting.

  • Discovering and Utilizing Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered

Discovering and Utilizing Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered

In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, the enchanting system utilizes Soul Gems. These gems are crucial for players who favor a magic-based approach, like mages or mage hybrids, as they are essential for maintaining any enchantments on your weapons.

The challenge lies in locating and filling these gems. Finding them can be tricky, and guidance on where to search is scarce. However, they are not impossible to discover, and the effort to acquire them is worthwhile for enhancing your character.

    All Types of Soul Gems

    Know What You’re Searching For

There are multiple types of Soul Gems available in the game, each with unique characteristics for enchanting your weapons and items. Most Soul Gems are single-use, meaning they are consumed once employed. Exceptionally, Azura’s Star can be refilled indefinitely, making it a valuable tool for late-game enchanting.

Each Soul Gem has a monetary value based on whether it contains a trapped soul. The higher the quality of the gem, the more challenging it will be to locate during your adventures. You’re allowed to carry multiple gems at once, which is beneficial since they typically can only be used once.

    How to Obtain Soul Gems

Methods and Locations to Obtain Gems

There is a hidden tomb that holds chests with Soul Gems in them in Oblivion Remastered.

Overall, there are five main ways to acquire Soul Gems. Some gems are easier to locate than others, particularly those of lower rank. All of them can be discovered by exploring the Cyrodiil map. Keep in mind that loot scales with your level, so as you level up, your chances of finding higher-ranked gems increase.

    • Check containers like chests, sacks, and display cases, which occasionally hold gems. One hidden location in the game is a tomb that contains several Soul Gems in a chest.
    • Purchase them directly from merchants, such as General Goods and Mage vendors. These shops carry a limited stock of gems that refresh every seven days in-game. Some gems may already be filled with a soul, so consider the type of soul included.
    • Loot NPCs and enemies after defeating them or through pickpocketing; they may carry gems.
    • Receive some gems as quest rewards, notably Azura’s Star, which you obtain after completing the quest at the Shrine of Azura.
    • Create specific gems, like the Black Soul Gem, by placing a Grand Soul Gem on a special altar and casting the Soul Trap spell.

    Filling and Using Soul Gems

Choose Your Souls Wisely Before Filling

To capture a soul in a Soul Gem, you must cast the Soul Trap spell. Different levels of the spell exist, distinguished by their duration. You need a Mysticism score of at least 25 to use the lowest tier. If you lack this, head to Edgar’s Discount Spells in the Imperial City Market district to purchase the Minor Life Detection spell and use it frequently.

You can find the Soul Trap spell at various mage vendors, like Treyvond the Redguard at the Mages Guild building near Cheydinhal West Gate. Cast this spell on an enemy, then defeat them before the spell’s duration expires. It’s best to weaken the enemy beforehand to avoid the spell running out too soon. If your selected Soul Gem has enough space, their soul will be captured. You can also add this spell as an enchantment to different weapons.

Most of these gems are specifically for capturing creature souls. There are many creatures available, such as Bears, Wraiths, Ghosts, Goblins, Minotaurs, and Will-o-the-Wisps. If you wish to capture human souls, you need a Black Soul Gem. The process remains the same: use the Soul Trap spell and defeat the human before the spell ends. Remember to check your inventory to ensure you have an empty Black Soul Gem.

The higher the enemy’s difficulty, the greater the rank of Soul Gem required for trapping its soul. If you hold multiple empty Soul Gems, the soul may fill the lowest tier gem available in your inventory, depending on the soul’s rank. Keep a close eye on the types of empty Soul Gems in your inventory and utilize the Soul Trap spell on enemies to maximize your gems’ effectiveness.

If you only possess a lower-tier gem when defeating an enemy with a higher soul rank, your gem will remain empty.

There are many suitable creatures within each soul category, providing numerous opportunities to fill your gems. However, the game does not explicitly tell you what type of soul a creature possesses. To determine a creature’s soul type, observe its size and power. Once you successfully capture the soul in the appropriate gem, you can apply it to your weapon or armor.

To enchant your chosen item, you will need to use the Altar of Enchanting. This altar becomes available after you earn the Apprentice rank in the Mage Guild. After approaching the altar, select the Soul Gem, then the item you wish to enchant, and finally, the desired effect. To recharge an enchanted item, simply click on the gem containing a soul in your inventory and choose to recharge. The duration of the soul enchantment depends on the rank of the Soul Gem. In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a higher-ranked soul allows you to use your weapon or armor for an extended period before needing to recharge.

  • Where to Find Ectoplasm in Remastered Oblivion

Where to Find Ectoplasm in Remastered Oblivion

Among the various crafting materials in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, Ectoplasm is one of the rarest. This substance, drawn from undead spirits, is vital for numerous quests, yet its locations in the game are not readily apparent. To collect Ectoplasm for your tasks or crafting, you’ll need to either speak with specific vendors or defeat certain unique enemies.

When used as a crafting ingredient, Ectoplasm can produce four distinct effects: Shock Damage, Dispel, Fortify Magicka, and Damage Health. However, its most notable application is within the Fighters Guild for the “Drunk and Disorderly” quest, where you’ll need to gather five pieces, making it essential to collect a significant amount.

Shops That Sell Ectoplasm in Oblivion Remastered

Rely on Luck for the Right Item

Unfortunately, none of the shops stock Ectoplasm as a regular item. However, you can find it in various locations. For instance, there’s one piece of Ectoplasm located in All Things Alchemical, a shop in Skingrad. This store is next to the Colovian Traders and Hammer and Tongs, but you’ll have to steal it, potentially putting you at risk of getting caught.

While other alchemical vendors might carry Ectoplasm, whether it appears in their inventory is up to chance. Ectoplasm can sometimes be available for purchase in alchemy shops, but it’s not consistent. On different days, as you interact with these vendors, you might be fortunate enough to find it at a good price.

Best Places to Find Ghosts & Ectoplasm

Defeat the Undead to Obtain the Crafting Material

Given the scarcity of Ectoplasm in stores, one of the easiest ways to collect it is by defeating ghostly enemies. Ghosts and undead beings come in various forms, but only specific Ethereal Undead will drop Ectoplasm when defeated. The following table outlines quests where you can encounter these types of enemies:

    Quest

    Location

    Where to Start

    “The Ghost Ship of Anvil”

    Anvil

    Benirus Manor

    “Where Spirits Have Lease”

    Anvil

    Serpent’s Wake

    “The Forlorn Watchman”

    Mouth of the Panther

Near the wreck of the Emma May ship

One significant change in Oblivion Remastered compared to the original game is that a piece of Ectoplasm previously found near Meridia’s Shrine is no longer available, making it more challenging to locate this crafting ingredient.

Ghosts, Wraiths, Spectral Sailors, and Sanctified Dead drop Ectoplasm, with standard undead having a one in three chance of transforming into one of these types. Many Ethereal Undead can be found in underground areas, particularly within major cities. When visiting a Great Chapel, check the undercrofts where you can frequently find Ethereal Undead:

    • Anvil
    • Bravil
    • Bruma
    • Leyawiin
    • Skingrad

Most undercroft areas are locked, so you may need to pick a lock or use a key to access them. Ethereal Undead are resistant to standard weapon attacks, as well as silence spells, Frost, and Poison damage, making them challenging adversaries. Using fire magic is a good strategy to take them down, after which you can collect Ectoplasm from the remnants they leave behind.

If you prefer not to break into chapel catacombs, consider exploring locations like Sancre Tor or Rielle, where Ethereal Undead spawn consistently. Regardless of how you encounter them, defeating Ethereal Undead in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered will ensure you can obtain Ectoplasm for your quests or crafting.

  • Guided Journey Through the Brotherhood Betrayed Quest

Guided Journey Through the Brotherhood Betrayed Quest

Vampires pose a significant danger in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, but the quest “A Brotherhood Betrayed” is far from straightforward. As you explore Bruma, you may come across a crime scene featuring two lifeless bodies. A local named Bradon Lirrian has been murdered, yet the city guard insists he was the vampire responsible for the recent deaths of several beggars.

Bradon’s wife, however, doubts this conclusion. The entire situation seems heavily reliant on the claims of a supposed vampire hunter named Raynil Dralas. “A Brotherhood Betrayed” invites you to delve deeper into the mystery through a multi-step investigation. By talking to the right characters and visiting key locations, you’ll uncover vital information—and potentially earn some rewards along the way.

How to Begin “A Brotherhood Betrayed”

    Visit Bradon Lirrian’s Residence

You can hear about Bradon’s demise through local gossip, but you don’t need to rely on hearsay to kickstart the quest. Head straight to Bradon Lirrian’s home, which you can find marked on your map in Bruma. Inside, you’ll see Bradon’s body alongside a few guards and his grieving widow.

Don’t attempt to loot Bradon’s body. The first time you try, you’ll get a warning, but if you attempt it again, a bounty will be placed on your head.

To get more information, engage Carius Runellius, one of the guards, using the persuasion mini-game to improve his opinion of you. After he fills you in, talk to Erline Lirrian, Bradon’s widow, to hear her side and agree to assist her.

Finding Raynil Dralas in “A Brotherhood Betrayed”

    Key NPCs to Interact With

If you’re curious, you’ll discover that Raynil Dralas is staying at Olav’s Tap and Tack, the budget inn by the east gate. While you won’t find him there, speaking with Olav, the innkeeper, is crucial. Convince him through persuasion, and then inquire about Raynil to get a key to the vampire hunter’s room. Go inside and check behind the dresser to find a book titled Gelebourne’s Journal.

Upon reading Gelebourne’s Journal, you’ll learn that Bradon, Raynil, and Gelebourne were part of an adventuring trio, with each holding one of three magical amulet keys. This raises serious doubts about Raynil’s assertion that Bradon was a vampire. Even though simply reading the book will progress your quest, be sure to add it to your inventory before leaving Olav’s Tap and Tack.

Return to Bradon’s residence and present your findings to Carius Runellius. If you left the book behind, he won’t take you seriously until you fetch it. Once you successfully convince him, Carius will suggest meeting him at Olav’s after an hour. When you meet, he will reveal that Dralas has left town but points you toward a nearby cave mentioned in the journal. He will mark the location on your map, allowing you to head there directly.

Carius warns that you have only a day to catch Raynil, so you need to act quickly. You have a 24-hour time limit before Raynil escapes. Go to the cave immediately, ensuring you have your gear ready, as Raynil is waiting inside and is eager to fight. Once you defeat him, loot his body for the keys, then open the chest in the main cavern to retrieve a Mundane Amulet. You can also explore some additional areas of the cave, although there isn’t much to find.

    Rewards for “A Brotherhood Betrayed”

    A Valuable Amulet

After obtaining the amulet, return to Bradon’s home and speak with Erline once more. She will reveal the true nature of the amulet by saying the word “Brotherhood” over it, transforming it into a Phylactery of Litheness that she will give to you. This amulet grants a moderate Fortify Speed effect, enhancing your character’s abilities.

With everything wrapped up, you have successfully completed “A Brotherhood Betrayed.” There’s no need to return to Carius to conclude the quest. While you can’t save Bradon from the vampire hunter, you can still acquire a valuable amulet for your efforts. If you’re looking to move a bit faster in Oblivion Remastered, assisting Erline is worth your time.

  • Unlocking the Wabbajack in Oblivion Remastered: A Quick Guide

Unlocking the Wabbajack in Oblivion Remastered: A Quick Guide

The Wabbajack is undoubtedly one of the most eccentric items in Tamriel, and it makes a grand return in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. This Daedric Artifact, associated with Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness, has a rather unpredictable effect. While it may not be as chaotic as its version in Skyrim, it can still unleash significant chaos and has its practical applications in specific circumstances. However, it’s essential to grasp all its functionalities and limitations before using it indiscriminately on others.

To acquire the Wabbajack, you must complete Sheogorath’s personal quest, aptly titled “Sheogorath.” This quest is entirely distinct from the Shivering Isles DLC, which also prominently features the Daedric Prince. Some dialogue may vary depending on your progress in the DLC, but the procedure to obtain the Wabbajack remains unchanged. Here’s everything you need to know about tracking down this unusual artifact and using it to unleash mayhem across Cyrodiil.

    How to Obtain the Wabbajack

    An Offering for Sheogorath

You can start this quest as early as level two, but you’ll need to locate Sheogorath’s Shrine on your own. It’s positioned at the map marker located south of Bravil and north of Leyawiin, approximately halfway along the road that follows the western bank of the Lower Niben. Approach the Shrine and look for an NPC named Ferul Ravel. He will inform you that Sheogorath only interacts with mortals who bring him an offering. He asks for:

    • A head of lettuce
    • A ball of yarn
    • A Lesser Soul Gem

You’ll need to gather all three items without any hints from the quest. The lettuce and yarn are generally easy to come by, as they can often be found in chests throughout the world. Check homes and inns in any city or even in the nearby town of Border Watch for these items. You can typically find Soul Gems at Mages Guild locations or in magic shops.

If you’ve embarked on The Shivering Isles and don’t mind traveling back and forth, you can often find similar offerings around Sheogorath’s shrines in New Sheoth.

Once you have all three offerings, interact with the shrine to meet either Sheogorath or Haskill, depending on your progress in The Shivering Isles. After an introductory dialogue, they will inform you that Sheogorath finds Border Watch dull and wishes to inject some excitement into it. Your objective is to fulfill a peculiar prophecy known as the K’sharra. You’ll be responsible for the first two steps, while Sheogorath will complete the rest.

    The K’sharra Prophecy

Head over to Border Watch and start inquiring about the K’sharra prophecy. Most locals will direct you to Ri’Bassa, the town’s shaman. He tends to roam the small town, so finding him might take some time. If you’re having difficulties, check the Border Watch Inn at 11 AM or 7 PM, or his home between 10 PM and 4 AM.

When you find Ri’Bassa, use a mix of bribery and Oblivion‘s persuasion minigame to increase his favor towards you (aim for at least 60). Ask him about the K’sharra, and he will tell you that the prophecy consists of three signs: the plague of vermin, the plague of famine, and the plague of fear, which he refuses to elaborate on.

    Plague of Vermin

Go to the Border Watch Inn, where you’ll find two display cases filled with various cheeses. Look for the Olroy Cheese, which is isolated in the left showcase. You can either pick the lock (this is a Very Hard lock) using your Security skills or an Open spell, or you can steal the key from the innkeeper, S’thasa.

Take the Olroy Cheese and place it in the cooking pot just outside to the left. After a brief moment, a swarm of rats will emerge and gather around the pot. Ri’Bassa will arrive shortly after to sprinkle rat poison. Make sure to observe this, then speak with Ri’Bassa to confirm he has witnessed the first sign of the prophecy.

    Plague of Famine

From the cooking pot, head south until you find a small pen containing sheep. You need to kill the sheep to convince Ri’Bassa that the second plague is occurring.

You can achieve this in two ways: use the rat poison Ri’Bassa left near the cooking pot and add it to the sheep’s feeding trough, or you can attack the sheep directly with weapons and spells. While poisoning is a quieter, more stealthy approach, just wait for the sheep to eat and they will drop dead all at once.

    Plague of Fear

After you’ve completed this task, you will receive a telepathic message from Sheogorath instructing you to head to the town center. Stand near the stone stairs and watch as the sky turns crimson and flaming wolves rain down.

Once you receive the update to return to Sheogorath’s Shrine, do just that. Upon your arrival, either Sheogorath or Haskill will greet you, and you will be rewarded with the Wabbajack for your efforts in spreading chaos across the realm.

    What the Wabbajack Does

    Effects & Tips

The Wabbajack is a distinct staff that casts a magic effect on any creature (excluding humans): for ten seconds after activation, it randomly transforms the target into one of several creatures.

    • Daedroth
    • Deer
    • Goblin
    • Ogre
    • Rat
    • Sheep
    • Skeleton
    • Troll

There’s no way to predict which creature the Wabbajack will spawn; all of the options are equally likely and appear in no specific order. For example, you might try to turn a goblin into a sheep for an easier fight, only to end up with a Daedroth instead. Additionally, the transformed creature will have a full health bar, and when they revert back, the original target will heal completely.

Therefore, while the Wabbajack may not always turn foes into manageable sheep, it does have specialized uses. Creatures resistant to normal damage, like ghosts and will-o-the-wisps, can be transformed into living beings that are more vulnerable to physical attacks. Since using the Wabbajack spawns aggressive creatures, it offers clever opportunities to eliminate non-hostile NPCs without attracting a bounty or blood price.

In conclusion, while the Wabbajack may not be the most universally useful item in Cyrodiil, it provides an entertaining diversion and can be advantageous in certain scenarios. Completing the “Sheogorath” quest is certainly worthwhile as you explore The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

  • Becoming a Vampire in Oblivion Remastered: A Guide to Curing It

Becoming a Vampire in Oblivion Remastered: A Guide to Curing It

Sure! Here’s a unique rewrite of your content in American English:

In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, players have the option to embrace vampirism, but it’s essential to think things through before making a permanent decision. The main draw of becoming a vampire, aside from the aesthetic appeal, is the various buffs it provides for your character’s stats, alongside new gameplay mechanics. However, adopting this dark path also brings a range of challenges, including the need for caution when wandering during the day, facing certain foes, or engaging in illegal activities.

Rest assured, if you find that vampirism isn’t your style after all, you can easily go back to your former life. One critical point to remember is that the cure for vampirism is permanent; once you’re cured, you can’t revert back to being a vampire. Therefore, it’s crucial to fully grasp the implications of vampirism in Oblivion Remastered before diving into that lifestyle.

    Quick Links

    How to Become a Vampire

    Bite Me

You can become a vampire in Oblivion Remastered through three primary methods, ranked from easiest to hardest. The simplest approach is to be attacked by an existing vampire. You can encounter vampires throughout the game’s world, especially early on if you take on the quest "Order of the Virtuous Blood." They’re also commonly found in the sewers beneath the Imperial City, particularly in the Bloodworks, which is accessible from the Market Sewers.

Every time a vampire attacks you in close combat, there’s a chance you could contract Porphyric Hemophilia, a disease that eventually leads to vampirism. To do this, just visit locations with hostile vampires, engage them in combat, and let them hit you while you heal until you notice a pop-up indicating you’ve contracted the disease.

Porphyric Hemophilia will turn you into a vampire if left untreated for 72 in-game hours. Even if you heal from it, you can contract it again; it’s only the cure for full-fledged vampirism that is irreversible. The first three times you sleep after the 72-hour period, you’ll experience interrupted rest filled with weird dreams and gain some vampiric powers. After waking up for the third time post-infection, congratulations—you’re officially a vampire!

    Msirae’s Heart

In addition, the Mehrunes’ Razor DLC provides a unique method for becoming a vampire. You’ll need to travel to Sundercliff Watch, a vast dungeon located on the eastern edge of the map, right beneath the "s" in Lake Canulus.

Once inside, complete the quest "Unearthing Mehrunes’ Razor." At the end, you’ll have the chance to remove a Beating Heart from the body of Msirae Faythung. Consume this heart, and you’ll contract Porphyric Hemophilia, leading to vampirism after three days.

Note: You can also create a potion that infects you using the Beating Heart, but this requires maxed-out Alchemy skills.

Keep in mind that consuming Msirae’s heart also grants you four points of Infamy, which may affect your interactions with certain NPCs. Additionally, you’ll incur Cannibal’s Prion, which lowers your Agility and Intelligence by 20 points each. You won’t be able to cure the Cannibal’s Prion without also eliminating your Porphyric Hemophilia, so plan accordingly. If you’re just waiting to transform, that might not be a significant issue.

    Dark Brotherhood

Lastly, joining the Dark Brotherhood is another way to become a vampire, though it involves more quests. To pursue this route, you’ll need to engage in several quests assigned by Vicente Valieri:

    • "A Watery Grave"
    • "Accidents Happen"
    • "Scheduled for Execution"
    • "The Assassinated Man"

After completing these missions, Vicente will offer to turn you into a vampire. Simply select the "Dark Gift" option when speaking with him, and the quest "Darkness Eternal" will commence.

Warning: The quest "The Purification" will prevent Vicente from transforming you, so ensure you accept his offer before proceeding with that quest.

Afterward, you’ll have to rest somewhere. Vicente will visit during the night, and when you awaken, you’ll be notified that you’ve contracted Porphyric Hemophilia, setting you on the path to becoming a vampire.

Pros & Cons of Being a Vampire

    Feeding

Once you become a vampire, you unlock a new ability: feeding on sleeping NPCs. To do this, walk up to an NPC and press the interaction button (E on PC, A on Xbox, X on PS5). The buffs and debuffs associated with vampirism are linked to how long it’s been since your last feeding.

It’s advisable to feed in places like guild halls and inns where many NPCs sleep. Just be cautious; feeding counts as a crime, and being caught will incur a bounty of 40 gold. Most NPCs won’t awaken from feeding, except for guards, who are likely to catch you in the act.

    Buffs & Debuffs

The following table summarizes the buffs and debuffs associated with vampirism:

Time Since Feeding Vampirism Skill & Attribute Bonus Normal Weapon Resistance Fire Weakness Sunlight Damage per Second Ability
    25% +5 5% 20% 0 Hunter’s Sight: Grants Night Eye and Detect Life for 30 seconds.
    24–48 hours 50% +10 10% 30% 1 Vampire’s Seduction: Charm target by 50 points, once per day.
49–72 hours 75% +15 15% 40% 4 Reign of Terror: Silence and Demoralize for 60 seconds, once per day.
    > 72 hours 100% +20 20% 50% 8 Embrace of Shadows: Night Eye for 90 seconds, Invisibility for 180 seconds, once per day.

Elsa have benefits for stealth-focused characters, providing skills that enhance sneakiness and enemy detection. However, it also presents a significant vulnerability to fire damage, complicating your ability to navigate key story missions.

    Other Advantages & Disadvantages

Here are the other key benefits and drawbacks of being a vampire:

    • 100% resistance to disease and paralysis.
    • You will suffer sunlight damage when exposed during the day, affected by factors like sun position and weather.
    • You can’t fast travel or wait while taking sunlight damage; planning is essential.
    • Your appearance will change with pale skin and altered eye color, dependent on your character’s race.
    • Some NPCs will refuse to interact with you at advanced levels of vampirism, while others may show less affinity.

Consider saving vampirism for later gameplay. It can complicate early challenges, especially with underdeveloped stealth skills and limited fast travel options. It might even hinder your progress in the main quest, making it wise to experience most of the game before diving into this dark path.

    How to Cure Vampirism

    "Vampire Cure"

If vampirism turns out not to be your cup of tea, the traditional coping method in the original Oblivion was the quest named "Vampire Cure." This has made its return in the remastered version, and I suggest opting for the Font of Renewal method instead, which is simpler and quicker.

To start "Vampire Cure," inquire with any NPC about a "Cure for Vampirism," and they’ll direct you to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University. He will then send you to Count Hassildor in Skingrad, requiring you first to get Hal-Liurz’s consent to speak with the Count. Eventually, you’ll be directed to the witch Melisandre, who will ask for five Grand Soul Gems. Once you acquire the gems, she’ll provide a list of ingredients to gather, spending a full day to produce the potion to cure your vampirism.

    Font of Renewal

For a more efficient option, just interact with the Font of Renewal located in Deepscorn Hollow, a player house included in the remaster. Travel to the southern island on the map, enter Deepscorn Hollow, and you’ll find the Font of Renewal ready to cure your vampirism quickly and definitively.

Feel free to let me know if you need any more adjustments!

  • Unlocking the Indestructible Lockpick in Oblivion Remastered

Unlocking the Indestructible Lockpick in Oblivion Remastered

Sure! Here’s a rewritten and unique version of the content in American English:

Mastering Lockpicking in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

The lockpicking mini-game in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered presents quite a challenge, but there’s a straightforward method to bypass it entirely. Each Elder Scrolls installment has its own approach to lockpicking; most gamers today probably recognize the simplified method from Skyrim, where you spin the pick, twist the lock, and retry if you fail. In contrast, Oblivion’s lockpicking process can feel complex and punishing, often breaking your picks at the slightest miscalculation. As a longtime Oblivion enthusiast, I found it took some time to readjust when the remaster debuted. Luckily, you can automate the lockpicking experience in Oblivion, but you must acquire a special item linked to a side quest.

    Starting Nocturnal’s Quest

To obtain the unbreakable lockpick, known as the Skeleton Key, you’ll need to undertake a quest for the Daedric Prince Nocturnal. You can initiate this quest, aptly titled "Nocturnal," once you reach level 10. To begin, head to her shrine located north of Leyawiin, which can be found along the main road, roughly parallel to the map’s label “County Leyawiin.” Asking local NPCs about Daedric shrines may help you locate it—some will even add it to your map.

Tip: If you’re close to Nocturnal’s Shrine but can’t spot it, check your compass for a marker indicating its location.

Fast travel to Leyawiin if needed, and speak with Nocturnal’s followers near the shrine. You’ll primarily want to engage with Mor gra-Gamorn. When you express interest in approaching the statue, she may be hesitant but will relent, realizing Nocturnal might have summoned you. After interacting with Nocturnal, she reveals that her Eye has been stolen by thieves and requests you retrieve it.

    Retrieving the Unbreakable Lockpick

Nocturnal suspects that two Argonians in Leyawiin are responsible for the theft. Your next step is to gather information from the locals; city guards are particularly useful. While you can ask about the “Eye of Nocturnal,” it’s more effective to choose the “Leyawiin” dialogue option whenever it appears.

Eventually, you’ll learn that the thieves, Weebam-Na and Bejeen, have discussed a valuable jewel they stole. If they are tight-lipped, try your hand at the game’s persuasion mechanics to gain their trust.

Next, track down Bejeen and Weebam-Na, and find a good spot to eavesdrop on their conversation. The best location is to sneak into Weebam-Na’s house, marked on your map, and conceal yourself in a corner. Be careful; if they discover you, they will cease their discussion.

    Locating the Eye of Nocturnal

Allow their conversation to unfold, and you’ll learn that they’ve hidden the Eye of Nocturnal in Tidewater Cave, located southeast of Leyawiin. This location will be marked on your map. Proceed to the cave to advance in the quest.

Although Tidewater Cave is relatively compact, beware of the Kalperklan Trolls that inhabit it. Like most trolls, they are vulnerable to fire—use spells or enchanted weapons to exploit this weakness. Feel free to explore the cavern as you may find loot in the southeastern and northeastern rooms.

Tip: Trolls are terrified of water and won’t follow you across it. Use this tactical advantage to take them down from a distance.

To find the Eye of Nocturnal, turn left upon entering the cave. Follow the hall straight until you reach another left turn. Continue until you see a water opening, dive in, and to your right, you’ll spot the Eye of Nocturnal glowing brightly beside a chest.

Once you retrieve the Eye, head back to Nocturnal’s Shrine, either on foot or via fast travel. As a reward, Nocturnal will gift you the Skeleton Key—a lockpick that can’t break and offers additional benefits.

Effects and Uses of the Skeleton Key

The Skeleton Key serves as an unbreakable lockpick, which theoretically saves you money on disposable picks. However, it has an even greater advantage: having the Skeleton Key means you can avoid the lockpicking mini-game altogether (unless you enjoy the challenge). On PC, pressing "R," "X" on Xbox, or "Square" on PS5 during a lockpicking attempt lets your character "auto-attempt" to open the lock. The game will assess your odds based on your Security skill and the lock’s difficulty, rolling for success.

When you auto-attempt, the lock will open if successful—if not, your lockpick won’t break, allowing you to keep trying without penalty. Thus, with the Skeleton Key, you can just keep auto-attempting until the lock clicks open, eliminating the need for manual lockpicking.

Note: Some story-critical locks in Oblivion require specific keys and cannot be picked, even with the Skeleton Key.

If manual lockpicking remains appealing, the Skeleton Key enhances your experience by boosting your Security skill by 40 points. A higher skill means that once you fail to set a tumbler, subsequent tumbler failures are less likely to cause everything to reset. This versatile item makes accessing doors or treasures in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered much easier, maintaining an engaging experience.

Fingers of the Mountain: Choose Earana or Teekeeus?

Here’s a rewritten version of your content in American English, tailored for clarity and originality:

If you’re looking to join the Arcane University in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, you’ll first need recommendations from local Mages Guilds. An intriguing recommendation situation occurs in Chorrol. During the day, you’ll spot a woman named Earana lingering around the Mages Guild, which many residents find peculiar. If you speak with Teekeeus, the local guild leader, he’ll ask you to discover what Earana is after. She’ll reveal that she’s seeking a book titled Fingers of the Mountain.

Although Teekeeus initially dismissed the book as mere legend, he grows concerned about Earana’s interest in it and requests that you retrieve it for him instead. Finding the book is straightforward, but deciding whom to return it to adds a layer of complexity. While Teekeeus appears to be the more trustworthy choice, there may be valid reasons behind Earana’s grudge against him, making it tough to determine who deserves your trust.

How to Get Fingers of the Mountain

A Quick Trip Up the Mountain

To start the “Chorrol Recommendation” quest, you need to speak specifically with Teekeeus. After that, head outside to find Earana in the day. If she’s not around, try The Grey Mare, the local inn where she often stays. Obtain the quest from her, then return to Teekeeus to have it marked on your map.

Exit Chorrol through the North Gate and take the mountain path where the quest indicator leads you. At the end, you’ll discover Cloud Top, marked by a charred corpse next to a broken pillar. Here, you can collect the Fingers of the Mountain from the body and return to Chorrol, where you’ll decide whom to give the book to.

What Happens If You Give the Book to Teekeeus

    Prioritizing the Recommendation

Handing the book over to Teekeeus is the easy choice. He will accept Fingers of the Mountain and subsequently give you the recommendation you need. After securing the book, he will store it safely in a chest in his Mages Guild room. As a member of the Mages Guild, you’ll have access to this chest, allowing you to retrieve it again if you wish. Completing this task rewards you with two fame points.

Don’t waste your time reading Fingers of the Mountain—it’s just an item, not an actual book.

If you talk to Earana after giving the book to Teekeeus, she’ll express disappointment but quickly ask you to steal it back for her. This initiates “Fingers of the Mountain, Part 2,” the sequel to your quest. Return to Earana after stealing the book, and she’ll instruct you to come back the next day for a reward. When you reunite, she’ll provide a passage from the book and tell you to visit Cloud Top to follow the new directions.

This passage suggests using a shock spell on the pillar at Cloud Top, although it’s vague as to what will happen. If you heed her advice and return to Cloud Top to cast a shock spell on the pillar, you’ll gain a leveled shock spell known as Finger of the Mountain, completing the quest. If you lack a shock spell and haven’t previously accessed Jauffre’s chest, check Weynon Priory for a shock scroll; I had no luck finding one in the Mages Guild or the local store.

What Happens If You Give the Book to Earana

The Chaotic Choice Won’t Ruin Any Plans

If you choose to give the book directly to Earana, you’ll trigger the same sequence regarding Cloud Top. Earana will leave to translate the book and return with the instructions to activate the pillar. Regardless of the order in which you hand over the book, you’ll still be able to get the Finger of the Mountain spell. For giving the book to Earana, you’ll earn one fame point.

After giving the book to Earana, you can chat with Teekeeus, who will also request that you steal the book back. This once again initiates “Fingers of the Mountain, Part 2,” but this time focusing on the other perspective. Now, you’ll need to steal it from Earana at The Grey Mare.

If you successfully steal the book back, Teekeeus will recommend you to the Arcane University, forgiving your earlier mistake in giving the book to Earana. However, you won’t earn any additional fame points, aside from the one gained for initially handing Fingers of the Mountain over to her.

You Should Give Fingers of the Mountain to Teekeeus

    A Marginal Advantage

Ultimately, there’s no benefit to giving Fingers of the Mountain to Earana first. Regardless of the route you choose, you can secure both Teekeeus’s recommendation and the instructions from Earana to unlock the Finger of the Mountain spell. By giving it to Teekeeus first, you’ll earn two fame points instead of just one, providing a minor but valuable advantage.

If you pay attention to where Teekeeus puts the book, it will be easier to steal it from him than from Earana, as you won’t need to break in.

That said, since both outcomes are quite similar, either choice doesn’t seriously impact the quest. If you’ve already given the book to Earana, reloading the game just for an extra fame point may not be worth it. Opting to hand the book to Teekeeus first generally proves to be the wiser choice. The key takeaway is to ensure you give Fingers of the Mountain to both Teekeeus and Earana to maximize your rewards in Oblivion Remastered.

  • Is Leveling Luck Worth It in Oblivion Remastered?

Is Leveling Luck Worth It in Oblivion Remastered?

Deciding which attributes to enhance in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to the Luck attribute. Unlike other attributes that have specific impacts—like Strength for melee attacks or Intelligence for magic—Luck is more general. Although the game states that Luck influences various skills, the lack of details makes it challenging to determine if it’s a wise investment.

Oblivion Remastered alters the skill leveling system, adding another layer of complexity even for seasoned players. Similar to Skyrim, all skills now contribute to level-ups and can be leveled at any time, making the system less restrictive. This flexibility can change how valuable investing in Luck may seem.

How Luck Works in Oblivion Remastered

    Smaller Boosts to Every Attribute

In Oblivion Remastered, Luck functions similarly to how it did in the original game. Its effect on other skills is determined by how far it is from a score of 50, and all races begin with a Luck score of 50. While other attributes need just one Virtue point to increase, Luck requires four, which balances out its broad impacts.

To gauge the effect of Luck on other stats, subtract 50 from your Luck score and calculate 40% of that number. For instance, if your Luck score is 70, you subtract 50 to get 20, then multiply that by 40%, resulting in an 8-point boost. This boost applies to all skills, except Acrobatics, Athletics, and Speechcraft, but this number won’t be displayed in-game.

If your Luck drops below 50, it will negatively affect your other stats, resulting in a negative multiplier.

Besides enhancing other stats, Luck can also influence various chance-based situations. It can improve outcomes in gambling, using repair hammers, and avoiding illnesses in Oblivion Remastered.

    Focus on Luck Early On

    Luck Becomes Less Useful Later

Luck can be advantageous in the early stages of Oblivion since you’re likely working to enhance your character’s overall abilities. You can only invest one set of four Virtue points into Luck per level up, so there’s minimal risk of overspending. However, if you’re aiming for optimal returns from your Virtues, leveling Luck is less efficient.

Other attributes affect three skills each, while Luck impacts 18. Though Luck seems appealing due to its wide influence, the high investment cost dilutes its effectiveness. After boosting Luck five times, for instance, you’d add 2 points to 18 different skills, costing you 20 Virtues—a return of only 36. In contrast, distributing those 20 Virtues among standard attributes would yield an effective return of 60 since each attribute enhances three skills. This ratio shows that Luck is only 60% as effective as focusing on other attributes.

If you’re committed to improving Luck, choosing a Thief class will give you an initial +10 bonus to that attribute.

Aside from its random benefits, an early investment in Luck helps amplify your preferred attributes while providing minor boosts across the board. Since you can only invest 5 Virtues into any other attribute at each level, raising Luck can complement your chosen attribute and all others. However, because Acrobatics and Athletics don’t benefit from Luck, this strategy might not be ideal if Luck is your main focus.

As you progress in Oblivion, the utility of investing in Luck begins to wane. The gradual increase in its percentage boost becomes less satisfying as your other stats rise, and Luck won’t impact attributes past their maximum cap of 100.

Ultimately, whether you decide to level up Luck or not won’t make or break your Oblivion experience, but it can be beneficial up to a certain point. The key is recognizing when to stop investing in Luck, as it becomes one of the least effective strategies as the game progresses.

  • Help or Report Glarthir in Paranoia: What’s Your Choice?

Help or Report Glarthir in Paranoia: What’s Your Choice?

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered showcases an array of quirky characters, but few stand out quite like Glarthir. Located in the city of Skingrad, Glarthir has a vivid imagination when it comes to conspiracies. This paranoia is fittingly captured in the title of the quest he offers — “Paranoia.” Despite his distorted worldview, there’s a chance that some of his fears might hold a grain of truth.

Assisting Glarthir involves trailing several townsfolk, as he suspects they are watching him during his day-to-day activities. While this task can be time-consuming, sticking to Glarthir’s instructions isn’t the only way to complete the quest. You can also report his odd behavior to the guard captain, Dion, which will steer the quest in a different direction. Alternatively, you could provoke Glarthir to end the quest prematurely and violently.

What Happens If You Help Glarthir In Paranoia

    Tailing Suspects For Three Days

If you decide to help Glarthir, you’ll need to meet him behind the church in Skingrad at midnight. This task is straightforward, as you can simply use the quest marker and adjust the time if needed. Here, he’ll request that you follow Bernadette Peneles, a neighbor he believes is keeping tabs on him. To fulfill his request, you would have to wait outside her house at 6 AM and follow her throughout the day. However, you can return to him at the next midnight without having followed her and report whatever you want in exchange for a reward of 150 gold.

After meeting Glarthir again at midnight, he’ll send you after Toutius Sextius, giving you another full day for surveillance. You’ll return to him once more to report whether Sextius is innocent, earning another reward of 150-200 gold. Finally, Glarthir will ask you to tail the winemaker, Davide Surilie, setting the stage for the climax of the quest.

    Reporting Suspects As Innocent

If you’ve indicated that both Bernadette and Toutius are innocent, describing Davide as innocent as well will lead Glarthir to believe you are part of the conspiracy. Upon making all three innocence claims, Glarthir will attack you, forcing you to kill him. You can loot his body, including his house key, but you won’t receive your final day’s pay. The following morning, residents of Skingrad will comment on Glarthir’s death, treating it as an unfortunate yet expected outcome for someone as peculiar as he is.

    Reporting Suspects As Guilty

You can also choose to mislead Glarthir about the guilt of any or all of the suspects, which significantly alters the outcome of assisting him. Even if they appear innocent, by labeling them guilty, the rewards for Toutius and Davide will increase to 200 gold each. You could even eliminate them yourself during your tasks; Glarthir might hesitate at their deaths but will continue to reward you. Declaring any character guilty should also prevent him from becoming hostile at the conclusion.

Be careful not to kill any of the suspects before Glarthir instructs you to follow them, as doing so will void the quest.

If you’ve already eliminated characters you’ve accused of guilt, you’ll receive 500 gold from him on the final day, completing the quest. If you’ve accused any suspects while leaving them alive, Glarthir will give you a list marking them for death after three days. Completing this task will garner you a total of 1,000 gold.

What Happens If You Report Glarthir

Getting Others To Do The Dirty Work

It quickly becomes apparent that Glarthir is not the hero in this scenario, so you have the opportunity to report him at any point after learning his intentions. However, if you want to avoid collateral damage to innocent people, it’s best to report him after agreeing to his requests rather than denying them. Refusing him can lead to a violent rampage, where he goes home, grabs an axe, and attempts to eliminate any suspects that remain.

If you report Glarthir prior to receiving his List of Death, no action will be taken against him, but it won’t cause any harm. To fully resolve the matter through reporting, you’ll need to tell Glarthir that at least one suspect is guilty, allowing you to obtain the List of Death after three days. With this list, you can inform a town guard or either of the Surilie brothers, leading to Glarthir’s demise without you needing to get your hands dirty.

You Should Report Glarthir In Oblivion Remastered

The Best Moral Choice Still Has Solid Rewards

If you’re adhering to a moral standard in Oblivion, it’s preferable to eliminate Glarthir rather than allow innocent people to die. Reporting him after obtaining the List of Death is a solid strategy. Claiming the suspects are guilty, acquiring the list, and subsequently reporting him will allow you to earn 550 gold and a point of fame. This path offers strong rewards while allowing you to maintain your integrity.

If you’d rather state that everyone is innocent rather than trick him into his own death, the confrontation with Glarthir is manageable, making it feasible to avoid involving the guards. Although you won’t receive as much gold this way, you can take his house key from his body and easily loot his house without the need for lock-picking.

Finally, if you’re unconcerned about the moral implications of the quest, killing characters on Glarthir’s behalf will yield the highest gold rewards. In a villainous playthrough or if wealth overrides moral choices, this is the optimal strategy. The only outcome to avoid is refusing Glarthir and setting off a rampage, as this will grant you the fewest benefits for any Oblivion Remastered playthrough.

  • Oblivion Remastered: Solving the Rat Problem Quest Guide

Oblivion Remastered: Solving the Rat Problem Quest Guide

    "A Rat Problem" Quest Overview

"A Rat Problem" is a quest you can undertake for the Fighters Guild in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, located in Anvil, once you become a member. This quest provides a fresh spin on a classic RPG theme, featuring a rat infestation in a local basement. To successfully complete it, you’ll need to engage with various characters and ensure an NPC’s beloved pets are safe.

At first glance, "A Rat Problem" might seem like a stereotypical starter quest—head to a location and eliminate a horde of oversized rats. However, similar to the original Oblivion, there’s more depth to this quest than it appears. For the best experience, it’s recommended to tackle this quest right after joining the Fighters Guild, as it’s straightforward and offers valuable rewards.

How To Start "A Rat Problem"

Upon joining the Fighters Guild, "A Rat Problem" becomes available as your first Contract quest. Speak with Azzan in Anvil to gather initial details about the quest. This rat-related mission has become a staple of the Elder Scrolls series, with the Fighters Guild traditionally including quests involving oversized rodents.

Upon talking to Azzan, you’ll learn about a woman in Anvil named Arvena Thelas, who seeks the Guild’s assistance. As Azzan explains, her “rat problem” is best discussed in person, so proceed to find Arvena Thelas in Anvil to uncover the full story about the rats in her basement.

Complete Walkthrough for "A Rat Problem"

Help Arvena Protect Her Pet Rats

Surprisingly, Arvena needs your assistance in protecting her many pet rats in the basement instead of exterminating them. She explains that something has been attacking them, likely another animal. In her panic, she urgently requests your help, so make your way through the wooden door to Arvena’s Basement.

Once inside, you’ll encounter a mountain lion poised to attack her pet rats. Use your weapons or magic to defeat the mountain lion and save her pets from becoming its next meal. Depending on your character’s abilities, this combat challenge might be tough, but focus on preserving as many rats as possible to ensure the quest can continue.

Tip: If your attacks accidentally eliminate all the rats in Arvena’s Basement, the quest can still be completed, but you won’t gain fame from the Fighters Guild, missing out on one of the primary rewards.

After you defeat the mountain lion, return to Arvena and report your findings. She informs you that the mountain lion likely accessed the basement through a hole in the wall. Worried about more mountain lions following, she suggests you speak with Pinarus Inventius, a hunter who may have more information.

    Where to Find Pinarus Inventius

Pinarus Inventius lives in Anvil, close to Arvena. When you speak with him about the mountain lions, he’ll propose a hunt outside the city, prompting you to follow him beyond the main gate. Accompany Pinarus on the hunt to gather additional information related to your quest.

Pinarus leads you to a clearing where you’ll face four hungry mountain lions, akin to the one you previously battled. Eliminate all the mountain lions in this hunt, and afterward, return to Arvena to inform her that the nearby mountain lion threat has been significantly reduced. To your surprise, Arvena reveals there’s still another mountain lion lurking in her basement, leading you to another confrontation.

When the last mountain lion is taken care of, speak with Arvena again to hear her thoughts. She suspects that a jealous Argonian woman named Quill-Weave is behind the mountain lion troubles, asking you to catch her in the act. You’ll need to track Quill-Weave but won’t have to break any locks to find the evidence required.

How to Find & Catch the Culprit

Quill-Weave tends to move around frequently, which makes following her for long enough a bit challenging. Wait until nightfall behind Arvena’s house, where Quill-Weave is expected to appear. Stay hidden while observing her approach a hole leading to Arvena’s Basement.

Note: Quill-Weave visits Chorrol once a month, so you may need to wait a few days for her to show up to obtain the necessary proof.

As long as you remain undetected, you’ll see Quill-Weave drop a piece of meat outside the basement. This is likely what has been drawing the mountain lions to Arvena’s property and serves as the crucial evidence. When you confront Quill-Weave, you’ll learn that she merely wanted to lure the rats out and didn’t intend for the mountain lions to show up.

Rewards for Completing "A Rat Problem"

Once you catch Quill-Weave, you’ll have different options for completing the quest:

    • Keep Quill-Weave’s secret.
    • Inform Arvena that Quill-Weave is responsible.

Your ensuing rewards will vary based on your choice, as each character provides a free skill level for siding with them. Quill-Weave grants a full level in Acrobatics, while Arvena offers one level in Speechcraft. Depending on your character’s strengths, either option can be advantageous, as a free skill level is a valuable asset.

Successfully completing this quest will also enhance your standing in the Fighters Guild, unlocking further Contracts. While "A Rat Problem" may not be the most challenging quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, it sets the stage for many more rewarding opportunities with the Guild.

  • Journey through Canvas: Castle Quest Guide

Journey through Canvas: Castle Quest Guide

Sure! Here’s a rewritten version of your content in American English, made unique and clear:

    "Canvas the Castle" Overview

"Canvas the Castle" is one of the intriguing quests you might come across early in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. While it’s engaging, it also poses quite a challenge. This quest shifts the focus from combat to investigation, tasking you with questioning suspects and uncovering clues. Identifying the culprit is straightforward, but securing a solid accusation requires gathering all necessary evidence, which can be tricky.

The main plot revolves around a stolen painting that Countess Arriana Valga believes has been taken by someone within her household. Your main suspects include an alcoholic named Orgnolf and a court mage named Chanel, but you’ll need to interrogate several other characters in the castle. If you approach this quest with a clear strategy, you can finish it relatively quickly; otherwise, it might take longer than expected.

Getting Started with "Canvas the Castle"

Finding Countess Arriana Valga in Chorrol

If you’re advancing through the main storyline, “Canvas the Castle” isn’t far off your path. After arriving at Weynon Priory to deliver the Amulet of Kings, you’ll find yourself near the city of Chorrol. Enter the city and head to the castle during the day, where you’ll meet Countess Arriana Valga in the throne room.

Once you speak to Valga, choose the Investigation option. She will explain the situation and request your assistance. Agree to help, and she’ll provide you with keys to open most doors in the castle, making your exploration much easier without dealing with the complexities of lock-picking.

Interrogating Suspects in "Canvas the Castle"

    Five Characters to Question

As part of your investigation in "Canvas the Castle," you’ll need to speak with five essential characters: Orgnolf, Chanel, Orok-Gro-Ghoth, Laythe Wavrick, and Bittneld The Curse-Bringer. Depending on what time of day it is, you can usually find them in specific locations. Some may already be in the throne room (most likely Laythe), but if they aren’t, you can explore the castle’s private quarters by going up the stairs and entering any of the three doors on the landing. If the suspects are asleep, simply start a conversation to wake them.

While Orgnolf and Chanel will remain in the castle, Bittneld and Orok may come and go. You can often find Bittneld in the castle barracks, but he might also be out and about in town. If Orok isn’t in his quarters, check the Northern Goods and Trade.

Most castle inhabitants may not be forthcoming with information, so you’ll need to engage in the Persuade mechanic available in the dialogue options. With a bit of practice, you should be able to raise their willingness to share information to 50 or higher, allowing you to gather useful insights.

Finding Clues in "Canvas the Castle"

    Three Locations to Explore

Locating the clues can be somewhat challenging, especially since the graphical updates in Oblivion Remastered have made one clue a bit harder to spot. Through your discussions with suspects, the West Tower and the dining hall to the right of the courtyard will emerge as important locations worth checking. You should also visit Chanel’s room.

    • The West Tower: You can enter via the Arch Tower outside or a door in the living quarters. Inside, look for a trapdoor hidden behind some crates. Climb down to find an artist’s setup and interact with the painting to get a clue.

    • Chanel’s Room: Open her lectern in her room to uncover another clue.

    • Dining Hall: This clue is the trickiest. The center rug has paint stains that might blend in with the busy pattern, so interact with the stains to find the last clue.

Feel free to explore in a different order if that suits you. However, ensure you complete the full sweep of suspects and clues before making an accusation. While you might have the option to accuse someone prematurely, lacking sufficient evidence can lead to a failed accusation, limiting your rewards.

Who to Accuse in "Canvas the Castle"

    Avoiding False Accusations

After gathering information and clues, it becomes clear that Chanel has a secret passion for painting. Go ahead and confront Chanel and choose to accuse her. You may need to persuade her again, as achieving a full confession requires a Persuade score of 70 or higher. Once you’ve managed to get her to confess, you can return to the countess for your reward.

When you present your findings, you can either reveal the truth about Chanel or shield her from blame. If you decide to point her out, the Countess will reward you with gems and a monetary bounty based on your level, along with a fame point. If you accuse Orgnolf before Chanel, you’ll receive far less. Although Chanel will lose her position and be banished from the castle, her fate won’t be harsher.

Alternatively, if you protect Chanel by claiming that both she and Orgnolf are innocent, you’ll receive a small amount of gold. However, Chanel will later give you a painting that you can sell for 500 gold. If you’re fine with bypassing the fame point and don’t need immediate money, this could be a viable choice. Ultimately, telling the truth about Chanel is the more logical route, though if your instincts lead you elsewhere, you won’t lose out too much in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

Let me know if you need any further adjustments!

  • Getting Started with The Shivering Isles DLC in Oblivion Remastered

Getting Started with The Shivering Isles DLC in Oblivion Remastered

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has officially launched, and it brings back both of the original game’s story expansions: Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles. Though both expansions are noteworthy, I find myself leaning towards The Shivering Isles. This adventure takes you into the realm of Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness, where you need to confront the looming Greymarch to save the Isles from a tyrannical order. It’s bizarre, whimsical, chaotic, and incredibly enjoyable. While it may not be essential to the core Oblivion experience, I highly recommend that you don’t overlook it.

That said, the remastered version of Oblivion doesn’t do a great job of prompting you to play The Shivering Isles, especially during the initial phases of the game. Here’s a guide to help you kick off The Shivering Isles and what to anticipate from one of Oblivion‘s most exciting expansions.

Where to Locate The Shivering Isles

    Location of Niben Bay Entrance

To begin The Shivering Isles, you’ll need to head toward the location indicated on the map above—it’s a small island situated in the heart of Niben Bay, closest to Bravil and southeast of the Imperial City.

The quickest way to reach The Shivering Isles is to fast travel to the Bay Roan Stables, which is located just north of Bravil. Since you can fast travel to major locations, like cities, without actually discovering them on the Oblivion map, I suggest you do this as soon as you’re ready to dive into the DLC. Head east from the stables until you hit water, and you should spot a small island topped with a giant, two-faced statue. Swim over to it; there’s a ramp on the side that you’ll want to approach.

How to Start The Shivering Isles

    Entering the Portal

Contrary to what some people believe, there are no specific level or time requirements to access The Shivering Isles DLC. You can start this part of the game right after you complete the tutorial. Occasionally, Oblivion will prompt you with a quest notification to check out the peculiar door in Niben Bay after 24 in-game hours have elapsed. However, even if this doesn’t happen, you can initiate the quest by simply swimming up to the island—this is what I did during my latest playthrough.

Once you reach the island, pay attention to two things: the head statue seems to function as a portal, and there’s a guard stationed in front of it. Speak to the guard, and he’ll warn you about the door. Shortly after, a dark elf NPC will emerge, ranting angrily until he becomes aggressive. You can either assist the guard in dealing with him or wait until he’s defeated, then talk to the guard again and express your intention to enter.

As you converse, you’ll hear a voice on the other side of the door monologuing about the dark elf’s unworthiness and seeking a new champion. Let him finish; you won’t be able to enter the portal until he concludes his lines. When he says, “Really, do come in. It’s lovely in the Isles right now. Perfect time for a visit,” you’ll find that you can interact with the portal and step through it like any other door.

Once inside, have a seat and chat with Haskill until you agree to enter when prompted. Then, the walls will dissolve, revealing The Fringe, which is the first area of The Shivering Isles.

You can return to Cyrodiil from the Shivering Isles at any time by fast traveling to the Gates of Madness (located at the northwest corner of The Fringe) and stepping back through to Niben Bay.

And just like that, you’ll find yourself in the Shivering Isles. Take your time to investigate, explore, and interact just like in any other part of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered—this DLC is packed with fantastic side quests and hidden gems, making it well worth your time.

  • Understanding the Persuade Mini-Game in Oblivion Remastered

Understanding the Persuade Mini-Game in Oblivion Remastered

It’s an often overlooked detail that you can significantly enhance the way every NPC perceives you in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered through a straightforward mini-game. Nowadays, Oblivion is frequently noted for its surprisingly quirky NPC AI. From conversations that seem to end as strangely as they begin, to awkward pathfinding that leads to NPCs clustering together at street corners, and the sometimes awkward and poorly executed voice lines, it has become a comedic reference in the realm of modern gaming, which generally handles these aspects more smoothly.

However, the game’s social mechanics are actually quite intricate. This includes a friendship meter that resembles something from The Sims, influencing how non-hostile NPCs in Oblivion view you. By skillfully persuading both strangers and allies, you can gain access to better shop prices, more accurate information from gossipers, and crucial tips to initiate certain quests. However, if it’s your first time dealing with the persuasion mini-game, it can be a bit tricky to navigate.

    Getting Started with Persuasion

When you engage in dialogue with a friendly NPC, you’ll notice different options displayed in the lower-left corner of your screen. Below the dialogue choices, there will be one to four square icons. Look for the one that appears as a human figure surrounded by arrows. Hover over it and click to initiate the persuasion mini-game.

Once you do that, you’ll see a sort of introduction screen with a semi-transparent wheel displaying options like "bribe" and "start." The number in the center of the wheel indicates your current standing with the NPC—higher numbers mean they have a better opinion of you. A score above 70 generally indicates a favorable stance. If you’re able to, I recommend bribing the NPC at least once to easily boost your standing. Click "start" to kick off the mini-game, but be aware that the NPC’s opinion of you will decrease the longer the mini-game remains open, so make your moves quickly.

    Understanding the Persuasion Wheel

With the persuasion wheel now active, you’ll find four choices: Admire, Joke, Coerce, and Boast. These represent potential dialogue options. As you hover over each one, the NPC’s facial expressions will shift, conveying their reactions ranging from pleasure to disgust, indicating their feelings toward each option. Each section of the wheel contains one to four segments, showing the effectiveness of each option. For instance, if an NPC like Jensine is most receptive to Coerce, somewhat receptive to Boast, and poorly disposed to Joke and Admire, it’s a strategy to aim for Coerce while avoiding Admire when possible.

Once you’ve played through the persuasion mini-game with an NPC for the first time, you’ll notice their wheel is colored to show their preferences: blue-green indicates they truly like it, light green means they like it a bit, ruddy brown indicates dislike, and red signals outright hatred.

Whenever you pick a dialogue option, the sections of the wheel will rotate a quarter turn to the right. You’ll have to use all four before wrapping up the persuasion mini-game. Your objective here is to select the options the NPC prefers at the times when they are most effective, ideally when they have the most segments filled, while opting for the less favorable options only when they’re less effective, such as when they have just one segment filled.

    Advantages of Persuading NPCs

Successfully increasing your affinity with an NPC can lead to various rewards. Most importantly, it enables you to negotiate better prices with merchants. During your interactions, pressing R opens a haggling panel, allowing you to adjust a meter to affect pricing. With a higher affinity, merchants are more inclined to lower their prices for items while offering you a better rate for what you’re selling.

Furthermore, certain NPCs may provide enhanced or additional information regarding your quests and side missions once you’ve bolstered your affinity with them. For instance, to join the Thieves Guild, you’ll need to win over one of the beggars in the Imperial City to disclose the existence of their elusive leader, the Grey Fox.
