How to Hack Netflix: 6 New Ways to Find Awesome Shows

Here’s a fresh, human-like rewrite of your content, ensuring it’s original and free from plagiarism:

Navigating Netflix’s Vast Screen Library: Tips for Finding Your Perfect Watch

Netflix boasts an enormous collection of films and TV shows, but choosing the right one for your evening can sometimes feel overwhelming. Its user interface often offers repetitive suggestions, leading many to believe they only have access to a handful of options. However, with the right approach, you can tap into Netflix’s full potential by customizing your browsing experience, honing in on specific genres, years, and niches, and even improving Netflix’s recommendations to suit your tastes. Plus, you can effortlessly save your favorites for later viewing, ensuring your next binge session is just a click away.

    Discovering Content by Genre

Ever find yourself aimlessly scrolling through categories like “Reality TV,” “Drama,” “Thrillers,” or “Suspenseful Movies”? Instead of passively browsing, try this method:

On the web version of Netflix, select “TV Shows” or “Movies” at the top of the homepage. A dropdown menu labeled “Genres” will appear. For mobile users, such as those on iOS, tap “Categories” directly on the main screen.

This will reveal roughly 20 genre options, from action-packed flicks and documentaries to anime and stand-up comedy. Clicking on a genre narrows your search, making it easier to find something suited to your mood.

    Diving Deeper into Niche Categories

While the genre menu is useful, it’s often too broad—for example, wanting a specific type like a spy thriller, a Western, a classic musical, or a sports drama? Here’s a trick:

Visit Netflix-Codes.com, a website that hosts a variety of special codes for more specific categories. You simply add these codes to the Netflix URL to instantly access tailored collections such as “Comic Book & Superhero Movies,” “Film Noir,” or even “Food & Travel Shows.” It’s a treasure trove for discovering hidden gems and specialized content.

    Filtering Content by Release Year

Most new releases on Netflix are from the last five years, but if you’re craving older classics from the 1990s or earlier, you’ll need to dig a little deeper.

On desktop, you can filter by year by clicking “TV Shows” or “Movies,” then selecting the grid icon in the top right corner, followed by “Year Released” from the dropdown. However, this feature isn’t available for all devices, and sorting options are limited—reversing the order isn’t possible directly in Netflix.

For more precise filtering, third-party services like Reelgood, JustWatch, or Trakt come to the rescue. Reelgood, for example, provides a slider to specify the release year, along with ratings filters, allowing for a more tailored browsing experience.

    Improving Recommendations with Ratings

Netflix’s suggestion engine can sometimes miss the mark, but you have the power to steer it. By rating videos—either with a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or even “two thumbs up”—you help Netflix better understand your preferences.

Don’t hesitate to rate content even if you haven’t watched it fully; marking genres or titles you dislike will refine future recommendations. To review or modify existing ratings, head to your account settings, choose your profile, then visit “Viewing Activity” and the “Ratings” tab. Here, you can alter or delete old ratings to fine-tune your feed.

Finding Similar Content and Recommended Picks

One of the most straightforward ways to discover movies or shows you’ll enjoy is through Netflix’s “More Like This” feature. However, this isn’t consistently available across all platforms. For example, the Apple TV app often lacks this feature altogether.

For those platforms, simply visit the desktop site, hover over a title, click the downward arrow, and select “More Like This” to get personalized suggestions based on your viewing history. This feature is invaluable for exploring related content and stretching your favorites.

    Rediscovering and Managing Your Watchlist

Many long-time Netflix users fondly remember the “queue”—a curated list of movies and shows they wanted to watch. Over time, Netflix rebranded it as “My List,” but the feature has become less prominent and less functional.

On desktop, you can add titles to your list, but rearranging or managing it is limited. The mobile apps offer some filtering options like “Unwatched” and sorting by date added, but overall, the experience isn’t as flexible as it once was.

For full control, consider using third-party tools like Reelgood, JustWatch, or Trakt. These services not only sync with Netflix but allow you to organize, rank, and prioritize your viewing list more effectively—offering a smarter way to keep track of what’s next.

  • How to Get Alexa to Stop Talking: 5 Simple Ways

How to Get Alexa to Stop Talking: 5 Simple Ways

Have you ever noticed how Alexa occasionally adds unsolicited comments after fulfilling your requests? You know, that familiar “By the way” that follows a simple command?

While Alexa means well with these extra remarks, it can sometimes interrupt with uninvited announcements or linger longer than necessary with random comments.

Fortunately, there are several methods to tone down Alexa’s chatter. In some instances, a few tweaks in the Alexa app will suffice; in others, a bit of clever maneuvering may be required.

Fear not, as we’ll walk you through the process, paving the way for a more tranquil environment.

Note: The following suggestions pertain to the traditional version of Alexa, not its newly released AI-enhanced counterpart. Although Alexa+ is gradually being launched to select users, most remain on the older version.

    Disable Weather Notifications

Staying updated on severe weather is crucial, especially in the face of natural disasters like storms and floods.

However, alerts about rip currents and gusty winds can feel excessive, especially since you may already receive similar updates through your smartphone, home security setup, or various apps.

Here’s how you can customize or turn off Alexa’s weather notifications:

    1. Launch the Alexa app, tap More, Settings, Notifications, and scroll to Weather.
    2. Select Severe Weather Alerts and adjust the options. You can decide if you want Alexa to repeat alerts or notify you just once, as well as whether you prefer mobile push notifications.
    3. Choose how you’d like to receive these notifications: either through spoken alerts by Alexa or regular notifications on your devices.

If you’re concerned about package theft, getting an immediate alert when an Amazon delivery arrives is essential.

However, you might not want to hear every single detail about your Amazon orders, such as when items are on the way, whether returns were processed, or the status of subscription items.

To limit Alexa’s updates on your Amazon purchases, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Alexa app, tap More, Settings, Notifications, and then Amazon Shopping.
    2. Review the options and disable the notifications that annoy you. You can silence updates about orders in transit or delivered, or those concerning returns.
    3. You can also turn off notifications for “Subscribe & Save” orders or promotional recommendations.

Disable “Always Follow Up” Mode for Reminders

Alexa has a knack for being persistent with reminders, often buzzing you multiple times until tasks are marked complete.

While you may appreciate that level of diligence for certain activities, endless reminders can be quite bothersome. If you’re finding Alexa’s follow-up notifications overwhelming, try this adjustment.

    1. Tap More, Settings, Reminders.
    2. Scroll to the Always Follow Up setting and turn it off to prevent repeated reminders about incomplete tasks.
    3. While you’re there, you can also limit how many times Alexa announces a reminder (options range from one to three reminders).

    Activate Brief Mode

Alexa can be a bit talkative during routine interactions, especially when responding to your commands.

If you prefer a more straightforward interaction without the extra commentary, activating Brief Mode may be the solution you’re after.

    1. Go to More, Settings, Voice Responses.
    2. Enable Brief Mode.

With this setting, Alexa should respond to your requests with minimal chatter, mainly communicating through beeps.

    Suppress “By the Way” Comments

While Brief Mode helps reduce verbosity, don’t expect it to eliminate those “by the way” remarks entirely.

Even with Brief Mode activated, you might still encounter unwanted asides from Alexa. Unfortunately, there’s no official setting to eliminate these completely, but a user-discovered hack might help.

By telling Alexa to “stop By the Way,” you can temporarily prevent further interruptions. However, this solution is short-lived.

This feature is part of TechHive’s extensive coverage on the best smart speakers.

A more lasting fix involves creating a daily routine that prompts Alexa to issue the “stop By the Way” command. Here’s how:

    1. Tap More, Routines, then click the “+” at the top-right corner.
    2. Name the routine (for example, “Stop by the way”), and set a trigger for it (like a specific time every day using Schedule, At Time).
    3. Add the action by tapping Custom and then typing in “stop by the way.”

With this setup, Alexa will remind herself daily to skip the “by the way” remarks, bringing you closer to a quieter experience.

  • How to Adjust These 8 Settings Before Streaming on Roku

How to Adjust These 8 Settings Before Streaming on Roku

Roku streaming sticks are celebrated for their user-friendly design. Simply plug the device into your TV’s HDMI port, connect the USB power source, and dive into your favorite shows. However, even though Roku offers a plug-and-play experience, a few adjustments can significantly enhance your streaming quality and reduce buffering.

For instance, you may notice video playback lagging without enabling a specific setting, while sound issues could arise unless particular options are configured correctly. Additionally, you have the flexibility to customize the look of your home screen and prevent intrusive “sponsored” screensavers from appearing.

Read on to discover the eight essential Roku settings to tweak, starting with…

    Toggle the Recommendation Row

Upon booting up your Roku, the home screen displays a row of suggestions labeled “Top Picks For You,” situated just above your apps grid. This section showcases streaming titles that Roku believes you’ll enjoy, some based on your installed apps and others from outside those sources.

If you find this row helpful while browsing, you might want to keep it. However, if it feels more like clutter, you have the option to hide it.

Simply navigate to Settings > Home Screen > Recommendation Rows and select Hide.

    Resize Home Screen Tiles

Now that you’ve addressed the recommendation row, let’s focus on the main apps grid. Not only can you rearrange your applications, but you can also adjust the size of the tiles.

Choosing larger tiles offers improved visibility, but limits you to three rows on your screen. Conversely, if you opt for smaller tiles, readability may decrease, yet you’ll gain an extra row for apps.

To adjust tile size, go to Settings > Home Screen > Tile Size, then select either Smaller or Larger.

Roku provides a variety of wallpapers to enhance your browsing experience, including occasional promotions for shows, films, or brands.

If you wish to keep your Roku home screen free of advertising-themed wallpapers, there’s a way to disable them.

Just head over to Settings > Theme > Sponsored Wallpapers and select Off.

    Disable Personalized Ads

Roku devices are cost-effective largely because the company gathers and sells user viewing habits to advertisers. This practice is common among companies like Amazon and Google. While your data is anonymized, some privacy is sacrificed for the sake of affordability.

To enhance your privacy, you can configure your Roku device to use a non-persistent device ID, which makes it harder for advertisers to track your viewing habits. Keep in mind that while you might see the same amount of ads, they won’t be as closely aligned with your preferences.

To turn off personalized ads, go to Settings > Advertising and uncheck the Personalize Ads option.

    Disable Auto-Playing Videos

As you navigate through Roku, you might encounter video ads that start playing automatically. These can be intrusive and consume your bandwidth faster than expected.

Fortunately, you can easily stop auto-playing videos from distracting you. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Auto-play Video, and select Off.

    Auto-Adjust Display Refresh Rate

If you’ve noticed your streaming image is jittery, it could be due to a mismatch between the source content’s frame rate and the rate your Roku is sending to your TV.

The solution? Enable your Roku to automatically detect and adjust to the frame rate of the content you’re watching.

Simply navigate to Advanced Display Settings > Auto-adjust Display Refresh Rate and ensure it’s set to On.

    Automatically Set Display Type

You want your Roku device to send the highest quality possible to your 4K TV, but without overloading screens that can only handle basic HDR. Instead of manually checking the technical specs of your TV or HDMI connection, let your Roku do this automatically.

Visit Settings > Display Type and ensure it’s set to Automatic.

    Double-Check Your Audio Settings

Just as video might stutter, audio can also go awry during streaming. If the audio output isn’t compatible with your TV’s audio decoders, such as Dolby Digital or DTS, you could end up hearing distortions that are less than pleasant.

This feature is part of TechHive’s extensive coverage on the best streaming media devices.

How to Stop Your Roku Player From Speaking

Has your Roku device started narrating every menu or settings option? Don’t worry; there’s a straightforward reason behind this unexpected chatter and an easy fix to silence it.

The cause of your talkative Roku is the “Screen Reader,” an accessibility feature designed for users with visual impairments. Once activated, the screen reader—previously called the Audio Guide—reads out text and descriptions displayed on the screen, including information about your various streaming applications.

This feature is vital for users with sight challenges, but you may find it quite bothersome if enabled by mistake.

Fortunately, turning off the Roku screen reader is simple. Here are a couple of methods to do so.

    Repeat the Option Button Press

Here’s the scoop: If you tap the Option button (marked with an asterisk) on your Roku remote four consecutive times, you’ll activate the screen reader.

You’ll see a pop-up message that says “Screen reader enabled” when the feature is turned on. So, if you’re not paying full attention, you might be startled when your Roku begins to speak!

    Ben Patterson/Foundry

To turn off the screen reader, simply repeat the process—just press the Option button four times once again.

    Adjust Accessibility Settings

If you prefer a different approach, you can disable the screen reader by accessing the Accessibility menu on your Roku.

    Ben Patterson/Foundry

This guide is part of TechHive’s comprehensive look at the top media-streaming devices.

From the main menu, navigate to Settings, then select Accessibility > Screen Reader. Choose the “Off” option, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

  • How to Watch Roku Channel Free Without a Roku Device

How to Watch Roku Channel Free Without a Roku Device

Roku has gained popularity for its streaming devices, but it also provides a wealth of free entertainment through the Roku Channel. This includes live TV and original films, and you don’t necessarily need Roku hardware or a Roku TV to access it. Here, we’ll explore all the ways you can enjoy what’s available.

The Roku Channel can be accessed through any web browser or by using Roku’s mobile applications for both Android and iOS. If you want to view it on a smart TV or other streaming devices like Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, or Samsung smart TVs, you’ll need to download the Roku Channel app from the respective device’s app store.

Unfortunately, there is currently no app for LG smart TVs or the Apple TV streamer. However, we’ll provide some alternative options for those platforms shortly.

Watching the Roku Channel doesn’t require any specific hardware. Just visit theRokuChannel.com and start streaming.

What Can You Watch on the Roku Channel?

The Roku Channel boasts a diverse selection of Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) channels, along with movies and series available on demand. You can also enjoy live linear TV, which streams shows and movies on a set schedule, allowing you to tune in whenever you like.

While you may find some of the same content on platforms like Pluto or Tubi, Roku stands out with exclusive films and shows. One of its most notable originals to date is the Emmy-winning Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, featuring Daniel Radcliffe as the iconic satirical musician.

Roku features original programming, including Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

    Jared Newman / Foundry

Other original titles include The Great American Baking Show, Honest Renovations, and Visionaries: The Arch Project, hosted by Keanu Reeves. While the catalog may be modest compared to platforms like Max or Netflix, all these shows are free—with ads.

Additionally, Roku has acquired various projects that other streaming services have abandoned, such as the entire library of Quibi, which focused on short-form videos.

From the Quibi collection, you can enjoy shows like Die Hart starring Kevin Hart, Most Dangerous Game, a Punk’d revival with Chance the Rapper, the revival of Reno 911!, and Bill Burr Presents Immoral Compass. Roku has also secured the rights to The Spiderwick Chronicles series from Disney+.

    Quibi user interface

Roku has made the entire Quibi library accessible for free on the Roku Channel.

    Quibi

The Roku Channel serves as a hub for various streaming services, encouraging users to subscribe to platforms like Prime Video, Peacock, MGM+, or Paramount+. If unfamiliar with their offerings, you might be redirected to their respective apps or websites when selecting certain titles.

If you want to subscribe, it’s advisable to do so directly through those services to maintain control over your account.

How to Watch the Roku Channel in Your Browser

Start by visiting therokuchannel.com. You’ll find a large grid showcasing available movies and TV shows. While most content is free and ad-supported, a portion does require a subscription, but it’s clearly marked within the Roku Channel interface. The layout resembles that of Netflix, with sliding tiles for easy navigation.

    Roku Channel iOS app

When accessing the Roku Channel in a web browser on an iPhone, make sure to scroll down to see all available options.

    Michael Brown/Foundry

Unfortunately, you can’t customize the view to hide the premium content options. This is part of Roku’s business strategy, as they earn commissions from subscriptions made through their platform. However, it would be nice to have an option to filter out content you don’t intend to use.

A browsing tab allows you to explore various categories like Roku Originals, Movies, Series, Comedy, Drama, Westerns, and more. You can also easily save shows for later viewing by clicking the + button next to a program’s description.

The Live TV section displays current streams, also organized in the sliding tile format, which may feel unconventional for users accustomed to traditional cable grids.

How to Use the Roku Channel Mobile App

The Roku Channel is integrated into the Roku app, available for both iOS and Android. This app primarily functions as a remote control for Roku devices, so you may need to navigate around that feature if your main interest is just watching content.

Roku Channel streaming via Apple AirPlay

You can’t download the Roku Channel app for Apple TV, but you can stream it from your phone to your TV via Apple AirPlay.

    Michael Brown/Foundry

For instance, I use an Apple TV with a TCL television that includes the Roku interface. I generally avoid using the Roku interface on the TV. Press the wrong button, and it automatically launches. Unfortunately, there’s no way to hide or remove icons for installed apps on Roku devices.

The mobile app uses a similar sliding tile interface as the web version, but navigating it can be challenging on smaller screens. Live streaming options aren’t easily accessible, and locating Roku Originals can be tedious.

If you have an Apple TV, you can mirror the Roku Channel to your TV, but this does not support AirPlay, limiting what you can access to just the video content.

What’s the Best Way to Watch the Roku Channel?

If you have a Google, Amazon Fire, or Roku streaming device or television, the simplest way to watch is by downloading the Roku Channel app for your device, as this allows for easy navigation with a remote. If you do not own a compatible streaming device, your best option is to view the Roku Channel on a web browser using a computer or tablet.

When using a mobile device, logging in via a web browser to establish a Save List will let you quickly access your chosen content in the mobile app.

With free streaming becoming a key player in home entertainment, there’s a vast range of classic and relatively new films and shows available on the Roku Channel and other FAST platforms—if you’re okay with watching a few ads along the way.

Access Free Apple TV+ with T-Mobile

T-Mobile members have a special treat! Depending on your plan, you can enjoy six or even more months of complimentary Apple TV+.

To snag six months for free, you need one of T-Mobile’s Go5G or Sprint ONE plans. If you’re on Sprint MAX, you can score a full year of free service. Plus, customers on plans like Go5GPlus, Magenta MAX, and others enjoy Apple TV+ as a continuous benefit.

To activate this offer, log in to your T-Mobile account and claim your Apple TV+ benefit.

Get Free Apple TV+ from Comcast

If you’re an Xfinity Internet customer, you can also get Apple TV+ for free—or at least at a significantly reduced price.

By opting for Comcast’s StreamSaver option, you can access Peacock with ads, Netflix Basic with ads, and Apple TV+ all for just $15 monthly. This effectively makes Apple TV+ complimentary given the standard combined price for those services is roughly $25.97.

Alternatively, Comcast’s NOW StreamSaver plan provides more than 125 streaming channels plus Peacock with ads, Netflix Basic with ads, and Apple TV+ for $30 a month, offering substantial savings.

  • How to Move and Delete Apps on Your Roku Home Screen

How to Move and Delete Apps on Your Roku Home Screen

As a newcomer to Roku, one of my first moves was to populate my Home screen with various streaming apps—everything from Netflix and Disney+ to Apple TV+ and HBO Max (when it still went by that name).

However, after successfully installing all my favorite apps, I encountered a challenge: how could I rearrange this lively array of app tiles? Personally, I prefer having Netflix at the forefront, alongside other frequently used services like Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video. Yet, they ended up scattered throughout the middle of my app grid.

Additionally, there were some apps I was eager to remove, including People TV and Roku’s Getting Started channel.

For first-time Roku users, it can be a bit confusing to figure out how to move or eliminate apps on the Home screen, especially since there isn’t a straightforward way to shift your tiles around.

Fortunately, seasoned Roku users are in the know about a handy little feature: the “*” button, also known as the Options button. Pressing it brings up a variety of contextual options that can make your life a whole lot easier. Once you get the hang of using this button, rearranging apps on your Home screen becomes a breeze.

How to Move and Remove Apps from the Roku Home Screen

First, we’ll tackle how to rearrange apps on the Roku Home screen, followed by instructions on how to remove them.

Rearranging Apps on the Roku Home Screen

Start by heading to the Home tab on your Roku interface. After that, hit the “>” button on your remote and navigate to the app tile you want to move.

Once you’ve highlighted the app, press the “*” button. A menu will appear, offering you a range of options, including checking for updates or removing the app (which we’ll cover shortly).

Look for the option that says “Move app,” or “Move app to top” if you’d like to send it to the top of your screen. Select the appropriate option based on where you want the app to land.

You’ll then see the app tiles again, but this time the one you’ve chosen will be highlighted with arrows around it.

    Move Roku app

Using the remote’s arrow keys, shift the app tile to your desired spot. Once it’s in your ideal position, hit the OK button. You’re all done!

How to Delete Apps from the Roku Home Screen

If you’re looking to get rid of an app tile, the process is straightforward. However, remember that removing an app from your Roku Home screen does not automatically cancel your subscription to that service.

It’s important to confirm your subscription status for the app you’re looking to delete. Depending on how you signed up, you might have subscribed directly or through Roku itself. Failing to check might lead to unexpected charges on your next credit card statement.

To find out whether your subscription is linked to Roku, log in to my.roku.com and select Manage Your Subscriptions. If the channel you want to remove appears there, make sure to unsubscribe if you no longer wish to keep it.

If the service is *not* listed, this could mean you subscribed directly, via a third-party service, or that the app doesn’t offer a subscription.

    Delete Roku app

After you’ve verified your subscription situation, deleting a channel on Roku follows the same principle as rearranging an app. Just navigate to the app you wish to remove, press the “*” (Options) button, and select “Remove app.”

  • How to Stream Major League Baseball Games: A Guide

How to Stream Major League Baseball Games: A Guide

For baseball enthusiasts, the options for streaming Major League Baseball (MLB) games have vastly expanded, making it tricky to know where to catch the action. National broadcasts are split among various networks and streaming platforms, while local games increasingly shift from traditional regional sports networks. To complicate matters, exclusive streaming agreements and blackout rules can make it feel like navigating the world of Tarik Skubal’s pitching repertoire.

The 2025 MLB season kicks off with the Tokyo Series on March 18 and 19, where the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Chicago Cubs at the Tokyo Dome. Following this international event, the remaining teams will celebrate Opening Day on March 27.

Major networks including Fox, ESPN, TBS, and Apple TV+ will continue to provide coverage, with ESPN scheduled to feature a doubleheader on Opening Day and TBS sticking to its Tuesday night games. The Roku Channel now holds the rights to MLB Sunday Leadoff, while Apple TV+ keeps delivering Friday Night Baseball. Additionally, MLB.tv is the premier choice for out-of-market games, as local media rights are evolving with MLB taking control of broadcasts for teams like the San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Cleveland Guardians.

When it comes to postseason play, the lineup will remain familiar, with ESPN networks hosting the Wild Card Series, TBS managing the National League playoffs, and Fox broadcasting the American League playoffs alongside the World Series. As ESPN’s MLB contract concludes in 2025, this season might represent a pivotal shift in the broadcasting landscape for baseball.

To simplify the process, we’ve outlined the best ways to watch Major League Baseball in 2025.

This information has been updated for the 2025 season.

    Over-the-Air Options

Though most baseball broadcasts have embraced digital formats, there are still ways to engage with the game without a subscription. You can catch some nationally aired Saturday afternoon games for free through the Fox network, provided you have a good TV antenna.

If you’re considering purchasing an antenna, be sure to check what stations you can receive in your area to determine the type of antenna needed to capture your local Fox affiliate. Check out our suggestions for the top TV antennas.

    Apple TV+’s Friday Night Baseball

One of the cheaper avenues to access MLB content is by subscribing to Apple TV+, which costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually. This service also offers a range of other streaming options, including popular series like Masters of the Air and Severance.

While Apple TV+ might attract fans eager to watch every game, it offers diverse streaming entertainment at a low monthly cost. Additionally, T-Mobile customers on a Go5G Next plan can currently access both Apple TV+ and MLB.TV for free.

MLB Sunday Leadoff on The Roku Channel

If you’re searching for more free live baseball, The Roku Channel presents MLB Sunday Leadoff, which streams one exclusive Sunday afternoon game each week from May through August. You can watch these games without a subscription on The Roku Channel app, available on Roku devices, web browsers, smart TVs, and mobile devices.

    DirecTV Stream

If you’ve secured Fox local broadcasts with an antenna, DirecTV’s MySports package is an excellent option to catch the remainder of MLB games. The MySports package launched earlier this year, offering a comprehensive range of sports channels including ESPN, FS1, TBS, MLB Network, as well as regional networks like Bally Sports and NBC Sports regional channels. The package is priced at $69.99 per month, providing access to both national and local MLB games without hefty cable bundles.

    Fubo

Originally focused on soccer, this streaming service now provides a wealth of baseball-broadcasting channels, such as ESPN, Fox, FS1, and the MLB Network. It also carries several regional sports networks, including NBC Sports Bay Area and Marquee Sports Network. To access all channels, you’ll need the Pro package for $84.99 per month (they offer a 7-day free trial for new customers), plus an additional $10.99 a month for the Sports Plus channel.

    Hulu + Live TV

Hulu offers a straightforward package that combines more than 90 channels, including ESPN, Fox, FS1, and TBS, alongside regional sports networks in select regions. Subscribers get access to Hulu’s original programming as well as its extensive streaming library, for $82.99 monthly with ads or $95.99 without ads.

    Sling TV

Sling TV provides access to ESPN, ESPN2, TBS, Fox, FS1, and local NBC Sports channels for team broadcasts. However, to access all these in one package, you’ll need to opt for the top-tier Sling Orange + Blue option for $65.99 per month, which comes with a 50% discount for the first month.

    YouTube TV

YouTube TV, similar to Hulu, offers over 100 channels for $82.99 monthly ($69.99 per month for the first six months). The channel lineup includes Fox, FS1, ESPN, and TBS, though it does not feature the MLB Network.

    MLB.TV

The league’s official streaming service offers live broadcasts of every regular season out-of-market game, as well as features like multi-game viewing, in-game highlights, and a free subscription to the At Bat Premium app.

Keep in mind that MLB.TV is particularly beneficial for fans living outside their home region, allowing them to follow their favorite teams from afar. However, local games remain subject to blackout restrictions, preventing fans from watching their hometown teams live through this service.

In conclusion, MLB.TV is an invaluable resource for dedicated fans keen on accessing a wide range of out-of-market games throughout the regular season. If you can resist social media exposure and don’t mind delays, you can also catch replays of local team matches on demand 90 minutes after they conclude.

A full MLB.TV subscription is priced at $29.99 per month or $149.99 annually, with a single-team option available for $129.99 per year. Additionally, many T-Mobile subscribers can enjoy MLB.TV for free.

    Let’s Play Ball!

While we hope to see more free streaming offerings for significant matchups, fans can utilize the aforementioned cable alternatives and our guide to second-screen baseball apps to stay fully engaged with the action on the field.

  • How to Change Roku Shortcut Buttons

How to Change Roku Shortcut Buttons

Generally speaking, Roku’s remotes are well-liked for their user-friendly design, especially those equipped with voice control features.

However, there’s a notable limitation—specifically, the four buttons at the bottom adorned with logos from popular streaming platforms.

    Understanding Roku’s ‘Quick Access’ Buttons

These “quick access” buttons allow users to jump straight into apps like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video with a single press—quite handy for those who subscribe to these platforms.

Nonetheless, many people don’t subscribe to all four streaming services, and those who do may not even use the ones featured on these buttons (it’s worth noting that streaming services pay Roku for placement).

So, let’s get to the point: you cannot reprogram the quick access buttons on a Roku remote. You can disable them if you’re willing to use a screwdriver and take the remote apart, but altering their function isn’t possible otherwise.

    Introducing Roku’s ‘Personal Shortcut’ Buttons

On the brighter side, Roku provides some remotes with “personal” shortcut buttons that you can customize.

The original Roku Voice Remote Pro includes two personal shortcut buttons, marked “1” and “2,” positioned just above the branded keys. These programmable buttons let you store any voice command—like “Open Max”—for easy access later with a single press.

In contrast, the newer second-generation Voice Remote Pro features one personal shortcut button but offers dual personalization options. While it requires an extra step compared to its predecessor, the functionality remains similar.

Which Roku Devices Feature Personal Shortcut Buttons?

The second-generation Voice Remote Pro—which includes one personal shortcut button—comes packaged with the latest Roku Ultra player launched in 2024, boasting enhancements like backlit buttons. You can also purchase this updated remote separately for $30.

The original Roku Voice Remote Pro lacks the backlight feature and has a slightly lower battery capacity but does have two personal shortcut buttons, making it more convenient by saving you a press. You can purchase this older model directly from Roku for $30.

There’s also the Enhanced Voice Remote, which, while sacrificing some Pro features (like the rechargeable battery and headphone jack), retains two customizable shortcut buttons.

The Enhanced Voice Remote was bundled with older Roku devices such as the 2022 Roku Ultra and the now-discontinued Roku Streambar Pro, and is not available for individual purchase.

Lastly, there’s the legacy Roku Touch tabletop remote, which unfortunately is no longer sold separately.

So, are you ready to set up your Roku remote’s personal shortcuts? There are two straightforward methods to do so.

Method 1: Create a Shortcut Using a Voice Command

The first way to program a personal shortcut on your Roku remote is simply to use a voice command.

Press the remote’s microphone button and say a command, whether it’s “open Pandora,” “launch Paramount+,” or “find comedies.” If you’re reading this, you likely want to set a shortcut for a specific streaming app.

After your Roku player processes the command, press and hold the personal shortcut button you wish to assign. A screen overlay will prompt “Select an option below for shortcut 1,” assuming you pressed the “1” button on the original Voice Remote Pro, or selected the first personal shortcut slot on the second-gen version.

Then, using the remote’s arrow buttons, navigate to the right and select Last voice command. Soon after, a confirmation message will pop up.

Method 2: Assign Through a Shortcut Button

The second method involves starting with the shortcut button directly.

By pressing and holding a shortcut button, an overlay will emerge at the bottom of the screen showcasing various options, which may include Channel (for launching a streaming service like Netflix or Apple TV+), The Roku Channel, the Live TV Guide, sleep timer, or closed captions.

Select your desired option to be assigned to the personal shortcut you held down. A confirmation overlay will appear for you to review your selection. If everything looks good, wait for the countdown to conclude, or press the Back button if you’d like to make changes.

If you ever wish to reprogram an existing personal shortcut, just follow the same steps outlined above.
