This VR Headset Senses Your Emotions to Tell a Unique Story

Imagine putting on a VR headset, walking into a vibrant nightclub bathed in glowing lights, and being greeted with a warm smile and a friendly, “Hey, you look so cute!” As you smile back, the headset detects your facial expression and recognizes your genuine happiness. Instead of passively watching a story unfold, your actual emotions become an integral part of the experience.

This concept is at the heart of Rekindle, an innovative VR game developed by researchers at Northeastern University. The game merges immersive storytelling with advanced emotion-tracking technology to foster a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences. The developers hope Rekindle can inspire empathy and drive positive social change.

Set in a future where a totalitarian government erases memories of sexual identity deemed undesirable, players embark on a quest to reconnect with forgotten memories related to LGBTQ+ identities. Throughout the game, players explore a world where they gather fragments of memories—each representing significant moments, both joyful and painful. Some memories highlight celebrations of love and community, while others recall tragic events like the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, where 49 individuals lost their lives in an attack targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

What distinguishes Rekindle from many VR titles is its ability to respond to the player’s real-time emotional cues. Using the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, the system tracks subtle facial movements—like the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth—and analyzes dozens of muscle signals to gauge emotions such as happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, or fear. It even detects complex feelings, such as being happily surprised or heartbreakingly angry.

At certain points, the game prompts players to consciously express specific emotions before progressing, transforming players from passive viewers into active participants whose feelings influence the storyline. This dynamic encourages a stronger emotional bond with the main character and helps players see the world from perspectives different from their own.

While many video games collect data on player actions, Rekindle goes a step further by understanding emotional responses during critical moments. As reactions vary among individuals—particularly between those familiar with LGBTQ+ history and those less informed—these differences promote self-reflection on personal biases and feelings.

Beyond entertainment, this emotion-tracking technology has other promising applications. It could enhance mental health therapies, offering virtual counseling experiences for anxiety, phobias, or post-traumatic stress disorder by providing therapists with insights into a patient’s emotional state—beyond just verbal reports. The technology might also improve road safety, alerting drivers to signs of fatigue or stress, or guide individuals through stressful situations by recognizing fear or anxiety and providing calming support.

Although Rekindle remains experimental, it demonstrates how blending virtual reality, storytelling, and emotion recognition can create more meaningful and personalized experiences. Such technology holds potential not only for fostering empathy but also for transforming how we understand and support each other.

  • How to Solve a Tassel and a Tale in Where Winds Meet

How to Solve a Tassel and a Tale in Where Winds Meet

The enchanting world of Where Winds Meet is full of magic and discovery, blending mythical adventures with rich RPG gameplay. As with other parts of the map, the sandy desert area called Hexi offers many paths to follow the main story.

You can focus on completing quests one after another or take your time to explore and learn more about the world around you. For example, the side quest titled “A Tassel and a Tale” is just one of many smaller stories you can pursue, and completing it unlocks additional content.

How to Get the Red Tassel

While exploring the Ayisu area in the Jade Gate Pass region of Hexi, you’ll come across a side quest called A Tassel and a Tale. It becomes available as you explore the Squarewall Hold Ruins Boundary Stone. Here, you’ll meet a man named Li, sitting just in front of the Boundary Stone. He talks about red tassels that need collecting but says he will only give his to someone called Granny Pan.

Although you’ll ask Li for the tassel multiple times, he won’t hand it over. If you back away far enough so he can’t see you and then position yourself behind him, you can use a special skill called “Celestial Sieze” to quietly take the tassel from his pocket without him noticing. After that, you can deliver the red tassel directly to Granny Pan.

Note: Be cautious if you venture too deep into the Squarewall Hold Ruins village—there are aggressive Utuk Raptors nearby that you won’t be able to defeat yet.

    How to Find Granny Pan

To locate Granny Pan, head northeast from the Boundary Stone in Squarewall Hold towards the Heroic Tomb. There, you will find Granny Pan and Young Yichao among the red flowers. They will share the story behind the red tassels and explain how collecting them honors the departed.

Granny Pan's location in Where Winds Meet

After speaking with them, Granny Pan will ask you to hang the tassel onto a spear nearby. Doing this begins the quest called The Final Retreat, which takes place back in the Squarewall Hold Ruins village. Completing this quest helps remove the dangers blocking access to the area, making it safer to explore.

  • How To Use The Book Of Vile Darkness In DND: Tips for Completing and Solving

How To Use The Book Of Vile Darkness In DND: Tips for Completing and Solving

As Dungeons & Dragons continues to grow and update, the characters and items within its universe also change. The 2024 ruleset introduces some adjustments to magic items and updates a few famous Non-Player Characters (NPCs).

Vecna is one of those recurring villains that players generally avoid unless they’re prepared for a dangerous end. Even without him, the artifacts he possesses are just as threatening as the lich himself. One such artifact is the Book of Vile Darkness, which is well-known for serving as a manual to guide others down Vecna’s evil path. Here’s how you can include it in your game.

Determine the Contents of the Book

The Book of Vile Darkness is usually bound to Vecna. Removing him from it is a tough task. The details inside are so horrifying that the book isn’t meant for casual reading. Keep this in mind when deciding if your players will get access to it, and what information they might uncover.

Remember, any good-aligned character who opens and reads the book must make a Charisma saving throw. If they fail, their alignment shifts to neutral evil.

If you want to introduce a specific evil theme into your campaign, the book is a great place to start. It could contain information on devastating plagues, rituals to summon dark entities, or heinous spells you create. Keep the content appropriate so players feel comfortable opening and exploring the book — include triggers or warnings if needed.

The book might suggest including items such as true names of fiends or a vile ritual to become a lich, along with other dark spells the Dungeon Master invents. When creating your version of the book, consider what kind of evil details fit your story and where to place triggers so players aren’t caught off guard.

    Discuss the Consequences

Using the Book of Vile Darkness comes with serious risks. Here’s what happens to a character who ends up with the book:

    • Their strength increases by two, but they lose two points in another ability score.
    • They develop a disfigurement, which you and the player can decide on. This disfigurement grants advantage on Persuasion checks with evil creatures and intimidation with good ones.
    • They can recall twice as much evil information from the book than usual.
    • They gain a weapon-like power called Dark Speech, which damages both them and nearby non-evil creatures when they speak it.
    • They will be compelled to commit an evil act within ten days of gaining the book; if they don’t, the book disappears.
    • If they die while attuned to the book, their soul is taken by an evil entity, making revival impossible until it’s freed.

If your players are okay with these consequences, you can then add specific properties or effects to the book to make it even more unpredictable and dangerous.

    Add Your Own Content

This is the fun part—customizing the book for your campaign. You can modify it to work with fifth edition rules or add new evil effects, such as the classic Vile Damage from the 3.5 edition. Vile Damage is so sinister that it can only be healed on sacred ground, adding a layer of challenge.

    Consider including properties like:

    • Three minor beneficial effects
    • One major beneficial effect
    • Three minor harmful effects
    • Two major harmful effects

The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide offers several artifact options with these kinds of properties. For example, some effects might prevent the user from healing hit points or reduce their ability scores, or prevent them from attuning to other magic items. Use these guidelines to customize the book’s properties and make it a truly unique and dangerous artifact for your game.

  • George Lucas Dropped A Star Wars Twist For Obi-Wan’s Story

George Lucas Dropped A Star Wars Twist For Obi-Wan’s Story

Obi-Wan Kenobi is arguably one of the most significant and recognizable characters in the Star Wars universe. First appearing as a seasoned Jedi in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, he serves as a crucial mentor to both Luke and Anakin Skywalker, making his eventual estrangement from the latter all the more poignant. Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness have both vividly portrayed Obi-Wan over the decades, fleshing out his complex narrative throughout various installments of the franchise.

However, the original concept for Obi-Wan Kenobi by Star Wars creator George Lucas was quite different from what fans know today. In a discussion with StarWars.com, Iain McCaig, a behind-the-scenes artist for Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, revealed that Lucas initially planned to switch the names of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, portrayed by Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson, respectively. “It’s fascinating to see how concepts change over time,” McCaig noted. “At one point, the elder Jedi was going to be called Obi-Wan while the younger one was named Qui-Gon.”

McCaig elaborated that Lucas envisioned a scenario where McGregor’s character ultimately took on his master’s name in a way that honored Qui-Gon’s mission to train Anakin. “As Obi-Wan meets his end and Qui-Gon defeats Darth Maul, he stays with his Master until he passes away. By doing so, he not only embraces his Master’s quest but also adopts his name. Qui-Gon becomes Obi-Wan,” McCaig explained. This twist was meant to clarify why, in A New Hope, Alec Guinness’ character expresses surprise at the name Obi-Wan: because, until that point, he identified as Qui-Gon.

McCaig did not provide specific reasons for Lucas’s choice to abandon this narrative twist. While it could have added depth to Obi-Wan’s introduction in A New Hope, it seems Lucas opted for a more streamlined depiction of the character’s backstory as it unfolded in The Phantom Menace.

This revelation provides fascinating insight into Lucas’s detailed approach to character development and storytelling within the prequel trilogy, as well as its ties to the larger saga, including A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Fans are left to ponder how many other ideas were considered and ultimately set aside during the making of the franchise’s initial six films.

  • The Impact of Answering Loretta in Life Is Strange: Double Exposure

The Impact of Answering Loretta in Life Is Strange: Double Exposure

In classic *Life Is Strange* style, Life Is Strange: Double Exposure is packed with critical choices that shape the narrative. One of the first significant choices comes toward the end of Chapter 1, just a few days after Safi’s tragic passing.

When you first enter the Fine Arts Building following your conversation with Yasmin, Safi’s mother, Max overhears a phone call from Gwen Hunter. Loretta, the local true crime podcaster, discovers you eavesdropping. You face a choice: do you respond to her questions or call her bluff, letting her inform Gwen about your snooping?

This choice only arises due to Safi’s death and will solely influence your interactions with Dead World Gwen.

What Happens If You Call Loretta’s Bluff?

If you choose to call Loretta’s bluff, she hurries to Gwen’s office and reveals that you were eavesdropping. Gwen quickly dismisses Loretta’s claim, yet once Loretta steps out, she questions you about your eavesdropping. Regardless of your response, she will express disappointment and ask you to keep your distance from her.

Gwen Shooting Loretta Down In Life Is Strange: Double Exposure.

<p_Later, in Chapter 3, when you arrive at Gwen’s office, she greets you with, “No conversations for you to conveniently overhear this time” and reluctantly agrees to discuss Safi’s book and Maya Okada with you. However, she will not let you read Safi’s manuscript when asked.

To access Safi’s manuscript from Gwen, you’ll need to shift into Living World Gwen’s office, which is empty, and retrieve the manuscript from the drawer you saw Dead World Gwen use.

While exploring Gwen’s office, you can snap a photo of her vintage record player and share it on your Crosstalk page. If you previously called Loretta’s bluff and Gwen knows about your eavesdropping, she’ll comment on your post, noting that she didn’t give you permission to rummage through her belongings.

What Happens If You Answer Loretta’s Questions?

Choosing Answer Loretta's Questions In Life Is Strange: Double Exposure.

If you decide to engage and answer Loretta’s questions, you might tell her that you really don’t know much and suggest she speak to someone who has known Safi longer than six months.

Choosing What Name To Give To Loretta In Life Is Strange: Double Exposure.

Loretta will then request a lead on who else to interview, with options including Gwen, Safi’s mother, or Vinh. No matter which name you provide, Loretta will express gratitude and leave.

Gwen Letting You Read Safi's Manuscript In Life Is Strange: Double Exposure.

Later in Chapter 3, Dead World Gwen will surprisingly welcome your arrival when you inquire about Safi’s work and Maya. She’ll permit you to read Safi’s manuscript, stating that “Someone ought to.”

If you choose to post a snapshot of her vintage record player in this instance, she’ll leave a positive comment for you.
