After 15 years, Marvel’s Ghost Rider is making an epic return to the big screen, with Ryan Gosling stepping into the lead role. The Canadian actor took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to announce the highly anticipated film.

Scheduled for release in 2028, Ghost Rider will be directed by Shawn Levy, renowned for his work on Stranger Things, the Night at the Museum series, and Deadpool & Wolverine. According to reports from Variety, Levy and Gosling previously collaborated on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter project.

The last time fans got a glimpse of Ghost Rider was through Gabriel Luna’s portrayal of Robbie Reyes on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Although there were reports of a series in development, it was ultimately canceled in 2019.

Ryan Gosling Announced as the New Ghost Rider! Release Date Unveiled

Gosling appeared at Comic-Con and said, “Wow. Is this really happening? As you may know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time,” expressing his excitement.

Levy shared his thoughts post-panel, saying, “I’m experiencing some serious flashback vibes because I was here two years ago when we revealed Deadpool & Wolverine. That night will always be memorable because I got to meet some of the best fans.”

He continued, “Gosling is incredible. I say that with the utmost respect. Last year, we spent a lot of time working on Starfighter, and as Ryan started talking about this role, I knew we had to jump on it. See you in 2028!”

Fans have taken to social media, expressing their excitement ahead of the film’s 2028 debut:

    • “Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider??? Shawn Levy directing??? Best casting Marvel has done in years. Now, who should be the villain? Mephisto or Blackheart?”
    • “Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider? That sounds like it has serious potential.”
    • “No way… Nicolas Cage did a great job, but I can’t wait to see Ryan Gosling’s take on Ghost Rider.”

Many fans believe Gosling is the perfect fit to portray Johnny Blaze. The character was previously brought to life by Nicolas Cage in 2007 and 2011 films, both of which garnered mixed reviews. Despite that, nostalgia runs deep among fans, especially given the absence of Ghost Rider appearances in the current Marvel cinematic universe, fueling ongoing calls for either a movie or a series.
