    The overall evidence shows that controlled breathing consistently reduces cravings for nicotine, alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and other substances. While the effects tend to be modest, they are statistically significant.

    Different breathing styles were compared in the review. Heart rate variability biofeedback demonstrated the strongest evidence when practiced over multiple sessions, implying it might help diminish long-term cravings. Simpler methods appeared particularly effective during single sessions for quick relief when craving hits suddenly.

    Evidence regarding reduction of withdrawal symptoms and dependence was less definitive due to fewer studies examining these outcomes. However, some findings hinted at potentially significant improvements, encouraging further research.

    Slower breathing is believed to help by calming the body’s stress response. Since cravings often result from anxiety, emotional stress, or stressful situations, slow, controlled breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system—sometimes called the body’s relaxation response—slowing the heart rate and helping restore emotional balance.

    Tingling in His Lip Was No Spice—It Was an 18-Year-Old Stroke

    During a lunch break at his shoe sales job, 18-year-old Julian Nelson reached for a chicken wing and suddenly experienced a tingling sensation on the right side of his lip. Shortly after, the tingling spread to his fingertips on that hand, and then his entire hand went numb, making it impossible to hold his food. Julian realized this wasn’t caused by the spicy wings—something was seriously wrong, something “super weird,” unlike anything he had ever felt before.

    He quickly told his boss and then called his girlfriend. Moments after hanging up, he lost control of the entire right side of his body. Julian was rushed to a hospital in Oakland, California, where doctors diagnosed him with a stroke and arranged for his transfer to a more specialized hospital in Redwood City, about 35 miles away.

    The cause of his stroke was a brain arteriovenous malformation (bAVM) on the left side of his brain. These malformations are tangled clusters of abnormal blood vessels that typically stay silent until they cause bleeding, seizures, or headaches. Though bAVMs are rare, they often occur in young adults when they do.

    When Julian regained consciousness, he was surrounded by family. His grandmother, Gloria Nelson, couldn’t understand how such a young man, just 18, could have experienced a stroke. Prior to the incident, Julian was active—jogging, cycling, hiking, and working out regularly. The stroke left him needing physical, occupational, and speech therapy. His goal was to recover enough to walk and talk again, and he was able to leave the hospital walking with a cane and talking.

    Alongside working at the shoe store, Julian attended community college and planned to resume his studies the following year. But then he faced another challenge. One day, as he arrived at his grandparents’ house and was about to get out of his car, he had a seizure. His grandfather happened to walk outside at that moment and saw him collapse, immediately calling an ambulance. The stroke occurred in 2005, and seizures began about a year later. Julian estimates he’s had around 15 seizures since then. He now takes medication to help control them. In 2008, he underwent brain surgery to remove damaged tissue around an aneurysm.

    Julian continues to experience weakness in his right hand and struggles with fine motor skills in his right foot. He remains dedicated to strengthening and improving both. Over the years, he’s also survived being shot multiple times during mugging attempts and the loss of his wife.

    His grandmother, Gloria, credits his resilience to unwavering faith: “He’s faced many heartbreaking events, but his faith has always been what gets him through.”

    In March 2025, Julian remarried, and he and his wife are expecting their baby girl in November. He takes pride in his perseverance and shares his story to inspire others to push through their own challenges.

    “People often underestimate what they’re capable of,” Julian says. “Believing in yourself can turn that into reality.”

Breathing exercises and aspiration precautions helped cut down hospital-acquired pneumonia, while bowel management protocols minimized digestive issues.

    The first and most common way is by finding chickens. Unfortunately, finding chickens is random. You’ll need to break all light sources and breakable objects in each dungeon, because chickens might appear unexpectedly. You can also find stands with chickens on them, but to get a chicken from these stands, you’ll need to sacrifice a card.

    #### Increase Your Recovery Stat

    Once you unlock the Power Up building in your village, you can upgrade the Recovery stat. Improving this stat will automatically heal you for a certain amount of health after each encounter during a run. Additionally, there are cards and a Gem that boost healing: the cards are Pummarola, which heals 2 HP, and Pummadora, which heals 4 HP. The Gem, called Restore Health, also increases healing.

    #### Use Clerici

    Clerici is a character you unlock later in the game. She might not be very strong on her own, but if you have unlocked a couple of Crawler Slots, she becomes an effective support character. Her special card heals you for 3 HP each time you use it, making her a valuable ally for healing.

    #### Use Celestial Dusting

    Lastly, there are two more cards worth knowing about. One is Celestial Dusting, which is the starting attack card for O’Sole. When you use Celestial Dusting to defeat enemies, you have a chance to earn Little Heart cards. These are Wild Cards that, when used, heal at least 1 HP. Using this card not only deals damage but also provides opportunities for healing through these wild cards.

    The study analyzed data from more than 1,500 stroke patients. Researchers compared brain scans taken at stroke onset, then again at 24 hours and 72 hours later, to observe how swelling evolved.

    Patients were followed up three months after their strokes. It was observed that those with more pronounced increases in swelling were more likely to die or become dependent on others for daily activities.

    The link between swelling and outcomes was gradual but unmistakable. Even small increases in swelling correlated with a higher risk of adverse effects, highlighting how minor brain changes can have serious consequences.

    Among the critical periods was the first day after the stroke, during which swelling appeared to have the strongest connection to poor health outcomes. Changes over the subsequent two days also played a significant role.

    This presents a valuable window for intervention. If medical professionals can intervene within the first three days, it might be possible to limit brain damage.

    Currently, there are no treatments specifically targeting brain swelling post-hemorrhagic stroke. Instead, doctors focus on monitoring patients and managing complications. This study underscores the potential for developing therapies that directly address swelling.

    Researchers are now investigating medications that could reduce brain inflammation, with the goal of controlling swelling and protecting healthy brain cells.

    While these findings are exciting, they should be interpreted carefully. The study demonstrates a strong correlation but does not establish direct causality. Further clinical trials are necessary to determine if reducing swelling genuinely improves recovery outcomes.

    A stroke is a critical medical event that occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is blocked or reduced. This interruption can cause damage to brain cells, leading to difficulties with movement, speech, and cognition.

    Many stroke survivors face persistent physical challenges, particularly weakness or paralysis on one side of the body.

    For years, researchers have been exploring how the brain recovers after a stroke. A recent study published in The Lancet Digital Health offers new insights. It suggests that the brain may adapt in ways that scientists hadn’t fully understood before.

    The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Southern California, with collaboration from an international team through the global ENIGMA network. They examined brain scans from more than 500 stroke survivors across 34 research centers in eight different countries.

    The scientists utilized sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze MRI scans. They trained models using tens of thousands of brain images to estimate the “age” of different brain regions. It’s important to note that this “brain age” isn’t related to the person’s actual age but reflects how healthy or deteriorated that brain region appears.

    The findings showed that areas of the brain affected by stroke tend to age more rapidly. This isn’t entirely surprising, as injury can weaken brain tissue. What was unexpected, however, was that the healthy side of the brain sometimes appeared biologically younger than expected.

    This “youthful” appearance was most evident in patients with more severe movement impairments. Even months after the stroke, these individuals displayed signs that their undamaged brain regions had undergone changes making them look biologically younger.

    Scientists think this might be a sign that the brain is trying to adapt. When one part of the brain sustains damage, other areas may step in to compensate. This process is called neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to rewire itself.

    The study identified the involvement of a particular network called the frontoparietal network, which assists with movement, attention, and coordination. In patients with severe impairments, this network on the healthy side of the brain showed a more “youthful” pattern, indicating adaptive changes.

    It’s important to understand that this doesn’t mean the brain has fully healed. Rather, it indicates that the brain is exerting extra effort to regain function, reorganizing itself to help patients move more effectively and perform daily activities.

    An advantage of this study was its large sample size. By analyzing data from hundreds of participants worldwide, researchers could identify patterns that smaller studies might miss. The use of AI also enabled a deeper understanding of complex brain data in ways that weren’t possible before.

    That said, the research has limitations. It was based on a single snapshot in time and did not follow patients over years. As a result, it can’t fully explain how these brain changes evolve during recovery.

    The opioid epidemic remains one of the most pressing public health issues in recent history. Opioids encompass both prescription pain medications and illicit substances like heroin and fentanyl.

    Although these drugs can provide relief for pain, they carry a high risk of addiction. Many individuals prescribed opioids initially for medical reasons develop dependence, with some progressing to more potent substances over time.

    In the U.S., the toll of opioid addiction has been profound. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 80,000 lives were lost to opioid overdose in 2023 alone. This translates to hundreds of deaths every single day.

    While there has been a slight decline compared to previous years, the death count remains alarmingly high. Since 1999, over 800,000 Americans have died due to opioid overdoses.

    Amid this crisis, the need for effective treatment and support systems has grown more urgent. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a medical condition where individuals struggle to control their use of opioids, even when it jeopardizes their health and life.

    One crucial element in long-term recovery is consistent engagement in treatment. Longer participation correlates strongly with higher chances of recovery and reduced relapse risk.

    A recent study published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine highlights a community-based program called Honor’s HEROES, which shows promise in helping individuals stay in treatment and enhance their quality of life.

    This program operates in Houston as part of UTHealth Houston and focuses on assisting those facing hurdles like homelessness, lack of health insurance, and previous overdoses.

    Led by Dr. James Langabeer, the program’s founder, researchers tracked 1,124 adults involved in Honor’s HEROES over five years. The aim was to evaluate how effectively the program maintained treatment engagement and improved participants’ lives over time.

    Honor’s HEROES employs a flexible, person-centered approach. Instead of a one-size-fits-all method, it offers multiple support options, including medication-assisted treatment to reduce cravings, counseling for mental health and behavioral issues, peer support from others with similar experiences, and group activities. This strategy is designed to meet individuals where they are and cater to their specific needs.

    The findings were promising. About 74% of participants remained in treatment for a minimum of 90 days—an important milestone linked to positive, long-term recovery outcomes.

    Many stayed longer, especially those accessing multiple services, averaging around 128 days in treatment over a 180-day period.

    The study also noted significant improvements in participants’ overall well-being. Their quality of life scores rose by over 13 points on average, and about 71% reported feeling better after participating in the program.

    These results suggest that the program not only helps individuals stay in treatment but also supports them in rebuilding their lives.

    Interestingly, despite relapse being common in opioid use disorder, the program recorded low rates of overdose and mortality. Staying connected to care during tough times appears to reduce the risk of fatal outcomes.
