    Pakistani national Asif Merchant was found guilty in a U.S. court Friday for conspiring to assassinate President Donald Trump and other high-profile American officials, with ties to Iran, according to the Department of Justice. Merchant acknowledged during the trial his involvement with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps but claimed he was acting under duress to protect his family in Tehran.

    He was accused of attempting to recruit individuals within the United States for a scheme targeting Trump and others as retaliation for Washington’s 2020 killing of Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani, during Trump’s first term. Federal prosecutors reported that the plot also aimed at then-President Joe Biden and Nikki Haley, who challenged Trump for the Republican presidential nomination that year.

    The DOJ stated Merchant was convicted of “murder for hire and attempting to commit an act of terrorism crossing international borders,” with the plot allegedly directed by Iranian authorities. The trial took place in Brooklyn, New York, just days before Trump authorized a military strike on Iran in collaboration with Israel, which has escalated into the region’s largest conflict in years.

    Merchant claimed he was never explicitly ordered to kill a specific individual but mentioned that his Iranian handler listed three potential targets during conversations in Tehran. Law enforcement intercepted the plot before any attacks could occur. An individual contacted by Merchant in April 2024, who reported his activities, later became a confidential informant for authorities.

    Merchant was arrested that same year and pleaded not guilty. Tehran has denied any involvement or intent to target Trump or other U.S. officials.

    Nikhil Gupta, 54, admitted to charges of murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. These charges together could result in a maximum sentence of 40 years behind bars. Gupta appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in federal court in Manhattan to enter his plea.

    Gupta has been held in Brooklyn since June 2024, after being extradited from the Czech Republic, where he was detained a year earlier. Following his extradition, Gupta initially pleaded not guilty. His legal representatives did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

    Prosecutors allege that Gupta conspired with an official from the Indian government to eliminate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a U.S. resident and dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada, who advocates for an independent Sikh state in northern India.

    The Indian government has publicly distanced itself from any involvement in plots targeting Pannun, affirming that such actions go against official policy.

    The uncovering of alleged assassination schemes targeting Sikh separatists in the U.S. and Canada has strained diplomatic relations with India, which continues to deny any involvement in such plots.

    What Is The D.G. Member’s Guild?

    The D.G. Member’s Guild serves as Heartopia’s primary progression system. It works like an experience level linked to your everyday activity. As your Member level goes up, you unlock new hobbies, get more land to build on, and receive special items that expand what you can do in the game.

    Instead of being tied to story events or combat, the Guild rewards consistent engagement. It encourages you to interact with residents and complete routine daily tasks, helping to steadily grow your town and abilities.

    What Are The Rewards?

    Each new D.G. Member level gives you a set of rewards. These rewards include access to more hobbies, additional home plots, bigger storage, and extra features like emotes, new recipes, and events. As you level up, the rewards become more impressive, giving you more ways to enjoy and customize Heartopia.

    How To Level Up?

    Leveling the Guild mainly involves earning Contribution Medals, which act as experience points. You can complete up to five resident requests each day, earning a total of 50 medals. These requests are quests or neighbor tasks that refresh daily.

    Skipping days slows your progress, especially as you reach higher levels where bigger features and expansions become available. To keep a steady pace, try to complete all five requests every time you play.

    How To Unlock And Expand Home Plots

    Unlocking additional home space depends entirely on your Guild level. As you progress, new plots become available as a reward. To expand your property, you need to manually access the Guild screen:

    • Open the D.G. Member’s Guild menu.
    • Tap the four-square icon in the top-right corner.
    • See which plots are unlocked and available for expansion.
    • Manage and develop your land as your membership level increases.

    These expansions are not automatic—they require you to act. Expanding your land allows for more buildings and decorating possibilities.

    How Do Hobbies And Hobby Progression Work?

    Heartopia has seven hobbies, but you won’t unlock them all right away. Some appear during the tutorial, while others are locked behind your Guild level, unlocking gradually as you progress. Each hobby introduces new ways to gather resources or add to your daily routine, including:

    • Fishing: Catch and sell fish or use them in cooking.
    • Gardening: Grow crops for cooking or sale.
    • Cooking: Prepare meals with ingredients from fishing and farming.
    • Insect Catching: Capture and sell insects.
    • Birdwatching: Photograph and catalog birds.
    • Cat Caring: Adopt and raise a kitten.
    • Dog Caring: Adopt and care for a puppy.

    Unlocking each hobby requires a Hobby Expansion Ticket, which you earn at certain Guild levels, mainly levels 2, 3, 5, 8, and 11. The later hobbies, Cat Caring and Dog Caring, become available after reaching Guild level 12, with Dog Caring requiring you to unlock Cat Caring first.

    Once a hobby is available, you can improve it using Hobby Upgrade Tickets, also earned through your Guild level. Each upgrade enhances your resource gathering capabilities and customization options.

    Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attempted to carry out an assassination against Israel’s ambassador to Mexico late last year. However, the operation was thwarted, and there is no ongoing danger, according to a U.S. official on Friday.

    Later that day, Mexico’s government responded, stating it “has no information about an alleged attack targeting the Israeli ambassador to Mexico.”

    Anonymously, the U.S. official told Reuters that the plot against Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger was active during the first half of this year.

    “The plan was neutralized and currently doesn’t pose a threat,” the official explained. “This incident is part of a long pattern of Iran’s global campaign to target diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and others who oppose them. Every country hosting Iranian presence should be deeply concerned.”

    Details about how the plot was foiled remain undisclosed.

    Israel’s Foreign Ministry credited Mexican security and law enforcement agencies for “interrupting a terrorist network directed by Iran aiming to attack Israel’s ambassador in Mexico.”

    The Iranian Embassy in Mexico dismissed the accusations as “completely false,” according to the semi-official Mehr news agency.

    “We will never tarnish the good reputation of Mexicans, our friends. We see betrayal of Mexico’s interests as betrayal of our own, and respecting Mexico’s laws is our top priority,” the embassy stated.

    The U.S. and allies have repeatedly accused Iran and affiliated groups of planning violent actions against opponents. Iranian officials deny these allegations, claiming they are motivated politically.

    Besides, a dozen nations have condemned what they perceive as increasing Iranian plots involving assassinations, kidnappings, and harassment.

    Britain’s MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said last month that Iran is desperately trying to silence critics worldwide, citing Australia’s exposure of Iranian involvement in antisemitic schemes and the Netherlands’ revelation of a failed assassination attempt.

The eagerly awaited sequel is scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2025, marking 22 years since the franchise’s original film, 28 Days Later, debuted, and 18 years since its follow-up, 28 Weeks Later, was released in 2007. This film reunites 28 Days Later‘s director, Danny Boyle, with screenwriter Alex Garland, and a follow-up titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple has also been confirmed.

    Nia DaCosta, known for directing The Marvels, will take the helm for this sequel, which began production in August. Although the full cast for The Bone Temple has yet to be revealed, it will be based on a script co-penned by Garland and Boyle. Reports suggest The Bone Temple could be the second part of a trilogy, a notion that has been reinforced by one of the film’s stars, who offered insights into the film’s intriguing plot.

    In a recent interview with IndieWire, actor Ralph Fiennes, featured in Conclave, shared thrilling updates about 28 Years Later, stating, “It’s three films, of which two have been shot.” He provided details on the sequel’s narrative: “Britain is 28 years into a devastating plague of infected individuals who are violent and rabid, with only a few safe communities remaining. The story revolves around a young boy seeking a doctor for his ailing mother, guiding her across the stunning northern English landscape, all while the infected lurk in the surrounding woods and hills.”

    According to IndieWire, Fiennes plays the doctor that the young lead character is desperately trying to locate, hinting that “he’s a character who may initially seem strange but ultimately becomes a beacon of hope.” The cast of 28 Years Later also includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, Edvin Ryding, and Cillian Murphy. Aside from Fiennes’ revelations, not much else is known about the storyline and characters. However, Murphy is expected to reprise his role as Jim from 28 Days Later in both this sequel and The Bone Temple.

    It remains unclear whether Murphy will return for the anticipated third installment. The specifics regarding its director, cast, and title are still under wraps. It’s possible that Sony may wait to gauge the performance of 28 Years Later before committing to a second sequel.
