This development came after the platform’s developer announced via social media that a third-party data center responsible for hosting the site’s servers had been destroyed by fire. The developer stated, “Sorry, our data center has been burned 🙁 We’re no longer able to provide the file hosting service.”

    However, there are indications that the developer might reconsider and potentially relaunch the site due to overwhelming user demand. As of the latest update, while the site remains accessible, users are unable to stream episodes and are greeted with the message above.

    It’s important to note that the site experienced a significant increase in traffic following HiAnime’s shutdown, which led to sluggish streaming speeds and slow load times for many users.

    The notorious piracy streaming platform AnimeKai has announced it will be shutting down, confirming that the developer has decided to end the project after the data center caught fire.

    “Sorry, our data center has been burned 🙁 We’re no longer able to provide the file hosting service,” the announcement read.

    AnimeKai was considered one of the best platforms for illegally streaming anime, offering features such as resuming where you left off, login sync to track anime lists, personalized recommendations, a discovery tab, and dedicated comment sections for each episode. Many users took to social media to say farewell, with some asserting that despite efforts by legal sites like Crunchyroll to eliminate illegal streaming platforms, new ones will inevitably appear.

    One user on X (formerly Twitter) warned others against sharing links to pirated sites on popular social media platforms, fearing they could be shut down. They wrote, “A perfect site getting shut down because y’all can’t keep your mouths shut. Like, BRO, DO NOT POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA!”

    Another commented, “Hianime is gone, Aniwatch is gone, now AnimeKai is gone. We do have alternatives, but they’re not great—even with ad blockers, they just redirect to shady sites every time you click something.”

    An unidentified group hijacked an oil tanker off Yemen’s coast in the Gulf of Aden on Saturday, steering it toward Somalia, according to the Yemeni coast guard. The vessel, named EUREKA, was seized near Shabwa province by individuals who boarded the ship, took control, and then navigated it in the direction of the Somali shoreline. The coast guard, linked to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, has committed to investigating the incident.

    “The position of the tanker has been confirmed, and efforts are underway to track it and implement measures aimed at recovering it and protecting its crew,” the statement read, without revealing the crew’s size or nationality.

    MarineTraffic reports indicate that EUREKA is a Togolese-flagged oil products tanker, which was last reported to be docked at Fujairah port in the United Arab Emirates in late March.

    Piracy along Somalia’s coast reached its climax in the 2000s, with hundreds of attacks peaking in 2011. International naval patrols and improved shipping tactics significantly curbed these acts. However, recent weeks have seen a resurgence in attacks, according to a report from the European Union naval mission operating off Somalia’s eastern coast.

    Operation Atalanta, the EU’s naval unit dedicated to monitoring the region, documented three assaults in late April, as reported by the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO).

    Since late February, shipping in the region has faced disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran. Nonetheless, there is no immediate evidence connecting Saturday’s hijacking to the broader conflict.

    Last month, a new faction of pirates operating out of Garacad in Puntland, northeast Somalia, captured another tanker, a security official from the area told AFP.

    Urana emphasized the damaging impact piracy has on the manga industry. She acknowledged that many fans resort to pirate sites due to financial constraints and limited access, stating she had spent recent days studying the circumstances in various countries, including their economic situations.

    She shared, “If we remain silent now, the worth of Japanese manga and other creative works—earned through the sacrifices and relentless dedication of those before us—could be forever diminished.”

    She added, “Over the past few days, I’ve researched the financial and social circumstances in different regions. I understand that for many, pirate sites are the only option to access manga, and I realize prices tend to be higher overseas. I’ve even encountered comments like…”

    She further explained, “I’ve also seen claims that ‘reading for free doesn’t hurt sales.’ That’s simply not true. When something is offered for free, its perceived value drops. Once people get accustomed to free content, they often stop supporting legitimate sources. However, I believe that true fans who genuinely love a work will support it properly.”

    Urana also expressed her desire to uphold the value of manga, stating, “I don’t want piracy to undermine the worth of our industry. To assist those unable to afford or access our work, Ando and I have been exploring various solutions for a long time. Although I can’t reveal details yet, rest assured, we’re actively working on it. Publishers are also making efforts.”

    She urged fans to refrain from labeling her or the artist responsible for Gachiakuta, Hideyoshi Andou, as “racist,” and to avoid viewing piracy as free promotion for their manga.

    Known for her active social media presence, Urana frequently interacts with her fans and has openly voiced her stance against piracy. She has also faced online disputes with her Western fanbase over what she considers toxic behavior, including misidentification of Gachiakuta characters’ genders—such as mistakenly labeling Tamsy as transgender—and crossing legal boundaries related to her work.

    According to Yahoo Finance, citing Super Hero Hype in January 2026, Japan reported a loss of $38 billion due to piracy related to anime and manga. This figure, released by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, encompassed several countries, including Vietnam, France, Brazil, Japan, the United States, and China.

    A Fan Question and Urana’s Clear Response

    One fan asked if it was acceptable to read Gachiakuta for free on Discord. Her reply was straightforward: “That’s illegal.” The fan later issued an apology, saying, “I want to apologize to everyone harmed because of me… I asked that question innocently.”

    According to Oatmeal Dome, the individual in question is James Williams (known online as Archbox), who has operated several piracy websites since 2019. He has offered hardware modifications, sold customized Switch consoles with pirated games, and run multiple illegal online shops.

    Legal documents state that “Since 2019, Williams has been the owner, manager, operator, creator, administrator, supplier, and/or overseer of several online piracy shops, actively promoting these shops within communities that contain thousands of members.”

    Digital Phablet is requesting that a court award it $4.5 million in damages from a Reddit user involved in Switch game piracy, citing the operation of multiple piracy websites.

    The individual refused to cease activities despite multiple requests from Digital Phablet, leading to legal action. Additionally, they did not respond to the lawsuit.

    “Nintendo is requesting a court to grant damages of $4.5 million from a Reddit user operating piracy sites for Nintendo Switch,” reports Oatmeal Dome. “The person ignored previous warnings and refused to stop after Digital Phablet asked them to do so in March 2024. They also failed to respond to the legal notices.”

    Digital Phablet noted that Williams did not hire legal representation nor attempt to reduce the claimed damages, which drew criticism from community members and gamers alike.

    The company reiterated its stance that Williams failed to comply after repeated cease-and-desist orders, issued in March and May 2024. By June 2024, Digital Phablet filed suit, and the court sided with the company.

    They also claimed that Williams had deliberately deleted or concealed evidence, including social media posts related to the case.

    Williams did not seek legal counsel or attempt to contest the damages, which surprised many gamers and Reddit users.

    Nintendo’s ongoing fight against piracy is well-known. Recently, the company’s legal team has targeted ROM sites and took action against the popular Switch emulator, Yuzu. Yuzu was shut down in March 2024, with its developers required to pay Nintendo a total of $2.4 million in penalties.

    This action followed the early leak of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on piracy platforms, enabling players to enjoy the game ahead of its official release. Nintendo has also continued to dismantle fan-made projects, including titles like Pokémon MMO Pokenet and Super Mario 64 HD.
