Key Insights from FinTech LIVE 2024: Top 10 Highlights

“We quickly understood that institutional blockchains would take a long time to mature.”

At FinTech LIVE Singapore, Shawn Douglass, co-founder and CEO of Amberdata, stressed the crucial role of digital asset data in the financial sector.

Shawn reflected on Amberdata’s journey, showcasing its remarkable expansion: “In the early days, we viewed institutional blockchains as a potential shared framework for banks and corporations, aimed at enhancing ledger transparency and automating smart contracts.

“Fast forward to today, and we see these concepts largely realized, with major banks such as JP Morgan, HSBC, and Goldman Sachs actively adopting enterprise blockchain solutions.”

“From the outset, we recognized that it would take considerable time for institutional blockchains to reach full readiness. As a result, we shifted our focus to support public, open blockchains as well as centralized and decentralized exchanges, understanding that accurate data is vital for business development and informed decision-making.”

Since then, Amberdata has been on a continuous growth trajectory, and Shawn describes the company’s evolution as ‘mind-blowing.’

  • Zūm Rails and Fiserv Unite to Embed Finance for US Firms

Zūm Rails and Fiserv Unite to Embed Finance for US Firms

Zūm Rails, a fintech company based in Canada that offers open banking and instant payment solutions through a single platform, has formed a partnership with Fiserv.

This collaboration is aimed at empowering businesses in the United States to provide embedded finance services directly to their customers.

    Enhancing Embedded Finance Services

Through this partnership, Zūm Rails will leverage Fiserv’s embedded finance technology, making Fiserv the main transaction processor for Zūm Rails’ payment gateway.

This integration will allow companies—ranging from large corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—to execute various financial tasks without depending on traditional banks or outside service providers.

These functions encompass managing accounts payable and receivable, onboarding merchants, generating reports, conducting reconciliations, and implementing fraud prevention measures.

Among the initial users of this solution are Homebase, a real estate platform, and Passive, a property management software.

The embedded finance sector, presently valued at $84 billion, offers substantial potential for businesses across diverse fields, although the significant entry barriers have kept many from entering this domain.

This is largely due to the historical challenge of needing to collaborate with multiple vendors to develop entirely new integrations for each additional service.

According to Sunil Sachdev, Fiserv’s Head of Embedded Finance, “As businesses seek innovative ways to enhance and solidify their relationships with customers, there is an increasing interest in embedding financial services directly within software platforms.”

  • Ecommpay Enhances Token.io Partnership to Advance EU Open Banking

Ecommpay Enhances Token.io Partnership to Advance EU Open Banking

Ecommpay, a worldwide payment solutions provider, has broadened its collaboration with Token.io, a company specializing in account-to-account (A2A) payment infrastructure. This enhanced partnership now incorporates virtual accounts for the Netherlands, Spain, France, and Ireland, significantly enhancing Ecommpay’s Open Banking Advanced suite.

With the addition of these four countries, virtual accounts will allow businesses to receive immediate settlement confirmations and facilitate API-driven refunds or payouts. This expansion is set to enhance transaction speeds and overall efficiency for online retailers.

The introduction of local settlement International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs) for these nations aims to address the issue of IBAN discrimination. This issue arises when businesses or financial institutions handle payments from foreign IBANs differently, which can lead to delays in settlements or even transaction rejections.

Moshe Winegarten, Chief Revenue Officer at Ecommpay, states, “By offering local IBANs and smooth payment processes, we are reaffirming our commitment to promoting financial inclusion and improving local payment options. This will, in turn, enhance the customer experience and support higher conversion rates for merchants.”

    Boosting Open Banking Adoption

The extension of this partnership comes at a time when the A2A payment market is expected to experience substantial growth. Industry forecasts predict that open banking-enabled transactions, commonly referred to as ‘Pay by Bank’, will reach 5.3 billion across Europe by 2027.

Ecommpay was one of the pioneers in offering open banking capabilities to merchants in 2020. Their Open Banking Advanced solution, developed in collaboration with Token.io, is an enterprise-level product that features virtual accounts as a key offering.

Todd Clyde, CEO at Token.io, shares his thoughts on open banking’s potential: “We are thrilled to enhance Ecommpay’s Open Banking Advanced solution with Token.io Virtual Accounts, which provide instant refunds and payouts, among other capabilities that empower Payment Service Providers to fully leverage the benefits of open banking across various markets and applications.”

Using open banking-enabled payment methods can significantly benefit merchants by lowering costs, speeding up access to funds, and improving cash flow.

For end users, these methods offer secure and seamless payment experiences without the need to share credit card information or manually enter sensitive data.

The expanded partnership also enhances the speed of fund acceptance through SEPA Instant, an instant credit transfer scheme across Europe. This feature enables real-time payments within the Single Euro Payments Area, improving transaction speed for both businesses and consumers.

  • TrueLayer and Stripe Team Up to Enhance UK Pay by Bank

TrueLayer and Stripe Team Up to Enhance UK Pay by Bank

TrueLayer: Pioneering Open Banking in the UK

As per the latest statistics from Open Banking Limited, the open banking landscape in the UK has now surpassed 7 million active users, with transaction volumes increasing by an impressive 15% each month throughout 2023.

TrueLayer has emerged as a leader in this movement, becoming the first provider in the UK to offer commercial Variable Recurring Payments (VRP) through its API.

Last year marked a significant achievement for the company, as it facilitated over 1 million VRP transactions on a monthly basis—demonstrating a clear demand for more flexible payment options.

Eileen O’Mara, Chief Revenue Officer at Stripe, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited to partner with TrueLayer, empowering British businesses that sell high-value goods and services to save substantial amounts in payment processing fees each month.”

This collaboration is anticipated to particularly benefit industries that handle high-value transactions, including luxury retail, travel, and B2B services. These sectors often face hefty card processing fees that can significantly impact their profit margins. By harnessing the power of open banking technology, businesses can mitigate these costs while also providing customers with a smoother payment experience.

Nevertheless, the journey towards widespread adoption of Pay by Bank solutions has its hurdles. Issues related to consumer trust and familiarity remain prevalent, as many individuals still favor the security and benefits tied to credit card payments. Enhancing education and user experience is essential for promoting greater acceptance.

Francesco Simoneschi from TrueLayer remains hopeful about the future: “This collaboration with Stripe is just the beginning. We are confident that Open Banking payments have the potential to evolve into the preferred method for online transactions, offering a quicker, more secure, and cost-effective alternative to traditional payment methods.”

“As we keep innovating and broadening our services, we look forward to witnessing the positive impact this transformation in digital payments will have on both businesses and consumers.”
