Digital Phablet – This article contains significant spoilers for the season finale of “Squid Game,” now streaming on Netflix.

The exhilarating season finale of “Squid Game” runs just under an hour, captivating audiences with a series of unpredictable twists as it reaches its conclusion. A pivotal moment occurs shortly after the 20-minute mark, resulting in the demise of the protagonist, Gi-hun/Player 456 (played by Lee Jung-jae).
The episode opens with Gi-hun, Myung-gi/Player 333 (Yim Si-wan), and an infant strapped to Gi-hun’s chest, marking the last three competitors standing after the initial two rounds of the Sky Squid Game showcased in Episode 5. The child is actually the daughter of Jun-hee/Player 222 (Jo Yu-ri), who previously sacrificed herself, leaving her daughter in Gi-hun’s guardianship.
In a tense standoff, Myung-gi approaches the last pillar, wielding a dangerous ultimatum—he threatens to let go of the infant, intending to leave Gi-hun to fall to his fate from the second pillar. Undeterred, Gi-hun remains committed to protecting the baby even amid the terrifying challenge atop the towering structures. Myung-gi considers winning the game by tossing his own daughter from the last pillar.

With great reluctance, Gi-hun places the child on the ground, allowing Myung-gi to take her to the third pillar. Just as the pathway between the pillars begins to retract, Gi-hun leaps across, brandishing a knife to engage Myung-gi in a death match. The infant remains on the side as the perilous fight unfolds. Myung-gi eventually lifts her again, threatening to drop her if Gi-hun refuses to concede. After releasing the baby, they continue their fierce struggle until they both plummet over the edge. Gi-hun manages to catch an exposed bar just in time, but Myung-gi falls to his death as Gi-hun clings frantically to him.
After what seems like victory, Gi-hun ascends the pillar only to realize neither he nor Myung-gi activated the button to start the final round. In a heart-wrenching twist, Gi-hun must now choose to either end his life or sacrifice the child for the game to conclude. Gazing into the two-way glass, where he knows In-ho/The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) is observing, Gi-hun grapples with his decision. Ultimately, he chooses to let go, setting the baby down before his emotional leap. His final words resonate: “We are not horses.” He hints that humanity is inherent, but he does not finish the thought.
Gi-hun’s brave act bequeaths victory to the child, prompting a visibly moved In-ho to take the baby to safety. As they depart, In-ho and his crew scramble upon discovering authorities are closing in, racing to vacate the Squid Game site. Meanwhile, his brother Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), who has been on a relentless search for the island and desperately seeks his brother, witnesses this from the control room. He confronts In-ho, questioning his role as Front Man, but In-ho simply walks away with the infant.

Fast forward six months, we find No-eul (Park Gyu-young) returning to the amusement park where she previously worked before her recruitment as a game guard. She encounters Gyung-seok/Player 246 (Lee Jin-uk), who is oblivious to her true identity as the masked figure that forced him to abandon the games for his ailing daughter. He feels a pang of recognition, but she brushes it off, saying she has worked there before, giving his daughter, now healthy, a lollipop and wishes them well.
Upon learning that her daughter, whom she thought was dead in North Korea, might be alive and spotted in China, No-eul rushes off in search of her. During this time, we see Kang Cheol, Gi-hun’s best friend’s younger brother, reuniting with his mother who had been trapped in North Korea as No-eul checks in at the airport.

After Jun-ho frees Woo-seok (Jun Suk-ho) from prison, they wonder what happened to Gi-hun’s prize money, which had vanished by the time Jun-ho attempted to reclaim it in subsequent months. Upon returning home, Jun-ho finds that In-ho has left him with the baby and a bank card loaded with Player 222’s earnings, totaling 45.6 billion won.
In the closing scenes, In-ho travels to Los Angeles to deliver a package to Seong Ga-yeong, Gi-hun’s daughter. He informs her of her father’s passing and hands her the package. Though disappointed with her father’s absence in the U.S., she accepts the package. Upon opening it, she discovers his 456 costume and a card that appears to have Gi-hun’s winnings from the initial game, indicating that In-ho took the money from Gi-hun’s belongings posthumously. As he rides through downtown Los Angeles, In-ho notices two individuals engaged in a familiar game of ddakji in an alley, exchanging a knowing glance with a well-dressed woman reminiscent of the Recruiter from the Squid Games before the car drives on.
The finale concludes with a stark contrast; on one side stands a destitute man, while on the other, a woman (Cate Blanchett) dressed in an elegant suit, eerily similar to the Recruiter from In-ho’s Squid Games. Their eyes meet, and they share a moment of recognition before In-ho rolls up the car window, driving away.

ALBAWABA – Netflix has become the center of attention on social media following the release of a new trailer for its live-action rendition of One Piece, showcasing Tony Tony Chopper and the actress voicing him. The announcement has spurred a variety of reactions from the anime and manga communities.
While numerous fans applauded Netflix for its portrayal of Chopper, others expressed dissatisfaction with the CGI effects, labeling them as “uncanny” and drawing comparisons to Sonic’s entry into live-action films. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “Honestly, I think that’s a fantastic live-action adaptation!”
Another remarked, “He looks great… I don’t see why there’s so much negativity.”
The debate around whether animated series should be adapted into live-action continues, with some critics arguing that it’s merely a quick cash grab by corporations like Netflix.
Despite the mixed feedback, the inaugural season of live-action One Piece garnered commendations from audiences for its solid casting, impressive visuals (with the exception of Arlong), and engaging pacing.

Netflix has confirmed that actress Mikaela Hoover, known for her role in Superman, will lend her voice to Chopper. However, this decision disappointed some fans who hoped that Brina Palencia, the English voice behind Chopper in the original anime, would reprise her role. The teaser clip also indicates a release window of 2026, generating excitement among viewers.
Additionally, Netflix is collaborating with the renowned Japanese animation studio WiT Studio to produce a remake of the original One Piece anime, while Toei's adaptation remains ongoing.
Netflix Teams Up with David Leitch for Gears of War Movie Adaptation
Netflix is capitalizing on the current trend of video game adaptations by developing a movie based on the hit game, Gears of War. The streaming giant has tapped David Leitch, a former stuntman who has transitioned into directing, to take the reins on this action-packed project.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch is currently in talks to direct the film, while Jon Spaihts, known for co-writing the acclaimed film Dune, will handle the screenplay for the adaptation.
Leitch, alongside his wife Kelly McCormick, will produce the project through their production company, 87 North. Netflix will collaborate with The Coalition Studio, the Canadian game developer behind the Gears of War franchise, to bring this film to life.
Acquiring the rights to Gears of War in 2022, Netflix aims to create a major motion picture that could extend into other formats, such as an adult animated series.
First released in 2006, Gears of War is a third-person shooter game set on a planet called Sera, where humanity teeters on the brink of annihilation due to a war with monstrous underground beings known as the Locust Horde. The story follows Delta Squad soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they battle to save human civilization.
The game quickly became a top seller in 2006 and has since spawned a successful franchise on the Xbox 360, with eight installments including sequels, spin-offs, and prequels.
David Leitch’s journey in the film industry began as a stunt performer, doubling for stars like Brad Pitt and working on two of the Matrix films. He gained recognition as an uncredited co-director on John Wick before making his full directing debut with 2017’s Atomic Blonde. Since then, Leitch has established himself as a go-to action director, known for films such as Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train. His upcoming project is How to Rob a Bank, slated for release in 2026, featuring actors like Nicolas Hoult, Pete Davidson, and Anna Sawai.
Before diving into the titles departing Netflix, let’s highlight some new arrivals. Currently, Havoc, a fresh action flick featuring Tom Hardy, is available to stream. Additionally, next month will see the release of Vince Vaughn’s comedy Nonnas on May 9, along with a new chapter in the Fear Street series titled Fear Street: Prom Queen on May 24.
While these three films are set to stay for a while, a few titles will bid farewell to Netflix on May 1. Among them is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a fantastic animated feature chronicling the adventures of Miles Morales. Read more about Across the Spider-Verse and two additional films below.
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
Universal
Definitely, Maybe ranks highly among Ryan Reynolds’ lesser-known gems. This romantic comedy showcases a more tender side of the actor, often known for his comedic flair. As Manhattanite Will Hayes (Reynolds) navigates a divorce, his 10-year-old daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) becomes curious about how he met her mother.
Will transforms this story into a guessing game, naming three women from his past while altering their identities for Maya to deduce who her mother is. Through this charming narrative, Will reflects on his past and the one who slipped through his fingers.
If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is akin to Batman Begins, then Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stands as its The Dark Knight. This sequel not only pushes the boundaries of animated film but is also destined to be recognized among the greatest sequels ever created. In Brooklyn, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) grapples with balancing his everyday life and his responsibilities as Spider-Man.
When the villain Spot (Jason Schwartzman) proves to be overwhelming, Miles and Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) embark on a multiverse journey, discovering a society teeming with Spider-People. However, Miles soon finds himself at odds with Miguel (Oscar Isaac), their leader, as tension rises among the heroes. With limited support, Miles must rely on his instincts and emotions to safeguard the multiverse.
Stream Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Netflix.
King Kong (2005)
Universal Pictures
After exploring the realm of Middle-earth in the acclaimed Lord of the Rings series, Peter Jackson shifted his focus to the famed gorilla in King Kong. This modern retelling of the 1933 classic is set during the Great Depression, as director Carl Denham (Jack Black) embarks on an expedition to Skull Island. Joining him are actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody), and a small crew.
After a harrowing encounter with the island’s natives, the crew learns that the true menace is Kong, the colossal ape residing there. When Kong abducts Ann, a surprising bond develops between them. The film climaxes in a breathtaking showdown in New York City, featuring visual effects that remain impressive two decades later.
The Addams Family is back with explosions of humor and chaos in the sneak peek of Wednesday season 2.
Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming second season of Wednesday, the supernatural comedy centering on the daughter of the Addams Family, who possesses a twisted sense of humor and psychic abilities. Jenna Ortega reprises her iconic role, a performance that has propelled her into the spotlight.
This time, Wednesday is back at Nevermore Academy, where her brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) will also join as a student. Their parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), are not too far behind and will have a more significant presence on campus.
Upon her return to Nevermore, Wednesday confidently states, “I already know where the bodies are buried.”
Jonathan Hession / Netflix
Wednesday season 2 promises to showcase more of our favorite student as she plays the role of a crime-solving detective tackling a new murder mystery while diving deeper into the mystery surrounding her parents.
The returning cast includes Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Sunday as Bianca Barclay, Moosa Mostafa as Eugene, Georgie Farmer as Ajax, and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, among others.
This season also welcomes several new faces, including Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, Noah B. Taylor, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, and Joonas Suatamo.
Directed by the visionary Tim Burton, who will also serve as an executive producer, Wednesday continues to be shaped by creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.
Netflix
Season 1 of Wednesday received widespread acclaim, securing four Emmy Awards and nominations for both Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Jenna Ortega). Its success in viewership numbers positions it as the most popular English-language series on Netflix.
The second season of Wednesday will be released in two parts, with the first part available on August 6 and the second part on September 3. Stream it exclusively on Netflix.
Netflix boasts an extensive array of movies and shows, but actually finding something you want to watch can be quite a task. This is why the company’s foray into AI-driven search technology is so promising—it could drastically reduce the frustrating endless scrolling and help you get to the good stuff quicker.
AI Could Assist You in Choosing Your Next Show
As highlighted by Bloomberg, Netflix is currently testing a new AI-enhanced search feature. While users can already search for films and shows, the existing search relies heavily on specific keywords like the title of the movie, a genre, or an actor’s name. This is often why I prefer to use Netflix’s hidden codes instead.
The new AI search feature, developed in partnership with OpenAI, would enable users to “search for shows using much more specific terms, including the viewer’s mood.” Additionally, the search options would “extend far beyond genres or actor names.”
We haven’t had the chance to try out Netflix’s AI search yet, but if their claims are true, it could significantly simplify the process of discovering fresh content that’s worth watching. I know I’m not alone in wanting to pick something based more on how I feel at that moment rather than a specific title.
Currently, access to this experimental feature is quite limited; only Netflix users in Australia and New Zealand who are using an iOS device can try the AI search. Furthermore, it’s only available to those who choose to opt in, as it’s not being rolled out to anyone without their consent.
Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou confirmed to The Verge that this test is underway. They also mentioned that it will expand to the U.S. “in the coming weeks and months.” Zhou added, “We’re still in the early stages of this feature, and we’re focused on learning and gathering feedback during this beta period.”
Understanding Viewer Preferences Is Key
Utilizing AI to assist people in finding what they want to watch seems like an obvious step forward, especially since Netflix already has essential resources in place. This includes metadata for each piece of content. In theory, AI can effectively bridge the gap between what viewers are eager to watch and what is available in Netflix’s vast catalog.
It has almost become a joke that users spend so much time scrolling through Netflix titles that they never end up watching anything at all. However, there’s a kernel of truth in this stereotype. If Netflix’s AI search transitions successfully out of beta testing and becomes accessible to everyone, perhaps that stereotype will finally become a thing of the past.
There’s a common joke in the streaming community: by the time you finally select something to watch, you either run out of snacks or lose interest. To mitigate this, Netflix introduced a feature called “Play Something” to help curb endless browsing. Yet, at the core of the issue lies a flawed search function on the platform.
For years, users have voiced their frustration with the algorithm’s tendency to recycle suggestions, compounded by a limited sorting and filtering system. The abundance of categories often adds to the confusion.
However, AI may soon change the narrative surrounding Netflix's search capabilities. According to a report from Bloomberg, Netflix is exploring an AI-driven overhaul of its search functionality, allowing users to express their preferences more freely to find films and TV shows that fit their tastes.
How AI Can Transform Netflix Search
"The AI-driven search engine enables users to search for shows using more specific criteria, including how the viewer feels at the moment," according to the Bloomberg article, which adds that the system will then suggest options from Netflix’s extensive library.
Currently, Netflix is piloting this AI-enhanced search feature in Australia and New Zealand. A company representative informed The Verge that they plan to broaden the beta testing into the U.S. market in the “coming weeks and months.”
At the moment, this initial testing phase is exclusive to the iOS platform, and it remains uncertain when or if it might extend to the web and Android versions. Nonetheless, Netflix has been integrating AI into its infrastructure for some time.
The company maintains a public dashboard outlining how it utilizes Machine Learning technology throughout its services, with search being an essential focus.
What Makes This Exciting for Me?
In a 2022 publication, Netflix detailed its method of closely monitoring user interactions, including what content users click on and how long they watch various titles. This insight allows the search system to infer user interests at any moment, presenting suggestions even before users start typing in the search field.
While this approach is promising, Netflix clearly states that it heavily relies on its in-house recommendation engine to populate search results. Essentially, the algorithm retains a significant degree of control over the search experience, limiting user agency.
This sets the stage for AI's role, as it can enhance natural language processing capabilities. Instead of restraining users to predefined categories and names, an AI could allow them to simply articulate their mood or viewing criteria in the search box.
Imagine having a conversation with AI and effortlessly discovering the perfect show to watch?
Thus far, my interactions with advanced AI tools like Gemini Live have been very fulfilling, and I'm eager for Netflix to offer a similarly enriched experience through its AI-powered search tool in the near future. Ultimately, I hope AI will simplify the process of discovering what's new and what will soon depart from Netflix, alongside other specific queries.
The newest title debuting on Netflix Games is Thronglets, a virtual pet adventure inspired by Tamagotchis that unfolds a narrative layered within gameplay. This intriguing game, set in the Black Mirror world, requires players to nurture and develop whimsical digital creatures known as Thronglets. While tending to these adorable beings, keep in mind that their capabilities extend beyond merely occupying your device.
Within the Black Mirror narrative, Thronglets is a long-lost game, initially canceled in 1994 and thought to be gone forever until someone uncovered a way to access it. Successfully fostering numerous Thronglets leads to forming a harmonic Throng, and creating various Throngs allows players to unlock video snippets revealing the story of the game’s enigmatic creator, Colin Ritman. These snippets consist of interviews conducted by Mohan Thakur.
You might recognize the names Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur; they are characters portrayed by Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry in the interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. This connection firmly intertwines Thronglets with the Bandersnatch narrative, raising a thought-provoking question: Just how close do we want to come to bringing Black Mirror’s unsettling scenarios into reality?
Black Mirror
The Black Mirror episode featuring Thronglets premieres today, April 10, 2025. Viewers will soon have the chance to watch it for themselves, though it may leave them contemplating whether they truly want to care for their own Thronglets.
As players engage more with the game, they unlock insights from the “Ritman Retrospective.” Netflix describes Thronglets not just as a digital pet simulation but as an exploration of “the depths of human nature and the implications of our digital fixations.” Upon completing the game, participants receive a personality assessment that they can share on social media for comparison. Netflix encourages sharing results using the hashtag #Thronglets, yet even this could feel like a challenge of sorts.
Every major network and streaming service is on the hunt for the next blockbuster series like Yellowstone. The western drama from Taylor Sheridan has become a ratings powerhouse and, with its various spin-offs, has established a sprawling television universe. In a bid to capture the essence of Yellowstone, Netflix is set to unveil its new Western series, Ransom Canyon, which has just released its first trailer.
In the trailer, Josh Duhamel’s character, Staten Kirkland, reflects, “In Ransom Canyon, everyone’s running from something or running to something.” Staten, a widower who is still mourning his wife, manages the Double K Ranch in Texas Hill Country. His peaceful life is disrupted as rival families vie for dominance over the land. Amidst this escalating conflict, Staten attempts to rediscover love with Quinn O’Grady (played by Minka Kelly), who returns from New York to operate the local dance hall.
With its themes of land disputes intertwined with romance, Ransom Canyon cleverly blends the gripping drama of Yellowstone with the heartwarming charm reminiscent of Virgin River.
Alongside Duhamel and Kelly, the cast features Lizzy Greene as Lauren Brigman, James Brolin as Cap Fuller, Eoin Macken as Davis Collins, Meta Golding as Paula Jo, Marianly Tejada as Ellie Catawnee, Jack Schumacher as Yancy Grey, Garrett Wareing as Lucas Russell, and Andrew Liner as Reid Collins.
Anna Kooris / Netflix
April Blair is the creator, writer, and executive producer of Ransom Canyon, which is based on Jodi Thomas’ book series sharing the same title. The direction will be handled by Amanda Marsalis, David McWhirter, Meera Menon, and Michael Offer, and the first season will comprise 10 episodes.
This marks Netflix’s second original Western for 2025, following the success of American Primeval, Peter Berg’s gritty portrayal of westward expansion, which quickly became a fan favorite upon its January premiere.
Ransom Canyon will be available for streaming on Netflix starting April 17.
This past week, the film community mourned the loss of David Lynch, a trailblazing director, who died at the age of 78. Numerous fans and colleagues have taken to social media and other platforms to express their condolences and celebrate his influential body of work. Among those paying tribute is Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix, who shared his admiration for Lynch on Instagram, calling him one of his “all-time favorite filmmakers.”
Sarandos reflected on a pivotal moment when Lynch nearly brought “his final project” to Netflix. “He visited Netflix to discuss a limited series that we were eager to support. It was a David Lynch creation, filled with intrigue and unpredictability, and we were excited to join him on this creative journey,” Sarandos recounted. “Unfortunately, the pandemic and some health issues hindered production on this project. We assured him that whenever he was ready, we would be on board.”
“David Lynch was an unapologetic genius,” Sarandos expressed. “His extensive body of work is astonishing, innovative, daring, and artistic. I will always ponder what he envisioned for us.”
Showtime
Lynch is celebrated for his influential films, which left a lasting impact on American cinema from the 1970s to the 2000s. His final film, Inland Empire, was released in 2006, and his last directorial project was the much-acclaimed Twin Peaks: The Return, which he co-wrote and directed in 2017, revisiting the beloved 1990s series he created with Mark Frost. Although this third season remains his final directorial endeavor, there were speculations for years regarding other potential films and television projects he was developing.
Among the rumored projects was a limited series for Netflix, initially thought to be titled Wisteria and later Unrecorded Night. Peter Deming, the cinematographer of Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks: The Return, mentioned in a 2021 interview that he was unaware of the project’s status, as it had been postponed due to the pandemic, but he hoped it would “come back to life at some point.” It’s likely this is the same project that Sarandos referred to.
While fans of Lynch may be saddened to learn that he was close to producing another limited series, they can still take solace in the remarkable films and shows he has created during his prolific career. His work, particularly Twin Peaks: The Return, stands as an extraordinary conclusion to the oeuvre of a filmmaker of his stature.
Popular Netflix actor José de la Torre, known for his role in the series Toy Boy, has sadly passed away at the age of 37.
International media reports indicate that the cause of his death has not been made public. In June, José shared on social media that he was facing a serious illness but chose not to disclose specific details. He stepped back from the spotlight to focus on his treatment and recovery.
José’s funeral was held on December 6 in his hometown of Montilla. The news of his untimely death has left both fans and fellow actors in mourning.
His colleagues have expressed shock and sadness over the sudden loss of such a talented individual. “It’s hard to believe that José is gone,” one actor commented.
José de la Torre’s performances have made a lasting impact on audiences, marking him as a memorable figure in the entertainment industry. His death is a significant loss for the acting community and his many fans around the world.
Can you believe it’s almost that time again? A new chapter is approaching, bringing a season filled with resolutions—alongside the ups and downs of weight fluctuations and promise-making. For Netflix, January spells yet another month full of exciting films, engaging TV shows, and interactive games.
In January 2025, the streaming giant is set to unveil an array of high-caliber productions, including Harlan Coben’s mystery series, Missing You, Cameron Diaz’s much-anticipated return in Back in Action, the second season of the action-packed series The Recruit, a new Wallace & Gromit adventure, and a fresh Western series called American Primeval. Additionally, viewers can look forward to other titles, such as all seasons of Younger, the first three Spider-Man movies, and the premiere of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

Netflix is a leading streaming platform, but it can sometimes become a source of frustration. If the incessant autoplay previews or automatic episode plays are driving you crazy, there’s good news: you can easily disable these features.
With just a couple of adjustments in your Netflix account settings, you can turn off autoplay previews and halt the automatic playing of the next episode.
This means no more fumbling to mute the volume or rapidly skipping away from a title to avoid the preview. You’ll gain total control over what content plays and when. Additionally, you can stop episodes from continuing to play after you’ve fallen asleep, which can help conserve your data usage. It’s a simple process—let’s go over how to do it.
Note: You can also do this on your mobile device; just make sure to use a browser instead of the Netflix app.
Step 2: In the menu on the right side of the screen, click on Account.
Here, you’ll find a variety of information about your account, including your profiles. You’ll need to manage the autoplay settings for each profile individually (some users may prefer to keep it). By default, your account will be selected.
Scroll down and select Edit Settings, and then proceed to Playback Settings.

Step 3: Uncheck both boxes under Autoplay controls for you. There will be one box for autoplay previews and another for the next episode. Disabling the second box will stop Netflix from playing previews of titles when you hover over them, eliminating the need to quickly mute or skip past them. Unchecking the first box will prevent Netflix from automatically proceeding to the next episode in a series. While binge-watching is a popular way to enjoy shows on Netflix, turning off this option will mean you have to take a more active role in your viewing experience.

Step 4: Finally, click on Save to confirm your choices. Log out of your account.
Once you update your profile settings on one device, those changes will apply across all devices where you access Netflix.

Netflix indicates that there might be a slight delay before the new settings take effect, but you can expedite the process by switching profiles and then switching back to reload your profile with the updated settings.
If you find that you miss the autoplay features, it’s easy to return to your settings and re-enable them.
These steps apply to all Netflix subscription plans.
The highly anticipated second season of the animated Netflix series Arcane is set to premiere next month, and Riot Games is preparing to honor the occasion within League of Legends. As part of Patch 14.22, they will introduce Ambessa Medarda, a character from the show, as a new champion.
Ambessa is the head of the Noxian Medarda family and first emerged midway through the inaugural season of Arcane to provide guidance to her daughter Mel. Following Jinx’s devastating attack on Mel and the Piltover council at the season’s climax, it appears that Ambessa will seek vengeance in the upcoming season. Riot Games sees her as a captivating character worthy of inclusion in the game that inspired Arcane. Game designer Max Perlman mentioned in comments to Digital Trends that the show served as a foundational inspiration that helped developers define the essence of her abilities.
Ambessa is designed to shine in the top lane, focusing on 1v1 engagements against her opponents. Her abilities support this playstyle: her passive ability, Drakehound’s Step, allows her to dash after using an ability, enhancing her next spell with buffs to range, damage, and attack speed, all while restoring some energy. Her Q ability, initially named Cunning Sweep, delivers damage to enemies in front of her. If she successfully hits an opponent, it transforms into Sundering Slam, dealing additional damage to the first enemy struck and affecting others in a line.
Her W ability, Repudiation, grants her a shield while causing damage to nearby foes upon impact with the ground. The E ability, Lacerate, inflicts Area-of-Effect damage and pairs well with Drakehound’s Step for a potent double strike. Ambessa’s Ultimate Ability, Public Execution, allows her to teleport to the furthest enemy champion along a line chosen by the player, suppressing, damaging, and stunning that character.
It seems Ambessa will appeal to players who favor an aggressive style, especially newcomers diving into the game after watching Arcane. Her introduction isn’t the sole connection to the series, as League of Legends is also updating its All Random, All Mid game mode with a new map inspired by the Bridge of Progress, slated for release alongside Patch 14.22 and continuing until January 8, 2025.
The second season of Arcane will debut in three acts on November 9, November 16, and November 23.

The debut season of Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft has just launched, but Hayley Atwell, who plays the lead role, is already contemplating her future as the legendary character. This is hardly surprising, given the enduring appeal of Lara Croft and the intriguing twists introduced at the end of the first season. The finale serves up a new conspiracy that Atwell’s Lara is poised to unravel in potential future installments.
Atwell has expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to portray the beloved Tomb Raider. In a recent conversation with GamesRadar+, she shared, “Being part of [Lara Croft] in any capacity would be an absolute dream for me, and I recognize the responsibility that comes with it given her popularity and significance.”
Reflecting on her experience, Atwell shared that she had “an absolute blast” working on the first season of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. She conveyed her gratitude for collaborating with director Meredith Layne and showrunner Tasha Huo, saying, “I’ve loved every moment of working with them.” The actress further reaffirmed her willingness to reprise her role as Lara, whether in a new season of the show or through another project. “I would be truly honored to continue exploring this character or to have Lara in my life in any different capacity,” she affirmed.
Netflix
The future of The Legend of Lara Croft is currently uncertain. While Netflix has not officially confirmed a second season, reports from The Hollywood Reporter indicated in 2023 that the initial pickup may include an order for two seasons. This suggests that a follow-up season could already be in the works, but fans are left waiting for an official announcement from Netflix to clarify the show’s trajectory.
In addition to the animated series, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag, is reportedly developing a Tomb Raider television show in partnership with Amazon. Atwell could find herself in the running for a part in that series as well. Not only does she physically embody the character of Lara Croft, but her voice work suggests she can effectively channel the character’s spirit. Fans of both Marvel and Mission: Impossible know that Atwell is more than capable of delivering the high-octane action that a Tomb Raider series would demand.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Atwell will have the chance to continue her journey as The Legend of Lara Croft. One thing is clear, however: she has already built a strong connection with the iconic heroine.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft season 1 is now available for streaming on Netflix.
Netflix has identified a potential Oscar contender. On Monday, the streaming giant unveiled the official trailer for Emilia Pérez, a French crime musical that it aims to promote during award season.
In this bold film directed by Jacques Audiard, Karla Sofía Gascón portrays Emilia, a leader of a Mexican cartel. She recruits lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) to help her stage her own death and undergo gender reassignment surgery. By executing this intricate plan, Emilia aspires to “finally live authentically as her true self,” according to Netflix.
Alongside Gascón and Saldaña, Emilia Pérez features performances from Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez, who plays Gustavo Brun.
This film, written and directed by Audiard—renowned for works like A Prophet, Rust and Bone, Dheepan, and The Sisters Brothers—is adapted from a chapter in the 2018 novel Écoute by Boris Razon. Initially conceived as an opera libretto, the screenplay evolved into this feature film.
Emilia Pérez | Official Trailer | Netflix
Emilia Pérez premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The Spanish-language musical earned three accolades: Jury Prize, Soundtrack Award, and Best Actress, which was shared by Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz. Following its debut at Cannes, Netflix secured the film’s rights for distribution in North America and the U.K.
Netflix has high hopes for Emilia Pérez during the upcoming awards season, especially for the 2025 Oscars. France has submitted the film for Best International Feature Film, and Netflix is also aiming for nominations in several major categories, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Gascón, as well as Best Supporting Actress for Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz. Should Gascón receive a nomination, she could become the first openly trans actress to achieve this milestone.
Emilia Pérez is set to hit select theaters in the U.S. and Canada on November 1 and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting November 13.
