Employees at a temple in Thailand were stunned when a 65-year-old woman was discovered alive inside her coffin moments before her scheduled cremation.
The incident occurred at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a Buddhist temple in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. Staff heard a faint knocking and saw slight movement inside the coffin. When they opened it, they found the woman opening her eyes and moving her arms.
The woman’s brother, who traveled from Phitsanulok—about 500 kilometers away—brought her to the temple. According to Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general and financial manager, the man’s sister had been bedridden for two years and recently lost consciousness, appearing to have stopped breathing two days earlier.
The brother sought hospital assistance but was turned away due to the absence of an official death certificate. He then asked the temple to perform a free cremation, but was again told that the necessary documentation was missing. During a discussion about obtaining the certificate, staff heard knocking from within the coffin. The woman was promptly examined and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to canonize seven new saints this Sunday, including the first from Papua New Guinea, an archbishop who was killed during the Armenian genocide, and a Venezuelan known as a “doctor for the poor.”
Among those to be recognized at the ceremony in St. Peter’s Square on World Mission Day are three nuns who dedicated their lives to helping the impoverished and ill, along with Bartolo Longo, a former Satanic priest.
Born in 1841, the Italian attorney eventually returned to the Catholic faith and founded the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii.
This will be the second canonization performed by the U.S. Pope since he assumed leadership of the Catholic Church on May 8. Last month, he declared Italians Carlo Acutis—a teenage dubbed “God’s Influencer” who spread faith online before passing away at age 15 in 2006—and Pier Giorgio Frassati—a model of charity who died at 24 in 1925—as saints.
In Catholic tradition, canonization is the final step toward sainthood after beatification. The process requires proof of at least two miracles, the individual being deceased for a minimum of five years, and leading an exemplary Christian life.
The individuals to be declared saints this Sunday include Peter To Rot, a lay catechist from Papua New Guinea who was killed during Japan’s occupation in World War II; Armenian bishop Ignazio Choukrallah Maloyan, murdered by Turkish forces in 1915; and Jose Gregorio Hernandez Cisneros from Venezuela, a layman who died in 1919 and was praised by the late Pope Francis as a “doctor close to the weakest.”
Also from Venezuela, Maria Carmen Elena Rendiles Martinez will be canonized. She was born without a left arm but overcame her disability to establish the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus and is recognized as the country’s first female saint.
From Italy, the recognized nuns include Vincenza Maria Poloni, who founded Verona’s Institute of the Sisters of Mercy in the 19th century to care primarily for hospitalized patients, and Maria Troncatti of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. In the 1920s, Troncatti traveled to Ecuador to dedicate her life to serving indigenous communities.
Tens of thousands of pilgrims are anticipated to gather at the Vatican on Sunday for the canonization of an Italian teenager known as “God’s Influencer” due to his efforts in spreading the Catholic faith online.
Carlo Acutis, who passed away from leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15, is set to become the first millennial saint, with Pope Leo XIV presiding over the solemn ceremony in St. Peter’s Square.
His body, dressed casually in jeans and Nike sneakers, rests in a glass-topped tomb in Assisi, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Originally scheduled for April, the canonization ceremony was postponed due to the death of Pope Francis. It will mark Pope Leo XIV’s first sainthood ceremony.
Among the attendees, more than 800 people will travel from Assisi to Rome on a special train for the mass, which is set to begin at 10 a.m. (8 a.m. GMT). The event will also be broadcast on giant screens in Assisi, a historic city and religious pilgrimage site in central Italy’s Umbria region.
“Many will come in person or watch on television. Some have already traveled for April 27. I believe Carlo is grateful for their support,” said his mother, Antonia Salzano.
In a video shared by the Assisi diocese, she expressed that her son’s life exemplifies that “we are all called to be saints… everyone is unique.”
A large tapestry featuring a picture of Carlo was hung on the facade of St. Peter’s Basilica ahead of the ceremony.
Acutis, born in London in 1991 to Italian parents, was known for his devout faith, despite his parents not being particularly religious. He grew up in Milan, where he attended daily Mass and was remembered for his kindness, often helping bullied children and homeless individuals with food and sleeping bags.
A computer enthusiast, Acutis taught himself coding and used his skills to document Catholic miracles and teachings online.
Bishop Domenico Sorrentino of Assisi urged young people to emulate Acutis’s example, emphasizing the importance of positive role models in today’s world, where many are exposed to discouraging images and fleeting trends.
The Vatican has recognized Acutis for performing two miracles after his death—healed a Brazilian child with a rare pancreatic condition and aided a Costa Rican student seriously injured in an accident. Both families credited his intercession through prayer.
He was beatified in 2020 by Pope Francis, a step toward sainthood.
Digital Phablet – The renowned Emirati media personality and presenter, Anas Bukhash, shared his awe-inspiring story of narrowly escaping death after his vehicle was entirely engulfed in flames in a shocking and sudden incident.
Bukhash recounted the terrifying moments he faced, emphasizing that “divine intervention” and a mere technical malfunction were the reasons he survived.
He explained the incident to his followers through a video and photos posted on his official Instagram account, which garnered significant engagement from the public as well as colleagues in the media and entertainment industries.
“I sensed it was my car even before I saw it,” Bukhash wrote in his post, describing how the fire occurred in a highly unusual and random manner. After finishing filming and bidding farewell to his guests, he heard someone scream that a car was on fire. The oddest part was his initial feeling—he knew it was his vehicle before he could see it.
He added, “I calmly approached to confirm, and it indeed was my car.”
Initially hesitant to disclose details about the accident, Bukhash decided to share his experience to remind everyone that life includes both beautiful moments and difficult challenges. He expressed gratitude that a technical glitch in the recording process delayed them, which ultimately saved their lives.
“If the recording glitch hadn’t caused the delay, we would have been inside the car when the fire started,” he said. “Even a few more minutes would have made us sit right in the middle of it. Thank God this incident happened at this specific time, in this particular place, and in this way.”
He also mentioned that on-site construction workers played a crucial role in controlling the blaze initially, using fire extinguishers they had available. Bukhash feels fortunate that the fire occurred where help was nearby rather than while he was driving or near his home.
Concluding, Bukhash reassured his followers, “Thank God, we are safe and unharmed. I appreciate all the messages checking on me. Sorry if I couldn’t reply to some of you.”
He reflected on the incident, emphasizing that sometimes luck and small delays can be life-saving, and acknowledged that what happened has made him appreciate how fortunate he truly is.
