Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, hosted renowned actor Görkem Sevindik at his office after the actor was criticized by an Israeli minister for expressing support for the Palestinians. The minister emphasized his backing for Sevindik, best known for portraying Kadir in Eşref Rüya.

Ersoy praised Sevindik’s humanitarian stance, stating, “We stand by the compassionate position taken by our esteemed artist Görkem Sevindik.”

He reiterated: “We support the humanitarian stand of our esteemed artist Görkem Sevindik,” adding:

“We stand beside Görkem Sevindik’s humanitarian stance. Responding with threats to a call from the conscience of the world is completely unacceptable. This hateful language, which advocates the death penalty for Palestinians and targets those who oppose it, underscores Israel’s lawlessness to the world. Elevating our voices against ongoing oppression in Gaza is a moral obligation.”

Following this, Sevindik faced criticism in Israel for a social media post condemning a recent Israeli law that authorizes the execution of Palestinian prisoners. On social media, Sevindik shared his opposition to such measures, attributing his stance to moral principles.

While filming Eşref Rüya, Sevindik explained his position:

“As a person with a conscience and a father, I felt deep empathy for what I saw. I came across a video showing individuals sentenced to death being loaded onto a bus. I saw their final moments with their children, their last embraces. I reacted as a human — I opposed such cruelty.”

He stressed that moral individuals worldwide should oppose war, noting, “Our series is quite popular there, and I believe I am a well-liked character. My conscience compelled me to speak out, even if some fans were disappointed. It was an instinctive human reaction.”

Sevindik reaffirmed his stand on social media:

“I support my reaction. I oppose oppression everywhere. Every person with a conscience should oppose war.”

The controversy intensifies amid regional instability, with U.S. and Israeli actions impacting Gulf nations and ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon and against Palestinians. Recently, Israel’s Knesset approved legislation to ease the death penalty for Palestinians detained without trial, leaving thousands in West Bank prisons facing potential execution without appeals.

Sevindik’s post called on society to act:

“If humanity remains silent today, when will it act? If we fail to show our humanity now, when will we?”

He highlighted the gravity of the situation: “The approval has been given to execute 12,000 Palestinian prisoners. Of these, 4,000 are children.”

In response, Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released a video targeting Sevindik, stating, “Kadir in Eşref Rüya. You will never be Kadir Baba. We live in Israel. You act in a Turkish series. The death penalty for terrorists is now enacted.”

Görkem Sevindik, known for his role as Kadir Baba in Kanal D’s popular series Eşref Rüya, stirred up controversy in Israel with a social media post addressing Palestinian prisoners. Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician, criticized Sevindik. In an interview with CNN Türk, Sevindik stated, “As someone with a conscience, I am strongly opposed to such cruelty. As an artist and a father, I shared my feelings.”

Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict initiated by the U.S. and Israel against Iran continues to influence Gulf nations. Israel persists in its assaults on Lebanon and continues its brutal treatment of Palestinians—a situation worsened by the recent Israeli Parliament’s decision to pass a law easing the imposition of the death penalty on detained Palestinians.

    Israeli Parliament’s Decision

The Israeli legislative body, the Knesset, approved a law that simplifies the process of sentencing Palestinians to death if they’re unlawfully detained. This legislation puts thousands of Palestinians imprisoned in the West Bank at immediate risk of execution, with no options for pardon or appeal.

Görkem Sevindik did not stay silent in the face of this law.

He expressed concern about the approval of the execution of 12,000 Palestinian prisoners—4,000 of whom are children—and voiced his dismay on social media. Sevindik, who portrays “Kadir Baba” in Eşref Rüya, a series produced by TİMSBİ and broadcast on Kanal D on Wednesday evenings and highly popular among viewers, shared, “The execution of 12,000 Palestinian prisoners has been approved.”

Following his post, Israeli Security Minister Ben-Gvir threatened Sevindik’s character on the series, Kadir Baba, via Twitter, saying, “Kadir, you will never become a father in your entire life. You are just in a Turkish series…”

    When Will Humanity Rise?

Sevindik added, “Please don’t stay silent. If humanity doesn’t stand up today, then when? If we can’t demonstrate our human nature now, when will we? Please share this message. Stand against these executions.”

    Provocative Response and Rising Tensions

The veteran actor’s comments sparked significant reactions in Israel. Ben-Gvir responded with a video message, mocking Sevindik’s character and asserting, “Kadir from Eşref Rüya. You will never be Kadir Baba. We live in Israel. You may act in a Turkish series, but the death penalty is now in effect for terrorists.”

In reaction to these developments, many social media users supporting Israeli policies sent threatening messages to Sevindik and called for boycotting the series. Conversely, many Turkish digital media supporters stood with Sevindik in this heated debate.

Sevindik further addressed the controversy in an interview with CNN Türk’s İlayda Karaca, explaining, “While browsing social media, I came across a video of some condemned individuals being transported by bus. I saw the final moments they shared with their children—their last hugs and looks. As a person of conscience and a father, I felt compelled to react. I oppose such cruelty and wanted to express my feelings.”

He continued, “I stand by my reaction. Cruelty should be universally condemned. Every moral and conscientious person worldwide should oppose war. Our series is highly popular there—it’s beloved by many. I understand that my stance disappointed some viewers, but I believe every normal person should react this way.”

The controversy also extended to a provocative video response from Ben-Gvir, who ridiculed Sevindik’s character and reinforced the harsh realities faced by Palestinians under Israeli policies.

The widespread outrage and threats on social media prompted Sevindik to emphasize his empathy and moral stance, clarifying that his reaction was driven by a desire to stand against injustice and cruelty. He stressed the importance of raising awareness and urged everyone to voice opposition to such human rights violations.

    • Iranian minister calls Israeli documents a “treasure trove”.
    • States documents provide information on Israel’s nuclear sites.
    • No immediate response from Israel regarding Iran’s assertion.

DUBAI: Iranian Minister of Intelligence Esmail Khatib announced on state television on Sunday that sensitive Israeli documents recently obtained by Tehran will be revealed soon, categorizing them as a “treasure trove” that would enhance Iran’s offensive capabilities.

According to Iranian state media, intelligence agencies have accessed a significant collection of sensitive Israeli documents. Khatib indicated that these documents pertain to Israel’s nuclear facilities, as well as its relationships with the U.S., Europe, and other nations, along with its defensive capacities.

There has not been an immediate official comment from the Israeli government.

It remains uncertain if this information leak was connected to a previously reported cyberattack on an Israeli nuclear research facility last year, which Tehran is now disclosing amid rising tensions over its nuclear ambitions.

“Acquiring this treasure trove took time and required careful security protocols. While the methods of acquisition will remain confidential, the documents will be revealed shortly,” Khatib stated, adding that the volume of documents is substantial — “thousands of documents would be an understatement.”

In 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Israeli operatives had seized a massive “archive” of Iranian documents revealing Tehran’s more extensive nuclear work than previously acknowledged.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously threatened to conduct airstrikes against Iran if a nuclear agreement was not reached, but he reportedly obstructed an Israeli plan to strike Iranian nuclear sites in favor of pursuing negotiations with Tehran.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated on Wednesday that halting uranium enrichment is “100%” against Iran’s interests, disregarding a key demand from the U.S. in ongoing talks aimed at resolving a long-standing dispute over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

Western authorities assert that Iran is enriching uranium to a high degree of fissile purity, nearing the threshold suitable for atomic bomb fuel. However, Iran has consistently denied any intentions of pursuing nuclear weapons.

    • Yunus must stay in power for a smooth transition, says Faiz.
    • The resignation threat followed protests by the BNP against the interim government.
    • Minister Faiz warns military against interference in politics.

Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, “must remain” in his interim role to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power, stated a cabinet official and advisor on Friday.

The 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who assumed office after a major uprising last year, indicated he would resign if he did not receive support from political parties, according to sources close to him and his allies.

Since the student-led protests that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, the country has experienced significant political unrest, with numerous groups demonstrating in the streets over various issues.

“For the sake of Bangladesh and to ensure a smooth democratic transition, Professor Yunus needs to hold his position,” stated Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, a special assistant to Yunus and head of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, in a Facebook post.

“The Chief Adviser is not contemplating stepping down,” he added, emphasizing that Yunus does not seek power. He later deleted this post.

The political situation in Bangladesh intensified this week, with clashing parties taking to the streets in the capital, Dhaka, each presenting their own demands.

Yunus’s reported threat to resign surfaced after thousands of supporters from the influential Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gathered in Dhaka, taking to the streets against the interim government for the first time.

Yunus has committed to holding elections by June 2026 at the latest in the predominantly Muslim nation with a population of around 170 million people.

However, BNP supporters—considered strong contenders in the upcoming elections and the first since Hasina’s ouster—have insisted that he set a specific election date.

    ‘Chaotic Phase’

Reportedly, Yunus’s relationship with the military has strained as well.

Local media and military sources have indicated that army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman stated on Wednesday that elections should occur by December, warning that Bangladesh is currently experiencing a “chaotic phase” and conditions are deteriorating.

Taiyeb issued a warning to the military on Friday, asserting, “The army shouldn’t engage in politics.” He added, “In any civilized nation, the military doesn’t intervene in political matters,” criticizing the military chief’s remarks.

    ‘Excessive Restrictions’

The military played a pivotal role in ending Hasina’s administration by refraining from suppressing the uprising, which resulted in over 1,400 protester deaths due to police violence.

It was Waker-Uz-Zaman who announced Hasina’s ouster, leading to a brief military takeover before power was handed over to Yunus.

On Thursday, the army released a statement aimed at countering divisions between the military and the public, claiming, “Certain interested parties are spreading misinformation to incite discord between the army and the general populace.” The statement detailed the hundreds of individuals sheltered in military bases during the upheaval to protect them from extrajudicial killings.

Among those the army claimed to have sheltered were 24 political figures, numerous judges, civil servants, academics, and over 525 police officers.

No specifics were provided on those accused of attempting to undermine the military’s support.

The National Citizen Party (NCP), formed largely by the students at the forefront of the uprising against Hasina and affiliated with Yunus, has previously accused the military of backing Hasina’s Awami League party.

Sheikh Hasina, now 77, remains in self-imposed exile in India, defying an arrest warrant tied to allegations of crimes against humanity related to the police crackdown.

This month, the government banned the Awami League following protests outside Yunus’s residence, a move criticized by Human Rights Watch as “an excessive restriction on fundamental freedoms similar to the previous government’s oppressive measures.”

On Monday, the Indian Supreme Court scrutinized Madhya Pradesh BJP minister Kunwar Vijay Shah’s apology regarding his comments about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, suggesting it might be nothing more than “crocodile tears” intended to evade legal consequences.

Colonel Qureshi, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, was among the two officers who provided the media with a briefing on the military strategies involved in Operation Sindoor, as reported by Indian news sources.

The court, represented by Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, stated that they did not require the minister’s apology. “Your offensive remarks were made without any consideration… This apology is unnecessary,” the bench remarked, implying that it appeared to be an insincere attempt to sidestep legal accountability.

The court admonished the minister for his public conduct, emphasizing the importance of choosing his words carefully as a representative of the public.

“We have seen your videos; you were on the edge of using demeaning language,” the bench noted during the proceedings.

Furthermore, the Madhya Pradesh state police was instructed to form a special investigation team (SIT) to further examine the situation.

In a viral video clip from a public address, Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah had referred to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as “the sister of terrorists.” He stated, “We sent a sister of their own to teach a lesson to those who widowed our daughters,” alluding to Colonel Qureshi in the aftermath of India’s Operation Sindoor.

It is essential to realize that Operation Sindoor was executed by India against Pakistan following claims that Pakistan was involved in attacks in Pahalgam, a point that has yet to be substantiated. In response, Pakistan initiated Operation Bunyan um Marsoos against India after the latter’s actions.
