Squall: Completing the SeeD Mercenary Commander Deck for MTG

Squall, SeeD Mercenary is one of the iconic commanders available in Magic: The Gathering, introduced through its collaboration with the Final Fantasy series. As the lead character of Final Fantasy VIII, Squall is known for his solitary demeanor and the catchphrase “whatever.”

Reflecting his independent nature, Squall’s Magic card emphasizes the desire to attack solo. A deck built around Squall combines elements of a Voltron strategy—focusing on a single powerful creature—with control tactics leveraging Squall’s abilities.

This deck consists of 33 creatures, one sorcery, five instants, 18 artifacts, and 34 lands. Squall serves as your main offensive force, while other creatures help control the battlefield or enhance Squall’s power.

    Key Cards

    Squall, SeeD Mercenary

As the leader of the deck, Squall, SeeD Mercenary is pivotal. He grants double strike to any creature attacking alone, which is essential because each strike activates Squall’s other ability twice instead of once.

When Squall successfully deals damage (which is easy to achieve if you equip him with items that grant unblockability), you can return a permanent from your graveyard to the battlefield. This allows for repeated use of permanents that sacrifice themselves for value, forming the heart of the strategy.

Squall’s ability to grant double strike applies to any creature, but he can only return a permanent from the graveyard if he’s the one dealing combat damage.

    Idolized

It’s crucial to attach Idolized to Squall as quickly as possible for a significant stat boost each time he attacks alone. At minimum, Idolized provides a +2/+2 enhancement, growing stronger as the game progresses.

One drawback of Auras in Voltron decks is that if the creature is removed, the Aura is lost. However, with Squall, you can retrieve Idolized from the graveyard and reattach it to him once you start attacking again.

    Lurrus of the Dream-Den

MTG Lurrus of the Dream-Den card with the art in the background.

Lurrus of the Dream-Den serves as a backup commander, providing a similar function to Squall but without needing to attack. Lurrus allows you to cast any permanent spell that costs two or less mana from your graveyard.

Cards cast with Lurrus aren’t exiled, so you can easily recast any spells used with him on your next turn, as long as they remain in the graveyard.

Lurrus is invaluable for recycling useful cards, especially those that let you search your library for additional cards. Although you can only use Lurrus’ ability once each turn, it pairs beautifully with Squall’s ability to reuse a card multiple times in a single turn.

    Sublime Archangel

Exalted is a crucial keyword for this deck. It provides a creature that attacks alone with a +1/+1 boost for each instance of exalted on the battlefield. For example, if four permanents have exalted, attacking alone grants +4/+4 to that creature’s stats.

Sublime Archangel is the premier card for granting exalted, as it distributes this ability to every creature. Notably, if a creature possesses multiple exalted instances, they all trigger as if they were separate cards, significantly enhancing your lone attacker and sometimes enabling a single attack to eliminate an opponent.

    How to Play the Deck

A Squall, SeeD Mercenary Commander deck seeks to attack with just Squall, triggering exalted abilities and dealing damage to recycle your best permanents from the graveyard. This provides the freedom to sacrifice creatures without worry, as Squall can bring them back.

The main strategy for controlling the battlefield involves using creatures that force opponents to sacrifice permanents upon entering the battlefield. Cards like Accursed Marauder, Fleshbag Marauder, and Merciless Executioner achieve this and have a mana cost of three or less, allowing Squall to return them to the battlefield for repeated sacrifice effects.

When you bring in creatures that force sacrifice, it’s often best to sacrifice them immediately. Once their effects resolve, they typically don’t contribute much on the battlefield and are better off in the graveyard for Squall to reanimate.

Instead of traditional removal spells, this deck focuses on permanents that can eliminate troublesome permanents. Thanks to Squall’s recursion ability, Seal of Doom and Grim Bauble become particularly potent, providing targeted removal while your forced sacrifice creatures clear out lesser threats.

It’s essential to equip Squall with items that make him unblockable, such as Brotherhood Regalia and Psychic Paper. This makes it easier to connect for damage and reduces the likelihood of losing Squall during combat.

For commander damage to eliminate an opponent, a commander must deal 21 or more damage to them. This is easily achieved with Squall due to his double strike ability combined with all the exalted triggers.

The primary victory condition of the deck is combat-based. Although you typically attack with just one creature, Squall poses a significant threat with his abilities. You’re likely to reduce opponents’ life totals through commander damage rather than bringing them to zero health.

The deck’s main weakness lies in its dependence on Squall. If he’s removed, your effectiveness significantly diminishes. This is an inherent risk of building a Voltron deck. Fortunately, there are many Equipment options available that enhance Squall’s durability, making him harder to eliminate. If you find yourself without access to Squall, rely on your suite of control cards to stall your opponents until you can get him into play.

  • Ultimate Mercenary Class Guide for Path of Exile 2

Ultimate Mercenary Class Guide for Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 features a variety of classes, each with distinct playstyles and abilities. Among these, the Mercenary stands out as a crossbow-wielding freelancer who is ready to take on any challenge for the right price.

What sets the Mercenary apart is the unique ability to switch between multiple types of ammunition, providing a versatile approach to different combat scenarios. In this overview, we’ll delve into the Mercenary class, highlighting its gameplay mechanics, skills, and Ascendancy Classes.

    Mercenary Class Overview

The Mercenary is a hybrid class combining Strength and Dexterity, utilizing a crossbow to maintain distance from adversaries. With a diverse range of ammunition options, the Mercenary can quickly adapt to various enemies and situations. Compared to other long-range users, the Mercenary’s unique ammo system makes it a compelling choice.

In addition to crossbow skills, the Mercenary can deploy grenades with different effects—Explosive Grenades inflict fire damage, Flash Grenades disorient foes, Voltaic Grenades unleash lightning damage, and more.

If you want a class that offers mobility, versatility, and excels at ranged damage, the Mercenary is a solid pick.

    Mercenary Ascendancy Classes

The Mercenary has two unique Ascendancy Classes: Witch Hunter and Gemling Legionnaire. Each offers a distinctive playstyle that can significantly alter how you approach combat.

    Witch Hunter

The Witch Hunter focuses on a mix of offensive, defensive, and utility skills, turning the Mercenary into a formidable combatant. Key abilities include:

    • Culling Strike: Instantly kills enemies once they drop to a specific health threshold—30% for normal enemies, 20% for magical ones, and 5% for rare and unique foes.
    • Decimating Strike: Unleashes powerful attacks against enemies at full health, removing up to 30% of their life with each hit.
    • Concentration: This mechanic diminishes an enemy’s Cooldown Recovery Rate based on their current health, rendering bosses less formidable during fights.

The Sorcery Ward provides a defending barrier against elemental damage while sacrificing 50% of the Mercenary’s Armor and Evasion. It’s a strategic trade-off that requires you to enhance your defensive stats to maximize the effectiveness of this ability.

With skills like Zealous Inquisition, there’s a chance for enemies to explode upon death, causing substantial damage to others nearby—useful for clearing mobs quickly.

In summary, the Witch Hunter enhances the Mercenary’s toolkit without demanding extensive game knowledge, allowing for effective damage boosts and stronger survivability.

    Gemling Legionnaire

The Gemling Legionnaire takes a more strategic approach, focusing on optimizing Skill Gems. Some noteworthy features include:

    • Adaptive Capability: This Notable allows you to meet the Attribute Requirements of your Gems based on your highest Attribute, enabling you to specialize in one instead of spreading points across multiple stats.
    • Enhanced Effectiveness: This doubles the benefits gained from your Attributes, making it crucial to focus on maximizing them.
    • Gem Studded: Allows the use of two copies of the same Support Gem across various Skills, giving you flexibility in your build.

While the Gemling Legionnaire can provide impressive boosts to skills, it demands a deeper understanding of the game’s mechanics and how to leverage those teachable moments effectively.

    Conclusion

Ultimately, both Ascendancy Classes provide unique avenues to explore with the Mercenary. The Witch Hunter is ideal for players seeking straightforward offensive power with built-in defensive measures, while the Gemling Legionnaire rewards knowledgeable players with depth and flexibility in build crafting. Choose wisely based on your preferred playstyle!

  • Ranking Every Mercenary in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred

Ranking Every Mercenary in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred

In the first expansion of Diablo 4, titled “Vessel of Hatred,” players can recruit Mercenaries to aid them in their journeys throughout Nahantu and beyond. There are four distinct Mercenaries available for recruitment via the Den, each possessing unique abilities that enhance gameplay.

You can take one Mercenary and one Reinforcement into your adventures. Your chosen Mercenary will actively fight alongside you, while the Reinforcement will only join in under specific conditions. Below, we’ve evaluated each Mercenary from least to most effective based on their performance in combat.

    ### 4. Aldkin

Aldkin is designed with an intriguing look, yet unfortunately, he’s the least effective Mercenary option. His main drawback is a passive ability that randomly turns him into a demon for 22 seconds. While in this form, both you and nearby foes become vulnerable, and dealing damage depletes your resources over three seconds. This can be a significant setback, as running out of resources can hinder your performance.

Though he has potential with his Flame Surge skills, his damage output becomes less impressive in higher Torment levels compared to your own. In addition, while he does offer some utility through debuffs like Daze and Stun, other Mercenaries provide even better utility options.

    ### 3. Varyana

Varyana shines when it comes to boosting mobility. Her primary Perk enhances your movement speed based on your kill streak, stacking up to 100 times for a maximum 20% speed increase. This bonus is highly beneficial for low-mobility builds, though classes with inherent speed will find it slightly less impactful.

Her skills include inflicting Bleed damage, enhancing Attack Speed, and debuffing foes. However, her overall damage output remains minimal in any of her skill trees, making her utility the main attraction. She’s a solid choice if your build lacks mobility or speed-enhancing skills.

    ### 2. Subo

Subo stands out with his ability to mark nearby enemies and resources on the minimap, aiding visibility during chaotic encounters. His “Seeker” ability marks an enemy every 20 seconds, with a successful kill restoring some resources and refreshing the Seeker cooldown.

While he offers good utility akin to Varyana, his added capability of marking targets gives him an edge in locating enemies during Helltide events and other areas. Plus, his combat support includes slowing, knocking down enemies, and boosting damage over time effects, which can suit builds focused on Poison or Bleed.

    ### 1. Raheir

Raheir is the first Mercenary you’ll unlock and undoubtedly the strongest. He excels in damage reduction abilities that come into play during perilous situations. His core Perk, “Valiance,” negates damage that would otherwise be lethal, allowing him to control the battlefield effectively by knocking down enemies and rendering you invulnerable for a brief period.

His skills are a mix of support effects, including taunts and debuffs that both protect and empower your character. Overall, the utility Raheir provides sets him apart, making him the best choice for any player seeking a reliable companion in Diablo 4.
