A targeted drone assault lasting nine minutes by Russia on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulted in six fatalities and injuries to 64 people, including nine children, according to Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday, as reported by Reuters.

This nighttime strike followed Russia’s two most significant air attacks on Ukraine this week, part of a broader escalation that Moscow claims is in retaliation for recent Ukrainian offensives within Russian territory.

In addition, two regions in southern Ukraine, Mykolaiv and Kherson, experienced power outages on Wednesday following assaults by Russian forces on energy infrastructure, as reported by the regional governors.

Kharkiv, situated in northeastern Ukraine, successfully resisted Russia’s initial assault at the onset of the war but has since faced a constant barrage of drone, missile, and precision airstrike attacks.

Local prosecutors reported via the Telegram messaging app that the death toll had climbed to six as rescue teams recovered bodies from the debris, with three individuals still presumed trapped.

The sustained barrage of 17 drones in Kharkiv ignited fires in 15 units of a five-story apartment complex and caused additional destruction in the city near the Russian border, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

“Direct hits occurred on residential buildings, private properties, playgrounds, and public transport facilities,” Terekhov stated on Telegram.

President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked on Telegram, “Each new day reveals fresh despicable attacks from Russia. With every strike against civilian life, it becomes evident that international pressure is insufficient.”

Witnesses from Reuters reported emergency responders assisting individuals from damaged structures and providing medical assistance, while firefighters fought blazes in the darkness.

Among the injured were a 2-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy who required hospitalization, as stated by Oleh Sinehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region via Telegram.

The Ukrainian military reported that, during this period, Russia launched 85 drones, with 40 being intercepted.

    Power Outages

In the Kherson region, utility workers are making efforts to restore electricity after Russian forces attacked what Governor Oleksandr Prokudin described as “a vital energy facility.”

“At this time, it is impossible to estimate how long restoration will take. Residents should be prepared for prolonged outages,” he communicated via Telegram.

Governor Vitaliy Kim of the neighboring Mykolaiv region noted that his area is also undergoing emergency power shutdowns, but services would be reestablished shortly.

Kherson directly borders a conflict zone and faces frequent drone, missile, and artillery strikes, while Mykolaiv primarily contends with missile and drone attacks.

There has been no immediate response from Russia regarding these latest overnight strikes.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict that Russia initiated against its smaller neighbor in February 2022. However, thousands of civilian casualties, overwhelmingly Ukrainian, have been reported.

Several apartments in a five-story building located in the Slobidskyi district caught fire, while multiple houses in the Osnovyansky district were struck as well. Terekhov also indicated that it’s possible there are individuals trapped beneath the debris.

Despite calls from the United States to cease its three-year-long invasion, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine. Recent diplomatic talks in Turkey did not produce any significant progress, as Moscow dismissed proposals for an unconditional ceasefire.

Title: Recent Strikes in Kharkiv Amid Ongoing Conflict

In a recent escalation, Russian missile and drone attacks on Kharkiv, Ukraine, overnight resulted in at least three fatalities and left 22 others injured. In a related incident, a Ukrainian drone strike in the Moscow region caused injuries to two individuals, according to officials from both nations on Saturday.

The Russian military reported they utilized precision long-range weaponry and drones to successfully target specific military installations within Ukraine during the night.

Meanwhile, Ukraine refuted claims made by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, who alleged that Ukraine had indefinitely postponed the repatriation of deceased soldiers and the exchange of prisoners of war. Andriy Kovalenko, a member of the National Security and Defence Council, remarked on Telegram, "The statements from the Russian side do not align with reality or our prior agreements regarding both prisoner exchanges and the return of bodies."

In their latest peace talks held in Istanbul earlier this week, both sides agreed to exchange additional prisoners and work towards the repatriation of 12,000 deceased soldiers.

Kharkiv, situated just a few dozen kilometers from the Russian border, has been frequently targeted throughout the protracted conflict arising from Russia’s large-scale invasion. "The city is currently facing the most intense bombardment since the beginning of the full-scale war," declared Mayor Ihor Terekhov in a Telegram post on Saturday.

The attacks have impacted residential buildings, schools, and other infrastructure. Images from the scene revealed structures severely damaged, and rescue teams were seen evacuating the wounded.

Governor Oleh Syniehubov of Kharkiv stated that there may still be individuals trapped beneath the rubble due to a civilian industrial site being struck by a barrage of 40 drones and several bombs.

On the Russian side, two injuries were reported following a Ukrainian drone assault in the Moscow region. Governor Andrei Vorobyov mentioned that authorities had shot down nine drones during the incident.

Russia’s aviation agency has since resumed operations at Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports in the Moscow area after temporary suspensions for safety protocols.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that overnight air defense teams intercepted and destroyed 36 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, including the Moscow region.

On Saturday morning, Ukraine’s military announced the downing of a Russian Su-35 fighter jet, although specific details were not provided. Russian forces have yet to issue a statement on this claim, and Reuters was unable to verify the report independently.

Additionally, a recent Ukrainian drone strike deep within Russian territory reportedly compromised about 10% of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet, with some aircraft affected as they were being primed for strikes on Ukraine, as disclosed by a senior German military official during a YouTube podcast scheduled for release later today.
