IPhone 18 Pro May Undergo Major Design Change

Recent reports indicate that the release timeline for the iPhone 18 might come with significant changes. According to a source from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the models iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are testing the implementation of under-screen Face ID technology. This shift could lead to the presence of a minimal front-facing camera positioned in the top-left corner of the display.

“I confirmed with contacts within Apple’s supply chain recently. The iPhone 18/18 Pro Max is indeed experimenting with a 3D facial recognition system under the display, featuring a single HIAA hole, while the iPhone 18e employs a standard 2+1 hole design,” the leaker stated (translated from Chinese).

Although this news remains unverified, such a transition would be surprising. Apple has always emphasized the pixel density of its screens, which poses a challenge for an under-screen Face ID system. This technology relies on projecting thousands of infrared dots to create a precise topographical map of a user’s face. While a standard front camera captures this mapping efficiently, OLED displays, like those anticipated in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, can obstruct and scatter infrared light.

For Apple to implement under-screen Face ID successfully, the company must ensure that the infrared light can pass through the OLED panels without compromising display quality. This is likely a significant factor in why the upcoming iPhone 18 series will include this technology, rather than the already announced iPhone 17, as it necessitates careful development and extensive testing.

The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models are expected to continue using the traditional approach, with front-facing sensors integrated into the Dynamic Island. These models are scheduled for release in the spring of 2027, following the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, reflecting a new product launch strategy.

The iPhone 18 launch will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone, and Apple appears poised to introduce noteworthy changes. Moreover, a foldable iPhone may debut around the same time, contributing to the reasoning behind this altered release schedule.

For many of us, our iPhones serve as the go-to devices for staying updated on the latest news, engaging with friends online, and documenting special moments through photography.

A notable camera advancement is expected for the iPhone Pro series, though it won’t be seen in the current iPhone 16 Pro or the soon-to-be-released iPhone 17 Pro models. Instead, the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to debut a main rear camera equipped with a variable aperture for the first time. This insight comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who provided the information via Medium.

A variable aperture enables users to adjust the size of the lens opening on the iPhone, much like what can be done with a DSLR camera. This feature grants more control over the light entering the camera sensor, influencing the depth of field in photographs. With a variable aperture, users can alternate between different f-stops, allowing for adaptability in various shooting scenarios. This means you can explore your creativity and achieve the specific look you desire in your photos.

Most smartphones do not offer variable aperture technology. However, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and its predecessor, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, both include this feature. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus had a similar system, but it relied on older technology. Currently, Samsung’s latest offerings, like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, do not feature variable aperture capabilities.

Kuo predicts that Apple will collaborate with Sunny Optical from China and Taiwan’s Largan Precision to supply its variable aperture lenses.

Reflecting on the iPhone 14 Pro series, the principal cameras on Apple’s flagship devices have utilized a fixed aperture of ƒ/1.78. We can likely expect a continuation of this trend in the iPhone 17 Pro series, anticipated to launch in September, while the iPhone 18 series is projected for release in 2026.

Since the debut of the first iPhone in 2007, Apple has made consistent enhancements to the camera in its most popular product. A major upgrade could be on the horizon within the next two years.
