Google commits $15bn to India’s largest AI data center investment

Google plans to spend $15 billion over five years to establish an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, India, marking its largest investment in the country to date. This move comes as part of a broader initiative, with Google allocating approximately $85 billion this year to expand data center infrastructure worldwide, aiming to meet the surging demand for AI services.

“Our new AI hub will be the biggest we’ve built outside the U.S.,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, during a recent event in New Delhi. He emphasized that the investment will be distributed over the next five years and that this facility is part of a global network of AI centers spanning 12 countries.

The initial phase of the data center in Visakhapatnam will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt but is planned to eventually scale to several gigawatts, Kurian added. Earlier estimates by local officials placed the investment at $10 billion, with the project expected to create around 188,000 jobs.

Major tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon have already committed billions to developing data centers in India, a key growth market where nearly a billion people access the internet. Additionally, Indian billionaires Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani have announced investments geared toward enhancing the nation’s data infrastructure.

AI’s massive computational requirements are driving demand for advanced data centers capable of linking thousands of chips in powerful clusters. Google recognizes India as a vital growth area, with its YouTube service boasting the highest number of users and Android powering the majority of smartphones.

Despite its growth trajectory, Google faces regulatory hurdles in India, including antitrust investigations and a lawsuit from Bollywood figures challenging its AI policies on YouTube.

  • Trump Unveils $200 Billion Agreements with UAE

Trump Unveils $200 Billion Agreements with UAE

Trump Announces Over $200 Billion in Deals During UAE Visit

ABU DHABI: During his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed more than $200 billion in agreements covering various sectors such as technology, aviation, energy, and artificial intelligence.

Following his meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the White House confirmed several major deals, including a substantial $14.5 billion investment commitment from Etihad Airways for 28 Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft, powered by engines from GE Aerospace.

Moreover, the U.S. Commerce Department stated that the two nations would form a framework for a U.S.-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership. Trump and Sheikh Mohamed were also present for the announcement of a new 5GW AI campus, projected to be the largest of its kind outside the U.S.

Reports indicate that the agreements will provide the UAE with increased access to advanced artificial intelligence chips from the U.S., following previous restrictions aimed at preventing China from gaining access to these technologies.

Trump’s visit to the UAE is part of a tour of affluent Gulf states, which also included a $10 billion Qatari investment in a U.S. military facility during his stop in Doha.

"I have no doubt that our relationship will only grow stronger," Trump said in a meeting with Sheikh Mohamed. He referenced a recent discussion with Sheikh Mohamed’s brother, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who had talked about the UAE’s pledge to invest $1.4 trillion in the U.S. over the next decade.

Upon his arrival, Trump was welcomed at the Abu Dhabi airport by Sheikh Mohamed, and together they visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, famously known for its stunning white minarets and domes bathed in the late-afternoon sunlight.

"It is absolutely beautiful," Trump remarked to reporters inside the mosque, which he noted had been closed for the occasion. "It’s honoring the United States, which is a wonderful tribute," he added.

    Major Agreements

A White House fact sheet disclosed that Trump secured $200 billion in new U.S.-UAE agreements and fast-tracked the $1.4 trillion investment initiative. Among key projects mentioned, Emirates Global Aluminium will undertake a $4 billion primary aluminum smelter project in Oklahoma, while ExxonMobil and other energy companies will collaborate with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, focusing on expanded oil and natural gas production valued at $60 billion.

During the discussions, Sheikh Mohamed expressed the UAE’s desire to strengthen its friendship with the U.S., stating, "Your presence here today confirms that this eagerness is mutual."

Before embarking on his UAE visit, Trump addressed U.S. troops at Al Udeid Air Base near Doha, highlighting a defense deal with Qatar worth $42 billion.

The UAE aims to position itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence. A preliminary agreement allows the country to import 500,000 of Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI chips annually, beginning this year, according to Reuters. This deal is expected to accelerate the establishment of essential data centers for AI model development, though it poses national security concerns for the U.S. government.

The AI agreement also entails UAE commitments to invest in and build data centers in the U.S. that match or exceed their own capabilities. Furthermore, it includes historic agreements for the UAE to align its national security regulations with those of the U.S., aimed at preventing the diversion of American technology.

The previous administration under President Joe Biden had imposed stringent regulations on AI chip exports to the Middle East, primarily out of concern that these semiconductors might be diverted to strengthen China’s military.

At the UAE presidential palace, Trump and Sheikh Mohamed were seen discussing further developments with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

While Trump indicated plans to return to Washington on Friday after a regional trip that began Tuesday, he suggested the itinerary was still "almost a destination unknown," mentioning a potential stop in Istanbul for discussions on Ukraine.

    Diplomacy and Business Agreements

During his four-day visit to the Gulf region, several significant business agreements were also finalized, including a deal for Qatar Airways to purchase up to 210 Boeing widebody aircraft, a commitment from Saudi Arabia to invest $600 billion in the U.S., and $142 billion in arms sales to the kingdom.

This trip has not only been focused on business but has also fostered various diplomatic negotiations. In Qatar, Trump mentioned that the United States was nearing a nuclear agreement with Iran, stating that Tehran had "sort of" agreed to the terms.

Additionally, he announced the lifting of longstanding sanctions on Syria and met with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, encouraging him to establish ties with Israel, Syria’s historical adversary.

Improving relations with Gulf states has been a key objective for Trump’s administration. If the proposed AI chip agreements with the UAE are finalized, the Gulf region could emerge as a significant center for AI, alongside the United States and China.

In summary, Trump’s visit to the UAE marks a notable step in strengthening ties with Gulf nations, manifesting through ambitious agreements aimed at fostering technological and economic collaboration.
