Eliminating the Shadow Curse in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2

Advancing in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 can often feel like an uphill challenge. However, your perseverance will reward you, as the more you progress, the more enjoyable the experience becomes. A particularly intriguing aspect is the Shadow Curse; while it might seem like just another hurdle, it actually comes with some benefits.

This mechanic encourages you to think creatively about your character build. You won’t encounter it until you’ve invested several hours into the game, so for those confused by the ominous dark blob you keep encountering, here’s a guide on Shadow Curse in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 and tips on how to lift it.

    What is Shadow Curse?

You won’t need to worry about Shadow Curse until you’re about halfway through the game, typically when you first enter the Dungeons. Essentially, the curse is a debuff that affects certain items from a specific merchant that resembles a floating dark orb.

This debuff shows up in your stats as Shadow Curse, lowering your armor. If you’re already feeling fragile or using a glass cannon build, this can lead to complications.

Heroes Of Hammerwatch 2: Items with the shadow cursed level applied to them.

To acquire the Shadow Curse, all you need to do is buy an item from the dark swirling merchant. However, this is entirely optional. The curse stacks, and each item has a different value based on your level. The more stacks of Shadow Curse you have, the more armor you lose, which means you’ll take higher damage from enemies.

    How to Remove Shadow Curse

If you find yourself cursed, don’t panic! There are simple ways to lift it. First, you’ll need access to the Courts and then search for a Pyre Room.

Look for purple candles scattered throughout the room. If you have a modifier that reveals the Dark Citadel map, you’ll find one easily. Approach the Pyre and interact with it. This will ignite the mound and randomly remove a portion of your Shadow Curse stacks.

Heroes Of Hammerwatch 2: Shadow curse stacks removed by a pyre.

Keep in mind, there’s no guarantee you’ll fully remove the curse, especially if you have a lot of stacks. However, if you approach with fewer Shadow Curse stacks, the chances are in your favor.

Typically, Pyres remove half of your stacks and at least eight. If you have fewer than eight, you’ll clear every time you use a Pyre.

Pyres spawn one mound per level in random locations, and there’s no guarantee you’ll encounter one in every run. However, if you unlock the Architect and pay him a small fee, it ensures at least one Pyre per run.

    The Benefits of Shadow Curse

Heroes Of Hammerwatch 2: A pyre before it has been set alight.

If you’re questioning why anyone would want to retain their Shadow Curse until the end of their run, here’s an interesting fact: this pesky debuff can actually provide significant benefits. Certain builds or weapons can increase your power dramatically.

This occurs in two ways. First, some weapons gain strength based on your Shadow Curse level, meaning more curse leads to higher damage. Second, some classes thrive without relying on armor, such as Rangers, Rogues, Wizards, and Warlocks.

Heroes Of Hammerwatch 2: Multiple large damaging spells cast by the Wizard.

Players who can maintain distance from enemies can benefit significantly from increased power, while those who engage directly in melee will have to consider their approach more carefully. So, it becomes a question: Is it better to remove the curse now or accept the armor loss for the damage advantage?

This is an engaging mechanic worth exploring, as it can often lead to favorable outcomes in the long run.

  • Unlocking the Dark Citadel in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2

Unlocking the Dark Citadel in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2

Your adventures in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 will take you to various places, starting in the quiet forest and eventually reaching the expansive Dark Citadel. Although there’s an entrance to the Dark Citadel in the first area, you can’t access it right away; you need to complete some tasks first.

The Dark Citadel is the central location you will explore throughout the game, typically in a linear fashion from start to finish. If you’re looking to unlock the entrance and bypass some challenges, here’s what you need to do.

How to Access the Dark Citadel Entrance

You can find the entrance to the Dark Citadel in the initial level of a new run, known as Forest 1. If you search the area carefully, you will encounter the locked entrance to the Dark Citadel. However, to unlock it, you’ll need to make your way to Crypt 1.

To reach the Crypt, follow this path: Forest 1, Forest 2, Dark Caves 1, Dark Caves 2, Forest 3, Temple, Crypt 1.

Once you arrive at the Crypt, you might encounter the Architect in a spacious room filled with ice turrets and various foes. Defeat the enemies, and then engage with the Architect, who will return to your town.

Next, head back to town and upgrade the Architect for 25 stone and 25 magic crystals at the Guild Hall. This upgrade allows you to utilize the Architect’s features, such as automatically revealing the map, lowering enemy counts, disabling traps, and more.

With this upgrade, you can now access the Dark Citadel through its main entrance. Start a new run and explore Forest 1 until you find the Dark Citadel, then speak to the Architect waiting outside. He will unlock the door and grant you entry.

    Activities in the Dark Citadel

Once inside the Dark Citadel, you’ll discover multiple candles and a switch located in the center. Light the candles and then activate the switch. Waves of shades will attack you. Once you defeat them, a red portal will appear that leads you deeper into the Dark Citadel, specifically to the level corresponding to the number of candles you’ve lit.

A new candle will unlock after you defeat each boss.

Essentially, the Dark Citadel functions as a significant shortcut system that tests your abilities by challenging you to battle waves of powerful shades. Successfully completing the challenge allows you to skip many sections of your run and instantly progress further into the dungeon.

  • Ranking Every Class from Worst to Best in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2

Ranking Every Class from Worst to Best in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2

Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 features seven unique character classes, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Overall, these classes are well-balanced, allowing players to choose any class as they advance through New Game Plus and beyond.

Thanks to the Guild Title system, you’ll be encouraged to explore each class to earn permanent stat bonuses. Still, it’s a good idea to identify one class to focus on as your primary character. If you’re curious about which class stands out, you’ve come to the right place. Just keep in mind that every class can be effective during New Game Plus, so we ultimately suggest picking the one that you enjoy the most.

    Rogue

    Recommended Mastery: Demolitions

The Rogue excels as a fast, melee combatant who can swiftly dart in and out of battle, taking down groups of enemies before retreating. Despite being listed last, the Rogue remains a formidable choice, especially with the proper setup. However, some of its Class Mastery options, like Poison and Blades, may seem less exciting or limit the class’s versatility. On the other hand, the Demolitions mastery significantly boosts the Rogue’s area-of-effect damage.

    Ranger

    Recommended Mastery: Beastmaster

The Ranger is the quintessential long-range fighter, striking from a distance with volleys of arrows while skillfully evading enemy attacks. While the Ranger is solid overall, it falls short in Class Mastery options and overall damage output. Beastmaster is the standout Mastery here, making gameplay more enjoyable. This class is particularly good for players who prefer to kite enemies, picking them off one at a time.

    Warrior

    Recommended Mastery: Berserker

The Warrior offers straightforward gameplay, focusing on hitting enemies with physical attacks. All three Class Masteries bring exciting depth: the Berserker enhances mobility with Leap, the Primalist allows for summoning totems, and the Tyrant improves area-of-effect attacks. While Berserker may be the most powerful option, the Warrior is a reliable choice regardless of Mastery, allowing you to customize your approach with various weapons thanks to its high Strength stat.

    Wizard

    Recommended Mastery: Evocation

The Wizard is a ranged spellcaster skilled in all elemental types and equipped with a defensive Barrier ability. Compared to the Sorcerer, the Wizard offers slightly better survivability at the expense of some damage. The Class Masteries are particularly engaging; Conjuration lets you summon powerful allies, Transmutation grants impressive stat bonuses, and Evocation allows for dramatic meteoric strikes across the battlefield.

    Sorcerer

    Recommended Mastery: Lightning

Unlike the Wizard, the Sorcerer shines in offense. With Class Masteries that specialize in Fire, Ice, or Lightning damage, you can achieve incredible synergy by sticking to one elemental type. While this may limit build planning, the effectiveness speaks for itself. The Sorcerer excels at decimating groups of enemies, especially with the Lightning Mastery, which delivers outstanding burst damage.

    Warlock

    Recommended Mastery: Souls

The Warlock blends melee attacks and spellcasting. By defeating foes, the Warlock generates Essence for improved survivability and wields Dark Ritual for area damage. Players have various build options across three compelling Class Masteries. Summoning Mastery focuses on using pets, Soul Mastery bolsters the Warlock’s core abilities with high AoE damage potential, while Chaos Mastery introduces fun mechanics involving damaging energy rifts.

    Paladin

    Recommended Mastery: Radiance

The Paladin stands out as both a fantastic starting class and a strong choice in New Game Plus. Its Lay on Hands ability ensures effective healing, while its Class Masteries provide significant utility and damage potential. The Radiance Mastery is particularly noteworthy, offering a wide area-of-effect fire attack that helps the Paladin handle groups more efficiently, turning it into one of the strongest options in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2.
