How Childhood Drinks May Impact Adult Blood Pressure

Children’s eating and drinking habits during childhood might influence their heart health well into adulthood, according to a new extensive study. Researchers discovered that individuals who frequently consumed sugary beverages while young had a higher likelihood of developing high blood pressure later in life. Conversely, choosing whole fruits appeared to reduce that risk.

The study, published in Circulation and conducted by researchers from the University of Toronto and other institutions, tracked thousands of children over several decades as they grew into adults. This makes it one of the longest studies to explore the connection between childhood sugar intake and blood pressure in later years.

High blood pressure, often called the “silent killer,” affects millions globally. It usually shows no symptoms until it causes severe damage to the heart, brain, kidneys, or blood vessels if left untreated.

Participants—more than 25,700 in total—entered the study between ages 9 and 16. Over the following 25 years, they completed multiple food questionnaires detailing their intake of sugary drinks, fruit juices, water, milk, and whole fruits.

When analyzing the data, researchers found a clear trend: frequent consumption of sugary drinks was associated with a higher risk of developing hypertension, even after considering factors such as overall diet quality, exercise habits, smoking, and body weight. Interestingly, larger intakes of fruit juice, often seen as a healthy beverage, also correlated with increased blood pressure risk. The findings suggest that moderation is key, and that whole fruits are a healthier choice.

Modeling potential dietary changes showed that swapping one sugary drink daily for water, milk, or whole fruit was linked to a reduced risk of high blood pressure. Replacing fruit juice with whole fruit also seemed beneficial, emphasizing that the way sugar is consumed matters—whole fruits provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that support overall health. In contrast, juice lacks much of this fiber, leading to quicker absorption of natural sugars into the bloodstream.

The researchers noted that while the study’s findings are significant, they do not establish direct causation—since the data is based on self-reported questionnaires and diagnoses. However, the long duration and large sample size strengthen the evidence supporting healthier beverage choices in childhood for long-term cardiovascular health.

This long-term research underscores that regularly drinking sugary drinks as a child may increase the risk of high blood pressure in adulthood, while replacing them with whole fruits could be a healthier alternative. Although the study is observational, and causality cannot be definitively proven, the results align with existing dietary recommendations to cut back on sugary beverages and promote fruit consumption.

For individuals concerned about blood pressure, it’s advisable to review studies on blood pressure medications associated with risks like sudden cardiac arrest, as well as teas that might help lower high blood pressure. Additionally, recent research highlights nutrients and antioxidants that could significantly reduce high blood pressure and potentially reverse aging of blood vessels by up to 20 years.

  • How Including Bananas in Berry Smoothies Might Lower Their Benefits

How Including Bananas in Berry Smoothies Might Lower Their Benefits

    Credit: Unsplash+

Smoothies rank among the most popular healthy beverages worldwide. Many people prepare them at home because they’re quick, flavorful, and a simple way to boost fruit intake.

Typically, a smoothie recipe features bananas, berries, yogurt, and other nutritious components blended into a creamy drink.

Recently, researchers from the University of California, Davis, uncovered that one common smoothie ingredient might quietly lower the amount of beneficial plant compounds your body can absorb.

The study, published in the journal Food & Function of the Royal Society of Chemistry, revealed that bananas could interfere with the body’s ability to absorb flavanols, vital natural substances associated with cardiovascular and brain health.

Flavanols are plant-derived nutrients found abundantly in fruits like berries, grapes, apples, and in foods such as cocoa, pears, and tea. Scientists have long explored their potential to enhance blood circulation, support healthy blood pressure, and protect brain and heart functions.

Health authorities like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommend that adults aim for about 400 to 600 milligrams of flavanols daily for metabolic health. Many try to increase their intake through berries or smoothies rich in antioxidants.

The issue isn’t with the berries themselves; rather, it’s about interactions that happen when different foods are blended together.

The scientists focused on an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO), naturally present in many fruits and vegetables. PPO is responsible for the browning seen after cutting an apple or peeling a banana.

Once exposed to air, PPO reacts with plant compounds, causing browning.

Bananas, which have high PPO activity, prompted researchers to investigate whether this enzyme might also impact flavanols within smoothies.

To explore this, they created smoothies with fruits that had varying levels of PPO. Bananas represented high-PPO ingredients, while mixed berries served as low-PPO options.

Participants consumed three different formulations: a banana smoothie, a mixed berry smoothie, and a flavanol capsule as a baseline. Blood and urine samples were then analyzed to measure flavanol absorption.

The findings were striking. Those who drank the banana smoothie had flavanol levels 84% lower than the control group. Conversely, berry smoothies without bananas showed flavanol levels similar to the capsule, indicating better absorption.

Lead researcher Javier Ottaviani noted his surprise at how much a single banana could diminish flavanol availability. The results suggest that food combinations and how they’re prepared can significantly affect nutrient absorption.

Another experiment involved keeping flavanols and banana ingredients separate before consumption. Even then, flavanol levels declined, implying PPO’s continued influence even after digestion starts.

It’s important to highlight that bananas remain healthy—they provide potassium, fiber, vitamins, and natural sweetness. They should still be part of a balanced diet.

This research indicates that, if you’re aiming to maximize flavanol intake—especially from berries, cocoa, grapes, or apples—it might be better to skip bananas in your smoothie.

For those wanting to preserve flavanols, using fruits with lower PPO activity, like mango, pineapple, or oranges, is recommended. Yogurt can also be a good addition.

This study underscores a broader concept in nutrition science: the way foods are combined, cooked, or prepared can profoundly influence nutrient absorption, not just the individual foods themselves.

Scientists highlight that understanding these interactions is crucial because many people focus on specific nutrients without considering how foods influence each other inside the body.

The connection to larger nutritional trends is clear—research continues into whether flavanols might support blood vessel health, cholesterol management, blood sugar regulation, and cognitive performance.

Some studies involving cocoa flavanols suggest they could benefit older adults or those with suboptimal diets, though findings are still mixed.

The researchers caution that their study was relatively small, involving only eight healthy men in one part and eleven participants in another. Larger, more diverse studies are needed to confirm these effects.

Nutrition experts advise not to overreact—bananas are still nutritious and beneficial overall. The key takeaway is that food combinations matter in maximizing health benefits.

For smoothie fans, the message is straightforward: if you want creaminess, sweetness, and potassium, bananas are excellent. But if increasing flavanol intake from berries or cocoa is your goal, consider leaving bananas out and pairing those with lower-PPO fruits.

For more insights, explore studies on why vitamin K is vital for seniors or how certain snacks might impact your heart rhythm. Additionally, recent research looks into vitamins that may help prevent type 2 diabetes and chemicals in foods that could affect blood pressure.

A coconut tree in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Note: Coconuts are unique—they won’t grow naturally on your island but are available via Mystery Island visits.

How to Get All Fruit Types

While you’ll start with one native fruit, you’ll want to gather the others. To do this, simply dig a hole and bury a fruit of the desired type to grow a new tree. Here are the main ways to collect all different fruits:

    Native Fruit

This is the fruit that naturally grows all over your island. It’s sold at Nook’s Cranny for 400 Bells and shown on your passport.

    Mystery Island Fruit

Another native fruit is designated as a “sister” fruit, appearing on Mystery Island Tours. You can also find coconuts on these islands.

    Mom’s Letter

Shortly after starting the game, your mom will send you a letter with a different native fruit attached.

    Villagers

Villagers may gift you fruit, including ones that aren’t native to your island.

Tip: Giving villagers gifts increases the chance they’ll send you a fruit or other helpful items.

    Other Players

Getting all the fruits may require help from friends or random players:

    • Invite friends to visit your island—they can bring fruits you need.
    • Visit other players’ islands and, with permission, take some of their fruit or fruit trees.

Note: You can only dig up and move other players’ fruit trees if you are Best Friends. Otherwise, you can only shake their trees to collect fruit.

    What Does Fruit Do?

Fruits serve multiple purposes. They can be used in cooking and crafting, or eaten directly to boost your energy. Eating a fruit provides enough energy to break rocks with a shovel or dig up entire trees.

Tip: Digging up and relocating a full fruit tree is a quick way to move it to your island instead of just taking the fruit.

  • How to Get Corrupt Fruit in Grow A Garden by Completing and Solving

How to Get Corrupt Fruit in Grow A Garden by Completing and Solving

Recent Update in Roblox’s Grow a Garden: The Corrupt Mutation

With the latest update to the Zen Event in Grow a Garden, there’s a new mutation called Corrupt. To unlock all new rewards in the Zen content, you’ll need to collect plenty of Corrupt fruits. So, how do you get this new mutation?

How to Get the Corrupt Mutation

Like the Tranquil mutation, there are several ways to obtain the Corrupt mutation. Sometimes, it might seem impossible if you log in at the wrong time. Here’s what you need to know.

    Corrupt Zen Aura Event

    The Event Details

Every hour, the usual Zen Aura event might be replaced by the Corrupted Zen Aura event. This weather effect lasts ten minutes and behaves the same way each time. During this event, red balls of light shoot out from the center of the map where the Corrupted Zen is located. This causes fruits in your garden to become Corrupt.

You can tell when it’s happening because the weather around the map will show leaves and strange clouds forming a cylinder shape. If the sky is red, it’s the Corrupt Zen Aura event; if it’s blue, it’s a regular Zen Aura event.

Getting the Corrupt Pet Mutation, Spray, or Staff

Player holding a Corrupt Pet in Grow a Garden

    Pet Mutation Shard: Corrupted

You might not know if a pet has a Corrupt ability naturally, but you can buy a Pet Mutation Shard called “Corrupted” from the Zen Shop using Chi or Robux (289 Robux). Using this shard on a pet will turn it red and allow it to apply the Corrupt mutation to fruits every 24.45 minutes.

Note: It’s likely you need to grow the Zen Channeller’s tree seven times to unlock this item in the shop. Purchasing with Robux bypasses this requirement.

You can also get the Corrupt Mutation via the Pet Mutation machine, but there’s only a 3.02% chance of success.

    Mutation Spray: Corrupt

The Corrupt Mutation Spray can be used once on crops to give them the Corrupt mutation. You can earn this spray as a reward from the Corrupt Channeller by upgrading the tree with shackles or specific fruits he requests. The chance of receiving this reward is about 8.7%.

    Corrupt Staff

There’s also an approximately 8.7% chance to earn a Corrupt Staff from the same Channeller. We don’t have all the details yet, but it’s expected that like other staff items, this will increase the number of Corrupt mutations and will despawn after a set number of uses.

How to Identify If Your Fruit Is Corrupt

Player holding a Corrupt Fruit in Grow a Garden

    Signs of a Corrupt Fruit

To check if a fruit is Corrupt, highlight it and look below its name. Corrupt fruits will look abnormal—off-color—and emit red sparks and smoke. Crops with the Corrupt mutation tend to have a multiplier of about 20 based on test results.

Additionally, you can purchase three Corrupt Radars from the Zen Shop for 18 Chi. These radars will automatically harvest all ripe Corrupt crops that aren’t marked as favorites.

    Uses for Corrupt Fruits

Player giving a Corrupt Fruit to the Kitsune in Grow a Garden

    Trading with the Kitsune

Tranquil Fruits can be traded with the Kitsune located in the center of the map. When you trade equal amounts of Tranquil and Corrupt fruits, the circle on either side of the Kitsune will fill, and you’ll receive a Kitsune Chest as a reward.

It’s possible that the Corrupt Channeller might request Corrupt fruits as well, but he has only asked for Tranquil fruits so far. We will update this info once his requests change.

Mastering Fruit Consumption in Roblox: Pets Go Edition

Pets Go on Roblox: A Simple Guide to Unlocking and Enjoying Fruits

Pets Go on Roblox is an easy-to-understand game where players can roll for pets and trade them with others. The game’s core mechanics focus on rolling, but there are plenty of upgrades and items to discover that will enhance your pet-collecting experience.

One interesting item you’ll find in the game is fruit. In this guide, we’ll explain how to consume fruit in Pets Go on Roblox. The process is quite simple, but you need to unlock various fruits before you can use them. We’ll also discuss some upgrades linked to fruit that you can invest in.

    How to Unlock Fruits

To access fruits, you need to invest in upgrades from the tree that leads to your “Inventory.” Once you’ve done this, you’ll notice the “Boosts” hexagon become available. Clicking on it will direct you to an expanded version of the “Boosts” upgrade tree, allowing you to unlock it.

Unlocking the main “Boosts” hexagon grants you access to Bananas, Oranges, and Apples. Additionally, by progressing through the tree, you’ll also be able to unlock “More Fruit,” which includes Pineapples and Watermelons. Below is a basic overview of what each fruit type does:

    Fruit Effect
    Apple Earn more XP
    Banana Earn more coins
    Orange Increased luck
    Pineapple Higher drop chance
    Watermelon Faster rolling speed
Rainbow Fruit Combines effects of all above

The Rainbow Fruit becomes available after you invest in “Finding Fruits,” opening a new hexagon for unlocking this special item.

    Other Fruit Upgrades

Once you’ve unlocked Pineapples and Watermelons, you can pursue additional upgrades related to fruit. These upgrades can boost the effects you gain from fruits and even provide shiny versions of them. Some upgrades also increase the maximum amount of fruit you can stack at once.

When you hover over a fruit in your inventory, you’ll see the maximum stack limit. If you reach this limit, you’ll need to either upgrade to hold more or simply consume some fruit.

    How to Eat Fruit

Consuming fruit is straightforward. Just click on the fruit in your inventory, and you’ll see the fruit’s effect displayed in the bottom left corner of your screen. A timer will also appear, indicating how long the effect will last.

    The Fruit Machine

Lastly, there’s the Fruit Machine, where you can combine regular fruits to create shiny versions or Rainbow Fruit. To transform fruits, you’ll need 25 of one type to craft either a shiny fruit or a Rainbow Fruit.

As a tip, it’s best to use basic fruits for making Rainbow Fruits since they provide all the beneficial stats. You can also invest in upgrades for the Fruit Machine, reducing the number of fruits needed for these combinations.

Now you’re ready to explore the fruity side of Pets Go on Roblox and make the most of your pet-collecting adventure!
