    Bespoke E-Bike Brand Offers 22-Pound Passion And Precision


    Ponomarets Bikes, a German e-bike manufacturer based in Dresden, was established in 2022 with a singular goal: to create the world’s lightest custom e-bike. The result is the Eidolon, a precisely engineered made-to-order e-bike that weighs in at under 22 pounds. This bike isn’t intended for everyone, but it elevates the standard for e-bikes across the industry.

    The Eidolon is not merely a flashy item displayed in a showroom. It’s not a lure for customers to gravitate toward more conventional or affordable e-bike models. Founders Roman Ponomarets and Ludwig Eickemeyer are dedicated to producing mobile artistry that embodies gracefulness and high performance.

    What sets the Eidolon apart?

    The Eidolon refuses to compromise. Each component and feature is selected not only for its individual excellence but also for how well it integrates with the entire design.

    Customers of Ponomarets have a variety of options when configuring their Eidolon. Beyond choices in size and finish, buyers can choose either an optimized mechanical crankset or a SRAM RED wireless system.

    The design of the Eidolon’s racing bike does not give off an electrified impression; visible cabling for brakes and shifters is minimal. The bike utilizes a 250-watt Mahle X20 rear hub motor that is seamlessly integrated into the frame, delivering a maximum torque of 55 Nm. This electric motor complies with the EU's maximum limit of 15.5 mph with pedal-assist.

    Power is supplied by a Mahler iX250 internal battery capable of storing up to 236 Wh. Ponomarets claims that the Eidolon has a range of up to 62 miles per charge.

    The remarkably low weight of the Eidolon is largely attributable to its hand-sculpted carbon fiber monocoque frame. The total weight limit is set at 265 pounds, which includes the e-bike, rider, clothing, equipment, and any luggage.

    The term eidolon, derived from the Greek etymon, encompasses various interpretations related to appearance, such as likeness, phantom, and ghost. The interpretation that resonates with Ponomarets’ founders is an idealized image.

    The Eidolon buyer is not your typical customer. They are not in pursuit of the lowest prices or the quickest speeds. This e-bike is tailored for meticulous cyclists who value perfection in both aesthetics and functionality.

    It’s easy to envision an Eidolon owner displaying their bike proudly in their home, perhaps mounting it on specialized hangers under carefully arranged lighting when it’s not in use.

    Aventon Unveils Abound LR Super-Cargo Smart E-Bike


    Aventon has unveiled the Abound LR e-bike, which serves as an extended version of the Abound SR and the original Aventon Abound line of cargo e-bikes. At a pre-launch announcement in February, the company described the Abound SR as a versatile utility and cargo bike, while the Abound LR is intended as a family-oriented cargo carrier that could potentially replace a second vehicle.

    This long-rack LR model shares several smart features and technical specifications with the shorter SR, with differences mainly in length and weight. The Abound LR is 8 pounds heavier and 7.1 inches longer compared to the SR. This makes it analogous to the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, two vehicles designed for similar functionalities—just differing in size.

    Weighing in at 88 pounds, the Abound LR is somewhat cumbersome to pedal without power assistance, unless on flat, smooth surfaces and for those who appreciate the workout. During my ride around Long Beach, California, I found the 80 Nm of torque to effectively propel the bike quickly at stoplights. As a Class 2 e-bike, the Abound LR limits pedal assist and throttle to a maximum speed of 20 mph.

    The e-bike features a 36V, 750-watt rear hub drive motor and a rechargeable Lithium-ion 36V 20Ah battery that provides 708 Wh of electric power. Aventon claims the Abound LR has a maximum range of 60 miles; however, to achieve that distance, it’s essential to use the lowest level of pedal assistance and maintain a slower speed. Factors such as cargo weight, speed, road conditions, and incline will significantly affect range.

    Aventon has thoughtfully included a torque sensor, ensuring that the level of power assistance corresponds to your pedaling efforts rather than your speed. Additionally, the Ride Tune feature in the Aventon app lets you customize the pedal assistance levels according to your liking. These enhancements contribute to a more seamless and efficient riding experience.

    With a total payload capacity of 440 pounds, the Abound LR can support up to 143 pounds on its rear rack. Given the potential weight load, the inclusion of hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm front and 203mm rear rotors is a welcome feature.

    This model accommodates riders from 4 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 6 inches tall, thanks to adjustable handlebar height and angle, as well as seat height. A suspension seat post and adjustable front fork suspension help absorb any bumps encountered on the road.

    Equipped with a center stand and mesh rear wheel guards, loading cargo or children becomes a safer and more convenient task. Standard accessories for the Abound LR include a rear rack, fenders, footboards, and a compact storage bag that fits neatly within the frame behind the seat tube. While the bag isn't large enough for most helmets, it can hold essentials like rain gear, snacks, and tools.

    What Makes the Abound LR So Intelligent?

    The Aventon Abound LR represents the third e-bike from the brand to feature the Aventon Control Unit (ACU), which utilizes GPS and 4G connectivity to enhance both security and convenience. This technology supports over-the-air (OTA) system upgrades and maintenance. Key features of the ACU—which is also present in Aventon’s Abound SR and Level.3 commuter models—include a keyless battery, startup passcode function, GPS tracking, geofencing, an onboard alarm, and an electronic centerstand lock.

    I rode the Abound LR in Long Beach without any cargo, but I am eager to conduct a thorough review of the bike soon. The Abound LR is now available for $1,999 at Aventon retailers and on their official website.

    Electric bicycles are fantastic, but they typically come with a hefty price tag and added weight compared to traditional bikes. Plus, they often require maintenance and can encounter technical problems. But what if there was a way to convert your existing bicycle into an e-bike? Enter the Livall PikaBoost, now in its second iteration. This innovative gadget attaches to your bike, providing it with electric bike capabilities.

    During my visit to CES 2025, I had the opportunity to try out the PikaBoost 2 firsthand. Livall’s PR team arranged for me to visit Las Vegas and experience the PikaBoost 2 among their other products. I must say, it presents a compelling way to gain e-bike features without the need to swap out your current bicycle.

    The PikaBoost 2 is designed to be mounted at the rear of the bicycle frame, extending toward the back tire, accommodating tires between 23mm and 32mm wide. It features a rubber wheel that, when activated, rotates the tire, helping to propel the bike forward without the need for manual pedaling. Control is conveniently managed via a wired remote attached to the handlebars.

    After installation with the provided proprietary tool for added security, users can experience commendable electric support. While the PikaBoost 2 doesn’t match the power of high-end e-bikes equipped with potent electric motors, it still delivers impressive capabilities for its compact size and budget-friendly price. With a peak power output of 500W and 100W for consistent use, riders can reach speeds of approximately 15 mph.

    The device can be utilized in various modes, including workout mode (which adds resistance), eco mode (pedal assist for climbing hills), and cruise mode (providing steady power without needing to pedal).

    Internally, the PikaBoost 2 is powered by a 158Wh battery, which Livall claims can provide a range of approximately 43 miles, although actual performance will depend on usage. An optional upgraded battery offers a range of 59 miles. When the battery depletes, it can be easily detached for charging without needing to remove the entire device. The battery features USB-PD 3.1 and QuickCharge 3.0 capabilities, allowing it to reach a full charge in merely three hours.

    While the PikaBoost 2 isn’t the first conversion kit to transform a traditional bike into an e-bike, what sets it apart is its user-friendly installation and relative affordability. Livall plans to start mass production in late August, with shipping beginning in September. Priced at $500, it will be available for purchase on the company’s website and later on Amazon, likely at a higher cost.

    Mod Bikes has unveiled the limited-edition Mod Easy Sidecar Sahara, a cargo e-bike inspired by the iconic 1940s BMW R75 Sahara motorcycle. The Sidecar Sahara is set to make its debut on November 9, 2024, at the Electrify Expo located at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack in Austin, Texas.

    The e-bike takes cues from the highly sought-after BMW R 75 Sahara motorcycle, which is a prized collectible among enthusiasts. Mod Bikes stands out in the U.S. e-bike market by offering models equipped with sidecars, showcasing a variety of designs. The innovative Easy Sidecar models can easily convert from a sidecar e-bike to a standard two-wheeler in just a few minutes, making them both practical and fun for transporting pets, small children, groceries, and other cargo.

    Key Features of the Mod Easy Sidecar Sahara

    The Mod Easy Sidecar Sahara offers similarities to the Mod Easy Sidecar 3 e-bike I reviewed back in April 2024. However, Mod has enhanced this version with a dual-crown motorcycle-style front suspension system, a longer sidecar frame, two headlights, and an elevated cargo rack.

    Additionally, Mod has integrated a rear doggie door into the sidecar design. Unlike the previous model, which required a person to lift a pet into the sidecar, this new door allows pets to hop in on their own, making it a more inviting setup for furry companions.

    The Easy Sidecar Sahara maintains the same powertrain specifications as the standard model, featuring torque-sensing pedal assist, a robust 750-watt continuous rear hub motor capable of reaching speeds up to 28 mph, and a range of 50 to 100 miles based on riding conditions, total weight, and other factors. The bike can support up to 400 pounds, with a maximum of 150 pounds in the sidecar and an additional 65-pound capacity on the versatile Snap-On rear rack.

    The starting price for the Mod Easy Sidecar limited edition is $3,899, with an introductory offer of $3,499 available until December 1, 2024.
