  • Mastering the Eight Gates Formation in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Mastering the Eight Gates Formation in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Liu Bei’s campaign in Dynasty Warriors: Origins features a unique and challenging battle at Xinye. During this encounter, Cao Cao’s forces utilize the Eight Gates Formation, essentially a defensive structure made up of heavily armored soldiers. The only hope for victory comes from strategist Xu Shu, whose strategic insights reveal how to dismantle this formidable setup.

While overcoming the Eight Gates Formation is straightforward once you understand its weaknesses, missteps can lead to significant trouble. Here’s a guide to securing victory at Xinye.

Overview of the Battle of Xinye

In the Battle of Xinye, the focus is primarily on understanding the complexities of the Eight Gates Formation. Here are some key points to remember:

    • You cannot attack the Eight Gates Formation until you have captured both northern camps. This allows Xu Shu to scout and identify the enemies’ vulnerabilities. Attempting a direct assault from the southern route will not be effective.

    • Once you launch your attack on the formation, enemy reinforcements will start to appear from the northwest. Their goal is to reclaim the bases and take out Xu Shu, which would result in losing the battle.

      • Zhou Cang can defend the western base for a while, but he cannot hold it indefinitely.
      • Bailuan will appear to prevent Zhang Liao from joining the reinforcements, but his mist will clear once the Eight Gates Formation is defeated.
    • After the Eight Gates Formation falls, you still need to defeat Xiahou Yuan before Zhang Liao can break through and defeat Xu Shu, all while ensuring Liu Bei’s safety.
      • The good news is that breaking the formation will demoralize the remaining enemy troops, making them easier to defeat than usual.

Strategies to Break the Eight Gates Formation

Xu Shu’s critical advice is to enter the Eight Gates Formation through a gate that is distinct from the others. Each gate has its characteristics, but there is one notable difference that becomes clear once you know what to look for:

Choose the entrance that lacks a burning torch. This gate is known as the Gate of Life, Gate of View, or Gate of Opening, and serves as the weak point.

By entering through this weak point, you will face two mid-level officers consecutively. After defeating the second officer, many armored soldiers will flee. At this point, you should step back outside the formation and wait for a cutscene. You’ll see the Eight Gates rearranging, but your objective is to locate another entrance without a torch. Repeat this process three times to confront Jia Xu; defeating him will ultimately cause the entire formation to collapse.

Can You Defeat the Shield Troops?

The shield troops that make up the walls of the Eight Gates Formation cannot be moved, trampled, damaged, or jumped over. The only way to get past them is by defeating the officer commanding that section.

What If You Choose the Wrong Gate?

If you mistakenly enter a gate illuminated by a burning torch, you can still tackle that section of the formation, but it will be significantly more challenging. Instead of facing two officers, you will contend with three elite officers from Cao Cao’s army, such as Zhang He or Yu Jin. Choosing the wrong gate will strain your resources, Guards, and the amount of time Zhou Cang can hold the northern line.

By following this strategy, you can effectively navigate the challenges of the Battle of Xinye and secure a crucial victory for Liu Bei’s forces.

  • Unlocking and Utilizing Vintage Coins in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Unlocking and Utilizing Vintage Coins in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Old Coins are the primary collectibles in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Found throughout China, these artifacts from a bygone dynasty don’t carry monetary worth but represent Ziluan’s reputation among others. With a total of five hundred coins available, players must possess both patience and skill to track them all down across several playthroughs of the story.

At the beginning of your journey, it’s wise to adopt a strategy of looking for Old Coins wherever you explore. The sooner you gather them, the more rewards you’ll unlock to benefit you in future confrontations.

    How To Collect Old Coins

There are three key methods for gathering Old Coins in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Locate Them on the World Map

Only a specific number of Old Coins are hidden on the World Map. Unlike some resources such as Pyroxene and Moongrass, these coins don’t regenerate; you can only collect them once.

Old Coins can be difficult to notice unless you are right next to one, but their visibility improves significantly when using the Eyes Of The Sacred Bird to scout the area. Upon unlocking a new province, your first step should be to use the Eyes and search for hidden Old Coins.

    Finish Missions and Character Requests

Completing certain side quests given by your fellow officers rewards you with Old Coins. Keep an eye out for new characters to converse with on the World Map whenever the story progresses. Even simple tasks like advancing a Bond storyline can lead to earning additional Old Coins.

To see who is available for conversation, hover over each province on the map menu, or check the Interactions tab at the Shui Jing Retreat (refer to the details below). Some characters might only show up after reading a letter they’ve sent.

Once you reach the end of the main game, make sure to complete all side quests before starting over again. This approach prevents you from having to return to Chapter Five’s endpoint from the beginning.

    Take on Ultimate Warrior Challenges

Completing the main storyline unlocks Ultimate Warrior Difficulty. When you replay missions on this level—either for the first time or via the Inn— you will face an optional Challenge that typically involves completing objectives rapidly or defeating tough characters under specific conditions.

Ultimate Warrior Challenges come with various rewards, with many offering ten Old Coins. To claim the War God’s Sash for collecting all 500 Old Coins, you’ll need to earn these coins through gameplay.

    How To Utilize Old Coins

You can exchange Old Coins at the Shui Jing Retreat, located near the Inn in You Province at the northern edge of the map. Upon entering, select the Old Coins option to view a screen with all the rewards available and claim any rewards you’ve earned since your last visit.

There is no cost to spend Old Coins; you simply earn rewards by reaching specific milestones in your collection.

Typically, you would need to visit the Retreat to check the reward thresholds. To save time, you can refer to the chart below:

  • Strategies to Defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Strategies to Defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Lu Bu is frequently depicted as one of the mightiest warriors in Chinese history, and Dynasty Warriors: Origins is no different. Throughout the main storyline of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you will come across Lu Bu multiple times, starting in Chapter Two. However, it isn’t until a crucial battle later in the game that you’ll actually get the chance to take him on. Most of the time, his unexpected appearances force you to retreat, similar to the character Mr. X in Resident Evil 2, where you’ll need to abandon strategic positions and escape for survival.

Eventually, during the mission titled "Battle of Xiapi," you’ll find yourself in a one-on-one duel with Lu Bu, where you can defeat him for good—provided you have the right skills and a bit of luck on your side. Be forewarned: Lu Bu is notoriously tough, just like in other Dynasty Warriors titles. He lives up to his fearsome reputation by delivering powerful hits, whether fighting on foot or riding his legendary horse, Red Hare. You’ll need to bring your A-game to bring him down.

Preparing for the Fight Against Lu Bu

    Battle Preparation

By the time you face Lu Bu, your build in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is likely well-established. Still, it’s wise to revisit the Battle Preparation menu. Make sure you’re equipped with the strongest weapon available that suits your playstyle. Ideally, pick a weapon effective against single targets and one that doesn’t require precise timing; swords and spears generally work better than gauntlets or wheel-type weapons.

Keep in mind that you may not have to face Lu Bu in every storyline route. His battle involves an alliance between Liu Bei and Cao Cao, so opting to ally with Sun Jian or Sun Ce in Chapter Four could allow you to bypass the encounter altogether.

Additionally, ensure you have an accessory equipped, along with squad tactics and one of the Dynasty Warriors gems that align with how you prefer to play. As for Arts, a diverse set is beneficial: include some for knockbacks, some with high damage, and others with varying Bravery costs. Most importantly, ensure you have at least one Special Art equipped to interrupt some of Lu Bu’s moves, as this will be crucial for your survival.

    Approaching Lu Bu

During the War Council, you will receive a briefing on the mission’s objective: Xun You and Jia Xu will unleash the floodgates, causing water to inundate the castle. Meanwhile, Xiahou Dun and other officers will assault Lu Bu’s castle gates in an attempt to lure him out. In the initial moments of the battle, you can choose how to spend your time—helping the engineers, capturing nearby bases, or a mix of both as dialogues unfold. Eventually, you’ll receive a notification indicating that Lu Bu’s forces are attacking the floodgates, which is the right time to jump in and assist.

Contribute to your allies’ efforts across the map until the floodgates are breached and the castle is flooded. Once the gates of Xiapi castle are destroyed, Lu Bu will retreat temporarily. Your next objective will be to defeat two of his officers: Chen Gong and Zhang Liao. Track them down and take them out; Zhang Liao can be quickly defeated in a duel, but you might have to dismantle Chen Gong’s Large Force before facing him. After defeating these officers, you’ll receive a victory screen, and that will lead you into a confrontation with Lu Bu.

    Strategies to Defeat Lu Bu

    Phase One: On Horseback

Lu Bu begins the duel mounted, which allows him greater mobility and access to unique skills. While you may consider summoning your own horse to match him, it would be more advantageous to remain on foot for most of this encounter. Staying on foot grants you access to a wider range of options, particularly your dodge maneuver.

Your main aim during this phase is to reduce Lu Bu’s health to about 90%. Keep a safe distance—he’s incredibly swift and won’t hesitate to charge if you get too close. Instead, wait for him to use his skills before rushing in to land a few hits while he cools down. Use your Special Arts to interrupt his strong moves when he begins glowing gold.

If Lu Bu starts to glow red, be cautious; he’s about to execute powerful attacks, including trampling or launching massive projectiles. The best way to handle this is to dodge promptly and then re-engage. Mastering the timing of perfect dodges will help, but your priority should be avoiding his attacks.

Once Lu Bu’s health drops to around 90%, he will leap from his horse and slam down hard. You’ll need to dodge this heavy attack. After this point, he’ll continue the fight on foot, and the dynamics will shift.

    Phase Two: Ground Combat

Now the fight will operate like a typical officer battle. You should focus on depleting Lu Bu’s defenses using heavy attacks, Musou, Arts, and Rage. Utilize the Assault command to deal burst damage and knock him back. Although Lu Bu has a high defense with several shields, he takes noticeable damage once that defense is breached.

Don’t be misled by the red effects surrounding his attacks; many of them are blockable. Watch for the flash of light signaling an attack and get ready to parry. Take full advantage of counterattacks until the battle progresses to the final phase.

    Phase Three: Unleashing Full Power

When Lu Bu’s health drops to about half, he will enter a third phase with a brand-new array of moves. In this phase, he emphasizes unblockable and interruptable attacks. To adapt, you’ll want to stay as close as possible so you can capitalize on opportunities to use your Special Arts. Watch out for his golden glow, as this signals a powerful attack involving projectile arcs or shockwaves.

When Lu Bu takes a moment to gather energy, he may leap high into the air and slam down, sending shockwaves in all directions. Be ready to interrupt him during this time. If he charges up for a strong attack, ensure you dodge accordingly.

As his health dwindles, red rings will emerge above his head. When they are fully charged, expect him to position himself and unleash a series of shockwaves. Dodge or jump over these while gradually moving closer to Lu Bu. Once the ability has cooled down, you will have an opportunity to strike, continuing your assault until his health hits zero. Congratulations, you’ve defeated Lu Bu and can now advance to Chapter Five of Dynasty Warriors: Origins!

  • Defeating Guan Yu in Dynasty Warriors: A Winning Strategy

Defeating Guan Yu in Dynasty Warriors: A Winning Strategy

If you choose to follow the Cao Cao storyline in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you’ll soon find yourself facing off against the fierce warrior Guan Yu. As you progress through the campaign, you’ll need to evade his grasp while sticking by Cao Cao to complete the Battle of Chibi, wrap up Chapter Five, and reach your chosen ending. While Guan Yu may not be the toughest opponent in the Dynasty Warriors series, he is a formidable adversary during a critical moment in the story when your options are limited.

Success against Guan Yu requires careful preparation and a bit of luck. By selecting the right weapons, Arts, and gems in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you can turn an otherwise daunting fight into a more manageable challenge. Here’s what you need to know to come out on top against Guan Yu.

Preparing for the Encounter with Guan Yu

    Battle Readiness

Since you might not realize you’ll be going up against Guan Yu until the battle begins, it can be hard to prepare thoroughly. However, you should treat the battle prep screen like you would for any tough endgame conflict. Equip the best weapon available for your preferred style, such as a crescent blade or sword, which are versatile options against both solo officers and larger groups. Ultimately, the weapon you choose should align with your own proficiency and play style.

It’s crucial to equip the optimal Arts for your weapon. Additionally, make sure you have at least one Special Art equipped to counter Guan Yu’s attacks. Review your accessories and team tactics before jumping into the fray.

    Navigating to Guan Yu

Eventually, Guan Yu will appear on the battlefield, and your mission will shift from escaping with Cao Cao to defeating Guan Yu. Head to his positioned area on the map, clearing out any foot soldiers that may be in your way before focusing your efforts on Guan Yu himself.

    Strategies for Defeating Guan Yu

    Basic Tactics

You can primarily treat Guan Yu like any other officer, but keep a lookout for his unique moves (detailed below). His defenses are not as robust as other characters, making it easier to stagger him and set up for an Assault command. Utilize your Special Arts, parry moves, and Musou Attacks to break through his defenses and create openings for powerful strikes. Whenever possible, leverage your teammates’ tactics to distract Guan Yu, dispatch his henchmen, or deal additional damage.

One of Guan Yu’s signature moves is an aerial spin with his crescent blade, where he creates three circles above his head. This move is well-telegraphed and easy to parry; just look for the white flash, and you’ll get the hang of the timing. If you block even one strike, you’ll interrupt his combo, creating an opportunity for a counter-attack—or even a lengthy parry combo if you wish to initiate it.

    Key Moves to Watch For

Like many officers, Guan Yu frequently employs interruptible attacks, signaled by gold flashes and on-screen button commands. He might begin these moves with red rings, which are just a precursor. After this, he will glow gold, allowing you to interrupt him using one of your Special Arts.

There are two unblockable attacks to be cautious about. The first involves him pulling back while glowing red, then quickly charging at you, thrusting anything in his path. This move is easy to avoid but happens rapidly, and Guan Yu can chain these charges together in succession. Stay alert and be ready to dodge when you see him flash red.

The second unblockable attack is a combo featuring an aerial slam: he will initiate with an upward slash, then use that momentum to leap into the air before crashing down and creating a shockwave that can knock you back. Be prepared to dodge twice: once for the upward slash, and again for the ground impact. While this move takes a moment to charge, you can potentially interrupt it with a Musou Attack if you’re well-timed, but proceed with caution.

Though Cao Cao may not provide much assistance during your battle with Guan Yu, he could help diminish Guan Yu’s forces over time. Eventually, you’ll wear down this legendary warrior, leading to an emotional scene where Guan Yu shows respect for both Ziluan and Cao Cao, but vows that Liu Bei will return. With this victory, you’ve bested Guan Yu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins and can now enjoy Cao Cao’s ending.

  • Mastering Dynasty Warriors: Steps to Disband a Huge Army

Mastering Dynasty Warriors: Steps to Disband a Huge Army

One of the standout new features in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the introduction of Large Forces. As the name suggests, these are large groups of enemies—comprising foot soldiers and high-ranking officers—gathered in a single spot on the battlefield. More often than not, these Large Forces center around a particularly strong enemy officer, and in the later stages of the game, they are usually focused on the mission’s primary target: the single commander that must be defeated to win the battle.

Understanding how Large Forces operate (and how to break them apart) is crucial to your strategy, particularly in key end-game scenarios. Mastering their mechanics will not only help you progress through the main storyline of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, but also enable you to tackle many of its side quests. However, tackling a Large Force can be daunting; getting caught in the middle can leave you vulnerable to unblocked attacks from all directions. Here’s what you need to know when faced with a Large Force.

Understanding Large Forces in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

    Creating a Large Force

Large Forces are made up of numerous officers and hundreds, or even thousands, of foot soldiers tightly packed together. They often emerge at strategic locations, such as city gates or key exit points. They serve a similar function to boss battles in traditional RPGs: they are the challenging final obstacle to overcome in specific missions, marking the climax of your efforts.

Large Forces can either be present from the start of a mission or develop over time. The game will usually alert you through its messaging system when a Large Force materializes, and their location will be clearly indicated on your map for easier navigation. Sometimes, these forces can appear rapidly due to various factors, like meeting specific mission objectives or small enemy groups merging into a central location.

When a Large Force appears, it can boost the enemy’s Morale, which might put you at a disadvantage. Morale is influenced by each team’s minor victories; capturing bases or defeating enemy officers can improve morale, which accumulates and affects how well your allies perform when you’re not actively aiding them. Low morale among your allies increases the risk of loss, while high morale enhances their chances of success.

Scripted events, like the arrival of a powerful general or the delivery of supplies, can also influence morale.

Importantly, engaging in combat within a Large Force enhances the Courage of your enemies. This means they become much tougher to fight when grouped together. It’s wise not to confront a powerful enemy officer within a Large Force. Taking on weaker officers, especially nameless ones, might be manageable, but it’s advisable to dissolve the Large Force before facing its leader directly.

    Disbanding a Large Force

    Creating a Clear Path

Even though Dynasty Warriors games promote the idea of an “Army of One,” it’s generally unwise to attack a Large Force solo. You will likely be outnumbered by several enemy officers and possibly face thousands of soldiers who can surround you. You will need help, but what if your allies are busy elsewhere?

Once you learn that a Large Force exists, your priority should be to carve a path for your allies to join the fight. Check the map for nearby bases where your allied officers may be engaged. Assist them by defeating the base leader and some of their troops, and they are likely to follow you back to the Large Force.

    Managing the Crowd

When you reach a Large Force, assess its formation. There will be clear boundaries to its structure, which you should target first. Start by eliminating foot soldiers positioned at the outer edges, gradually making your way toward the center where the more formidable officers await.

Specific combos and special moves will also be beneficial. For instance, executing four light slashes followed by two heavy strikes while wielding a sword can unleash devastating aerial attacks against numerous foes. Similarly, using a spear, three heavy attacks in a row (after any number of light attacks) can yield similar results. Activate your Musou attack for effective crowd control and call for an ally to assist and enter Rage Mode. Using team tactics can also allow you to deal area damage efficiently. Employing your horse to trample enemies around the edges in a line is another viable option.

Equipping the Vortex Gem can amplify the damage done when launching enemies into the air.

Be aware that you might face foes with large shields defending the edges of the Large Force. To remove them, choose a small segment of the wall and attack it until you stagger the shieldbearers, triggering the Assault command. This will disrupt the formation, allowing you to penetrate further into the cluster. Attack all the shieldbearers from behind to clear a path for you and your allies quickly.

    Facing Off Against Officers

    Dynasty Warriors Origins 2

Keep in mind that every Large Force displays a sort of health bar at the top of the screen while you’re engaged with them. Defeating regular enemies contributes minimally to this bar, but taking down an officer will significantly reduce its health, making their defeat crucial for disbanding the force.

Before you challenge an officer, ensure there’s a clear path on at least one side to avoid being blindsided while engaged in one-on-one combat. Once you’re ready to face them, employ your usual tactics, making sure to parry or interrupt when prompted, and use Arts to breach their defenses.

It’s wise to always carry at least one Art marked “Sp.” in your arsenal, as these moves use Bravery and are necessary to disrupt certain unblockable attacks.

When you stagger an officer, seize the chance to use the Assault command; activating it grants invincibility and creates significant knockback for nearby enemies. So even if you see threats approaching from another direction, a well-timed Assault can help you escape.

In conclusion, the key to tackling a Large Force is to begin at the edges, progress toward an officer, defeat them, and repeat the process until the health bar is completely depleted. Once it reaches zero, most of the foot soldiers will flee, leaving behind only a few officers and a reduced contingent. Your next objective should be to confront the leader of the Large Force, who will now be significantly easier to defeat without their allies supporting them.

With this knowledge and your preferred weapon in hand, you’ll have no trouble dismantling Large Forces. This mechanic adds a fresh dimension to the latest Dynasty Warriors game, making battles feel more dynamic and challenging. Mastering how to navigate Large Forces will greatly enhance your experience in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, especially during the climactic phases.

  • Defeating Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: The Ultimate Guide

Defeating Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: The Ultimate Guide

The initial adversary you’ll face in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is Zhang Jiao, the charismatic leader of the Yellow Turban rebellion. Unlike many traditional gaming experiences, the Dynasty Warriors franchise typically avoids standard one-on-one boss battles. Instead, most missions involve you battling challenging foes amidst epic clashes featuring swarms of warriors on either side. Nevertheless, Origins occasionally changes tempo to pit players against formidable opponents like Zhang Jiao in head-to-head confrontations. Expect a tough fight from the get-go.

Zhang Jiao, also known as the General of Heaven, leads the initial assault of the Yellow Turban uprising, which serves as your primary threat during the early stages of the game. You’ll spend several missions pursuing him, culminating in a duel at the end of Chapter One. Below is everything you need to know to prepare for your battle with Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

    Preparing for Zhang Jiao

    Battle Prep

Before entering the confrontation with Zhang Jiao, be aware that you will first have to participate in a typical skirmish found in Dynasty Warriors before facing the general himself. Hence, it’s essential to ensure that your equipment and skills are optimized on the Battle Preparation screen. Verify that you have the highest-damage weapon equipped (of your preferred type), a suitable accessory, and one of the better gems available in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Most importantly, ensure you have at least one Art that carries the “[Sp.]” designation. These moves are essential for interrupting specific enemy actions, a key tactic for evading damage and effectively staggering your opponents. You will have numerous opportunities to utilize these techniques during your fight with Zhang Jiao.

    Healing Options

Proceed through the mission as usual until a cutscene plays that opens a gate, prompting a shift in objective to “Reach Zhang Jiao.” Before you rush in, though, take a moment to restock your meat buns. If your supply is low, ride to the nearest base—whether it’s in enemy or ally hands—and break open the pots to fill your inventory.

Utilizing the Eyes of the Sacred Bird, you can spot meat bun pots glowing green, even through walls. This makes it easy to find healing items whenever necessary.

If you’re unable to find any, there will be a few meat buns available in the arena for your duel with Zhang Jiao. However, they might be challenging to access amid the chaos, so it’s wise to enter the battle with some extra buns and save these for when you truly need them.

    Defeating Zhang Jiao

    Phase One

After a brief cutscene, you’ll engage in a one-on-one duel with Zhang Jiao. In this first phase, treat the battle similar to that of a typical officer encounter, with a few exceptions that will be detailed later. Use blocking to your advantage, and if you feel confident enough, try to parry his attacks perfectly to unleash a counter. Employ heavy attacks and Arts to chip away at his defenses. Don’t forget to interrupt him with your Special Arts when you see the prompt—indicated by him glowing gold with a button combo emerging above his head.

Zhang Jiao has some unique attacks to watch for. One of these involves him summoning rocks from the ground and throwing them at you in quick succession. Fortunately, these boulders can be blocked or parried, although parrying might not be the best strategy. If you get hit by just one, you’ll be staggered, and the following rocks can cause significant damage to your health.

Additionally, Zhang Jiao will execute a two-phase attack where he causes stalagmites to erupt towards you. If you fail to interrupt this attack, be ready to dodge twice, as the initial wave will be quickly followed by a barrage of boulders falling from above.

At times, he may flash red, with the camera zooming out to focus on his spear. This signifies that you need to retreat as he’s gearing up to summon a rain of boulders. The moment he flashes red, either summon your horse or adjust your camera and make a dash. It’s best to overestimate the distance needed to escape—run all the way to the opposite side of the arena if necessary.

In addition, Zhang Jiao might call forth a group of shadow soldiers just before sending larger boulders your way. The best approach is to run directly away to put distance between you and then either sprint or continuously dodge to the side—whether on foot or horseback.

    War God Rage

When Zhang Jiao’s health drops to about 33% (after multiple stagger attempts), you’ll see another cutscene that introduces a new combat mechanic: War God Rage. This can only be activated when your Musou meter is completely filled. War God Rage grants invincibility, increases the range of your basic attacks, allows certain moves to restore health from enemies, and lets you employ Arts without consuming Bravery.

When this occurs, activate Rage, perform several normal combos to recover your health, and then unleash your Arts until your meter is depleted. Once it runs out, your Musou attack will automatically trigger. At this point, Zhang Jiao will kneel, invulnerable, as he momentarily reflects on your remarkable strength. This marks the transition into the second phase.

    Phase Two: Large Force

The second phase kicks off with Zhang Jiao being surrounded by a vast army of troops rushing in to assist him. Your next goal is to dismantle this Large Force. It’s advisable to hold back during the first few seconds of the battle to allow your allies to arrive. Focus on Zhang Jiao only after this phase, as he becomes significantly more formidable when his morale is bolstered. Keep watch for tornadoes he creates during this segment of the fight.

Once the allies join the fray, you can start to engage Zhang Jiao’s troops. Begin by clearing out the edges and working your way toward the nearest officer. Take them out in one-on-one engagements, create a new pathway to another officer, and repeat the process until the Large Force disbands. Avoid being surrounded, and assist your allies in need by riding past them to restore their health. If you require more guidance on how to break down a Large Force, check out our detailed guide.

Occasionally, Zhang Jiao may attempt to use the Thunderous Tempest tactic; if he activates it, you’ll have 90 seconds to defeat 300 enemies to disrupt his area-of-effect attack. Utilize your heavy attacks, Arts, and Musou meter—foot soldiers are easier to eliminate than officers during this window. Disrupting this tactic will raise the morale of your allies, enhancing their performance against Zhang Jiao.

    Phase Three

Once you have successfully disbanded the Large Force, you will enter the final phase of the battle against Zhang Jiao. He will start this phase accompanied by a diminished group of troops; it’s wise to defeat most of them before you confront Zhang Jiao directly.

Fortunately, Zhang Jiao’s move set in the third phase largely mirrors that of the first phase. Continue employing your blocking, evading from the boulders, interrupting his attacks, and breaking through his defenses. The primary distinction is that your allies will be present, providing assistance against foot soldiers and possibly landing hits on Zhang Jiao himself. In time, you’ll whittle down his health.

Once his health bar hits zero, you’ll be rewarded with a cutscene showing Zhang Jiao attempting to flee but being mortally wounded. This moment leads to a heartfelt exchange where you gain deeper insight into your character’s past and significance in this tumultuous world. Finally, you can relax knowing you’ve conquered your first major boss battle in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Leveling Up and Utilizing Pyroxene Gems in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Understanding how to enhance, utilize, and equip pyroxene gems is essential for optimizing your character’s abilities in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Unlike other titles in the franchise, Origins features a single playable character. This protagonist, whom players can name, is referred to as Ziluan by fellow warriors. Ziluan stands apart not just for his capability to take on overwhelming enemy numbers, but also for the extensive customization options available to him. Players can tailor Ziluan’s weapons, skills, tactics, and much more. However, one of the most impactful forms of customization comes from his pyroxene gems.

You’ll gain access to crafting and equipping pyroxene gems fairly early in your journey through Dynasty Warriors: Origins. While there are only a few types of gems, they offer a variety of effects that can significantly enhance your character’s capabilities when properly leveled and utilized. Here’s a guide on how to maximize your use of pyroxene gems, along with recommendations for which gems to prioritize based on your playing style.

    Understanding Pyroxene Gems

    Unlocking and Collecting Pyroxene

Shortly after earning the ability to visit inns during the main storyline of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you can begin crafting gems. After meeting the character Zhuhe, you’ll receive a small initial supply of pyroxene. This resource is crucial for crafting and upgrading your gems throughout the game. However, you’ll need to actively seek out additional pyroxene to enhance your gems effectively.

Pyroxene can be found scattered throughout the world map, identifiable by orange gathering nodes resembling small clusters of jagged rock spikes. Just approach one and press the designated button to gather pyroxene. Additionally, once you unlock the Eyes of the Sacred Bird ability, you can reveal hidden pyroxene deposits on the map by making them glow.

You can also obtain pyroxene by completing various side quests, opening special letters, or defeating thieves.

If you’re in need of a significant amount of pyroxene quickly, keep in mind that gathering nodes will respawn after collecting from them. Once fast travel is available, a great strategy is to harvest all the pyroxene from a specific area, then move to another and repeat the process. Feel free to revisit prior regions multiple times until you’ve gathered all the pyroxene you need.

    Crafting and Upgrading Gems

To craft pyroxene gems, you must visit inns, which can be found in most towns within Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Approach the town on the world map and interact with it, then choose "Inn" from the menu. Select the "Create Gems" option to access the crafting screen. Once you have crafted gems, you can equip them from the Battle Preparation screen or while on the world map—just not during active combat.

While at the inn, it’s also a good idea to check any letters you may have collected, as many contain rewards like additional pyroxene, and you might want to adjust your equipment if needed.

On the crafting screen, you’ll see five types of gems, along with a counter that shows how much pyroxene you have. The process of crafting is straightforward: select how many pyroxene pieces you want to convert into gems, and the game will handle the rest. Each piece of pyroxene is transformed into a gem at random. If you already possess that specific gem, the pyroxene used will instead contribute to leveling it up. Occasionally, you may trigger a "satisfying result," resulting in the creation of three gems instead of one.

Yes, you can level up all your gems throughout your playthrough, enhancing their effectiveness over time. As gems reach higher levels, you will need to acquire more duplicates to progress further. Unfortunately, you cannot directly choose which gems your pyroxene will upgrade, unless you are taking advantage of a system feature. Occasionally, you may notice a notification when accessing the crafting window indicating that, "You saw a light in the pyroxene." This highlights specific gems in the crafting menu—usually three out of five—allowing all your pyroxene to be allocated toward those gems.

Ultimately, there’s little reason to hoard your pyroxene unless you are trying to focus on upgrading a specific gem awaiting this highlight. Using your pyroxene as you acquire it will increase your chances of crafting superior gems. While some gems are better than others, all have their unique advantages.

    Top Pyroxene Gems to Prioritize

    Wellspring Gem

The Wellspring Gem is an excellent accessory for nearly any build. Its value is especially noticeable in the latter stages of the game, where battles against tough bosses become frequent and healing items may dwindle. This gem restores a portion of HP for every 100 foes you defeat—and the health restored grows stronger as you level up, while the enemy threshold remains the same.

    Oblivion Gem

Many of the most potent weapons in Dynasty Warriors: Origins have a notably short attack range. While they may unleash massive damage or allow for amazing combos, you need to get up close to enemies to maximize their potential. This is where the Oblivion Gem shines, as it expands the reach of your equipped weapon based on its level and the amount of pyroxene invested.

    Vortex Gem

One of the most satisfying tactics in any Dynasty Warriors game is the ability to launch hordes of enemies into the air. This crowd control technique not only keeps foes at bay but also inflicts considerable damage and adds to the enjoyment of gameplay. For maximizing this tactic’s effectiveness, equinipping the Vortex Gem increases the damage you deal to aerial opponents with each level increase.

Below is a summary of all the gems available for crafting in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, along with their specific effects. Although you should prioritize the aforementioned three gems, every gem serves a purpose, so it is worthwhile to invest in each one to enhance your overall versatility.

    Gem Effect
    Oblivion Gem Expands attack range
Vortex Gem Increases damage to airborne enemies
Scorch Gem Boosts damage against enemies during parries
Wellspring Gem Restores HP for every 100 foes defeated
Ascendance Gem Grants a chance to automatically block attacks from enemy officers

With this knowledge, you’re all set to craft and utilize gems effectively, enhancing your character build and adapting your strategies as necessary. Just remember to collect and use pyroxene regularly to maximize the advantages of your gems in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

  • Unlocking True Endings in Dynasty Warriors: Origins Guide

Unlocking True Endings in Dynasty Warriors: Origins Guide

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, there are three distinct endings tied to the main factions. You’ll make your choice in Chapter 3, but after completing the game once, you can replay it from that chapter to easily explore the other two endings. If you’re unable to unlock a new route during a major battle, you can simply replay from that battle to try again.

However, don’t expect it to be straightforward. While the tasks are mostly simple, they lean more towards being fast rather than skillful, so we recommend playing on Historian difficulty. Playing on a higher difficulty can lead to prolonged enemy encounters, making it difficult to change the path of history as necessary.

    Shu Ending (Liu Bei’s Path)

The Shu ending involving Liu Bei is the easiest to achieve in the game since it involves altering just one mission instead of two or three. This occurs towards the end of the game and requires less speed. In fact, it’s possible to achieve this ending almost by accident, though there are still specific actions you must take.

During Chapter Five, at the Battle of Changban, your main task is to help Liu Bei escape. However, simply completing this mission won’t lead you to the true ending. Stay focused on your objectives until you encounter Cao Cao in a circular area at the map’s northern section. To achieve the true ending, you need to turn around and eliminate that enemy unit. On Historian difficulty, Liu Bei will survive as long as you dedicate time to defending the bridge against the first wave of generals. This lets you protect the bridge first, then move north to engage Cao Cao, who appears a couple of minutes after Bailuan shows up.

You’re mainly focusing on taking down Cao Cao, but you’ll need to deal with several enemies to reach him, so it’s advantageous to have a mix of area control skills and targeted attacks. Speed isn’t as critical here, but the mission concludes once Liu Bei successfully escapes, so don’t waste time hunting down Cao Cao.

Once you defeat him, a ‘Fate Altered’ message will appear. Complete the battle by assisting Liu Bei’s escape, then proceed through the final two battles normally to unlock the Shu ending.

    Wu Ending (Sun Jian’s Path)

The Wu ending involving Sun Jian is notably more complex than the Shu ending, yet still easier than the Wei ending. There are technically three crucial battles, but in the final one, you only need to complete it after correctly finishing the first two to continue on the correct path.

In our playthrough, we completed this third battle normally and still achieved the true ending, which wasn’t the case for Cao Cao’s route.

The first key moment occurs early, during Chapter Three’s third battle: the Battle of Xiangyang. You need to rescue Sun Jian. The mission instructions may tell you to abandon him and push ahead, but ignoring this will lead to an instant success and change the course of history.

At the start of the battle, head south and clear the path to defeat Pang Ji and claim the base from Wang Can and another general. Then leave through the north gate and head south along the westward path, ignoring Zhang Yun. You must defeat the Mighty General to open the next gate. Here, you will encounter the phantom Zhang Jiao, who also needs to be defeated.

If Zhang Jiao is absent and you notice a stop sign on the map, you have arrived earlier than required. Wait for the battle dialogue and fog to develop.

Although Zhang Jiao isn’t as difficult as his boss version, he can still put up a strong fight, so be sure to use your best skills. Once you take him down, the stop-signed path will unveil; follow it to rescue Sun Jian. Ignore other enemies until you reach the cave with Lu Gong, at which point a cutscene occurs, solidifying your success and resulting in a ‘Fate Altered’ screen. While it’s possible to fail saving Sun Jian by taking too long against Zhang Jiao, the timing is more forgiving compared to other routes, so ensure you can achieve it before moving on. Now, you’re halfway to the true ending.

The second significant moment arises in Chapter Four during the Suppression of Wu. If you’ve previously played this route, you can skip ahead; otherwise, you’ll need to fight through several battles. The goal here is to save Sun Ce, but the most common way to fail is by letting Sun Quan die.

There are two key objectives. First, head southwest on the map where phantom soldiers, including Zhang Jiao, will emerge. They won’t appear until Sun Ce captures the central western base and gets lost in the fog. Until then, focus on aiding Sun Quan—failing to do so means he’ll be forced to retreat during the second part, resulting in mission failure.

To assist Sun Quan, secure the base immediately ahead and the base to the south, while taking out enemies in the middle area before Sun Ce gets lost. Ideally, you want Sun Quan advancing north (where he has allies and is less likely to face heavy fighting) before pursuing Sun Ce.

After completing this, move slightly north from Zhang Jiao to find a hidden cave, visible in the top left of the lowest ringed path on the map. Inside, you’ll encounter Bailuan. This will be one of the toughest battles, as he drops ice shards after reaching two-thirds health and summons phantoms at one-third. Once you defeat him, another ‘Fate Altered’ message will appear; however, this time you must finish the battle rather than it marking the end.

If both Sun Jian and Sun Ce are saved, you are now locked into the true ending path and simply need to finish the game.

    Wei Ending (Cao Cao’s Path)

The Cao Cao true ending is the toughest challenge in the game. You need to complete three missions, each requiring specific actions to proceed, and the first challenge, Escape from Wei Castle in Chapter Four, has the most demanding time constraints.

While the battles are not overly tough, we recommend playing on Historian difficulty since timing is crucial, and you can’t afford any setbacks. The mission aims to facilitate Cao Cao’s escape, and you must ensure that Dian Wei survives to achieve the true ending.

How To Save Dian Wei At Escape From Wei Castle

At the start of this battle, take control of the northwest base by crossing the river and defeating the general there. This makes it easier for the laddermen later. Next, rush to the northeast base. You need to secure both bases within four minutes to stay on track. After gaining these bases, return to the map’s center and eliminate the generals there; your allies will assist, but you have around two minutes. At some point, the laddermen will appear—immediately go to them even if the middle area isn’t clear.

When the ladders are set up (and you should be across the river when they rise), enter the castle and take down Zhang Xiu, Jia Xu, and Zhang Quan. Zhang Xiu may attempt to flee outside, so having allies in the middle area to help you slow him down is essential. You may want to engage him first, but don’t overlook the potential damage caused by taking out the other two together. Regardless of your strategy, you must accomplish this within about two minutes, for a total of eight minutes.

Next, progress deeper into the castle and defeat Huche’er in under two minutes, meaning the entire mission should be completed within ten minutes; if he refers to you saving Cao Cao’s bodyguard, you’re on time. If not, you’ll need to start over. Defeating Huche’er should prompt Dian Wei to comment on the thinning enemy forces. If he doesn’t, you took too long, and the mission must be restarted. If you are successful, escape with Cao Cao and you will be a third of the way to the true ending.

How To Save Guo Jia At the Battle of Mt. Bailang

To keep Guo Jia alive, just keeping him as your companion isn’t enough. After starting the battle, quickly secure the base to the northwest, then head to the center and proceed to the next base while ignoring the enemy. After acquiring this base and defeating Yuan Mei and Nanlou, exit through the west gate to find Bailuan waiting.

The fight against Bailuan here is less challenging than on the Wu pathway, as he doesn’t drop ice regularly, and you have allies to help. Still, quickly vanquishing him is essential. After defeating him, you’ll hear one of two phrases. If he asks if you “really wish to pursue this path of blood,” or mentions buying enough time, you’re on the right track. If Guo Jia says it took “longer than expected,” you’ve veered off the true ending path and will need to restart.

When your forces launch an ambush just beyond the Bailuan fight, the ‘Fate Altered’ message will pop up. If it doesn’t appear, you’ve taken too long and need to replay. Complete this battle as normal, including another confrontation with Bailuan.

    Wei Ending Final Battle

Unlike Sun Jian’s Wu path, simply keeping Dian Wei and Guo Jia alive won’t be sufficient; they must both be secured for this final path to open. At the Battle of Chibi, Zhuge Liang will summon fire to destroy Cao Cao’s fleet, so you must rush to the prayer altar when the ship lands (located in the map’s southwest corner). Taking out generals along the way will be beneficial.

After reaching the rear of Cao Cao’s fleet, you’ll face Huang Gai. If you arrive too early, Guo Jia may comment on leaving. You just need to stay on the boat closer to the front. When Huang Gai reveals his betrayal, defeat him before he can burn the fleet to receive the ‘Fate Altered’ message. Finally, head back to shore and defeat Liu Bei and Sun Quan to complete the battle and achieve the true Wei ending.

  • Ultimate Lance Mastery in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Ultimate Lance Mastery in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The lance is the second-to-last weapon type you’ll unlock in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. At first, it seems similar to a spear, but lances emphasize penetrating enemy lines rather than executing combos. Most Battle Arts with a lance involve a forward thrust, enabling you to inflict heavy damage with a Heavy Attack while engaging multiple foes at once.

However, lances are designed for players who can handle a certain level of damage while using them, so it’s crucial to keep an eye on your health and know when to retreat.

Lance Moveset in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

When you hold down the Heavy Attack button, your character will go into a stance that allows them to “endure” incoming damage. This endurance builds up a red aura; using Heavy Attacks while the aura is active enhances those attacks before the aura disappears.

Bear in mind that enduring damage does not prevent it. Any damage taken while in the enduring stance will regenerate gradually over time, but if you take more damage before it has healed, it is permanently lost.

    Combo Attack
    1x Heavy Attack. Sweep attack.
3x Heavy Attack Sweep combo. Available at Proficiency 5.
Hold Heavy Attack. Shockwave, followed by a sweep. Endure: Maintain hold until you take enough damage to enhance the aura, enabling you to execute a sweeping combo that sends foes flying.
Block + Heavy Attack. Pushed back enemies in front of you. Endure: Hold the button until you’re damaged enough to fill the aura, allowing you to launch enemies and yourself for an aerial combo. Both versions are accessible at Proficiency 2.
Left Stick + Heavy Attack while Dodging. Short two-hit combo in the direction of the left stick after dodging. Endure: Hold the button to fire a shockwave in the same direction after filling the aura. Both versions available at Proficiency 3.
Heavy Attack during a Normal Attack. Forward slam attack.
Hold Heavy Attack during a Normal Attack. Spinning combo. Endure: Hold to improve the range and strength of the combo as you take damage to fill the aura.
Normal Attack in midair. Sweeping attack.
Heavy Attack in midair or on horseback. Ground slam. Dismounts if initiated from horseback.

    Lance Combat Tips

The extra damage gained from enduring attacks is determined by the amount of damage sustained rather than the number of attacks suffered. Therefore, it’s worthwhile to allow strong hits from officers if you can withstand them—you’ll pay them back soon enough!

Enduring attacks is generally slower than performing a regular combo of Normal Attacks; if you’re short on time, the lance’s extended reach can still facilitate a traditional approach effectively.

The optimal strategy with a lance is to charge into large enemy groups, absorb their hits, then retaliate with your enhanced attacks before backing off to parry and dodge until your endured damage regenerates. Once you narrow down to one-on-one encounters with officers, you can engage them in a more traditional manner.

    Best Lance Build

A late-game lance build on the menu screen of Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

The lance is a unique weapon in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, so take the time to review your loadout when equipping it.

Focus on acquiring lances with traits that enhance your Attack Power while lowering your Defense. This way, you’ll sustain more damage when enduring but can retaliate even more powerfully!

spear, the lance is one of the longest weapons in the game. Thus, it benefits significantly from the Oblivion Gem, which offers a percentage boost to weapon reach. The Wellspring Gem must be at a high level to be effective when you acquire any lances, but it can help lessen some of the damage you’ll take, especially if you charge into a large group of enemies.

The lance is likely the only weapon for which the Scorch Gem isn’t beneficial, as enduring attacks is more common than parrying in this case.

Crouching Tiger Strike can be unlocked by boosting the Peace rating in Jing Province to level 2. This Special Art is excellent for heavily damaging individual targets, like officers, and features one of the most entertaining animations in the game.

As always, consider keeping Palm Strike as a secondary Special Art.

Skirmisher Strike is a basic Battle Art for the lance similar to the gauntlets’ Elbow Strike. If you have enough Bravery, you can rapidly wear down enemies with repeated thrusts.

For your final slot, Relentless Charge is a solid option for breaking through enemy lines. Locking onto an officer with R3 allows you to focus the charge on them, dealing damage with each strike and significantly reducing their Fortitude.

  • Top Staff Build for Dynasty Warriors: Origins Unleashed

Top Staff Build for Dynasty Warriors: Origins Unleashed

The staff features some of the most impressive maneuvers in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. If you’re going into battle with just a staff against a horde of sword-wielding foes, you need to know how to wield it effectively. If you enjoy executing smart combos and staying agile in battle, the staff can be the most rewarding option in the game. However, if your preference is just to hit the attack button mindlessly and watch enemies fall, you might be disappointed with the staff’s effectiveness.

If dazzling enemy officers with swift strikes and strategic Battle Arts sounds enticing, continue reading to learn how to master the staff!

    Dynasty Warriors: Origins Staff Moveset

The staff stands out as the only weapon capable of performing an effectively infinite combo. By holding down the Heavy Attack button, you can keep the assault going until you release the button or get hit.

    Combo

    Attack

    Hold Heavy Attack (Standing Still).

Unleashes a rapid close-range melee combo until the button is released. You remain stationary during this attack.

Left Stick + Hold Heavy Attack (While Moving).

Executes repeated forward leaps and attacks until the button is released. You can shift direction while jumping by using the Left Stick.

Left Stick + Heavy Attack while Dodging.

Delivers a quick close-range melee combo while on the run until the button is released. You can turn but cannot stop while performing this attack.

Heavy Attack during a Normal Attack.

Performs a circular sweep attack. Continuing to hold the button automatically extends the combo.

    Block + Heavy Attack

Launches enemies in front of you, followed by a leap to pursue them. Holding the button initiates an aerial combo.

    Normal Attack while midair.

Delivers a horizontal strike. You can combo with one additional Normal Attack while airborne.

Heavy Attack while midair or on horseback.

Executes a gliding spin attack. If used from horseback, it results in dismounting.

    Staff Combat Tips

While the endless Heavy Attack combos are entertaining, it’s best not to rely on them too much. Instead, wait for the perfect moment to strike. The moving combos are effective for slicing through hordes of enemies, but the stationary combo should be reserved for specific scenarios, like following up a parry or utilizing a Special Art.

When you successfully counter an enemy with a well-timed parry or a Special Art to interrupt a strong attack, they’ll become briefly staggered. Quickly move next to them and initiate a stationary combo to land multiple hits before they recover. This strategy will deal significant damage and usually reduce an extra shield’s worth of their Fortitude.

If it’s the final shield, hold the button until just before your Assault opportunity runs out to maximize damage.

The staff also offers numerous Battle Arts that can launch enemies. Make the most of its aerial multi-attack combos and glide to defeat opponents while they’re vulnerable in the air.

    Best Staff Build

Creating a build that focuses on the staff’s aerial combo capabilities allows you to take full advantage of its distinct features.

The Vortex Gem significantly boosts damage against airborne enemies, making it an ideal choice for staff builds. If it’s not adequately leveled, you should collect some Pyroxene and Moongrass to enhance it.

Meanwhile, several high-tier versions of the staff come with traits that extend the input window for parries. Thus, the Scorch Gem serves as a valuable secondary option, increasing your overall damage during parry combos.

You can purchase Vaulting Leap from shops starting in Chapter 3. This ability costs just one Bravery and launches enemies into the air, allowing for easy air combo follow-ups. Once you reach Proficiency 6, you can follow up with Soaring Sky Dance or even start with that move to bring multiple foes into the air.

While you’re working towards unlocking those Battle Arts, keep Chaotic Flurry equipped when available at Proficiency 4. This short-term rush attack functions similarly to the Running Combo, and its status as a Special Art enables it to interrupt critical enemy attacks. Its agility can disrupt enemy formations if used wisely!

You can even execute Chaotic Flurry from the air, making it effective against certain jumping attacks.

Since Chaotic Flurry requires three Bravery, it’s advisable to have the reliable Palm Strike equipped as a backup. With this setup, you pose a threat both on the ground and in the air, keeping your enemies on their toes!

  • Mastering Gem Crafting in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Mastering Gem Crafting in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Gems represent a distinct type of equipment that can be boosted by crafting additional Gems of the same variety. These Gems offer valuable bonuses that are significantly enhanced when combined with the appropriate weapon. However, the crafting process relies heavily on luck, so you’ll need to engage in it frequently to elevate your preferred Gems.

While the outcomes of your Gem crafting might seem random, there are ways to improve your chances. This guide will walk you through the fundamentals of Gem crafting and provide tips on how to enhance your Gems more effectively.

    How to Craft Gems

To craft Gems, visit any Inn or Tent on the World Map. Select the Create Gems option from the Inn Menu, and you will be directed to the crafting interface.

Crafting becomes available once you obtain your first set of Pyroxene shortly after your initial encounter with Zhuhe.

Crafting Gems requires Pyroxene; each Pyroxene stone translates to one Gem. You can use the D-Pad to choose how many Gems to craft at once, limited to the amount of Pyroxene in your possession.

The Gems produced in each crafting session will be randomly selected from five different types. Occasionally, a single Pyroxene will yield a Satisfying Result, resulting in three copies of one particular Gem instead of just one.

Every copy of a Gem contributes to leveling up that Gem, boosting its effectiveness when equipped. The more of a single type you create, the stronger that Gem becomes.

    How to Acquire Pyroxene

You can obtain Pyroxene occasionally as training rewards or through letters, but most of it will come from two primary sources:

    • Defeating a Thief in battle grants 5 Pyroxene. Thieves generally appear against Bandits and other outlaw groups, though not too frequently.
    • You can also pick up Pyroxene on the World Map. Look for orange crystals that slowly respawn, making it worthwhile to search the area from time to time.

    What Are Gems For?

There are five types of Gems, and you can equip one at a time. Choose the right type for your character’s build or the specific challenges ahead to gain an upper hand.

    Types of Gems

    Gem

    Effect When Equipped

    Oblivion Gem

Increases the reach of all attacks by 10%. Bonus increases by 1% with each Gem Level.

    Vortex Gem

Boosts damage dealt in air combos by 10%. Bonus increases by 1% with each Gem Level.

    Scorch Gem

Increases counterattack damage of parries by 10%. Bonus increases by 1% with each Gem Level.

    Wellspring Gem

Heals 30 health for every 100 KO’s in battle. Healing increases by 5-6 with each Gem Level.

    Ascendance Gem

Provides a 30% chance to automatically block attacks from enemy Officers. Chance increases by 1% with each Gem Level.

    Tips for Gem Crafting

After you unlock the Eyes of the Sacred Bird ability during Chapter One, you will have a chance to sense a glimmer in the Pyroxene each time you craft Gems. When this occurs, three Gem types will shine. The next batch you create will only include those three types, rather than the normal five.

Completing Yuanhua’s side quest in Chapter Three enables you to gather Moongrass on the World Map. Using Moongrass limits the glimmers to two Gem types, enhancing your crafting precision.

You can level up your most-used Gems by holding onto your Pyroxene until you spot a glimmer that signals them, then creating a batch with a lower likelihood of receiving Gems you’re not interested in. Here are two ways to approach this:

    • Leaving the crafting screen and returning later until you find the desired Glimmer is time-intensive but maximizes your overall chances.
    • Alternatively, you can craft Gems one at a time until a Glimmer appears, then create a larger batch. A new Glimmer opportunity arises after every batch, regardless of its size. This method consumes more Pyroxene but can help level up other Gems that might be beneficial if you decide to switch builds later on.
