Dogs may share more with humans than just living in the same homes and following similar routines. A recent study found that the biological markers linked to lifespan in humans also appear in dogs, suggesting that both species might age in surprisingly similar ways. This research is part of the Dog Aging Project, a long-term effort tracking pet dogs throughout their lives.
Researchers discovered that specific molecules in dogs’ blood are connected to whether they live longer or have a shorter lifespan. Interestingly, these patterns closely resemble those identified in human studies. These molecules are called metabolites—tiny chemicals produced by normal bodily functions that can reveal what’s happening at the cellular level. By analyzing these metabolites, scientists aim to better understand why aging occurs and what influences health and lifespan.
Blood samples from dogs enrolled in the project were analyzed, with owners providing regular updates on their dogs’ health, lifestyle, and behavior. Some owners also submitted biological samples yearly. The scientists examined thousands of metabolites within the blood samples and looked for patterns associated with lifespan. Rather than focusing on individual metabolites, they studied groups of these chemicals, forming what they describe as a biological “fingerprint.” Some fingerprints correlated with longer life, while others were associated with earlier death.
These patterns, known as biomarkers, don’t necessarily cause aging or disease but can indicate key biological processes underway. Understanding why these biomarkers appear could eventually lead to ways to promote healthier aging and mitigate age-related decline.
One of the most remarkable findings was how closely the results in dogs aligned with data from five extensive human studies that also used metabolite profiles to predict lifespan. In every case, the patterns matched remarkably well. This overlap is exciting because it implies that insights gained in human aging research could help improve canine health, and vice versa—studies on dogs may provide valuable clues about human aging.
Dogs are especially useful in aging research since they live alongside humans and share similar environments, diets, and activity levels. Their shorter lifespans—around 12 to 13 years compared to the human lifespan often extending into the 70s or beyond—allow scientists to observe aging processes and outcomes much more rapidly.
The researchers emphasize that their findings are just the beginning. They’ve uncovered important clues about aging and are eager to explore new directions. For dog owners, the message is clear: habits that promote healthy aging in people are likely beneficial for dogs as well. Offering a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and encouraging dogs to stay active both physically and mentally could help ensure longer, healthier lives for both dogs and their owners.
