    Completing Baldur’s Gate 3: Solving a Five-Year-Old Leak

Five years ago, before Baldur’s Gate 3 was officially released, Larian Studios’ publishing director, Michael ‘Cromwelp’ Douse, had a few too many drinks at a bar and wrote the release date on a whisky bottle. It would have been a strange leak if someone had discovered it, but no one did.

According to GamesRadar+, Douse thinks it’s lucky that this careless act slipped by, as it could have led to problems for him and the studio. He tweeted, “In retrospect, it’s funny and not a legal issue. Maybe I did it again? Who knows.” This makes me wonder if other developers do similar things. Should I be looking through whisky bottles in bars across the U.S. for the release date of Half-Life 3? But I value my health too much for that.

But It’d Have Been The Wrong Baldur’s Gate 3 Release Date

Many people noted that even if someone had found the bottle and recognized it as being from a Larian developer, it wouldn’t have been the right date anyway.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was launched early on PC to avoid competing with Starfield, which was expected to be a huge release. However, the PS5 version was delayed to September 6, and the Xbox version was pushed back even further to December 7. Whatever Douse wrote five years ago would not have reflected these last-minute changes.

Regardless, it’s a fun story and feels like an odd conspiracy you’d expect to hear among fans waiting for Silksong. Who knows? Maybe Team Cherry has hidden the release date in a bottle somewhere too, and while fans analyze every little clip from events, there’s a bottle in a bar waiting to spill the beans. Probably not, but every hopeful fan can dream.

One of the most legendary video game compilations in history is The Orange Box, which featured Half-Life 2, its subsequent episodes, and two other notable games: Portal and Team Fortress 2. This collection was a mainstay in game retail outlets for many years, primarily due to the exceptional quality of the titles included, and its striking orange packaging made it stand out on shelves.

In a recent TikTok, former Valve writer Chet Faliszek shared an interesting tidbit: The Orange Box was nearly packaged in a plain white box. He explained that the color choice was almost dull and completely devoid of flair, with the only distinguishing feature being the game titles.

Faliszek recounted a meeting where executives argued for a “refined” and “elegant” design, which was envisioned as a simplistic white box for the launch of Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1 (the other titles were added later). He described the proposed design as “nothing on it” except perhaps the game title itself.

“Going into this meeting, the box design was crucial because it represented the game in retail stores. We weren’t fully trusting Steam at that moment… this was back in 2007. The packaging needed to convey value,” he noted. The pitch for a stark white design didn’t sit well with the developers present.

“We all thought, ‘This is ridiculous. Just plain stupid.’ Even though these were high-ranking individuals presenting this notion, they faced serious pushback,” he continued, reflecting on how the reactions from his team weren’t positive and that it became a running joke during the meeting.

While those who promoted the white box design didn’t vanish from Valve’s records—in fact, they contributed to the iconic box art for Left 4 Dead—Faliszek pointed out how this anecdote exemplifies Valve’s culture of cross-team collaboration that has led to the creation of some of the most celebrated first-person shooters in gaming. Additional insights and tales from Valve’s rich history can be found in the recently released documentary celebrating the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2.

IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman, has terminated its collaboration with mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor after a Dublin civil court ruled he was liable for a sexual assault that occurred in 2018.

Last week, McGregor was ordered to pay approximately 250,000 euros (about $257,000) to the accuser in a civil lawsuit. Prosecutors did not pursue criminal charges in this case, leading McGregor to dismiss the allegations as “full of lies.”

“In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately,” the studio announced on X. “We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications.”

The associated downloadable content (DLC) has been removed from sale, and any related video content has been taken down from YouTube.

The former UFC champion has a long history of controversies involving alcohol, driving offenses, and other public incidents that predate his collaboration with IO Interactive on the World of Assassination DLC. He has been arrested in the past, including a notable incident in Florida where he was charged for allegedly assaulting a fan. Although charges were dropped, he also pleaded guilty to assault in 2019 for an altercation at a Dublin pub.

Hitman 3 evolved into Hitman: World of Assassination in 2023, with IO Interactive introducing DLC featuring various celebrities as elusive targets. In this content, McGregor portrayed a character known as The Disruptor, an affluent MMA fighter who comes into conflict with a tech CEO, leading to Agent 47 being tasked with eliminating him. Participants gained access to exclusive cosmetic items, including the iconic fur coat and a cane, alongside a two-level Arcade contract called The Ostentatious.
