    In Minecraft, tools have remained pretty consistent, especially in the early stages of the game. Players typically progress from wood to stone, then to iron for tools, while armor jumps from leather to iron as well.

    However, the recent copper update has introduced exciting changes. Copper tools now fill the gap between stone and iron tools, and copper armor fits between leather and iron as well. This makes the early game experience significantly different and adds to the excitement of discovering copper in your adventures.

    This new update is currently available in the Minecraft Preview, which you’ll need to download to experience the changes until the official release.

    Copper is a common resource that can be found at elevations above Y-coordinate zero. You typically get more than one copper ore per block, and smelting each ore yields one copper ingot. To mine copper, make sure to use a stone pickaxe; using a wooden one will destroy the ore.

    The crafting method for copper tools mirrors that of other tools, using copper instead of iron or other materials.

    To create a full set of copper tools, you’ll need a total of 11 copper ingots.

    How to Craft Copper Armor

    Copper armor offers more protection than leather armor but less than iron armor. Since copper is easier to find than iron, crafting a full suit of copper armor is much more accessible.

    However, when you acquire enough iron, most players will likely prefer to use iron armor instead of sticking with copper since armor typically lasts longer than tools.

    How to Craft a Copper Chest

    A Copper Chest is essential if you plan to use the new Copper Golem in your crafting setup. The Copper Golem collects items from a Copper Chest and distributes them to nearby chests, potentially creating an automatic sorting system.

    There are two methods to create a Copper Chest:

    • Build a Copper Golem by placing a Carved Pumpkin on top of a Copper Block, creating a Copper Golem above a Copper Chest.
    • In a Crafting Table, surround a regular chest with Copper Ingots, requiring eight ingots in total.

    Copper Golems will look for any nearby Copper Chest, and you can also craft a double chest using copper.

    How to Craft a Copper Golem

    To create a Copper Golem, you need to place a carved pumpkin on top of a copper block, which requires a total of nine Copper and one Pumpkin.

    You will probably need more than one Copper Golem for a well-organized resource system, but the exact number will depend on your setup.

    This process will result in both a Copper Golem and a Copper Chest. To set up more Copper Chests, you can create additional Copper Golems or craft them by surrounding a chest with Copper at a crafting table.

    How to Use a Copper Golem

    Copper Golems take items from a nearby Copper Chest and sort them into regular chests. They will only distribute items that match the type in the receiving chest. If the intended chest contains a different item, the Golem will simply move on to the next one.

    If the chest is empty, the Copper Golem will deposit the item there.

    Keep in mind that Copper Golems don’t remember where they placed items. If they grab the same item type and check chests again, they might accidentally place it in a different available chest.

    Step 1: Start by crafting a wooden chest of any type.

    Step 2: Place the chest on your crafting table and surround it with copper ingots, as illustrated in the accompanying image.

    Step 3: Remove the completed copper chest and place it wherever you’d like.

    The fascinating aspect of the Copper Golem is its ability to take items you’ve placed in a copper chest and automatically sort them into your regular storage chests.

    Additionally, thanks to the update, copper can now be fashioned into tools, weapons, and armor, providing you with ample opportunities to utilize this resource.

    Step 1: Begin by placing any copper block on the ground.

    Step 2: Take a carved pumpkin or Jack o’lantern and position it atop the copper block to form the Golem’s head.

    Step 3: Watch as your Copper Golem springs to life!

    While Copper Golems won’t engage in battles for you, they have their own unique functions that can be beneficial around your base. They can assist in sorting your items by collecting objects left in copper chests and moving them to standard ones. Additionally, a fun feature is their ability to oxidize over time, gradually changing from their shiny copper appearance to a bluish tint. This alteration is purely cosmetic, though—you won’t notice any difference in functionality as time passes.

    Another option is to acquire it from armourers and blacksmiths by stealing. To do this, wait until night when the shops are closed and the merchants are asleep. Then, sneak into their shops, pick the lock, and quietly gather the materials you need. Just be cautious; if the guards catch you, there will be consequences.

    If you want to avoid the risks of stealing, the easiest and safest option is to buy copper legally. Simply visit any blacksmith marked on the map and purchase it for a small fee.

    • Blacksmiths: There are many blacksmiths spread out across the map, most of whom sell copper. If you’re just starting out, head to the Kuttenberg area, where you’ll find several blacksmiths who will offer you copper.
    • Armourers: Throughout the game world, you can find numerous armourers, almost all of whom have copper in stock. Check your map, locate a nearby armourer, and visit them to buy copper at an affordable price.

    Copper is found specifically on planets that orbit yellow stars. Different star classes host different resources, so you won’t generally find copper on planets orbiting stars of a different category.

    You can identify star colors using the Galaxy Map before jumping into another system.

    If you need color-blind settings, go to Options > Accessibility > Galaxy Map Colour Filter to apply a suitable color filter.

    When you land on a planet orbiting a yellow star, use your visor to scan for resource deposits. Once you pinpoint a deposit, mark its location on your HUD. Use your Terrain Manipulator in Mine mode to gather copper once you reach the deposit.

    Purchasing Copper from Galactic Trade Terminals

    Some Galactic Trade Terminals may sell copper for around 56 Credits. While this price is fairly low in less inflated systems, gathering copper yourself is generally more efficient unless you’re in a hurry.

    Certain minerals, especially those found in caves, might also contain copper as a secondary resource. However, this method is not reliable or common since these occurrences are quite rare. When it does happen, it can provide a nice surplus of copper for your future needs.

    To find out if a mineral contains copper, scan it with your visor. The scan results will show which elements it provides. With experience, you’ll quickly learn which minerals are valuable and which are not.

    Automating Copper Collection

    You can also collect copper using Autonomous Mining Units and Mineral Extractors. Each requires specific resource nodes to function, but both options allow you to accumulate copper passively while you focus on other tasks.

    For the Mineral Extractor, you’ll need to locate a Deep-Level Mineral Deposit. Use the Survey modification on your Analysis Visor for this, which is different from gathering resources from the surface where Autonomous Mining Units can be utilized.

    How To Create Copper in a Refiner

    Copper can also be synthesized in a Refiner, although this method is not very practical. If you have an excess of chromatic metal and want to double your copper stock, you can use this recipe:

    • x1 Copper + x1 Chromatic Metal = 2x Copper

    Chromatic metal tends to be more broadly useful than copper. In most cases, you’ll be better off picking up more copper rather than using your chromatic metal for this, unless circumstances make copper harder to find.

    What Is Copper Used For?

    Copper plays a role in many crafting recipes. You’ll use copper to upgrade specific modules on your suit or multi-tool, and also for creating unique items such as Bronze Statues and the initial AtlasPass.

    You can refine copper into other materials; notably, you can convert copper into chromatic metal, or combine it with other similar metals for additional chromatic metal recipes.

    Keep in mind that copper cannot be collected from asteroids like platinum and gold.

    In the latest Odyssey update, Copper can be found in caves located in the Dry Valley, including Lava Caves, and also in caves within the Grasslands.

    To gather Copper, you will need an Uncommon Pickaxe. The recent addition of Component-based Crafting allows for a wider variety of materials when creating items.

    As you choose your crafting materials, make sure the recipe shows that you’re crafting an Uncommon Pickaxe (or a higher tier) on the right side of the screen.

    How to Create Copper Bars

    After collecting Copper, you’ll need to turn it into Copper Bars. However, you first need to unlock the Metal Smelter workstation.

    To craft the Metal Smelter, you’ll need the following materials:
