    Major Study Shows Drug Safeguards Kidneys in Non-Diabetics

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a persistent condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to function properly. Early on, many individuals experience few symptoms, but over time, the disease can lead to kidney failure and elevate the risk of heart problems. One of the primary goals in nephrology is developing treatments that slow down this progression.

    A recent international study offers promising news. Researchers discovered that finerenone, a medication already prescribed for some patients with diabetic kidney disease, can also offer benefits to those with CKD who do not have diabetes. These findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

    The study, known as FIND-CKD, was led by Professor Hiddo Lambers Heerspink from the University Medical Center Groningen. It involved 1,584 adults from various countries who all had decreased kidney function and excess protein in their urine. Those taking finerenone experienced a slower decline in eGFR, meaning their kidneys maintained better function longer than those on the placebo.

About 13.9% of patients on finerenone faced major kidney events, heart failure hospitalizations, or cardiovascular death, compared to 16.9% in the placebo group.     Previously, most large studies on finerenone focused on individuals with type 2 diabetes. This research indicates that the medicine may be effective for a broader population because more than half of all people with CKD do not have diabetes.

    One of the biggest hurdles in cancer treatment is the development of resistance to drugs. While initial therapies can effectively reduce tumors and slow disease progression, cancer cells often adapt over time, finding ways to survive despite ongoing treatment.

    This issue is especially prevalent in advanced kidney cancer, where many patients eventually run out of effective treatment options.

    Researchers at Mayo Clinic have shared promising early results from a clinical trial that may help overcome this challenge. Their study explored a new experimental drug called darlifarnib, used in combination with cabozantinib, a standard therapy for advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer in adults.

    Clear cell renal cell carcinoma accounts for the majority of kidney cancer cases.     Psychedelic Compound May Aid Persistent Depression Recovery

    Depression remains one of the most widespread mental health issues globally, impacting individuals’ emotions, thoughts, and daily functioning. Although many find relief through antidepressants, therapy, or a combination of both, some continue to struggle despite trying various treatments. This persistent form of depression, known as treatment-resistant depression, is often among the most challenging to address.

    For those afflicted, symptoms tend to linger for years. They may experience ongoing sadness, loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, fatigue, sleep disturbances, trouble concentrating, and feelings of despair.

    Because traditional treatments don’t work for everyone, researchers are actively exploring new options. One emerging treatment gaining attention is psilocybin—a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain types of mushrooms.

    Over the past decade, multiple carefully designed clinical studies have indicated that psilocybin can help alleviate depressive symptoms, even in cases unresponsive to standard treatments. Each patient underwent between one and four supervised psilocybin sessions as part of their treatment plan. The team then evaluated changes in depression symptoms before and after the therapy.

    Results showed substantial improvement. Using clinician-rated depression scales, scores dropped significantly post-treatment. On average, patients’ scores decreased from about 31 out of 60 before treatment to around 20 out of 60 within six weeks after their last session. Patients also rated their own feelings of depression, which declined from an average of 32 out of 63 to 23 out of 63 after treatment. These changes suggest both healthcare providers and patients perceived meaningful symptom relief.

    Side effects were monitored throughout. They occurred in 30 of the 40 treatment sessions, but most were mild and temporary—common issues included fatigue, headaches, and tearfulness. Crucially, no serious or long-lasting adverse effects were observed.

    Scientists believe psilocybin functions differently from traditional antidepressants.     Scientists have reported promising long-term results from a study combining a personalized mRNA vaccine with a leading immunotherapy drug to help prevent melanoma from returning.

    The research, conducted by investigators at NYU Langone Health and its Perlmutter Cancer Center, indicates that this treatment approach could significantly improve survival rates and lower the risk of cancer metastasis. The findings were shared at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting and published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

    Cancer therapies have seen dramatic changes over recent years. Once, options were primarily limited to surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Today, immunotherapy has become a cornerstone treatment, leveraging the body’s own immune system to fight cancer more effectively.

    From 2019 to 2021, the clinical trial enrolled patients in the U.S. and Australia. All had previously undergone surgery to remove melanoma. Researchers compared the outcomes of patients who received both the personalized vaccine and pembrolizumab with those who received only pembrolizumab.

    After five years, the results showed a clear advantage for the combination group. Nearly 70% remained cancer-free, while less than 50% of those treated with just pembrolizumab achieved the same. The combined approach cut the risk of recurrence or death by nearly half.

    Additionally, patients receiving the combined therapy were less likely to experience the spread of melanoma to distant organs—an essential factor since metastatic melanoma is much harder to treat and accounts for many cancer-related deaths. Survival rates were also notably higher among recipients of the personalized vaccine.

    These findings provide some of the strongest evidence to date that mRNA technology can be effectively used against cancer.

    While mRNA gained widespread attention during the pandemic, its potential in oncology has been under investigation for years. One major advantage of mRNA is its adaptability—scientists can quickly design treatments tailored to the genetic makeup of an individual’s tumor.

    This personalized approach is especially promising for cancers like melanoma, which often harbor numerous mutations. The more unique markers a tumor has, the more targets the immune system can be trained to recognize and attack.

    The safety profile observed in the study was encouraging, with most side effects being manageable, including fatigue, chills, and injection site discomfort. No serious safety issues emerged during the trial.

    Despite these positive results, experts emphasize that further research is necessary. Since this was a Phase IIb trial, larger studies are needed before the treatment can become a standard option.
