Ingredient labels often fall short in revealing everything inside personal care and cleaning products like shampoos, sunscreens, or baby lotions. A recent laboratory study showed that nearly every tested product contained at least one chemical not listed on its label. Alarmingly, many of these unlisted chemicals are known or suspected to pose health risks.
Some products also contained substances that blatantly contradict their marketing claims, such as “phthalate-free,” “natural,” or “hypoallergenic.” The research was published in the journal Environment & Health, with Jenna Hua, founder of the Million Marker Research Institute, serving as the senior author. Her organization focuses on studying environmental chemical exposures and their potential health impacts.
Researchers evaluated 113 products spanning 12 categories, including sunscreens, baby lotions, shampoos, soaps, and household cleaners. They aimed to compare the ingredients listed on packaging with the actual chemicals detected during testing. The results revealed a significant discrepancy: while most products listed around 16 ingredients, lab tests identified an average of 51 different chemicals.
Overall, 98% of the products contained at least one chemical that wasn’t disclosed on the label, and about 85% contained unlisted substances that could potentially impact health—such as phthalates, parabens, fragrance components, silicone contaminants, or preservatives like BHT.
Some of these chemicals, notably certain phthalates and parabens, are recognized for disrupting hormone activity. Scientific research links these compounds to reproductive issues, developmental problems, metabolic disruptions, and even some cancers. However, the presence of potentially harmful chemicals doesn’t necessarily mean a product is dangerous; risk depends on exposure levels, frequency, absorption, and individual sensitivity.
Interestingly, the study found that marketing language isn’t a reliable indicator of safety. Products labeled “natural,” “nontoxic,” or “organic” sometimes contained chemicals that raised health concerns. More than 25% of tested products had ingredients that directly contradicted claims made on packaging or websites—for example, phthalates in products marketed as phthalate-free or synthetic chemicals in items labeled as 100% natural. Some products advertised as fragrance-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, or hypoallergenic still contained these substances upon testing.
There are several reasons for these inconsistencies. Often, chemicals enter products unintentionally through raw materials, manufacturing equipment, packaging, storage, or chemical reactions during production. Manufacturers might also alter raw material compositions without changing the ingredient list, resulting in undetected chemicals that could be contaminants or byproducts.
To identify these hidden chemicals, scientists employed broad-spectrum testing methods that scan for numerous substances simultaneously, rather than just a targeted list of expected ingredients. This approach detected over 3,100 chemical signals and identified 303 different compounds with varying levels of certainty. Such comprehensive testing is crucial because traditional safety assessments often rely solely on declared ingredients, potentially missing substances consumers are still exposed to in the final product.
The researchers advocate for more direct testing of finished products, suggesting that broad chemical screening be incorporated into standard safety checks—similar to testing for bacterial contamination or preservative effectiveness. Despite recent legislative efforts, such as the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, routine, wide-ranging testing for unexpected chemical contaminants remains uncommon in the U.S.
While these findings highlight a flaw in relying solely on ingredient labels, they shouldn’t be taken as evidence that most products pose health risks. The study focused on chemical presence, not on actual exposure levels or whether these chemicals pose real-world health threats. Additionally, the specific brands and products tested weren’t disclosed in detail, though they are expected to be referenced in subsequent reports.
Nevertheless, the study underscores the importance of verifying what’s actually in consumer products, rather than assuming labels are complete. Improved testing methods could help manufacturers catch contamination earlier and reinforce consumer confidence in product claims.
