Exclusive: See Early-Stage CGI from Captain America: Brave New World

Digital Domain, a visual effects studio, has unveiled an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a key moment from Captain America: Brave New World, presented by Digital Trends. This intense scene, lasting over eight minutes, features Captain America (played by Anthony Mackie) and the Falcon (Danny Ramirez) stepping into a dogfight above the Pacific Ocean between US and Japanese forces, an encounter that risks escalating into war.

The standout aspect of this sequence is its reliance on computer-generated imagery (CGI). “We captured plenty of footage with Anthony Mackie suspended on wires, but in the end, the entire scene was rendered using CGI,” explained Cameron Ward, the previsualization supervisor at Digital Domain.

In the previsualization clip, viewers can see the foundational CGI work that constructed the expansive ocean setting from the ground up. According to Ward, the primary hurdle was not the creation of the vast environment, but rather the rapid speeds at which the characters and objects were moving.

“The major challenge was the velocity of the action,” Ward stated. “We had missiles zipping through the sky at 600 miles per hour above the open sea, which we had to fabricate from scratch. We needed to position our camera to give the sensation that Captain America was flying past at that speed pursuing them. So the question was: how do we convey that visually?”

    Crafting Realism Beyond Characters

Another significant task for the team was the creation of clouds. Digital Domain developed a proprietary cloud shader tool designed to replicate the sizes, shading, textures, and opacity levels found in natural clouds. By layering four to six cloud renderings, they achieved the varying brightness and depth characteristic of real clouds.

Light and shadow played a critical role in enhancing realism, especially over the reflective ocean surface. The team meticulously replicated the way sunlight bounces off the water, creating shadows to ensure a lifelike appearance. Each frame involving a jet or character soaring through the air was scrutinized to render accurate shadows on the ocean below.

Before taking on Captain America, Ward had contributed to several major projects, including The Last of Us, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Thunderbolts. He noted that Brave New World was his most ambitious undertaking thus far. Digital Domain dedicated a full year to the project. “I’ve been with Digital Domain for five years,” he remarked. “This is the largest sequence I’ve ever worked on. As development progressed, it became considerably more CGI than we initially planned, especially as we ran into issues with reflections in certain shots.”

Captain America: Brave New World is now available for home viewing. The Marvel film is set to release on DVD and Blu-ray on May 13, with Disney+ subscribers able to stream it starting May 28.

Anthony Mackie Addresses Captain America Comments: ‘I’m Proud’

Actor Anthony Mackie recently spoke out about the backlash he received from his remarks about Captain America.

While promoting Captain America: Brave New World in Italy, Mackie stated that the character does not embody what “America” stands for.

“To me, Captain America represents a lot of different principles, and I don’t believe the term ‘America’ should be one of them,” Mackie explained in a video shared on social media. “It’s about a man who honors his commitments and embodies dignity, integrity, and reliability.”

Anthony Mackie explains what Captain America represents for him:

“Captain America symbolizes many concepts & I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who shows honor, dignity, and integrity.”

This clip went viral and sparked criticism from various social media users, who questioned Mackie’s assertion that his character doesn’t represent America. In response, he clarified his statements on Tuesday, affirming that he is a “proud American” and intended to convey that Captain America’s values resonate with people universally, not just those in the United States.

“Let me clarify: I’m a proud American and carrying the shield of such an iconic hero is a tremendous honor,” Mackie shared via Instagram Stories. “I have deep respect for all who have served our nation. Captain America embodies qualities that are relatable to individuals worldwide.”

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, assumed the mantle of Captain America, carrying on the legacy of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. This transition was further explored in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where Sam grappled with his new role before ultimately embracing it.

As the new Captain America, Sam will face his first challenge in Captain America: Brave New World. After a meeting with U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford, Sam is tasked with uncovering a plot behind an international crisis and thwarting those responsible to avert global chaos. The film also features Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson among its cast.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.

Mastering Captain America in Marvel Rivals: A How-To Guide

Marvel Rivals centers around three main classes: Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist. Vanguards serve as the tanks, Duelists focus on dealing damage, and Strategists offer healing and buffs to support the team.

In this game, Captain America takes on the role of a Vanguard, tasked with safeguarding the team and ensuring longevity so that enemies can’t seize objectives. If you’re keen on using this character, we’ve got a comprehensive guide to help you get started with Captain America and make your learning experience smoother.

    Captain America Overview

As a medium-difficulty Vanguard, Captain America excels in shielding allies and providing them with health and speed boosts. His key ability, Living Legend, allows him to absorb and deflect enemy attacks in random directions.

In addition, his basic attack, Sentinel Strike, lets him strike foes with his shield, dealing damage, while the Vibranium Energy Saw ability allows him to hurl his shield at enemies. He can activate Leading Dash to increase his movement speed and leap into the air with Fearless Leap.

His Liberty Dash enables him to charge at foes, and Super-Soldier Slam lets him come crashing down on enemies, sending them flying. Finally, with his ultimate move, Freedom Charge, he clears a path for his allies, giving everyone a health and speed boost.

If you’re excited to lead your team as Captain America, here’s a summary of his abilities:

    Normal Attack

    Sentinel Strike

Damages foes with a basic attack. Every second attack triggers a shield throw that ricochets between up to four enemies.

    Abilities

    Freedom Charge

Clears a path for allies who receive a health and movement speed boost. Both Living Legend and Leading Dash gain extra power during this time, able to launch enemies when the ultimate is active.

    Leading Dash

Boosts movement speed and allows Captain America to jump into the air.

    Vibranium Energy Saw

Throws the shield at foes that can bounce off targets while dealing substantial damage.

    Super-Soldier Slam

    Team-Up Abilities

    Charged Aegis

Gains an electrifying upgrade when teaming up with Thor, allowing his shield to shock enemies.

Tips and Tricks for Playing Captain America

Overview of Captain America in Marvel Rivals.

Given that Captain America is a Vanguard unit, maintaining the right position is crucial. Overextending into enemy territory can leave your team exposed. Unlike some other Vanguards, he possesses a set of abilities that allow for a more aggressive playstyle.

At the start of a match, head towards the objective using Liberty Dash, as early positioning can offer a significant advantage. Once engaged in battle, you can either employ Living Legend to redirect incoming attacks or get aggressive with your Vibranium Energy Saw by throwing your shield at enemies.

The Vibranium Energy Saw ability is especially effective when foes are bunched together, though it can still be used on single targets to inflict damage from afar.

If the opposing side has a lot of melee characters closing in on you, make use of the Sentinel Strike ability. After landing two successive hits, you can automatically launch your shield, both damaging and preventing enemies from clustering together.

When using the Living Legend ability, the reflected projectiles can also hit foes. Aim your shield towards enemies when possible, as the return fire can intimidate them.

If the enemy team is filled with ranged attackers, prioritize using the Living Legend ability. This will allow you to deflect their shots, potentially halting their fire for a while. But be careful to save it for heavy gunfire, as it’s your sole defensive ability.

If you spot weakened enemies, feel free to use Liberty Dash to close the gap and finish them off quickly before retreating to your team. You can also utilize this skill to return to the objective if you find yourself knocked out during a scuffle.

How to Effectively Use Captain America’s Ultimate

The Freedom Charge ability is particularly powerful, creating a pathway for allies that grants both speed and health boosts. Ideally, launch this ability when your whole team is with you and you’re pressing the attack against enemies. The health boost keeps your team resilient, while the speed boost allows you to chase down low-health targets.

Avoid using it if your entire team isn’t backing you; it doesn’t offer offensive advantages, and the health boosts won’t help you survive if you rush in against multiple foes. Alternatively, it can be employed defensively if you’re on the brink of defeat and need a quick health boost, though this tactic is generally not favored.

  • Ultimate Guide to Captain America: First Avenger Commander Deck

Ultimate Guide to Captain America: First Avenger Commander Deck

Captain America, First Avenger is one of the standout legendary Hero cards featured in the Magic: The Gathering Marvel x Secret Lair Superdrop. This special set includes five different collections of cards, each highlighting a unique Hero. Each collection contains four reprinted cards with fresh artwork and sometimes renamed, along with a new legendary creature that can be a great centerpiece for your next Commander deck.

Captain America, First Avenger focuses mainly on Equipment. This card can transform Equipment into damage against opponents and creatures, while also offering ways to bypass equip costs. These features make Captain America a strong choice for players who want to build a Voltron-style deck, where the goal is to enhance a single commander with many Equipment cards.

    Decklist

The deck built around Captain America includes a total of 21 creatures, six sorceries, six instants, 25 artifacts, six enchantments, and 35 lands. Given its Equipment-centric strategy, many of the creatures and artifacts serve to support Equipment or are, themselves, pieces of Equipment.

    Key Cards

    Captain America, First Avenger

As the heart of the deck, Captain America, First Avenger can enter the game quickly and begin equipping Equipment right away, thanks to its ability that activates at the beginning of combat.

For just three mana, you can use your Equipment to deal damage after your attack while it was equipped. With powerful Equipment, this can lead to multiple removals as it targets up to three creatures. If your opponent is low on life, you might even close out the game by reducing their life total to zero.

    Excalibur, Sword of Eden

One of the best Equipment cards for Captain America is Excalibur, Sword of Eden. Despite its high initial casting cost, the presence of numerous historic permanents can allow you to cast it at a lower cost, or even for free. It has a reasonable equip cost and grants an impressive power boost of ten to Captain America. After it deals damage, you can unequip it, sending 12 damage to any target. This is particularly useful for eliminating threats that could disrupt your plans, and re-equipping it is straightforward afterward.

    Cloudsteel Kirin

Cloudsteel Kirin may not shine on its own as a creature, but when equipped, it offers tremendous value. Although its reconfigure cost is a bit steep, Captain America can navigate this effectively since it is classified as Equipment.

When equipped, the Kirin ensures that you cannot lose and your opponents cannot win, which gives you a tactical edge as you chip away at their life totals. Plus, it grants flying, making Captain America harder to block.

    Chandra’s Ignition

Chandra’s Ignition is exceptional for acting as a one-sided board wipe in many instances. By targeting Captain America, the card deals damage equal to its power to all opposing creatures and players. Generally, since Captain America will have substantial stats bolstered by Equipment, this ability can result in significant damage.

Chandra’s Ignition enhances the damage dealt by Captain America and can bring down life totals faster than merely attacking.

    The Reaver Cleaver

When it comes to ordinary stat boosts, The Reaver Cleaver falls short, but its ability to provide trample is notable, especially when combined with other Equipment that elevates stats. The real strength of this card lies in its capacity to generate Treasure tokens equal to the combat damage dealt by the equipped creature.

However, keep in mind that the damage must come from combat, meaning that damage dealt using Captain America’s ability will not produce any Treasure tokens. Jeskai colors often struggle with ramping up mana, so generating these tokens becomes crucial for boosting your resources, especially since other sources of ramp are limited.

    How to Play the Deck

The Captain America, First Avenger deck’s main strategy is to equip Captain America with as much Equipment as possible to amplify its stats. The Equipment can be unattached at any time to deal damage to multiple targets, ensuring you always have removal options as long as you have enough mana.

While Captain America can work around the standard one Equipment attachment limit per turn, other cards help facilitate more Equipment attachments without spending mana. For instance, Forge Anew allows for a free equip activation each turn, Sigarda’s Aid attaches Equipment automatically upon entry, and Blacksmith’s Talent at level two also enables free attachment at the start of combat.

The deck offers a wealth of search options to maintain consistency. Using cards like Steelshaper’s Gift, Fighter Class, and Open the Armory allows you to quickly gather the needed Equipment based on the game’s state.

The primary method of winning with this deck is through combat damage, particularly Commander damage, as Captain America can easily reach the 21 damage threshold needed to eliminate opponents. Even if direct Commander damage isn’t an option, high stats and powerful effects can yield substantial damage outputs to end games quickly.

The main weakness of this deck is its heavy reliance on Equipment. While you can equip on other creatures if needed, without adequate mana, you might find yourself limited in what you can do during your turn, primarily attaching Equipment to creatures without achieving significant impact.
