Bosnian Actress Merjem Šiljak Joins Akın Akınözü in Aşk ve Taht

Digital Phablet – Bosnian actress Merjem Šiljak joins Akın Akınözü in Aşk ve Taht.

Production is gaining momentum on Aşk ve Taht (Love and the Throne), one of Turkey’s most ambitious historical dramas currently in development. Produced by Mehmet Bozdağ for Bozdağ Film, the ATV series has officially entered the next phase with its initial costume script reading. The production has also introduced Bosnian actress Merjem Šiljak as the new Maryam and a leading star opposite Akın Akınözü.

The project has already garnered significant attention in Turkish entertainment circles due to its panoramic historical setting, internationally assembled cast, and a creative team behind some of Turkey’s most successful TV shows.

According to Turkish media sources, the cast recently gathered for a costume rehearsal and script reading—marking their first chance to appear together in period costumes before filming begins.

The series is led by Akın Akınözü, who plays Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat, a prominent ruler of the Anatolian Seljuk State. Opposite him is Bosnian actress Merjem Šiljak, cast as Princess Destina—initially referred to as Maryam during early development—and she joins the main cast alongside Akın Akınözü. Also starring is Simay Barlas as Melike Hatun, another pivotal character.

The story centers on Alaeddin Keykubat’s rise from captivity to the throne, depicting a critical chapter in Anatolian Seljuk history. The narrative promises a rich blend of historical accuracy and emotional storytelling, exploring themes of love, betrayal, political rivalry, palace intrigue, and harem politics—offering a fresh take on a rarely portrayed love story set within the royal court.

During the costume reading event, Akın Akınözü, Merjem Šiljak, and Simay Barlas expressed their excitement about joining the production, optimistic as they prepare for filming.

The cast also features Ayça Bingöl, Cem Bender, Halil İbrahim Ceyhan, Ferit Kaya, Ceren Benderlioğlu, Murat Serezli, Emrah Altıntoprak, İdil Yener, Özgür Emre Yıldırım, Oğulcan Arman Uslu, Ece Yüksel, Bülent Gültekin, Halil İbrahim Temizoğlu, Mücahid Temizel, Merve Polat, Selin Genç, Hakan Eke, Alican Albayrak, Ahmet Kayakesen, Göksel Kayahan, Timur Ölkebaş, Özer Arslan, Erman Saban, Ozan Ayhan, and İlayda Yıldız.

A standout element of this production has been Akınözü’s physical transformation. To accurately portray Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat, he dedicated months to preparation, growing his hair long to reflect the appearance of the 13th-century Seljuk ruler.

Turkish media also reports that Akınözü underwent extensive research on the historical figure and period’s political climate. His costume, hairstyle, and overall look were meticulously designed to embody one of Anatolia’s most renowned sultans.

Behind the scenes, the series is directed by acclaimed filmmakers Yağmur Taylan and Durul Taylan, collectively known as the Taylan Brothers, alongside Cem Toluay. The Taylan Brothers are among Turkey’s most respected directors, renowned for their critically acclaimed and commercially successful dramas.

Additional social media moments from the cast include exchanges about their enthusiasm for the upcoming series, sharing their excitement during costume fittings and script readings, and promoting the project on platforms like Instagram and Twitter.

The screenplay focuses on Alaeddin Keykubat’s journey from imprisonment to royal power, portraying a significant era in Anatolian Seljuk history. Rather than solely highlighting military triumphs or political maneuvers, the series aims to weave historical facts with an emotional narrative that delves into romance, betrayal, dynastic rivalry, palace schemes, and harem politics.

Producers emphasize that Aşk ve Taht will tell a powerful love story rarely depicted on screen, while also exploring the delicate balance between personal affections and political ambition within the royal court.

During the costume reading, lead actors shared their excitement, and the production team expressed confidence in the series’ potential. With its rich historical backdrop, extensive cast, detailed costumes, and skilled director team, Aşk ve Taht is positioned as one of ATV’s most anticipated historical dramas. Expectations continue to grow as filming approaches, aiming to blend Turkish history with epic romance and palace intrigue on a grand scale.
