    Romestead is a sizable game for an early access release, with many complex mechanics that are poorly explained. After playing for about 20 hours, I’ve learned some key things I wish I knew at the start — like where to place your base, how to keep your citizens happy, and the best strategies for building.

    Here are ten tips to help you understand Romestead better.

    Don’t Just Place Your Town Where You Spawn
    This is the most important advice I wish I had before starting my first game. I started right next to my spawn point but soon realized I was far from crucial resources like coal, water for mills, and the biomes I needed — like desert and volcano. Transporting materials from these distant spots became a hassle.
    Next time, I plan to head toward the center of the map and build my town there, ideally where three biomes meet. This saves time and effort later. Later in the game, you can unlock a trading post to move resources between towns, but that’s a late-game tech.

    Be Careful About Which Citizens You Recruit
    Building your town requires recruiting citizens, but not all are equally useful. Watch out for two bad perks:

    • Gluttonous: These citizens eat more food, which is bad early on, as managing food already is tough.
    • Disloyal: These citizens give less loyalty over time, making it harder to reach higher expertise levels necessary for crafting legendary items.
      Avoid making your blacksmith disloyal. Citizens level up individually, so if you realize this late, it can be a problem.

    You Can Respec Your Favors
    Don’t worry too much about your build early on. Experiment with different weapons and scrolls to find what works for you. I had success with a dual crossbow build. You can also unlock the Canteen of Youth, which can reset your favor points. To level up your merchant, buy goods early to start purchasing health potions, since you can’t craft those yet outside of finding them in dungeons.

    Search for Hidden Chests
    Many of the best loot—rare items and accessories—are hidden in chests scattered around the world. Often, they’re in plain sight:

    • Inside fallen logs
    • In monster spawners inside dungeons
    • Tents and bushes
      You can find chests by hitting objects that seem out of place; if there’s one, you’ll hear a magical sound indicating loot.

    Maximize Your Gear
    Playing solo can be tough, especially because you’re heavily punished if you’re not properly equipped. Keep upgrading your gear from leather to copper, then bronze, and later use endgame materials like fire scales for better armor. Legendary items, which come from mastery above level 20, are crucial for beating the game solo—especially in the volcano biome, which is very hard alone.

    Build Roads
    This was something I should’ve done earlier. Building roads might take some initial time, but it greatly speeds up resource transportation. If you have a clay deposit far away, build a road. Roads are cheap and quick to make. You can even get a Road Maker favor, which doubles the speed of construction for each tile. That’s a huge time-saver, and you can reset favors later when needed.

    Always Carry A Tent
    My favorite item in the game is the tent. Crafted at the leatherworker, it lets you set your spawn point anywhere on the map. If you’re heading into a dungeon or boss fight, place a tent outside; if you die, respawning next to the entrance saves a long trek back.

    Establish Satellite Towns With Level Two Altars
    Most of what you do in Romestead is about saving time. Unlocking the Level Two Altar and the teleportation feature is a game changer. To do this, upgrade your altar via the carpenter’s upgrade bench, offer resources to unlock fast travel, then build new towns with their own altars and carpenter shops. It takes effort but pays off by letting you quickly move around the map.

    Focus On Food Buffs
    It took me a while to understand that I was dying because I relied on basic snacks like rats. Instead, invest in better food made at your bakery. High-quality dishes often need multiple ingredients—like dates, honey, garum, and crab meat—which require farms and production buildings. Choose one food type to specialize in early on to simplify planning.

    Get Your Automation Going
    Once you unlock the Logistics Tent after defeating the Cyclops boss in the desert, managing resources becomes much easier. Link your farms, mills, and bakeries to automate resource movement. For example:

    • Farm produces wheat
    • Watermill grinds wheat into flour
    • Bakery turns flour into bread
    • Bread gets stored in your food warehouse automatically
      This setup saves time and makes resource management smoother, especially early in the game. Also, having a higher-level quarry producing coal helps keep everything running efficiently. Automation allows you to craft items like olive oil that can be sold for profit or use in other recipes.

Position beds around your farming zones to utilize crew’s natural CO2 output, streamlining farming operations. Be cautious: too much CO2 in medical bays can be deadly for patients.

    Ship layout matters more than appearance. Focus on functionality and productivity, not just aesthetics. Some systems, like solar panels, require minimal maintenance and can be placed far from active zones. Strategic placement saves time and resources; for example, locate critical systems that need little interaction in remote areas. Not all parts of the ship need equal attention—prioritize busy or essential sections to optimize your ship’s efficiency.

    Botany and Cooking

    Farming plays a central role in your survival. Crops need to be maintained to keep the crew fed and happy. It’s important to keep your farm separate from areas prone to hazards like fires, which can spread quickly and destroy crops and other facilities.     Shields Up

    Research Order

    You’re free to choose your own path in Space Haven; there’s no fixed route. However, a good strategy is to prioritize research on oxygen and water systems first. Once those basics are stable, focus on generators, power storage, botany, and storage, then move on to weapons and defenses. Starting with foundational systems ensures your colony remains stable as you expand and take on more complex challenges. Balancing research tracks based on immediate needs and future plans is essential for long-term success.

Although it shares similarities with the first game, Subnautica 2 takes place on a completely new planet, featuring new marine life, obstacles, and survival tactics.

    Whether your goal is just to stay alive or to turn this toxic world into a luxury resort, there are a few essential tips to help you get started. With proper planning and a bit of luck, you might even avoid constant near-death experiences.

    ### Prioritize Expanding Your Lung Capacity

    When you first get the chance to explore underwater, you’ll notice that your time submerged is very limited. To fix this, building Air Tanks should be your top priority. There are two types: the Standard Air Tank and the High Capacity Air Tank.

    Start with the Standard Air Tank, which is necessary to craft the High Capacity version. You begin the game knowing how to make it, but to unlock the High Capacity tank, you’ll need to scan fragments found at nearby wreck sites using your scanner. These fragments are scattered around wreckage, so explore these areas thoroughly.

    Most materials for crafting these tanks are easy to gather. Keep in mind that to make the High Capacity tank, you’ll first need a Processor at your base to convert materials into Ingot. Once both tanks are crafted, you’ll have much more air, allowing for richer exploration and resource collection from depths previously out of reach.

    ### Bring Portable Storage Back to Base

    Your storage options are very limited at the start. The lifepod only contains a small wall locker, but you can eventually build a base with larger storage units. Until then, portable storage containers are vital.

    These small, handheld containers are likely to be found at wreck sites. Always bring them back to your base when discovered. Since they must be held with both hands, it’s best to finish other tasks at a wreck before hauling these containers to your lifepod.

    You can also drop excess materials on the ground in your lifepod or base if storage is full. While usable in a pinch, it’s more efficient to keep them stored and managed to free up inventory space, helping you build a reserve of resources early on.

    ### Default to Your Scanner While Exploring

    As your toolset grows, you’ll fill your toolbar, but the scanner should remain your primary device. It’s one of the first tools you’ll get and allows you to scan marine life, minerals, and other objects to create data entries.

    These entries are crucial because they let you craft the corresponding items for your base later. Always scan everything you come across. Some items require multiple scans to unlock their recipes, while others only need one. Even after recipes are unlocked, scanning duplicates grants you free Titanium, which is always useful.

    ### Get Your Own Base Going ASAP

    While the lifepod is handy, it’s best to establish your own base as soon as you unlock the Habitat Builder. Building rooms and basic facilities mainly requires Titanium, which is plentiful, so setting up a base within a few hours is feasible.

    Your base enables access to more storage, vehicles, and advanced equipment that can make exploration easier. Keep in mind that powering your base might be difficult early on, so prioritize installing solar panels and later seeking out Bioreactor fragments when your base is sizable enough.

    ### Use Your Compass and Scanner Station

    Unlike the original game, Subnautica 2 doesn’t require you to craft a compass to navigate. The game provides a built-in compass that appears at the top of your screen, showing your depth and direction.

    Use it to track your position relative to known locations. When you find unique materials like Silver deposits, check your depth and direction. The compass is your main way of remembering where wreck sites and resources are situated.

    Later, you’ll unlock a Scanner Station, which can be built at your base and provides waypoints for materials and wreck locations. However, it’s still wise to memorize directions using your compass to differentiate between sites you’ve visited and those you need to revisit.

    ### Stock Up on Food and Water

    Monitoring your hunger and hydration is crucial. Your two main concerns besides oxygen are calories (food) and water. These can be replenished from Water Slugs, which glow at night for easy gathering, and fish around your lifepod.

    It’s wise to keep a stock of food and water at your base and carry at least one of each while exploring. You can eat raw fish in emergencies, but cooked or processed versions restore more health and stamina, so plan to cook your catch whenever possible.

    ### Keep An Eye Out For Oxygen Tunics and Air Pockets

    Expanding your oxygen capacity is essential. Look for Oxygen Tunics, which are glowing plants on the ocean floor that release continuous air bubbles, allowing you to stay underwater longer by swimming directly into these bubbles.

    In caves, many will have air pockets on the ceiling—great spots to replenish oxygen during exploration. These pockets save you the trouble of surfacing repeatedly.

    ### Never Leave Without An Air Bladder

    Craft an Air Bladder early; it’s a compact container of air that can replenish oxygen or propel you upward. It needs to be equipped or placed in your toolbar to automatically refill when you reach an oxygen source.

    An Air Bladder is a vital emergency item—it can save your life by pulling you to the surface faster than swimming. Always carry at least one, and use it strategically to extend your deep dives and wreck exploration.

    ### Keep Spare Batteries Handy

    Almost every tool in your inventory runs on batteries. While they last fairly long, they can die unexpectedly far from a Fabricator.

    Carry at least one spare battery—two if most tools are unlocked—to ensure you won’t get stranded power-deprived. Swapping batteries is straightforward and can be a lifesaver during long expeditions.

    ### Pin Recipes for Convenience

    When using the Fabricator, you can pin recipes to the top right of your screen. This simplifies crafting by providing quick access to the needed components.

    Pin multiple related recipes—like the main one and sub-recipes—so you can keep track of what’s missing while gathering resources. This small habit saves a lot of time and keeps your crafting organized during hectic exploration trips.

Focusing on attributes like Stamina and Strength tends to be simpler initially than magic-based paths.

    Go to Work

    Working at various jobs not only provides you with gold for upgrades but also supplies ingredients for cooking. Depending on how often you work and where, you’ll unlock higher work levels, gaining access to new materials that can boost your stats. Make sure to allocate time for work at least a few times, as it’s a quick way to increase your stats outside of classes. Money earned from working can be used to buy better gear, making it a worthwhile activity.

    Clear Your Stress Before Activities

    To perform your best during lessons and activities, it’s important to reduce your stress first. Sneaking out at night doesn’t help much with stress recovery, so be sure to eat snacks or meals you’ve cooked, which can recover stamina and lower stress levels. Proper stress management will improve your performance in both lessons and quests afterward.

    Participate in Optional Battles

    Once unlocked, optional battles should not be skipped. They cost six stamina but provide valuable rewards, such as medals for gold resale, materials like meat for cooking, and experience for your party members. These battles also help you prepare for nighttime fights and prevent falling behind in combat skills.

    Focus on Two Party Members for Battles

    Preparing for the big fight during the Crimson Moon requires leveling up two key characters. By consistently choosing these characters for battle, they will reach higher levels and unlock new abilities, making them more effective during tough encounters. Recommended partners include Chocolat for healing, paired with Crois or Noah for dark magic. For a magic-focused team, pairing Chocolat with Hasis works well, and for light magic healing, adjust your partner choices accordingly.

    The game is designed to be replayed multiple times. Your first run should focus on following your chosen path and completing your specific goals. Many endings and achievements require multiple plays to unlock. Carry over some progress—like points or upgrades—from your first run to the next to help you succeed and access new content.

    If you’ve played MMORPGs before, especially World of Warcraft, you’ll have an advantage. However, Farever has some unique aspects you should be aware of. Making wise choices early on can save you hours of retracing your steps or starting over entirely.

    Don’t Be Afraid To Try All Four Classes

    Choosing your class is one of the most important decisions in Farever. Right now, there are only four options: Warrior, Rogue, Priest, and Mage. Many classes feel similar to their WoW counterparts, but if you’re new to fantasy MMORPGs, it’s a good idea to test each one to see which fits your style. Weapons are specific to each class, so not every weapon can be used by all classes.

If you’re a level 2 warrior wandering into a level 10 zone, it’s wiser to find another route. Many enemies attack on sight, making reckless fighting risky. Running with a group makes tougher enemies more manageable, but solo players should be cautious.

    It’s Dangerous To Go Alone, But You Can

    Deciding whether to play solo or team up with friends depends on your preference. Solo players need to be mindful of their limits, but it’s still possible to enjoy the full game by planning well. Work on building a self-sustaining character and tackle dungeons suitable for your level.

    There are no matchmaking tools for dungeons or other activities, but the Farever Discord community can help you find groups. You can also use the in-game chat to ask for help with specific tasks or dungeon runs.

    Make Obelisks Your Priority in Every New Area

    As soon as you enter a new region, look for Obelisks—the large rock structures often found in town centers. Once interacted with, they reveal the map of the surrounding area, much like Elden Ring’s map fragments.

    Hitting these Obelisks is quick, and they’re usually easy to spot. Unlocking the map helps you track quests, see what you’ve explored, and quickly travel between regions. It’s best to do this early, unless you enjoy making things harder for yourself.

    Try Out Different Weapons to See How They Change Your Class

    While your initial class choice is crucial, weapon selection impacts how you play. Early on, your options are limited, but as you progress, try out different weapons. Remember, only specific classes can wield certain weapons.

    Most classes start with basic weapons—like Rogues with rusty knives—but as you unlock more, test them to see how their unique Weapon Skills suit your style. Many weapons have skills tied specifically to certain classes, so experimenting can help you find the best fit.

    Don’t Run From Experience

    Even if you’re not eager to grind for experience points, it’s smart to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. If you pass through an area with optional tasks or enemies you haven’t added to your Codex, spend a few moments completing those activities.

    Rushing past areas just to get to the next checkpoint will make tough fights later more difficult. Collecting experience and rewards along the way can strengthen you against future challenges. Use the achievement menu to find exploration quests or enemy tasks that offer additional rewards.

    Grab Your Free Mount, Companion, and Glider

    Farever plans to introduce microtransactions later on, but for now, they haven’t been implemented. As a thank you to Early Access players, the developers have left some free gifts in the shop.

    Fortunately, the game isn’t overly difficult. Once you get the hang of how to play, you’ll be defeating groups of enemies quickly. To help beginners get started, here are some useful tips.

    ### Complete as Many Objectives as You Can

    During a run, different objectives will appear on your screen. They’re all optional because the main goal is to survive until you face the final boss. Since pursuing objectives can put you in danger, you might think about skipping some. However, it’s best not to avoid any, unless it’s absolutely necessary.

    Completing objectives rewards you with upgrades called augmentations. Some of these are extremely helpful, especially the legendary ones, which can significantly change how you play. Don’t miss out on these rewards.

    ### Focus on Upgrading Individual Skills

    When you level up, you’re given a choice of three upgrades. These options include improvements like skill boosts, with some upgrades enhancing all your skills and others focusing on just one.

    It’s tempting to pick upgrades that boost every skill, but it’s better to concentrate on upgrading individual abilities. Each time you upgrade a specific skill, it levels up. Increased levels allow you to add infusions, which give your skills elemental damage like fire, acid, lightning, or ice—making your attacks much more powerful than general improvements.

    ### Target Creatures Holding Purple Balls

    Sometimes, during a run, you’ll see enemies holding large purple or blue balls. These balls contain experience points (XP) the enemies have collected from the battlefield. These XP should be yours, so the enemy is essentially stealing your experience.

    Killing such enemies causes them to drop all the XP they carry, which can help you level up faster. If you see an enemy with a small ball, it’s best to wait until it builds into a bigger ball before attacking. This way, you can collect a lot more XP at once.

    ### Carefully Choose Your Respawn Spot

    When you die, you can pick where to reappear by moving a large circle to your chosen location. It’s best to move as far away from enemies as possible. Also, note that you don’t just respawn normally—the game deals damage around your spawn point, which can kill nearby enemies as you come back.

    A smart strategy is to position yourself on top of a group of weaker enemies so you can eliminate them immediately. This doesn’t work on boss-level foes, but if there are some regular enemies nearby, landing on top of them can clear the area and give you a better start.

    ### Use the Refund Feature to Unlock Better Enchantments

    In the main menu, go to the enchantment tab to unlock passive boosts that make your runs easier, such as increasing your health or armor. At first, only the first column of enchantments is available. To unlock others, spend enough gold on an enchantment to master it. You can then unlock subsequent columns by following the same process.

    Once a column is unlocked, it remains so, even if you hit the “Refund” button to get your gold back. This means it’s worth investing in lower-tier enchantments early on to unlock stronger ones later, with the option to reset your investments if needed.

    ### Use Their Own Attacks Against Them

    Most enemies attack individual players, but some have area-of-effect (AOE) attacks, like those that explode. These attacks don’t just damage you—they can also harm their fellow monsters.

    A clever tactic is to lure their allies into the explosion area when possible. Doing this repeatedly can do a lot of damage to groups of enemies and is especially helpful against tougher foes.

    ### Guide Enemies Away from Objectives
