How Creative Therapy Can Rewire the ADHD Brain

Many individuals associate ADHD with feelings of frustration. It can be difficult to concentrate, follow directions, or maintain focus on tasks. Parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals often worry about how these challenges impact learning and everyday life.

However, a recent study reveals that ADHD might also have a surprising upside: enhanced creativity.

Led by Dr. Radwa Khalil, a neuroscientist at Constructor University, this research, published in the journal iScience, investigates how the brain manages attention and how this process might also facilitate creative thinking.

ADHD is a common condition affecting millions worldwide. It’s typically characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, impulsiveness, and restlessness. These traits can make routine activities more demanding.

Interestingly, the study suggests that those same traits could also promote innovative and creative thinking. The core idea is that attention and creativity are interconnected in the brain.

Creativity often involves making unexpected connections between ideas, which requires the brain to switch flexibly between different thoughts. Individuals with ADHD may naturally do this because their attention span is more dispersed, leading to a tendency toward “mind-wandering.” While this can complicate certain tasks, it may also foster more open, versatile thinking.

Dr. Khalil describes this concept like a wide spotlight. For most people, attention is focused tightly on one thing. For those with ADHD, the spotlight is broader, allowing more details and information from the environment to be noticed. Although this heightened awareness can sometimes feel overwhelming, it also opens the door to discovering new ideas and patterns.

This perspective helps explain why many creative professionals—artists, musicians, innovators—often exhibit traits associated with ADHD. Their ability to think differently and explore diverse ideas can be an advantage.

The study also explores practical applications, emphasizing the potential of creative pursuits as therapeutic tools. Engaging in music, painting, dance, or writing can encourage self-expression and align with the natural thought processes of people with ADHD.

These activities do more than serve as hobbies; they can actively enhance brain function. When someone becomes deeply immersed in a creative task, they often experience heightened focus and absorption. This engagement might help strengthen attention and alleviate some of the difficulties linked to ADHD.

The researchers suggest that such creative interventions could serve as alternative or complementary treatments to medication, offering new ways to support those with ADHD.

Nonetheless, they caution that further research is necessary. The relationship between ADHD and creativity is complex, and not every person with ADHD is highly creative, nor does every creative individual have ADHD.

The study highlights the importance of continued, multidisciplinary research and emphasizes the need for collaboration between scientists and healthcare providers. By working together, experts can develop more effective strategies to nurture strengths and address challenges faced by people with ADHD.

Ultimately, this research shifts the narrative around ADHD, framing it not only as a set of difficulties but also as a potential source of unique talents—particularly in creative thinking. Recognizing and fostering these strengths can help individuals with ADHD realize their full potential.

Rather than insisting everyone think in the same way, society might benefit from embracing different ways of thinking. With proper support, those with ADHD can transform their challenges into opportunities for innovation and achievement.

For those interested in related topics, exploring recent research on autism’s causes and how activities like spending time with cats can reduce anxiety in children with autism offers additional insights. Further studies into vitamin D and its links to autism, as well as the significance of unusual eating habits, continue to expand our understanding of neurodevelopmental conditions.

  • Four Reasons To Care About Amazon’s Alexa+

Four Reasons To Care About Amazon’s Alexa+

We are entering a new age of virtual assistants. Over just two days, two of the industry giants—Google and Amazon—have transitioned their smart home devices to next-generation AI-powered assistants that do much more than traditional chatbots. Amazon’s ecosystem now runs on Alexa+ moving forward, while Google Assistant is paving the way with Gemini.

Amazon holds a significant edge here, with hundreds of millions of devices ready for the Alexa+ upgrade—either directly or indirectly. As previously noted, the real highlight isn’t the hardware itself but the convenience it provides, mostly driven by the Alexa+ assistant.

Below are four key features of Alexa+ that I find most impressive—and I recommend you pay attention to them as well.

It doesn’t feel like talking to a robot

Let’s start with the basics. Alexa+ is much more conversational and doesn’t require you to say the wake word (“Hey Alexa” or “Hey Echo”) every time. Once activated, the assistant stays engaged, making interactions feel more natural and reducing the sense that you’re speaking to a programmed machine.

Built on the same foundation as other large language models like Google Gemini or ChatGPT, Alexa+ can participate in fluid conversations and improve over time by learning your preferences, routines, and daily habits.

But sometimes, you need the assistant to get things done rather than chat. That’s where its conversational skills shine. Instead of navigating through routines or giving repetitive commands, you can just ask Alexa+ to handle the task, and it will follow through.

For instance, you can say, “Turn on the garage lights when I arrive and lower the thermostat,” and it will do just that—no need for complex rules or automation shortcuts. If the command isn’t clear enough, Alexa+ will ask for clarification rather than balking with an error message.

It’s smarter in the true sense

Alexa+ isn’t just an assistant; it’s a comprehensive knowledge hub. Trained with a vast array of data spanning math, history, and more, it can respond to questions on virtually any topic with a natural conversational tone. Whether you want an in-depth explanation like a college professor or a simple summary suitable for a fifth-grader, it adapts to your needs.

This quick shift from casual chat to detailed explanation is especially helpful in households with members of various ages and interests. Additionally, it now has real-time awareness of current events and provides accurate, up-to-date information, avoiding the common problem of “hallucinations” in AI chatbots.

Thanks to partnerships with reputable sources—such as Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post, TIME, Forbes, Business Insider, Politico, USA Today, Conde Nast, Hearst, Vox, and more—Alexa+ offers reliable news updates and personalized briefings. “With Alexa+ Daily Briefings, you can get a rundown of trending news tailored to your interests—from sports updates to pop culture headlines,” Amazon explains.

    It’s everywhere

One of the most underrated benefits of Alexa+ is its ubiquity. Whether on a smart display, speaker, TV, smartphone, or through a web browser on your laptop, it’s accessible across devices. It even integrates with work-related services like email and calendars, learning from your interactions to help whenever you need it.

The continuity of memory and context across devices is a major upgrade. For example, you can start a conversation with Alexa+ on your Echo device, continue it on your phone or in your car, and pick it up on your computer—all seamlessly. It’s designed to be available wherever you are.

This interconnectedness means Alexa+ can remember your preferences, information about others, documents, meeting details, and more, all for future reference. You can get quick updates on your schedule, check the status of an email chain, turn routine tasks into engaging learning sessions for kids, and much more—regardless of which device you’re using.

It can even skip to specific scenes in Prime Video, monitor smart home cameras, track music releases, and handle interactions without dependence on a single device.

    It’s agentic beyond hype

The most futuristic application of Alexa+ involves executing multi-step tasks on your behalf with full awareness of your preferences. It can learn your dietary habits, recognize items in your pantry through cameras, and reorder supplies automatically. But that’s just scratching the surface.

It can browse the internet, perform actions across various services—like reserving a table on OpenTable, booking event tickets with TicketMaster, or scheduling a spa appointment on Vagaro—entirely autonomously. Thanks to Amazon’s extensive partnerships, the range of services accessible via voice commands will only expand.

Moreover, Alexa+ can manage smart home routines by understanding and performing complex commands based on your descriptions. However, access to these advanced features generally requires a Prime membership or a subscription fee, such as $20 per month, to unlock the full potential of this next-generation AI assistant.

  • Galaxy Phone Feature Gets Much-Needed Attention

Galaxy Phone Feature Gets Much-Needed Attention

Samsung is collaborating with external app developers to enhance its Now Bar feature, which is located at the bottom of the lock screens on select Galaxy smartphones. This feature aims to provide real-time information, rivaling Apple’s Dynamic Island and the Live Activities capability found on iPhones. Presently, the Now Bar primarily displays data from a handful of Samsung applications and a few music apps, resulting in limited functionality. Samsung appears to be using South Korea as a testing ground to expand this support, optimizing several local apps for better integration with the Now Bar.

One of the standout applications involved in this effort is Kakao T, which serves as South Korea’s leading ride-hailing app. It’s expected that the Now Bar will be able to inform users of their driver’s arrival time, the estimated duration until they reach their destination, and the time spent using a rental vehicle or bike—all without needing to unlock the device. The global equivalent of this feature can be seen in Uber, which utilizes Apple’s Dynamic Island to display ride details.

In addition, Samsung is set to partner with Naver, South Korea’s main search engine and a competitor to Google, to introduce its Naver Sports feed to the Now Bar. By connecting preferred sports teams to a Naver account, users will gain access to real-time scores and updates. This feature is anticipated to cover various sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. By adapting these applications for the Now Bar, Samsung is progressing toward broader app support that will appeal to users beyond South Korea.

Reports suggest that Samsung is working on adapting 11 new local apps for this feature, though their names have not yet been disclosed. Furthermore, the company is looking to include its “Cross App Action” functionality, also known as Seamless Actions, allowing its virtual assistant—either Bixby or Google Gemini—to perform multiple tasks across several apps through a single voice command.

Samsung has been observed testing applications like Google Maps for use with the Now Bar. There are also possible plans to utilize the Good Lock app to customize the appearance of the Now Bar and even integrate unsupported apps into the feature. The Now Bar is part of Samsung’s One UI 7 software and the Galaxy AI suite. It is available on devices such as the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Galaxy A56, in addition to some older Galaxy models receiving the One UI 7 update.

CES 2025: GlanceTV – A New Era for Android Users

Updated less than 45 minutes ago

For millions of Android users in Asia, checking their phones reveals more than just the time against a backdrop of cherished moments or pets. Instead, it showcases a blend of news updates, weather forecasts, and sports scores, all interspersed with advertisements.

This unique experience, known as Glance, made its debut on U.S. Android devices in 2024, receiving a rather tepid response from users and reviewers alike.

“It doesn’t provide any substantial value, and it simply doesn’t look appealing,” commented our Motorola Moto G reviewer after using Glance.

The creator of Glance, a company of the same name backed by Google, either disregarded our feedback or simply didn’t let it affect their plans. During CES 2025, Piyush Shah, the company’s president and COO, invited me to preview their innovative idea: Glance is making its way to televisions.

    GlanceTV.
An AI-generated image featuring GlanceTV. Glance

During my hour-long briefing, Shah and his team elaborated on their vision for the future of television, which closely resembles the Glance interface users see on their phone’s lock screens.

The official description of GlanceTV reads, “It’s a new experience that transforms idle, ambient TV screens into dynamic, AI-powered smart surfaces,” designed to display live, personalized content when the TV isn’t being actively used. This means when your television enters screensaver mode, it could instead showcase a carousel of updates that includes news headlines and sports scores, along with a clock.

Shah emphasized that Glance had formed partnerships with numerous content providers to generate the displays viewers will see. Although there are no plans to pull content from the web, he mentioned that sometimes generative AI would be employed to create images when a provider hasn’t supplied one.

While the demonstration did not feature any advertisements, it did include an interesting, albeit slightly eerie, application of generative AI technology.

An AI-generated image of Simon Cohen on a GlanceTV screen.
Those aren’t my glasses and I’m pretty sure my physique isn’t that pronounced, but otherwise, the AI got it right.

With my consent, Shah uploaded a photo of my face into the GlanceTV system. A cloud-based AI model then inserted my likeness into various Instagram-like settings in casual clothing. The accuracy was remarkable—though my AI counterpart seemed to master the art of posing far too effortlessly.

The key aspect is that each image serves as a shoppable outfit, available through a click on your remote. Despite my aversion to shopping—mostly due to crowds and sales complaints—seeing an idealized version of myself in stylish clothes might just prompt a purchase.

An AI-generated image of Simon Cohen on a GlanceTV screen.

I found myself captivated by GlanceTV’s flowing content, reminiscent of the screens you often encounter in elevators or waiting rooms. You can’t help but watch simply because it’s there.

This leads to the most significant contrast between the mobile and TV experiences of Glance. Our smartphones serve as tools—versatile devices that orchestrate much of our lives. For many, lock screen notifications offer a glimpse into vital apps. When our phones aren’t in use, they are either actively engaged or tucked away.

In contrast, TVs typically cater to passive viewing. Unless you’re gaming, screens primarily showcase content. When a show wraps up or you’re distracted by smaller screens while searching for something new, we’re indifferent when TVs switch to a screensaver.

Shah envisions that GlanceTV’s blend of tailored content will be so appealing—so engaging—you might just opt to keep your TV on consistently.

The integration of GlanceTV into your television setup—be it through a smart TV, set-top box, or other connected devices—will depend on the manufacturer’s choices. Like the mobile version, GlanceTV cannot simply be downloaded; it must be built into the operating system. Existing devices may receive updates, but new model releases will likely be the primary method for GlanceTV to reach homes.

It seems unlikely that Glance would strike a deal with Apple, as the company tends to guard its user experiences tightly. However, many manufacturers possess the financial strength and the necessary desire to transform idle screen time into monetizable content. The success of GlanceTV integration is likely with brands known for streaming devices.

Recently, just before CES, Glance announced its first integration with India’s Airtel. This setup is automatically enabled for over one million Airtel Xstream set-top box devices, with plans to expand to four million by mid-2025.

If you’re uneasy about the GlanceTV concept, rest assured you can disable it, just as you can with the mobile version. Nevertheless, I suspect that the engagement of this idle-time content display will outshine its mobile counterpart.
