AT&T Welcomes New Year With Price Hike For Some Customers

Happy New Year! AT&T is kicking off 2025 with a rate hike affecting some of its customers.

As reported by Android Authority, subscribers to AT&T FirstNet will notice an increase of $3 per line in their monthly bills. This adjustment has been officially confirmed on AT&T’s website.

AT&T FirstNet is a specialized wireless broadband network tailored for first responders and public safety personnel across the United States, developed in collaboration with the federal government.

The telecom giant claims that this price adjustment is necessary to “continue delivering the excellent wireless service you expect.”

Customers who activated their service after April 15 will not feel the impact of this price rise until they’ve completed nine months with the service. During this time, they will receive a monthly credit of $3 to help offset the future increase.

Historically, AT&T FirstNet subscribers have enjoyed some of the lowest rates in the industry. However, with this recent change, their monthly charges will go up from $45 to $48, representing an approximate 7% increase.

This is likely not the only price increase that AT&T, the second-largest wireless carrier in the U.S., will implement in the coming year. Over the course of 2024, at least three price hikes were noted, including a $10 per line increase for customers on select older unlimited plans, which was announced in June.

Verizon, the leading carrier in the nation, and T-Mobile, the third-largest, also implemented price increases last year.

FirstNet service is available to numerous public safety agencies and personnel, such as law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services (EMS), and healthcare professionals, among others.

Verizon And AT&T Confirm Cyberattacks, Networks Are Secure

Following recent cyberattacks from intrusion groups, AT&T and Verizon have announced that their systems have successfully recovered and are now functioning securely. In separate statements provided to Reuters and Bloomberg, both telecom giants indicated they cooperated with law enforcement to minimize the impact of these state-sponsored threats linked to espionage efforts.

According to federal authorities, at least nine telecom companies have been victimized by attacks from Salt Typhoon, a cyberespionage entity associated with China. While the complete scope of the assault on AT&T and Verizon has not yet been disclosed, it appears the attack was specifically aimed at sensitive information.

The FBI and CISA confirmed the intrusion attempts against U.S. telecommunications infrastructure in October. Reports indicated that Verizon was specifically targeted, with individuals like Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance possibly being on the hackers’ radar, according to BBC.

Earlier in September, The Wall Street Journal reported incursions into broadband networks by state-affiliated actors, who aimed to gain covert access to the infrastructure and sensitive data. Soon after, the publication revealed that investigations had been initiated into the attacks affecting not only Verizon and AT&T but also Lumen, linked to the Salt Typhoon group.

According to a recent statement, “The hackers may have potentially compromised U.S. government surveillance of Chinese threats, including the FBI’s investigations,” revealing the extent of the national security concern. In a separate statement to Bloomberg, AT&T acknowledged that the threat actors sought crucial foreign intelligence.

This month, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a comprehensive set of mobile communication safety guidelines aimed at senior government officials and other high-profile individuals, in response to these cyber espionage activities.

Verizon also informed Bloomberg that a small number of high-profile figures in government and politics were specifically targeted during these attacks. As of now, both carriers assure that their systems are free from state-sponsored threat activities.

Microsoft, collaborating with officials on the recent attacks, has reported that the Salt Typhoon threat is traced back to China and is also referred to as GhostEmperor and FamousSparrow. The tech giant has previously contended with a similar operation, Silk Typhoon, which targeted sectors like healthcare, law firms, educational institutions, defense contractors, think tanks, and NGOs in the U.S. and abroad.

It’s worth noting that AT&T’s challenges are not new for 2024. Earlier this year, the company confirmed a significant data leak affecting over 7 million active accounts and more than 65 million former subscribers. Not long after, they reported that customer data, including messages and call logs, was also compromised through a third-party cloud service.

Tom Holland Joins Christopher Nolan’s Upcoming Film

Christopher Nolan, known for his work with Batman, is now shifting his focus to Spider-Man. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Holland will star in Nolan’s upcoming film, sharing the screen with Matt Damon.

As is typical with Nolan’s films, details about this project are being kept under wraps. However, the report from THR suggests the setting may take place either in the past or the future, rather than the present. Filming is expected to commence in early 2025, with Universal set to distribute the movie in IMAX on July 17, 2026. This release date has become synonymous with Nolan’s productions, following the pattern established by films like Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, Inception, and The Dark Knight. Nolan will be producing the film alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, under their production banner, Syncopy.

What’s the theme of Nolan’s next project? A report from Variety has indicated what the film will not be about; Nolan won’t be directing a rumored adaptation of The Prisoner, a remake of the iconic British sci-fi series from the late 1960s.

Interestingly, rumors on Reddit imply that Nolan’s next film may draw inspiration from Blue Thunder, a 1983 action-thriller that follows a police officer (played by Roy Scheider) who uncovers a plan by the government to use a high-tech helicopter for crowd control and surveillance.

  • Volkswagen Aims for 8 New Affordable EVs by 2027

Volkswagen Aims for 8 New Affordable EVs by 2027

In the early 1970s, as skyrocketing oil prices dampened consumer appetite for gas-fueled cars, Volkswagen decided to invest in a groundbreaking battery system for its first electric concept vehicle known as the Elektro Bus.

Now, facing a significant decline in sales in both Europe and China, the German automotive manufacturer is setting its sights back on affordable electric vehicles as a potential savior.

According to Volkswagen brand chief Thomas Schaefer, as reported by German media, the company aims to introduce eight new budget-friendly electric models by the year 2027.

“We must make our vehicles financially viable while ensuring they’re priced affordably for consumers,” he noted.

One of the anticipated models is the ID.2all hatchback, which is now being developed on an accelerated timeline of 36 months, down from the previous period of 50 months. Just last year, VW unveiled the ID.2all concept and aims to sell it for under 25,000 euros (approximately $27,000) with a release expected in 2025.

Additionally, VW CEO Larry Blume has suggested that a model priced below $22,000 could debut post-2025.

Details regarding which models will be available in the United States remain uncertain. Last year, VW of America indicated plans to roll out an electric vehicle priced under $35,000 by 2027.

The cost of batteries continues to be one of the primary challenges in reducing production expenses for EVs and consequently lowering retail costs. VW is working on a unified battery cell to be manufactured across several plants in Europe, as well as in Ontario, Canada.

To qualify for the Inflation Reduction Act’s $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases, both the vehicle and its components—including batteries—must be partially produced domestically (at least in part).

Volkswagen already operates a facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has plans for a new plant in South Carolina. However, it remains unclear whether the new unified battery cells will be produced or assembled at these locations.

  • Next Battlefield Takes Inspiration From Series Best Games

Next Battlefield Takes Inspiration From Series Best Games

The gaming community received an exciting glimpse of the forthcoming Battlefield installment on Monday, along with some intriguing details about what players can anticipate.

In a conversation with IGN, Vince Zampella, the head of Respawn Entertainment and a key figure in the series, disclosed that the upcoming Battlefield title draws significant inspiration from Battlefield 3 and 4, particularly regarding its backdrop. Zampella emphasized that the game will take place in modern times, diverging from the futuristic setting seen in Battlefield 2042.

“If you reflect on the height of Battlefield’s success, it lies within the Battlefield 3 and 4 era, characterized by its modernity. Our goal is to steer the franchise back to its roots and perfect that experience, then explore new directions from there. For many, including players and the development team, these were the glory days of Battlefield, though 1942 also holds that distinction.”

While only a limited view was provided through concept art shared with IGN, it depicts scenes filled with smoke and flames against a backdrop reminiscent of a European city. The art hints at potential aerial and naval combat, showcasing helicopters and ships in the distance.

This next chapter in the Battlefield series represents a considerable effort by EA, who has established a dedicated team within Motive Studio (known for the Dead Space remake) to focus solely on this title. Additionally, studios such as DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect (under Zampella’s supervision) are also contributing to the development. Zampella has yet to detail the specific elements that necessitate such extensive resources but emphasized that this installment will broaden the definition of what Battlefield can be.

In response to the backlash surrounding Battlefield 2042, which was criticized for a myriad of technical issues upon its launch in 2021, EA is keen to realign the franchise’s direction. The previous title featured sprawling maps and a specialist system that many felt turned the gameplay too closely into a hero shooter experience. Despite these challenges, the game found some footing and maintained a loyal player base through a series of updates, although it took over six months for the first significant patch to arrive.

For the upcoming game, the team seems committed to a more classic approach, reverting from the previous 128-player maps back to a 64-player format based on player feedback. This change aims to create more intimate and engaging rounds, reducing the feeling of aimlessly searching for opponents.

“Did increasing the player count to 128 enhance the fun? No—just boosting numbers isn’t a meaningful metric,” said Zampella. “What matters is creating smaller, well-crafted play spaces. Some of the previous maps have been excellent, and I can’t wait for players to experience what’s coming.”

As a member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which oversees the Matter initiative, Ikea’s move to support this standard is a welcome development. This effectively provides users with a straightforward way to connect their devices within their homes. Users can manage their connected devices through the Ikea mobile app, remote controls, programmable buttons, or even voice and motion commands.

The Matter standard is steadily expanding its presence in the smart home ecosystem, attracting more manufacturers each year. As Ikea rolls out support for Matter, the platform itself continues to evolve, adding capabilities for new device types and making it simpler for households to implement Matter into their environments. As more innovative products are unveiled at IFA 2024, it’s clear that this technology will keep advancing.
