Deciding whether to accept or decline Melina’s offer in Elden Ring is one of the first major decisions you’ll face. It’s often framed as an important choice, but in reality, accepting her deal is necessary if you want to advance. To level up your character, get your horse, and progress through the game, you need to go along with her offer. However, it’s understandable to be cautious — FromSoftware games tend to keep things mysterious, and Melina’s deal isn’t fully clear at first. She simply asks you to lead her to the foot of the Erdtree, which can seem vague.
Here’s the scoop: accepting her deal unlocks the ability to use Runes for leveling and grants you the Spectral Steed Whistle, which calls Torrent, the horse. Without saying yes, you won’t be able to improve your character’s stats with Runes, and you’ll have to walk everywhere. This makes the game more challenging because you’ll struggle to reach certain locations or bypass obstacles without Torrent. So, honestly, saying yes is the best choice.
If you can’t find Melina or are hesitant to accept her deal, try resting at the Gatefront Site of Grace near the Gatefront Ruins or activate other Sites of Grace nearby in Limgrave. Eventually, she will appear to you and offer her help as your finger maiden of the Two Fingers. She will guide you towards the Elden Ring, as long as you lead her to the Erdtree — which just means playing the game normally from there. After defeating the first major boss, you’ll face another choice at Stormhill.
On the flip side, refusing her deal means you won’t gain leveling abilities or get Torrent initially. But the good news is that you can speak with her any time by resting at a Site of Grace to change your mind later. Refusing her won’t cause lasting penalties, but you’ll miss crucial mechanics that could make the game a lot harder.
So, in short: accept Melina’s offer to make your journey smoother and less frustrating. If you turn her down, you can still decide later, but keep in mind you’re losing a key part of the game’s progression until you change your mind.
