OpenAI’s newest powerhouse, GPT-5.5, continues to dominate benchmarks, captivating users with its advanced coding and reasoning skills, along with its vast reservoir of knowledge.
While ChatGPT’s latest iteration no longer needs excessive guidance like earlier versions, it has become more particular about lengthy, intricate prompts that previously yielded good results.
If GPT-5.5 seems to underperform compared to earlier models, your prompts might be the culprit.
OpenAI has introduced a specific prompting guide for GPT-5.5, clearly outlining what strategies improve output and which ones hinder it. Here are some valuable insights and key takeaways.
Keep prompts concise
The primary advice from the GPT-5.5 prompt guide emphasizes brevity: “Shorter, goal-focused prompts generally outperform process-heavy ones.”
This means that the most effective prompts specify precisely what you want, rather than detailing every step of how to achieve it. Overly detailed instructions—like elaborate sequences—may actually impair performance, adding noise and restricting the model’s creative problem-solving capabilities, as warned by OpenAI.
Therefore, if you’re using older-style prompts such as “first do this, then do that,” you’re possibly limiting GPT-5.5’s strengths—its innovative approach to tackling problems. Instead, focus your prompts on the desired outcome, allowing GPT-5.5 to determine the best methods to reach it.
OpenAI offers an example of an efficient, outcome-oriented prompt for GPT-5.5:
Resolve the customer’s issue from start to finish.
Success criteria include:
- Making the eligibility decision based on available policy and account data
- Completing any permitted actions before responding
- Providing a final reply that includes completed actions, the customer message, and any obstacles
- Requesting the smallest missing piece of evidence if any are absent
Be cautious of overly fabricated content
GPT-5.5’s knack for creative problem-solving can sometimes lead it astray, confidently making errors. This highlights the importance of clear boundaries for what it can and cannot invent.
OpenAI’s guide recommends specifying when the model should rely solely on factual data versus generating creative material. For example, it advises clarifying which claims should be backed by sources and which can be treated as opinions or placeholders, especially for summaries, marketing copy, or narratives.
This approach helps prevent the model from imagining unsupported details, maintaining accuracy and trustworthiness.
Limit absolute terms like “always” and “never”
The official GPT-5.5 prompting guide advises avoiding unnecessary use of absolute language such as “always,” “never,” “must,” or “only,” unless explicitly needed. Prompts that contain such words—like “ALWAYS search the web” or “NEVER ask questions”—can reduce responsiveness and flexibility.
Instead, it’s better to specify decision rules, such as:
Ask clarifying questions only when missing information would significantly alter the response or lead to high-risk errors.
However, in cases where absolute directives are necessary—like instructing the AI never to perform certain actions—they are acceptable. The key is to avoid unwarranted rigidity that hampers adaptability.
Set clear stopping points
Knowing when to conclude a complex task is crucial, and effectively communicating this in prompts can prevent unnecessary looping or extended outputs, saving tokens and time.
OpenAI suggests including explicit stopping conditions, such as:
Finish solving the user’s query with minimal, meaningful iterations, ensuring accuracy, evidence, and citations are in place before ending.
After each step, question: “Can I satisfactorily address the core request now with credible evidence and proper references?” If yes, wrap up.
The goal is to instruct GPT-5.5 to prioritize comprehensive, correct, and well-supported answers, avoiding premature or incomplete responses.
