Matt Reeves Set To Create More Batman Spinoffs

Matt Reeves is eager to expand the world of The Batman with additional spinoff series. Following the positive reception of The Penguin, it appears he may have the opportunity to do just that.

In a recent conversation with Andy Serkis for Interview Magazine, Reeves discussed The Penguin and his vision for the broader Batman universe. Serkis, who portrayed Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, inquired whether Reeves would pursue a second season of The Penguin or explore a new character-focused series. While not revealing specifics, Reeves confirmed that conversations have initiated regarding the growth of this cinematic universe with new narratives.

“We’ve been having discussions, and it’s thrilling to witness the audience embracing the series,” Reeves noted. “My dream is coming to fruition, which is incredibly exciting, and HBO has been nothing but supportive from the start. Seeing the show’s success is deeply rewarding, and we are exploring options for additional series.”

Reeves elaborated: “I consciously avoided telling an origin story, as many other series tend to do. The concept of focusing on these characters through unique lenses is particularly appealing. It reflects the complexities and imperfections of cities and the world, which are central themes in Batman narratives. Gotham is a place full of potential for greatness. Each character’s journey contributes to a rich, almost epic crime saga with their independent narratives holding unique dramatic significance. Oz’s tale is just one of many that can be portrayed in this fashion.”

Set to premiere this September, The Penguin stars Colin Farrell as Oz Cobblepot, a notorious mob figure vying for dominance over Gotham’s criminal scene after the events depicted in The Batman. Warner Bros. Discovery reported that episode 7 attracted a record 1.9 million viewers across HBO and Max. The season finale of The Penguin is scheduled to air on November 10.

Initially, Reeves intended to create two additional spinoff series: one focused on the Gotham City Police Department and another set in Arkham State Hospital. However, those projects have since been shelved.

His upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II, is slated for release on October 2, 2026.
