Want to age up a toddler in The Sims 4? You can wait for time to pass naturally, but if you’d like to speed things up, there’s a neat trick: have them blow out the candles on a birthday cake. This applies to Sims of all ages, but toddlers will need an adult’s assistance to do it.
Aging up is a key aspect of family life in The Sims 4. Every Sim grows up eventually, even if you have set longer lifespans or are playing as a group of vampires.
With the introduction of infants in The Sims 4: Growing Together, your Sims can have even more complicated and extended lifespans. Here’s how to age up not just toddlers, but babies and infants in The Sims 4 as well.
Steps to Age Up a Toddler in The Sims 4
To age up a toddler, start by getting one of your adult Sims to bake a cake. Click on the refrigerator, choose ‘cook,’ and select from the available cake options. After baking, click on the cake and select ‘add birthday candles.’ Once the candles are on, click the cake again and choose ‘help [toddler’s name] blow out candles.’ If you have more than one toddler, you’ll select the right one from the following screen. A notification will pop up confirming that the toddler has aged up and, if applicable, any reward traits you earned for good parenting.

To boost your chances of unlocking toddler reward traits, focus on developing five key life skills for your toddler: Imagination, Communication, Movement, Potty Training, and Thinking. Potty training is essential, and the other skills set the stage for the next life stage—Childhood.
For instance, a toddler with strong Thinking skills will have improved Mental capabilities when they transition to a child. Fostering these skills requires attentive care; keep them clean, well-fed, and engaged. Spend time reading to them, addressing misbehavior, and surrounding them with toys.
There are three levels for Potty Training and five levels for Imagination, Communication, Movement, and Thinking. If you manage to get all skills to at least level 3, your toddler will receive the Happy Toddler trait upon aging up into a child, which helps them learn new skills faster, beneficial for their future aspirations.
Achieving level 5 in Imagination, Communication, Movement, and Thinking (along with level 3 in Potty Training) will grant the Top-Notch Toddler trait, which accelerates learning even more than the Happy Toddler trait. If you prefer to skip the hard work, there are skill cheats available that let you modify a toddler’s skill levels directly.
