Subnautica 2 is set to make a splash in Xbox Game Preview in 2025, featuring immediate availability on Xbox Game Pass on launch day, as revealed by developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment during the Xbox Partner Preview on Thursday.
While this new survival title was first showcased at an Xbox event, it will also be available through Steam, the Windows Store, and the Epic Games Store on the same day as early access.
“We are diligently working behind the scenes to build the new framework for the next Subnautica experience. Our objective has always been to bring early access to as many community members as we can, developing the game alongside our fans,” said Donya Abramo, the community manager for Unknown Worlds, in an Xbox Wire post following the announcement.
Although it carries a “2” in its title, this is actually the third entry in the Subnautica series, following the original game and its spinoff, Subnautica: Below Zero (which was initially intended as DLC). The new installment greatly expands the universe established in its predecessors. For the first time, players will explore beyond Planet 4546B, encountering new creatures, environments, and biomes. Along with new tools for base building, gamers will face the challenges of surviving in alien oceans while avoiding threats from the local wildlife. While the teaser might present a visually appealing landscape, be warned—danger lurks in the shadows.
The game will also introduce four-player cooperative gameplay, giving players the option to embark on their adventures solo or with friends. This feature will be available at launch during the early access period, ensuring you can jump right in with others. Although it’s a sequel, previous experience with the franchise isn’t necessary to enjoy this title. Abramo assures that even seasoned fans will encounter plenty of new elements. While the specifics remain under wraps, additional details are anticipated as the release date approaches.
