In line with the series’ legacy, Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred reintroduces the traditional Torment difficulty levels. This new system replaces the previous World Tier method, allowing players to choose between Normal and Hard difficulties at the start. As they meet game milestones, they can increase the difficulty. The Torment levels provide even greater challenges and more rewarding loot, including enhanced gear and glyph enhancements.
After reaching level 60, players can explore the Pit of Artificers. This new area is reminiscent of the Rifts from Diablo 3. Here, players can dive deeper to push the limits of their character builds. As they progress to certain levels within the Pit, they will unlock higher Torment difficulties, raising the stakes and the rewards.

How to Unlock Torment Difficulty in Diablo 4
Progressing Through the Pit
Once players hit level 60, they can take on the Pit of Artificers, colloquially known as “The Pit.” Located in Cerrigar, Scosglen, this dungeon is accessed through an obelisk—similar to starting Greater Rifts in New Tristram from Diablo 3. The Pit features randomized layouts and enemies, ensuring each run offers something new.
To initiate a new run, players must use three Artificer’s Stones, which can be collected from various in-game activities like Helltides, Tree of Whisper caches, and World Boss events. With three stones, players can activate the Pit and select their desired level.
To unlock higher levels in the Pit, players need to complete dungeons within a set time frame—specifically, fifteen minutes. The quicker the completion, the more levels players can open. There are a total of 150 levels, with each level awarding better loot.
- Four or Fewer Minutes Remaining: Unlocks 1 Tier
- Four to Six Minutes Remaining: Unlocks 2 Tiers
- Six or More Minutes Remaining: Unlocks 3 Tiers
Previously, players could only improve glyphs by running Nightmare Dungeons, which often required extended exploration and could be time-consuming. Now, players can level up glyphs through Pit runs, facilitating quicker progression.
For every 20 levels between the Pit tier and glyph rank, players can access an additional bonus upgrade. This mechanic enables faster growth for players with lower-level glyphs.
Torment difficulty levels can be unlocked by completing higher levels of The Pit, whether solo or in a group. Progressing to a new threshold in the Pit allows players to raise the difficulty to the next Torment level.
- Torment I requires Pit level 20
- Torment II requires Pit level 35
- Torment III requires Pit level 50
- Torment IV requires Pit level 65
Once players reach Torment IV, they’re set for a thrilling journey through Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred. Continuing through the Pit will heighten the challenge and unlock the best gear and items, allowing players to refine their characters even further.
