Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will still support last-generation consoles. It will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. As one of the top multiplayer experiences each year, it will also feature cross-platform play.

Trailers

The reveal trailer sets Black Ops 6 in 1991, following the events of Cold War. The storyline starts with Russel Adler resurfacing in Kuwait, where a web of conspiracies involving a group named The Pantheon—who have infiltrated the CIA—starts to unfold. This prompts players, alongside Adler and new characters Sev and Felix, to operate outside the confines of the law to undermine their plans. Naturally, Frank Woods returns, now serving as a mentor within the CIA rather than active combat roles, guiding protagonist Troy Marshall.

Players can expect a varied array of mission styles, including classic high-octane shootouts, stealthy infiltrations, and even some non-combat scenarios, like a casino heist, allowing for multiple approaches including diplomacy instead of gunfighting.

The open mission design reintroduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 returns, offering players more freedom in how they tackle objectives.

A dedicated trailer for Zombies has unveiled the new characters players will embody. This time, the roster includes Grigori Weaver, Elizabeth Grey, Mackenzie “Mac” Carver, Oskar Strauss, William Peck, and Maya Aguinaldo. The narrative picks up several years after the events in the Zombies mode of Cold War, continuing the Dark Aether storyline in a new Terminus outpost located in the Philippine Sea. The initial scenes depict a breakout scenario and the mission to find Mac’s missing brother amidst the chaos.

In a final effort to build excitement, Activision has released a launch gameplay trailer that highlights rising tensions between the U.S. and Saddam Hussein, who appears to be in possession of biological weapons. True to the Black Ops style, a deeper narrative is at play that won’t be fully revealed until the game’s release.

Gameplay

The most significant shift in gameplay for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the introduction of what the developers are dubbing as Omnimovement. The standout feature is the capability to sprint in any direction, including backward. The options for sliding, diving, and prone movements have been enhanced to ensure fluid and dynamic gameplay.

Multiplayer will debut with 16 fresh maps, with 12 designated for 6v6 matches and four suitable for either 6v6 or 2v2 gameplay.

Once players reach the maximum level in multiplayer, the classic Prestige system returns, allowing for another round of leveling to unlock all weapons and gear anew. Ten Prestige levels are available, each unlocking new rewards. Players can then attain Prestige Master before embarking on an additional 1,000-level journey.

Additionally, for the first time in the franchise, players will have the freedom to customize their HUD, rearranging or hiding crucial information during gameplay.

The Zombies mode is making a comeback, reverting to its arcade roots. It will continue the Dark Aether narrative and feature two new round-based maps at launch: Terminus and Liberty Falls. The gameplay trailer spotlights the Terminus map, filled with action, weaponry, and various environmental options to fend off hordes.

One new weapon, the Beamsmasher, described as “an experimental powerhouse with three unique damage types,” will assist players in battling against waves of adversaries on Terminus Island. A new killstreak called Mutant Injection allows players to temporarily transform into a Mangler. Players will also encounter a new system called Augments, which lets them enhance perks, mods, and field upgrades, with choices for both major and minor improvements.

Great news for solo players: you can now save your progress and quit during a Zombies match, making it easier to take breaks without losing progress in these marathon sessions.

During Opening Night Live 2024, we were treated to an in-depth look at a campaign level titled “Most Wanted.” This segment involves the team sneaking into a facility for a hostage rescue, which quickly escalates into high-octane action. The gameplay showcases a mix of camera angles, introducing an FPS experience that pits players against heavily armed foes equipped with miniguns. This demonstrates the new movement mechanics, allowing players to sprint and slide in various directions.

A new explosive knife capable of being thrown and remotely detonated further enhances the gameplay dynamics.

The trailer culminates in an exhilarating motorcycle chase, reminiscent of thrilling on-rails shooting sequences that fans enjoy.

The multiplayer aspect of Black Ops 6 received its own dedicated reveal trailer. It kicks off by hinting at potential takedown maneuvers within a familiar strip mall map. A significant new feature is the ability to utilize enemies as human shields, allowing players to maneuver while still engaging in combat. The Omnimovement mechanics are prominently displayed, demonstrating how players can dive, roll, slide, and swim throughout the environments. The trailer wraps up by reiterating the inclusion of 16 new maps, the return of the Gunsmith feature, and the traditional Prestige system.
