Each year, technology reviewer MKBHD presents his Smartphone Awards, recognizing the top devices across several categories. For the 2024 edition, the YouTube sensation highlighted ten different categories, ultimately selecting the iPhone 16 as the Best Small Phone, a choice that surprised many.
MKBHD pointed out that the definition of a small smartphone has evolved significantly in recent times, especially as numerous manufacturers, including Apple, have shifted away from compact designs. The previously popular mini-sized iPhone was replaced by the larger iPhone 14 Plus back in 2022, and since then, we’ve yet to see a return to smaller models. Nonetheless, MKBHD crowned the iPhone 16 as the Best Small Phone for 2024.
With its 6.1-inch screen, the device ranks as relatively compact by current market standards. Marques commended Apple for enhancing this year’s entry-level model with numerous features typically reserved for the Pro versions, all while maintaining a lightweight and manageable size. It’s an excellent choice for users looking for robust performance without needing an oversized display.
Highlights from MKBHD Smartphone Awards 2024
In the photography department, the iPhone 16 Pro took home the award for Best Camera. While MKBHD acknowledged that other devices, such as the Vivo X200 Pro, feature more advanced sensors, he argued that the iPhone remains compelling due to its overall excellence—especially for high-quality video recording.
However, Marques designated the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra as the Phone of the Year. Although it may be perceived as “boring” due to its lack of groundbreaking features like a foldable design, he lauded its impressive screen, exceptional battery life, and quality cameras. MKBHD specifically praised the new anti-reflective coating and noted that the S24 Ultra was his most-used phone over the past year.
