Apple has subtly introduced a revamped iPad Mini, marking the first refresh of its smallest tablet since 2021, via a press release. Priced starting at $499, the upgraded Mini is currently available for pre-order and will hit stores next Wednesday.
This latest iteration primarily focuses on enhancing performance, powered by Apple’s advanced A17 Pro chip. This new chip offers a 30% increase in CPU speed, a 25% boost in GPU performance, and a Neural Engine that operates twice as fast as the previous version. The entry-level model now features 128GB of storage, increased from 64GB, and it supports the newly unveiled Apple Pencil Pro, making it attractive to artists who favor the Mini’s compact design. Additionally, the updated device includes faster Wi-Fi 6E and an improved USB-C port, enhancing its functionality while retaining the classic design.
One of the standout changes in design is the introduction of new color options, including understated purple and blue models. However, these shades are more subdued compared to the vibrant colors found on the iPhone 16. The last significant redesign for the iPad Mini occurred in 2021, and this new version maintains that aesthetic while providing a performance upgrade that aligns with Apple’s AI advancements. Apple also noted that the new model supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, enhancing visual experiences in gaming.
The iPad Mini has always been somewhat unique within Apple’s tablet lineup, akin to the iPhone SE. It enjoys a dedicated fanbase, particularly among pilots, although the larger iPad models generally attract more attention. Earlier this year, Apple updated its other iPad models, leading some to speculate about the Mini’s future. Nevertheless, Apple seems content to keep the Mini on a distinct update schedule compared to its other tablets.
