Apple has announced the launch of the iPhone 16e, which was initially thought to be the fourth-generation iPhone SE.
However, this new model offers much more, justifying its price tag of $599—$170 higher than the previous iPhone SE. Departing from earlier SE models, the iPhone 16e showcases a fresh design featuring a 6.1-inch display that mirrors the iPhone 16, along with Ceramic Shield protection on the front. It is available in black and white, both with a sleek matte finish.
True to the iPhone 16 line, the iPhone 16e is equipped with an Action Button on the side that can be customized for various functions, including Visual Intelligence. However, unlike other iPhone 16 models, it does not have Camera Control functionality.
A significant upgrade is found in the camera system: the iPhone 16e sports a single 48-megapixel rear camera, a major enhancement compared to previous SE versions. This allows for a 2x optical zoom equivalent by cropping into the central 12 megapixels of the image. The front-facing camera maintains a 12-megapixel resolution, consistent with other models in the iPhone 16 range.
The iPhone 16e is powered by the A18 chip and features Apple’s proprietary C1 modem. It offers storage options that start at 128GB, with additional 256GB and 512GB variants available. Contrary to previous speculation, a 64GB version does not exist. Moreover, the device boasts outstanding battery life, providing up to 26 hours of video playback, which is an improvement over the iPhone 16’s 22 hours.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e will begin on February 21, with its official release scheduled for February 28. With a suite of enhanced features and an elevated price point, it clearly distinguishes itself from the SE lineup and offers an impressive array of capabilities including Face ID, an OLED display, USB-C connectivity, and satellite support, making it an appealing choice for many Apple enthusiasts.
