Digital Phablet – American actor and musician Jared Leto has faced allegations of sexual assault from four women, all of whom were teenagers at the time of the incidents.

These allegations came to light following the BBC documentary, “Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret,” which features testimonials from ten women accusing the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman. The BBC also disclosed that nine of these women shared their stories publicly for the first time in the documentary.

  • 11-Year-Old’s Tragic Death Sheds Light on Rising Sexual Violence in India

11-Year-Old’s Tragic Death Sheds Light on Rising Sexual Violence in India

On a Saturday evening this month, an 11-year-old girl left her home to attend a friend’s birthday party in a small town in eastern India. She never made it back.

According to a local police officer, she was abducted, assaulted, placed in a sack, and then thrown into a pond while still alive by a group of men.

This incident highlights the ongoing brutal sexual violence prevalent throughout India, where over 80 rapes are reported daily to law enforcement, based on figures from the National Crime Records Bureau. Many more assaults remain unreported due to victim-blaming and shame, activists note.

Deep-rooted patriarchy and misogyny, understaffed police forces, and lengthy judicial processes contribute to a sense among many perpetrators that they can escape punishment for assaulting women. This perceived impunity encourages the continued spread of such crimes, activists say.

The 2012 gang rape and murder of a student in Delhi led to significant legal reforms, including harsher penalties for offenders and the creation of fast-track courts. Despite India’s economic growth and rise into the ranks of the world’s top economies, its record on sexual violence remains troublingly unchanged.

In Baruipur, locals—among them her 46-year-old father—watched in shock as her lifeless body, marred by bite marks and bruises, was recovered from a pond strewn with trash the morning after she disappeared, according to police and local residents.

“My mind is blank. I haven’t been able to think straight for days,” her father told Reuters.

Reuters is not revealing the identities of the girl and her family due to Indian laws that prohibit sharing details that could identify victims or survivors in such cases.

The incident has put Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party under scrutiny just months after it gained control of West Bengal—where Baruipur is located—with promises to improve women’s safety. Nonetheless, activists argue that no political change can address the foundational issues: patriarchy that dominates many Indian communities, lack of gender-sensitive officials in police and judicial institutions, and violence linked to caste divisions.

India reported 29,536 rapes in 2024, a figure that has remained relatively stable in recent years, even as crimes involving children have surged over the past decade. The number of cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act hit a record high of 69,191.

In just the past month, two more high-profile cases have captured national attention. In Rajasthan, a 12-year-old girl was abducted, drugged, and assaulted over four days at various hotels before police rescued her. Since then, 22 suspects have been arrested. Meanwhile, a report from the Times of India detailed the rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl, whose body was discarded in an empty shaft of an under-construction mall near India’s parliament.

Legal expert Karuna Nundy, who helped draft anti-rape legislation, said that no government has made a serious effort to eradicate the misogyny and patriarchy at the core of these crimes.

“There needs to be ongoing work to change attitudes within communities,” she stated. “It’s crucial to appoint trained police officers and judges who understand these issues from a gender-sensitive perspective.”

Despite tougher sentences enacted after the 2012 Delhi bus case, which sparked nationwide protests, little change has occurred. “Nothing will shift just because the government changes,” said Kolkata-based gender rights activist Satabdi Das. “This is a deeply rooted cultural issue, not confined to West Bengal but present across India.”

The government had planned to establish 2,600 fast-track courts dedicated to sexual violence cases by 2026. However, official data show only 755 such courts are operational nationwide, including 410 specialized for child abuse cases.

India’s National Commission for Women has pointed out that the Baruipur incident exposes significant administrative failures, policing gaps, and weak oversight that have allowed such crimes to persist.

Rajasthan police officials reported swift action in the abduction case, including the arrest of suspects and rescue efforts. In the Baruipur case, the girl’s family believes a rapid police response might have saved her life. “Other than asking around locally, the police didn’t do much that night,” a family friend told Reuters. Residents had to turn detective themselves, reviewing CCTV footage to help the investigation.

Police spokesperson Arvind Kumar Anand said the department is reviewing internal reports to determine where mistakes may have been made.

Public frustration over sluggish legal proceedings has also fueled support for extrajudicial killings, where police shoot suspects in disputed circumstances. In Baruipur, one suspect was killed after allegedly resisting arrest and attempting to snatch a weapon, police said. A West Bengal government minister claimed four suspects had been arrested and one was killed in a police encounter, framing it as a message of firm action.

However, human rights advocates warn that such killings bypass judicial processes and weaken the rule of law. “Police shootings are often more about creating a spectacle to appease public anger,” said activist Vrinda Grover. “Rather than deterring crime, they empower arbitrary use of police authority over civilians’ lives.”

A police inquiry is underway in Australia concerning allegations of sexual assault made against Katy Perry by actress Ruby Rose, known for roles in “Batgirl” and “Orange Is the New Black.” The pop icon has denied the accusations, calling them “reckless falsehoods.”

Victoria Police revealed in a statement to Variety: “Detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are examining a reported historical sexual assault incident from Melbourne in 2010.” The incident purportedly took place at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s central business district. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further comments are appropriate at this time.

Ruby Rose has publicly accused Perry of assaulting her nearly 20 years ago. She claims Perry forcibly rubbed her “disgusting v**ina” on her face, which led to her vomiting. Rose indicated she filed a police report regarding the incident just hours earlier.

In a social media post on Threads, Rose detailed that Perry sexually attacked her at a Melbourne nightclub when they were both in their early twenties—Rose is now 40, and Perry is 41. “Katy Perry assaulted me at the Spice Market Nightclub in Melbourne,” Rose wrote. When asked about Perry’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance, Rose dismissed the concern, stating, “Who cares what she thinks.”

Perry’s spokesperson dismissed the allegations in a statement to Variety, asserting, “The false claims circulating online by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are dangerous and reckless lies. Ms. Rose has a history of making serious public allegations on social media that are consistently denied by those named.”

Perry’s team did not immediately comment on the police investigation. Rose, in a subsequent Threads post, clarified her stance, saying she has finalized all her police reports and will no longer discuss the cases publicly, stating, “In many ways, this brings me relief. I am not ignoring others’ experiences; I’m complying with police procedures.”

She added, “She didn’t kiss me. I was trying to avoid her by resting on my friend’s lap when she bent down and, inappropriately, rubbed her private parts on my face until I vomited.”

The controversy continues as Rose stated she does not intend to file a police report initially but later confirmed she had completed all reports, emphasizing her relief in complying with the legal process.

Two Afghan teens jailed for assault in England

Two teenage Afghan asylum seekers, who arrived in Britain alone within the past year, received lengthy detention sentences Monday for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in central England.

The suspects, Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, both 17, assaulted the girl in a Leamington Spa park in May after removing her from her friends while she was heavily intoxicated, prosecutors told Warwick Crown Court.

A video the distressed girl managed to record during the assault was played at the trial, showing her crying loudly and pleading, “Please help me… let me go… I want to go home.”

In a victim impact statement, the girl said, “The day I was raped changed me as a person,” describing it as her first sexual experience.

This incident has became part of a broader political debate in Britain, where concerns over crimes, particularly sexual offenses committed by asylum seekers, are rising amid efforts to curb the surge of migrants crossing the English Channel by small boats.

Recent cases include an Afghan national admitting to raping a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton, and an Ethiopian man serving time after being convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage girl and an adult woman in Epping, north of London. These incidents sparked protests, some turning violent, and demonstrations outside hotels housing asylum seekers. Immigration issues have also boosted the popularity of the nationalist Reform UK party in opinion polls.

Recognizing the public concern, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano ordered that the two 17-year-olds be named, citing the public interest, despite their age.

Jahanzeb, who will turn 18 at the beginning of next year, was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison, while Niazal received a sentence of nine years and 10 months.

Jahanzeb’s attorney, Robert Holt, stated his client traveled solo through Europe, attempting four times to cross the Channel on a small boat before successfully reaching Britain in January. He is expected to be deported after serving his sentence.

Niazal’s lawyer, Joshua Radcliffe, explained that his client arrived alone in November to escape the Taliban, who had murdered his father, a former Afghan army member. He awaits a decision on his asylum application, though the judge indicated she would recommend his deportation once he completes his sentence.

Judge de Bertodano emphasized that the teenagers had acted against the interests of those seeking refuge in Britain.

  • Saad Lamjarred Faces Trial on Sexual Assault Charges in France

Saad Lamjarred Faces Trial on Sexual Assault Charges in France

Digital Phablet – Renowned Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred is scheduled to appear in a court case in France on Monday concerning allegations of sexual assault against a waitress in 2018.

Sources report that this is the fourth time the 40-year-old artist has been accused of assault, with previous cases dating back to 2010, 2016, and 2017. While Lamjarred was detained in 2010 on suspicion of rape in the United States, he was released on bail after reaching a settlement with the complainant.

In addition, a French-Moroccan woman accused him of assaulting her in Casablanca in 2017. Furthermore, in 2023, the singer was sentenced in France to six years in prison for sexually assaulting and physically assaulting a young woman at a hotel in Paris in 2016.

    ### Saad Lamjarred Faces Trial on French Sexual Assault Charges

On Monday, the Moroccan singer will appear before a court in southeastern France on charges of raping a waitress in 2018, allegations the artist strongly denies. He will be released on bail, with the court session scheduled at the “Draguignan” courthouse.

Despite the ongoing charges, Lamjarred remains free until proven guilty. The alleged incident took place at a bar in Saint-Tropez, with the singer denying the claim of sexual misconduct. The verdict is expected to be announced on Thursday following the hearing. The victim’s attorney described her ordeal as “a night of horror” and emphasized that she has patiently awaited justice for seven years.

According to her account, she met Lamjarred at a nightclub without initially recognizing his fame. After learning of his successful career, she agreed to join him for a drink at his hotel. She claims that he then took her to his room and assaulted her, though Lamjarred alleges that their interactions were consensual.

A video related to this case highlights the ongoing legal proceedings and public interest surrounding the singer’s case.
