Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have found that sodium alginate, a substance derived from seaweed and commonly used to improve food texture, can make natural materials like clay and sand much easier to 3D print into durable structures. This breakthrough could potentially cut down on construction waste and reduce the environmental footprint of building projects.

    Humans have utilized earth as a primary building material for thousands of years. Traditional structures such as adobe homes were crafted from clay, sand, and other natural elements. Many animals also use earth-based construction: termites build towering mounds, wasps create complex nests, and honeycomb worms form reef-like structures along coastlines. These creatures don’t rely on cement; instead, they depend on natural biopolymers—substances acting like glue—to bind soil particles together.

    Inspired by these natural architects, the research team wanted to discover which biopolymers could help turn soil into a suitable material for modern 3D printing. They tested five food-grade biopolymers. Some are already used in products like salad dressings to prevent ingredients from separating, while others come from seaweed or are produced through sugar fermentation.

    One of these substances, locust bean gum, tightly bonded soil particles, creating a strong material. However, it also made the mixture too thick and difficult to extrude through a 3D printer. Sodium alginate, on the other hand, behaved differently. Instead of acting like glue, it altered the electrical charges on clay particles, causing them to repel each other—similar to like poles of magnets pushing apart.

    This charge-based effect allowed soil particles to stay evenly suspended in the mixture while flowing smoothly through the printer nozzle. The result was a material that could be printed quickly and more easily. Remarkably, only a tiny amount of sodium alginate—about 0.12%—was necessary. When added to soil from a Colorado granite quarry, the mixture became both stronger and more printable. It could withstand roughly 25% more pressure than untreated soil and was about 33% faster to print.

    Using this new formulation, the team crafted a thin wall only 8 millimeters thick that remained stable even when tilted at a 60-degree angle—steeper than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The researchers highlight that earthen building materials offer additional advantages: earth naturally helps regulate indoor humidity, absorbs some pollutants from the air, and provides insulation, keeping buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

    Moreover, construction projects often produce large amounts of excavated soil while digging foundations, basements, or parking lots, much of which ends up in landfills. The new approach could enable builders to reuse soil directly on-site, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Since clay and sand are among the most plentiful natural resources, this seaweed-derived additive could pave the way for more sustainable, environmentally friendly construction worldwide.

    How to Build a Foundation in Paralives

    There isn’t a special tool specifically for foundations in Paralives, but you can easily do it with the Walls tool, making some adjustments as you go. A foundation allows for more dynamic layouts and makes it easier to add features like verandas or patios.

    To start, select Build Mode and then switch to the Wall Placement Mode. Use the wall tool to outline the shape of your foundation; initially, it will appear as a series of straight, standard-length walls. Next, click on a wall and drag the top arrow downward to adjust its height. We suggest lowering the walls to about the third dot, but feel free to customize it to your preference.

    Once you’ve shaped your foundation, you’ll notice it looks like a large space for short characters, but this will change. Use the Move Up One Floor arrow to lift the floor to the top of the walls, creating a proper foundation. Now, you can freely build on top of it, adding patios and outdoor areas for your Paras to enjoy.

    Foundations can be decorated just like walls. Consider adding contrasting brick patterns, plants, shrubs, or outdoor furniture like barbecues and patio chairs for a finished look. Remember, the foundation is considered part of the first floor, so keep that in mind if you decide to make changes later.

    To craft a Habitat Builder, you need to use your Fabricator at the lifepod. The materials required are quartz, copper, and a basic battery. Quartz is located inside large coral domes, while copper can be found in caves and under rocky openings.

    You can also find a basic battery at some research stations scattered around or craft one yourself using acid. Once you craft the Habitat Builder, you’ll unlock blueprints for simple structures like a corridor and hatch. Use these blueprints to establish your first base on Proteus and install a new Fabricator for more advanced crafting options.

    ### Each Building Has a Special Role on Your Island

    Although the main goal is to create unique Miis and watch them live happily on your island, having shops and buildings is essential for making your residents stand out and stay satisfied.

    In the early part of the game, during the tutorial, you’ll build the basics and learn the controls. But as you progress, new buildings unlock by completing various goals around the island. Some are almost automatic—mainly the ones crucial to keeping your Miis happy—while others are secondary and require dedicated work and island growth.

    Below, we’ve broken down each building to clearly explain what it is, when it becomes available, and why you’ll need it.

    ### The Wishing Fountain

    The central hub on your island is the Fountain, which starts in the middle but can be moved later with the Island Builder tool once it unlocks. This is where you’ll spend Warm Fuzzies to upgrade the island gradually, earning rewards along the way. It’s also the location for several main events, so you’ll visit often.

    You can choose from a variety of items such as:

    – Level-up rewards, like unique quirks or items for your Miis.
    – Interior sets from T&C Reno, for home decor.
    – Quick Build options for exterior decorations.
    – Patterns for walkways via the Island Builder.
    – Custom design options from the Pattern Workshop.
    – Travel Tickets for taking Miis on trips.

    At the start of each day, check the Fountain to gather island funds contributed overnight by your Miis.

    ### Fresh Kingdom

    Soon after creating your first Mii and interacting with the pondering bubble above their head, they’ll mention feeling hungry. That’s your cue to build Fresh Kingdom, the island’s grocery store that sells a wide variety of foods for your Miis to eat.

    Every day, the store offers four Daily Specials—new foods likely to include some almost 500 different options. When you enter, you’ll see the Daily Specials, which refresh daily, offering something new for everyone.

    Food costs money, so be prepared to spend! Once you’ve purchased a food item, you can buy it again at any time. Non-special items can be found through additional store tabs, covering meals, desserts, drinks, and custom-made foods.

    ### Wear & Where

    Once you have at least three Miis, you’ll unlock Wear & Where—your dedicated clothing shop. This is where you can buy all kinds of clothes and accessories like:

    – Full outfits, including themed sets and costumes.
    – Tops, with many different styles for different seasons.
    – Pants, skirts, and even quirky items like diapers.
    – Headgear, such as hats and masks.
    – Accessories, including necklaces and fun accessories.
    – Socks and shoes suitable for any style.

    ### T&C Reno

    The first shop that requires you to have at least two pairs of friends (four Miis total) is T&C Reno, your go-to for home renovation and decorating.

    Here, you can buy full-room decoration sets, called “sets,” that let you style your Miis’ homes to express their unique personalities with interior and exterior designs. Most new set options are unlocked manually as you upgrade your island via the Fountain, but there’s also a Weekly Special that remains for a full week, allowing you time to save up for premium sets.

    ### Quik Build

    After building T&C Reno and making five Miis, you’ll unlock Quik Build. This location offers exterior decoration items like fences, flowers, trees, toys, and more—perfect for customizing your island with the Island Designer.

    New items become available as you grant wishes for them at the Fountain, and each time you unlock a new item, you’ll get one free to start your collection. Use Quik Build whenever you want to spend money on outdoor decorations and create your ideal paradise.

    ### Palette House

    Once you’ve made six Miis, the Palette House becomes accessible. This feature harnesses the touchscreen to let you draw and design various elements, such as:

    ### The Market

    Operational three times a day—morning, afternoon, and evening—the Market unlocks after your Miis’ happiness levels are sufficiently high. It’s an easy way to gather a variety of new items at a discount, including clothing, food, and treasures. Now a truck instead of a table, the Market always offers deals, typically at about 50% off.

    ### Foto-Tomo

    The number of missing persons remains unknown, as no updates have been issued since early Thursday. At Sha Tin hospital, Wong, a woman in her late 30s, searched for her sister-in-law and her twin sister, both of whom are still unaccounted for.

    “We still haven’t located them, so we’re visiting different hospitals to see if we get any good news,” Wong said tearfully. “We were waiting at Prince of Wales Hospital on the first day, but there was no word. We came back again yesterday.”

    Most of the puzzles in Lego Voyagers are quick and simple, designed to keep the story moving fast. However, the train track puzzle is much bigger and takes a whole chapter to complete. Some chapters may only last a minute or so, but once you reach Chapter 29 and see the scene in front of you, you’ll realize this puzzle will require some effort.

    In this part, the red brick and blue brick each have specific jobs. You need to work together to steer a vehicle and gather the materials needed to rebuild the train tracks so you can keep your train ride going.

    Where to Find Pink Bricks to Repair the Train Tracks

    At the start of Chapter 29, you’ll come to some train tracks that are broken and missing pieces.

    Your task is to gather bricks from the drop sites and take them to the top left section of the map by opening doors and clearing the way for your vehicle. To your immediate left, there’s a two-brick truck you can use as you look for materials to fix the tracks.

    Use the white lever on the left to move the vehicle forward and backward. The back white brick controls the direction of the wheels.

    Follow the road to the right, then down the path until you reach the first drop of materials.

    Next, park the vehicle under the blue conveyor belt. The blue brick needs to connect with the lever to activate it and cause a group of bricks to drop into the truck.

    Collect the pink bricks that fall, then move further east.

    Continue heading east and park your vehicle in a corner below another conveyor belt. Use the lever with the blue brick to grab more pink bricks, then keep moving forward.

    Head north through an open gate, passing through another fence by having one brick hold the lever in place.

    You’ll see a small path blocked with two railings. To cross, align the vehicle so one brick opens the path with the lever. The driver then moves straight over the barrier before rejoining the brick holding the lever.

    Proceed along the path to the southeast and park your vehicle just below another conveyor belt. Activate the lever with the blue brick to gather more pink bricks, then continue.

    Move north through the open gate and pass through the fence by using the lever held by a brick.

    You’ll find an exit door to the left that can be opened by connecting to the console nearby.

    Keep moving east along the path and return up under the final drop zone to the northeast, following the red arrow.

    Once there, take the pink bricks to the very top left where you will see a smelting machine.

    How to Turn the Pink Bricks Into Train Tracks

    Use the collected bricks to repair the missing pieces of the train tracks at the beginning of the section.

    Bring the bricks back to the starting point and assemble the new segments to complete the track.

    After the tracks are fixed, climb onto the boxes southeast of the train and attach them to the yellow slots on the top to finish Chapter 29.

    How to Repair the Train Tracks

    Once you have the supplies, bring the train tracks back to the missing pieces at the start and repair them. Collect the supplies from the boxes and connect the pieces to rebuild the tracks. When finished, go to the top of the boxes to the southeast of the train and attach them to the yellow slots to conclude the chapter.

    Surviving After the Abiotic Factor Crisis

    With GATE in chaos following the incident at Abiotic Factor, you’ll need to survive using whatever tools you can find. You might make arrows out of pens and use parts of decks as weapons. Since you’re a new employee, you also have less access than others, making things harder.

    Most of the scientists are gone or missing, so you’ll have to build makeshift technology to escape the facility. A crucial part is taking the Security Bot CPU, but to get it, you’ll need to destroy Security Bots. These robots don’t like having their parts taken and can be dangerous to fight.

    How to Kill Security Bots

    To get a Security Bot CPU, you must destroy a Security Bot, but they can be very dangerous. In the early game, they can kill you in four or five hits even if you wear decent armor.

    Security Bots become active from 9 PM to 6 AM when the power goes out. During these hours, they patrol their assigned areas. When the power comes back in the morning, they go back to their stations and stay inactive.

    You can find Security Bots in the Office Sector and Manufacturing West. The easiest one to reach is in the Cafeteria of the Office Sector, just below the Security Station with Warren.

    Other easy locations include:

    • Level Three of the Office Sector, looping through areas near Alice Mayfield and the large Executive Office.
    • The office area past Reception, which they patrol in a circle near their station on the wall.

    Security Bots’ headlights turn red when they see you or enemies, and they have good sight from a distance. However, because they walk slowly, you can outrun them by hiding or preparing to fight.

    Security Bots have three types of attacks: a melee punch that stuns briefly, an electrical tackle that stuns and has short range, and a spin attack with high knockback that hits multiple enemies. They prefer to use the spin attack when they are surrounded.

    The easiest and safest way to kill them early is to set a Shock Trap in their path and then shoot them with a Makeshift Crossbow loaded with around 30 to 40 bolts, depending on your accuracy. Once they see you, walk backward so they step onto the Shock Trap and get stunned for a few seconds. Hit them with bolts while backing up and circle around near the trap to keep them stunned.

    Natural electrical hazards, like electrified water on Level Three, can also stun and damage Security Bots, making them easier to kill.

    After defeating a Security Bot, it will drop a few sodas. You can use a Kitchen Knife to butcher it like an alien, but the process takes longer.

    They always drop Robot Oil and one Security Bot CPU, a vital resource. Sometimes, they also drop Metal Scraps, Coils, Glass Scrap, and Tech Scrap. Setting up automated farms for Security Bots can help you gather large amounts of Metal Scraps without breaking many cabinets.

    What to Do With Security Bot CPUs

    The main use for Security Bot CPUs is to craft Computational Bricks. These are essential for creating several key items: the Controller, Infrared Emitter, and the LCD Screen, which are used to make the Keypad Hacker.

    How to Find Alice Mayfield

    To reach Alice Mayfield, go left from Reception toward the Security Office, follow the path to the office, and use an Energy Brick to open the nearby shutters. This unlocks a shortcut back to Manufacturing West and a lift to Level Three.

    Ride the lift to a small research area with radiation warnings, then go to the portal at the end of the catwalk to reach Anteverse II. This area offers key resources like Anteverse Wheat and fights with Exor enemies for their Hearts, which can upgrade your workbench.

    Follow the path through Anteverse II to another portal leading back to Level Three. Cross the pipes, jump over electrified water, and head toward Silo Three.

    Remember to unlock the elevator across from where Alice is located; this will give you a shortcut back to the main entrance, making travel easier in the future.

    Alice Mayfield is in an unlocked room near the entrance of Silo Three. She will provide the recipe for the Keypad Hacker, all the parts needed, and some hints on how to use it effectively.

    However, it’s important to note that Zurgo only prevents your Warrior tokens from being sacrificed at the end step. Other effects might force the tokens to be sacrificed during or after combat, and in those cases, Zurgo’s ability won’t apply.

    Costing only three mana, you can get Zurgo onto the battlefield as early as turn two. It’s wise to play Zurgo as soon as possible to fill the board quickly with Warrior tokens, making it easier to overwhelm your opponents.

    Isshin, Two Heavens As One

    Isshin, Two Heavens as One acts as a secondary commander in your strategy. Since all your mobilize effects are triggered abilities, Isshin causes them to activate twice. This is particularly powerful with cards that produce multiple tokens through their mobilize abilities.

    Typically, you should only bring Isshin onto the battlefield when you already have a few mobilize creatures in play. On its own, Isshin doesn’t do much without any combat triggers activated. If it gets removed, it can be quite challenging to get it back, so time your play wisely.

    Bone-Cairn Butcher

    Bone-Cairn Butcher is like a friend to your tokens, turning them into serious threats by giving them deathtouch. Normally, opponents wouldn’t care much about a 1/1 creature, but Bone-Cairn Butcher makes sure they think twice before blocking, as they risk losing a creature in the process.

    Keep in mind that your tokens will only gain deathtouch while they are attacking, so it’s not a permanent effect.

    Since Bone-Cairn Butcher has mobilize, it can also generate threatening tokens. You don’t need to attack with Bone-Cairn Butcher for its effect to activate, so if attacking puts it at risk, you can hold it back and let your tokens handle the heavy lifting.

    Mirkwood Bats

    Thanks to the abundance of tokens, Mirkwood Bats can dish out significant burn damage. It triggers whenever a token is created or sacrificed​​, so if Zurgo is not in play, mobilizing will yield two triggers per token created.

    The strength of Mirkwood Bats comes into play especially when Zurgo is not on the battlefield. However, even if Zurgo is present, you can still get burn damage from the tokens you generate. Mirkwood Bats is crucial in quickly reducing opponent life totals, paving the way for victories through combat.

    Cathars’ Crusade

    Cathars’ Crusade is one of the most powerful cards you can include in a Zurgo, Thunder’s Decree deck, assuming you’re willing to keep adding counters to your creatures. Every token created through mobilize results in all your creatures receiving a +1/+1 counter.

    Importantly, Cathars’ Crusade triggers for every creature that enters the battlefield. So if you attack with a creature that has mobilize three, each of your creatures will gain three +1/+1 counters. This can result in massive swings in damage and elevate even your weakest creatures into significant threats with just a few activations.

    How to Play the Deck

    The goal of a Zurgo, Thunder’s Decree Commander deck is to keep attacking, especially with creatures that have mobilize. The strategy floods the battlefield with numerous creature tokens, which should consistently be sent into battle. This is a very aggressive Commander deck where attacking is fundamental.

    While mobilize is crucial, keep in mind that the creatures with it can be delicate. Cards like Dolmen Gate and Iroas, God of Victory are helpful as they prevent damage to your attacking creatures, keeping your assault safe.

    You can also create tokens through various means beyond mobilizing. Some cards generate creature copies that sacrifice at the end step, but with Zurgo on the battlefield, these copies can remain in play permanently. Although you typically can’t copy legendary creatures, there are many powerful nonlegendary options available.

    The primary win condition for this deck is through combat. With mobilize and Zurgo, you can fill the battlefield with tokens to consistently attack each turn. Cards like Starry-Eyed Skyrider can grant your attacking tokens flying, while Bone-Cairn Butcher offers deathtouch, making them more difficult to block. You also have numerous ways to deal damage through burn effects, such as sacrificing tokens with Goblin Bombardment or using Mirkwood Bats.

    A significant weakness of this deck lies in the low toughness of your creatures. While the mobilizing strategy is effective, the resulting tokens are still 1/1 creatures. Thankfully, cards such as Shared Animosity, Cathars’ Crusade, and Renewed Solidarity can enhance their stats, transforming them into bigger threats. You might also find it challenging to generate mana, as Mardu lacks many strong ramp options.

    Upgrading your Village Hub provides multiple benefits, including the number of NPCs you can house or the crafting recipes you can unlock. For instance, recipes for Log Cabin houses are available only by upgrading a Village Hub located in the Grasslands.

    To enhance a Village Hub, you must create a town and integrate new elements like additional housing and decorations. To unlock all pre-built crafting recipes, you’ll need a Level Ten Village Hub in nearly every biome.

    Exploring Every Goal in Planet Coaster 2’s Bifrost Scenario

    In Planet Coaster 2, you’ll find numerous scenarios to explore while you master the art of building your own roller coasters and water parks. Your imagination knows no bounds, allowing you to tailor every detail of your theme park to create the ultimate guest experience. You can even infuse different areas with unique themes to craft a vibrant atmosphere.

    In the second chapter of scenarios, you’ll delve into Norse Mythology as you design an exciting water park. We’ll guide you through all the objectives, helping you earn more badges and create a flourishing amusement park.

    Bronze Objectives

    When you first enter the park, your task is to set up some attractions. Start by building two flat rides. There are two Viking-themed rides you can choose from, but feel free to select any flat rides you prefer!

    After placing and opening the flat rides, it’s time to focus on the flumes that represent the Bifrost. Begin with the three central flumes: green, blue, and yellow.

    When designing these flumes, you have complete creative control. They just need to reach the central pool and drop guests into the water. However, there are two key requirements:

    • The blue flume must maintain a nausea rating of less than five.
    • The yellow flume needs to achieve a fear rating of at least five.

    To keep the nausea rating low, design the blue flume with simplicity in mind. Avoid sharp turns and loops that could upset guests. On the other hand, for the yellow flume, amp up the excitement! You can incorporate special loops to increase the thrill factor.

    Once the flumes are completed, don’t forget to test them! As long as they’re safe to open, you’re all set.

    Silver Objectives

    With the first section of the Bifrost finalized, it’s time to expand the park. Access the park expansion menu and buy a plot of land. While you have options, it’s wise to start with the Alfheim plot.

    Next, you will complete the red and orange flumes. Here are the requirements:

    • The red flume must have a special flume piece.
    • The orange flume needs to be at least 200 meters long.

    Once these flumes are built, your next step is to construct a transport ride to help guests travel back to the park’s central area. You can opt for a cable car or a single-decker bus, but make sure it has at least two stations so guests can switch between locations.

    Ensure that there is sufficient power for each station!

    You can set up power generators, distributors, and solar panels to provide the necessary electricity.

    After launching the ride, you’ll need to hire lifeguards for the park. Ensure at least 90 percent of the pools are monitored, which includes the pools on the plot of land you haven’t purchased yet!

    You may need to buy the land before you can achieve this goal.

    By prioritizing guest safety, you’ll earn the silver badge!

    Gold Objectives

    For the gold objectives, you’ll finish constructing the last two Bifrost flumes. The indigo and violet flumes are still pending, and they, too, come with specific requirements:

    • The indigo flume must be at least 200 meters.
    • The violet flume must include a special flume piece.

    Once those flumes are operational, your next task is to open two new coasters. You can build them from scratch for a customized touch or opt for prebuilt versions to save time.

    Make sure to test the rides for safety before they open, and add extra power generators as needed to keep the system running smoothly.

    Your final gold objective is to relax and watch the profits come in. You’ll need to exceed daily earnings of $100,000, which may take some in-game time.

    You can speed things up by investing in advertisements to attract more guests, raising prices in your shops, and offering more commerce options.

    Guests are eager to buy souvenirs when they’re enjoying themselves!

    Once you’ve gathered enough funds to surpass the daily profit limit, you’ll earn the gold badge for this scenario and advance to the final stage of challenges.

    Platinum Objectives

    The last set of tasks is more challenging and does not involve adding more attractions. Instead, you’ll focus on monitoring how your guests and attractions interact.

    First, ensure that your pools maintain a cleanliness rating of at least 95 percent. This requires you to keep the water pumps and filters in top shape and have your cleaning staff tidy up after any spills. Remember, a clean park leads to happy guests!

    Next, your attention will shift to guest satisfaction regarding hunger and thirst. Both need to be above 65 percent, which means you’ll need plenty of refreshment options throughout the park.

    Providing your guests with a variety of food and drink choices, from burgers to milkshakes, will help meet all their dietary needs.

    With happy guests, your last goal will be to achieve a park rating of four and a half stars or higher. To boost your park rating, ensure you have a mix of rides, a solid reputation, stunning scenery, and prestigious attractions.

    By reaching all these ambitious objectives, you’ll secure the platinum badge. Congratulations on completing the scenario!
