TikTok Swaps Trash for Treasure: Introducing STEM Content!

TikTok is brimming with a variety of short videos, and if you take a moment to explore, you’re bound to find something that piques your interest. However, a newly accessible feed that caters to everyone is far more deserving of your time than the usual content that fills the app.

TikTok Launches STEM Feed for Adults

TikTok first introduced its STEM feed in March 2023, creating “a dedicated space to delve into a broad array of captivating, entertaining, and educational videos centered around science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” Initially, this feed was set to default for users under 18, leaving adults to sift through hashtags to find STEM-related content.

Now, every TikTok user, regardless of age, will have access to the STEM feed unless they opt to disable it. This change is currently applicable in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Additionally, the feed recently expanded to all users in Canada.

As many know, STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and these fields are becoming increasingly vital for both children and adults alike. Fortunately, there are numerous STEM-related websites and resources to explore.

While TikTok has always featured STEM-related videos, the introduction of this dedicated feed significantly enhances the accessibility of such content. Furthermore, videos within the STEM feed are pre-approved for their accuracy and relevance by Common Sense Networks and Poynter before being showcased.

A specific STEM feed is a beneficial addition to an app often associated with light-hearted skits or amusing animal antics, alongside influencers generating content that may not always be meaningful or beneficial to viewers. This initiative is a direct response to such criticisms.

Social media platforms, including TikTok, have faced scrutiny over their potential negative impact on mental health. Therefore, curating a feed with genuinely educational content serves as one effective way to address these concerns.

To find the STEM feed, simply swipe to the left past the Explore section. If you’d rather continue watching less informative videos, you can easily turn off the STEM feed by going to Profile > Menu > Settings and Privacy > Content Preferences > STEM Feed and toggling it off.
