Verizon is set to become the latest major wireless carrier to unveil a satellite messaging service, with an anticipated launch this fall. Beginning this autumn, selected smartphones will have the ability to utilize emergency messaging and share locations via satellite as part of a collaboration with Skylo, the same firm behind Google’s newly revealed Satellite SOS feature.
Next year, Verizon plans to roll out the capability for customers to send text messages using satellite technology.
According to Verizon, there will be no extra charges for this service. “Customers won’t incur additional fees for using this service,” stated Verizon spokesperson Karen Schulz. “Devices equipped for this feature can access it regardless of their pricing plans.” Schulz confirmed that support will be offered for the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Earlier this year, Verizon made a significant investment of $100 million in AST SpaceMobile, another company focused on satellite connectivity, and despite the recent news with Skylo, they still plan to collaborate with AST SpaceMobile. “We are thrilled not only to partner with AST but also to be a long-term investor in the growth of their satellite services,” Schulz added. “Until their satellite network is operational, we want to ensure that all customers with capable devices have access to essential satellite messaging capabilities.”
