Beginning with the iPhone 14, Apple has been focusing on eSIM-only versions for its United States users. This approach was similarly adopted for new Cellular iPads earlier this year; however, the eSIM-only iPhone 16 models featuring 5G mmWave technology are currently exclusive to the US market.
Apple Limits 5G mmWave and eSIM-Only iPhone to the US
As highlighted on Apple’s official website, there are specific iPhone 16 models tailored for the US audience. These devices are notable for their support of 5G mmWave technology and the absence of a SIM tray. The models include:
- iPhone 16: A3081
- iPhone 16 Plus: A3082
- iPhone 16 Pro: A3083
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: A3084
5G mmWave technology, first introduced with the iPhone 12, provides incredibly fast wireless speeds and minimal latency for cellular communications. However, its effectiveness is limited due to its short signal range, which struggles to penetrate glass or foliage, often leaving users without connectivity indoors.
This has resulted in a sluggish adoption rate for 5G mmWave outside select regions, and its popularity drops even further when considering global markets. Earlier this year, Apple even discontinued 5G mmWave support for the Cellular version of the M4 iPad Pro.
While all new iPhones retain compatibility with this technology, Apple has not shown any intention of rolling it out to additional countries. The company appears hesitant to further eliminate the SIM tray from iPhones in markets beyond the US.
As Apple emphasized back in 2022, using an eSIM provides numerous advantages, such as enhanced security since the SIM can’t be physically removed if the device is stolen. Nevertheless, the global uptake of eSIM technology has been relatively slow, with many carriers in various regions still not supporting it.
