The DXOMARK camera evaluations for the iPhone 16 have been released following the Pro Max model tests conducted in September. The standard iPhone 16 has achieved a noteworthy ranking of #20.
According to DXOMARK, while the camera’s hardware closely mirrors that of the iPhone 15, enhancements in software have contributed to improved scores in various aspects.
iPhone 16 DXOMARK Camera Evaluations
Previously, the iPhone 16 Pro Max was highlighted in September, securing a commendable #4 position overall and ranking #1 for video capabilities.
Subsequent to these tests, the standard iPhone 16 underwent a similar evaluation, receiving a score of 147—compared to the Pro Max’s impressive 157.
In the latest DXOMARK evaluations, the Apple iPhone 16 has demonstrated a solid performance within its category. Although it retains much of the camera hardware from its predecessor, with notable exceptions being enhancements in autofocus and a faster ultra-wide lens, software upgrades have led to notable improvements in performance across several testing criteria.
Our team found that the camera produces vibrant stills and videos, showcasing commendable exposure, impressive contrast, and naturally rendered skin tones. The video stabilization feature efficiently maintained smoothness and steadiness during motion recordings. However, the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens resulted in medium and long-range telephoto images lacking in detail and clarity.
Renowned for its rigorous testing standards, DXOMARK combines scientific analysis with practical shooting assessments. Their evaluations encompass 17 diverse categories to comprehensively gauge smartphone camera performance.
Additional points of critique highlighted six specific shortcomings:
The iPhone 16 excelled in exposure and color accuracy, achieving impressive scores of 124 for exposure and 129 for color accuracy.
Video capabilities stood out impressively within this device’s class. Much like the still images, the overall video quality bore similarities to its predecessor. Testers observed enhancements particularly in color representation, noting better white balance. The current model also provided improved video texture compared to last year’s offering, although there were moments where noise levels crept in more prominently than with the iPhone 16.
